Talking about Granny Smith apples with an account called Apple Rankings. Ranking apples is all well and good, but it will never surpass reviewing apples on an individual basis. Not all apples of a kind are the same! Except Honeycrisps are always the best.

Ohhhh my god, so I wrote a novel-length fic over the last five months and I just…need to write down some Thoughts on that, because it hadn’t happened before and I have no idea if it will again, just seemed worthwhile to collect myself a bit. To be clear: I’m…really proud of myself?? Who knew I had it in me! And I think it’s a fun read! I learned a lot! More under a cut if you care to read my ramblings.
The gdoc containing my initial outline of ideas was created on October 29, 2022. I shared it with the group chat from whence the idea came, because I was planning to participate in a daily prompt challenge in November so I wasn’t going to have time for it yet. By late November, quite a bit of work was happening in the doc—a proper outline with a three-act structure I borrowed from various writing tips websites and then wandered off on my own with. I’ve never written something this structured and long before, so I searched for some structure tips.
I found a few different forms (a 9-block, 27-chapter structure; a three-act checklist) that I ended up using almost like a self-survey/brainstorm. A couple passes through that, plus trying to work it out as a character/timeline spreadsheet, gave the whole thing a much clearer shape. I knew I wanted to alternate between Ed’s and Stede’s POVs, but not limit it to theirs. Early on I decided that Oluwande would be a third POV character because (a) I love writing him and (b) the crew’s perspective is REALLY IMPORTANT. Then, because I used Lucius as an outsider, he became the fourth POV, introduced at the beginning of act 2.
[ID: A bar chart showing word count by POV character. Ed has over 34,000 words, Stede about 26,000 words, Oluwande 13,000 words, and Lucius a little under 10,000 words. End ID.]
But it’s not like I had it 100% perfectly mapped out at a chapter level, nor did I know exactly what details would…emerge. Like, I knew the shape of the details, but I kind of worked them out as I got to know this version of the characters better. The outlining process was kind of my draft: I went through it to get to the point that I could sit down and outline each chapter (or two ahead, in some cases) and then write it.
Very few things were written out of order, but the scene where they’re trapped in the storage closet was written well before I finished chapter 1. And I thought it would happen later than it did. I really thought I was gonna enemies-to-lovers these guys! 😂
There were a TON of details/potential plotlines I thought about including, but ultimately decided not to, either because it was totally out of my lane to do it justice (ex.: literally anything to do with Ed’s heritage and food—I read up some and whew, it’d have to be its own story, and not really mine to tell) and/or because it would’ve overcomplicated/distracted from the plot as it unfolded. There was a whole thing where Stede was meant to pull a Christopher Kimball thing and screw over the magazine by starting a rival publication and, you know what, there was more than enough drama to mine from just the Bon Appetit Test Kitchen debacle(s).
The idea came from a group chat, and the same group chat was instrumental in helping me flesh out a bunch of character details. That was fun. That’s also where my main beta reader came from. It’s funny, I’ve written on and off pretty much my whole life, but rarely had an editor like this. It was very collaborative and challenging in the best possible ways, I think; especially with something this long, it really helped to have someone who knew some of what was in my head but wasn’t nose-deep in it.
While it hasn’t been a runaway hit or anything, it’s had by far more eyeballs than anything else I’ve written in this fandom. Definitely a lot more comments than anything else, which is fun. Some folks I really admire have said kind things and if that didn’t make me all 😊 well. (It did, though.) It was because of those commenters that I got a sense of how it was coming off—that it was, and could be, fun and frothy and still touch on subjects that were difficult (labor rights etc.) without making light of them. At least, that’s what I hope I pulled off in the end.
There were so many random little side routes and ideas that came up while thinking about and writing this that I really had to make a series. For the one-shots. For fuck’s sake, I put too much into building out this little world and this version of each character not to.
And if one of those ends up being some kind of E-rated fic involving Mary and Evelyn, like, posing for Doug with fresh fruit still-life and it turning into A Whole Thing, so be it. (It didn’t make the story text, but Mary and Evelyn are married and Doug is Mary’s guy who lives in the guest house out back. Also they make cooking YouTube videos together as a trio. There will probably be one-shots about them because Evelyn was too much fun to write.)

the books I read in 2023
Welp, time to finally face this post and submit it. I'm kind of embarrassed because I am so bad at reading anymore. No explanation, no excuses. I used to read twice this many books as a matter of course, and now I ... like, don't. My TBR barely budged ... I cleared some stuff out thanks to summer camp, but then I got new stuff to fill it back up.
I don't know. Maybe one day I'll start reading again. Not today, though, probably. This year's list has two books on it so far, both of which I'm maybe a quarter into. Ugh.
Wired Style, Constance Hale & Jessie Scanlon
Once Upon Atari, Howard Scott Warshaw
Dragonwatch: Master of the Phantom Isle, Brandon Mull
The Illustrated Al, ed. Josh Bernstein
Fucking Apostrophes, Simon Griffin
Jazz in the Bittersweet Blues of Life, Wynton Marsalis and Carl Vigeland
The Kitchen Detective, Christopher Kimball
Decoding Boys, Cara Natterson
The Maxx (1-35, complete), Sam Kieth (1)
Bury My Heart at Chuck E. Cheese’s, Tiffany Midge
Barely Functional Adult, Meichi Ng
What If? 2, Randall Munroe
8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, W. Bruce Cameron (2)
Over Sea, Under Stone, Susan Cooper
This Mournable Body, Tsitsi Dangarembga
The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt
The Rapture of the Nerds, Cory Doctorow and Charles Stross
The New Hacker’s Dictionary, ed. Eric S. Raymond (3)
All You Need is Kill, Hiroshi Sakurazaka
Wind/Pinball, Haruki Murakami
Disappearing Earth, Julia Phillips
Where Nobody Knows Your Name, John Feinstein
We Should Hang Out Sometime, Josh Sundquist
Watchmen, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
The Philosophy of Modern Song, Bob Dylan
Guardians of the Galaxy: The Complete Collection, Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, et al.
The Dark is Rising, Susan Cooper (4)
Banana Ball, Jesse Cole
A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album, Ashley Kahn
Free Lunch, Rex Ogle (5)
Greenwitch, Susan Cooper (6)
The Shepherd, the Angel, and Walter the Christmas Miracle Dog, Dave Barry
italics: read it before bold: read it to my kid in bed struck: unfinished
I’d read the first ten or so issues of this before, out of interest because I watched the animated series on MTV. This is the first time all the way through and I didn’t realize it was so dark and triggering.
I read this one when mine was a toddler, and remembered it being pretty patriarchal and victorian. Thought maybe it would hit different now that she’s actually teenaged, and ... like, it did! it’s even worse! Absolutely zero of this shit fits a kid who is not 100% straight and searching. I got through four essays and took it back to the library.
I got up through the Bs and then I LOST MY COPY.
The more I read of this, the more I realized I maybe only read the first couple chapters. Still keeping the italics (making up for claiming I never previously read The Maxx).
I subbed a middle school reading class where this was the text. Ended up reading the whole thing across the day.
This could be the last new book I ever read to my own children. We generally don't read to sleep during holiday breaks, instead allowing them to fall asleep in front of a TV. But when school restarted, my youngest (officially a teenager) didn't want me to read to him at bedtime anymore. The end of an era. I may have cried a little bit. I expect the Dave Barry on Christmas Eve tradition to continue at least another year (my oldest likes it and specifically requested it again), but maybe no more new ones.

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
December 26, 2023
AND THE PERSON OF THE YEAR IS... AN AIRPORT?
We've been waiting with baited breath for 364 days and finally it's here. The Salt Lake Tribune's Person of the Year is, wait for it, The Salt Lake City International Airport. We are not making this up. So, you may be asking, how does an airport become a person? Probably the same way corporations became persons and money became speech. It's complicated so try not to think about it too much. The other thing is that The Trib folks may have found themselves in a bind because there weren't a lot of real people standouts in 2023. Gov. Spencer Cox made national news for imploring everyone to disagree more nicely. That didn't cut it. Salt Lake City got tapped to host the 2034 Winter Olympics so The Trib could have made the Kimball Jct. Olympic Park ski jump the person of the year. But no. Here are some other potential would-be Utah Persons of the Year: Attorney General Sean Reyes for helping Tim Ballard find trafficked children with the aid of a psychic. Rep. Chris Stewart for quitting Congress (thank God). Ogden brothers Raland and Loy Brunson who sued to get Joe Biden thrown out of the White House. And finally, The King James Bible that made the news for containing pornography that could get it banned from Utah schools — in which case, more kids would read it.
5 WAYS TO BETTER ENJOY THE NEW YEAR
Well Wilson, we're half way through the 2023 Holiday Season, which is kinda like mile 13 in a marathon — you're thinking, I'll be glad when this is over. Gird your loins and cowboy up. We probably wouldn't have made it this far were it not for a wonderful feature in the Deseret News headlined, “5 ways early Utah pioneers enjoyed Christmas (Holidays) more than Americans today.” This, of course, was before Christmas became a celebration of capitalism and stuff. In the holiday spirit the D News spells out how they embraced the joyous season with 1. Dancing 2. Singing 3. Speaking & Performing 4. Splendid Dinners and 5. Sitting & Visiting. It got the staff here at Smart Bomb to thinking about ways to live out the remainder of the holidays in our times with an emphasis on “live,” as in to survive. 1. Don't drink a lot of eggnog, sweet stuff can give you a bad hangover. 2. To avoid hangovers after too much eggnog, drink a quart of water and take three aspirin before bed. 3. If the bedroom is spinning stick your fingers down your throat and throw up. 4. If you do have a hangover in the morning, avoid visiting your spouse's family. Use any excuse to get out of it — but don't say you're hungover. 5. Before visiting the in-laws it's advisable to have a strong drink or two. Repeat from No. 1.
ESCAPE WINTER — CHEAP JANUARY GETAWAYS
OK, Christmas is over and you're practically broke. It's dark and it's cold, the air tastes like Mag Corp and January has 62 days. What to do — blow out this puke hole! It's really a no-brainer except that you're short on Benjamins and your credit card is about to explode. When things get scary this time of year, Wilson and the Smart Bomb Band jump in the van and take a bead on Death Valley. It's in the mid-60s there and all you need is a tent, a warm bag, a Coleman stove and lots of Ramen, beer and weed (optional). Under sunny skies you can strip down to your skivvies, race desert tortoises and work on a winter tan. But you might have to fight the chuckwalla lizards and horned toads for space on the toasty rocks. If you've got a little more stamina and know someone with a Hobie Cat you can venture to Puerto Peñasco at the tip of the Sea of Cortez, 60 miles from the U.S. border. The town has a shrimp fleet and you can buy it by the kilo for a song along with a case of Mexican Beer. You'll be in heaven. If you're even more adventurous drive another 150 miles south to Guaymas where you can camp at Mish Mash Beach where the original “Catch 22” was filmed. Go easy on the tequila and don't be afraid of the hippies, they're only looking for a good time and they like to share.
Post script — Holy tamale, some dudes in California have succeeded in producing nuclear fusion, when two or more atoms smash together releasing huge amounts of energy. It's the reaction that powers the sun and fusion doesn't create waste that requires long-term storage like present-day fission nuclear reactors do. It's a breakthrough of immense import. But for some Utahns the word “fusion” is like a kick in the gut. That's because in 1989 electrochemists Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons announced what they called “cold fusion” that reportedly they created in a Hellmann's Mayonnaise jar. Before you could say, we'll all be rich and famous, then-University of Utah President Chase Peterson announced the mind-blowing details to the world. But alas, no other scientists could replicate their work and it was discovered that Fleischmann and Pons didn't actually detect nuclear reaction byproducts. Oops. The pair along with the University of Utah became late-night TV joke punchlines. Now, however, the scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have produced energy from nuclear fusion on three separate occasions. The future is here — again. Chase Peterson, Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons could not be found for comment. They could be racing desert tortoises in Death Valley.
Well Wilson, talk of Guaymas must bring back some found memories for you and the guys. OK, maybe there were some that weren't all that fun but you can't have adventure unless you go on an adventure. So how about you dust off the wanderlust and give us a theme song for January:
Nibblin' on sponge cake, watchin' the sun bake All of those tourists covered with oil Strummin' my six-string on my front-porch swing Smell those shrimp, they're beginnin' to boil Wasting away again in Margaritaville Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt Some people claim there's a woman to blame But I know it's nobody's fault Don't know the reason, stayed here all season With nothing to show but this brand-new tattoo But it's a real beauty, aMexican cutie How it got here I haven't a clue Wasting away again in Margaritaville Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt Some people claim there's a woman to blame Now I think, "Hell! It could be my fault." I blew out my flip-flop, stepped on a pop top Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home But there's booze in the blender And soon it will render That frozen concoction that helps me hang on Wasting away again in Margaritaville Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt Some people claim there's a woman to blame But I know, it's my own damn fault
("Margaritaville" — Jimmy Buffett)
