3.22 Boys Club

Later that evening we arrive at the restaurant. I feel a bit awkward at first; after all, I’m having dinner with my boss. We’ve been pretty friendly lately and I wouldn’t want anyone at work to get the wrong idea. With her husband there, though, it feels less intimate.

Her husband’s name is Christopher and he seems pretty laid-back. I can see that he and Lucy are well balanced, and they have an ease with each other that leaves me longing to find the same.

Lucy’s phone buzzes and she checks her notifications. “Matt says the boys are having a blast with their cousin and not to worry about rushing back.”

“Wasn’t planning on it,” Christopher laughs. “I’ve barely even sipped on this glass of wine."

“You have kids?” I ask. “I guess I don’t know much about your personal life.”

“Yeah, 2 boys. One of my brothers is babysitting for us,” Lucy explains.

“One of your brothers? How many do you have?”

“4. I’m the only girl.”

“Get out! I have 4 sisters and I’m the only boy!” For some reason this mundane similarity excites me.

“Finally, someone who can relate to my pain! Nah, I’m kidding. My brothers are great. We all get along for the most part.”

“I’m pretty close to my sisters, I guess.” Last year I wouldn’t have tacked on that last bit, but my siblings were still a little salty about my summer of sin. “Sometimes we get on each other’s nerves, but it’s all love. How old are your kids?”

“We have 2-year-old twins. They’re pretty much inseparable.”

“Especially when they’re fighting! They’re really hard to separate then!” Christopher joked.

“I bet! You know, I have a twin. Her name is Chantal.”

“Oh, I didn’t know that! That’s so cool!” Lucy takes a sip of wine. “It was definitely unexpected, but we feel blessed. I guess I’m destined to be surrounded by boys.”

“She wouldn’t have it any other way,” Christopher tells me.

“Yeah, I’ve always been able to hold my own around the boys club. I guess I’m more comfortable with what I grew up around. Is it the same for you? I noticed most of the people you talk to at work are women.”

“Are they?” I hadn’t really thought about it, but I suppose she was right. “Hmm, I guess I am close to a lot of women, and I don’t really have any guy friends that I hang out with regularly.”

“Well, there’s nothing wrong with that. We’re not big fans of gender norms ourselves,” Christopher says. “That’s something that factors into our parenting for sure.”

“Yeah, I have 2 dads and one of them is a drag queen, so gender norms weren’t really a thing in our house either,” I explain. “I lived with my mom until I was 14, though, and that was a different story.”

As soon as I mention my mom’s house a familiar chill starts spreading up my spine. My breaths get shallow and unsteady and my heart begins to race. I know what's coming and I try my best to stave it off. I grab my water and shift my focus to the coldness of the water in my mouth and how the glass feels in my hand. Luckily, this is enough to ground me.

After a few seconds of silence, Lucy leans in and says quietly, “Well, it’s good that you had some positive influences.” I can tell from the concern on her face that she knows the topic upset me, but she doesn't pry. Still, I feel exposed. “If you want, I can invite my brother so there will be at least one other guy there.”

“Cool,” I reply, still unsettled. Lucy reaches over and silently squeezes my hand. I can imagine her doing the same to one of her sons when they're upset and it comforts me. “Thank you,” I tell her softly.

“For what?”

“I don’t know. For inviting me to dinner, and…everything, I guess.”

A woman approaches the table, smiling warmly. She’s around the same age as my parents with golden blonde hair that almost matches Lucy’s exactly, save for some silvery strands woven in. “How was everything?” she asks, placing her hands on Lucy's shoulders.

“Mama!” Lucy exclaims as the woman leans down and embraces her. “I was wondering where you’ve been, I haven’t seen you all night. Johnny, this is my mom Lucinda. Johnny is my assistant.”

“Nice to meet you, Johnny!” Lucinda tells me. “I hope you enjoyed your meal.”

“Oh, it was terrible,” I joke, grateful for an opportunity to change the tone. “Just awful! I definitely didn’t eat way too much of it and give myself indigestion.”

Lucinda laughs heartily. “Oh, you’re a little smart ass! I like you.”

I can tell she has good taste. “I’m glad someone appreciates it!”

“I do, and I want to let you know that your meal is on the house. Since it was so terrible and all,” Lucinda says, winking.

“Well, thanks! A good cook and generous, too. If you’re looking for another son, my parents would probably be glad to have someone take me off their hands.”

“I think I’m good on sons for now, but I’ll keep feeding you if you keep coming back.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Transcript:

Morgana: “When Christopher told me to contact him again once things are into place, I… felt… heartbroken. I know you don’t like him and all… but I… knew I would never be truly happy like he hoped I would be.”

Pauline: “But why… Thornton? Why run back to a life you hated?”

Morgana: “Because… I freaked out. Yesterday, he was there. In the crowd. His eyes met mine and… I wasn’t expecting to feel the same way as I did."

The whole day had been mixed up because of Yumi's letter. Lots of emotions that brought about an up and down of feelings. But the next day was to be used for another conversation. After breakfast, Morgana made her way to Jamie.

She was surprised that Christopher opened the door for her. “What's wrong with you? Aren't you supposed to be in bed?"/ ‘Me? Oh, I'm much better now…’/ ‘She told me you had the flu… I brought extra medicine’/ ‘No, no, everything's fine. I sweated it out all day yesterday, I'm fine again today’/ ”If you say so. May I…"/ ‘yes, come in’.

Morgana was greeted warmly by her colleague. “Hey, did you forget about me yesterday?"/ ”No, I certainly didn't forget, but… There was something that we had to… mentally process first.” Jamie stroked her back lovingly. “Do you want to talk about it?"/ ‘I want to talk about so many things, but… Chris…’/ ‘I've told him, but he doesn't believe me much yet either’.

“And who else knows besides him?” Morgana asked with a skeptical look in her direction. “Don't worry, no one else. He promised me he wouldn't tell anyone"/ ‘No one would believe me anyway, why would I tell anyone?’ said Christopher as he flipped through the pages. “h-hh, I wish everyone had seen it, then the whole thing wouldn't be so difficult”. Morgana's gaze wandered a little for a moment.

“well, he feels the same way I did when I first heard it from you. But the fact is, she's no longer there and that has to be explained somehow.” Morgana agreed with a nod. “I'm really sick to my stomach about it. What am I supposed to tell people?"/ ‘Well, the only simple and plausible explanation I can think of is… to tell them that she fell asleep peacefully at home and you took her to the cemetery later’.

“I'd already thought about that, but the ground is rock-hard from the cold. How were me and Thornton supposed to dig a hole on our own? It all happened so quickly. I even had the macabre idea … that she might have run away in the night and we wouldn't have noticed… And now she might be lying around somewhere in the countryside and we couldn't find her”.

“That would be… an option, of course. But at some point the snow will melt, and then they'd have to find her dead body out there somewhere…”. Morgana shook her head frantically. “Forget it. She hasn't been around for a few days now, so there's no point in feigning panic because she's 'disappeared'…”. Jamie was almost a little overwhelmed by the whole situation himself. “hh… I'd probably stick with the first option. Or you could really try the truth.”.

“The truth…” Morgana thought silently for a moment. “What do you think Sam would do?” Jamie asked her. “Sam? Well, he… would certainly want to convince people that what happened was true. I'm the only witness who was there"/ ”You'll just have to work together as a team. Only you two know the circumstances under which she left"/ ‘as a team… We'll have to for the next 11 years anyway’.

Jamie looked at her in surprise. “You say that so strangely… Did something happen?"/ ”Mhm. We got a letter from Yumi yesterday. My God, I still can't believe it"/ ‘What? Now tell me’/ ”Hh…in the letter was Yumi's will and a power of attorney for Sam's custody. She signed it over to us until he comes of age"/ ”what, really? But that's… Great, isn't it?”.

“Of course it is and I'm still incredibly overwhelmed about it. I always thought a simple promise would be enough…”. Jamie noticed that Morgana seemed a little overwhelmed despite everything. “Well, but what if he needs to be registered somewhere? Or to the doctor? After all, he needs a guardian"/ ”That's right. My God, I hadn't even thought about that…"/ ”hn. Does he know yet?"/ ‘No’.

“I see, you want to wait a little longer until you say it him…"/ ”Only until I'm sure he's got over Yumi's death to some extent. But you should see him, he didn't cry once after the visit to the cemetery. He never wanted it to again, he said that to me there"/ ”o.k…. So he decided that for himself. Maybe a kind of self-protection or wall that he built around himself.”.

“yes, I think… He doesn't want to appear weak in front of others."/ ”He should actually know that he doesn't have to do that. It could also potentially get him in trouble later in his social life.” Morgana looked at her briefly. “I know, but right now I just want him to be himself.”

“That's understandable, yes. All right… Well, and as for the Yumi thing. Maybe you'll make an announcement about her death anyway, so that everyone here knows about it and it doesn't all go round bit by bit. Then the first shock would be digested. The rest will come later.“. Morgana rubbed her hands together with a sigh and then nodded. “O.K..“..

An obituary… Morgana had to think about how to do this. after all, she didn't have a working printer to print out several sheets. But she also thought it would be a little disrespectful to Yumi if she were to post a few notes on the surrounding buildings.

On the way home, Morgana came up with another idea. The Internet. In the meantime, everything was working again at any time of day or night. “I remember the Sunset Valley portal, a kind of online local newspaper where anyone in town could write something. But do people still look in there?… I'll just try this way”.

Morgana first had to find her way around the website again. She hadn't been there for a very long time. Then she found the section set up especially for obituaries. She designed the ad with various things, a picture of Yumi, a carefully and lovingly written text and a few embellishments to make the ad stand out. And then it was just a matter of waiting.

Epilogue: Where Are They Now?

After leaving the twins' birthday party, Matt and Kaylynn rushed to the hospital. While her labor lasted longer than she would have liked, Kaylynn gave birth to a healthy baby girl without any complications.

Needless to say, Matt and Kaylynn were thrilled to finally meet their daughter. Welcome to the family, Lila Mae DiMarco!

The End...for now! I had a lot of fun telling this story and I hope you enjoyed it! If you did, the DiMarcos will be appearing in the next chapter of main story Safe Harbor. Here's what they've been up to:

The twins are walking now and keep Lucy and Christopher on their toes. The couple is still able to spend a lot of time at home with the boys and with each other. Lucy began her new position at Sunny Side Productions and has been working alongside Damien to create more content. They're beginning the process of adding more members to the team soon.

After spending a couple of months at home with baby Lila, Kaylynn began her journey as an event planner. She started off with a few small birthday parties that went successfully. Through networking, she has been able to gain more clientele while still spending lots of time at home with Lila. Matt has continued his schooling and still works as a Vet Tech. He’s intent on being the Best Dad Ever and can’t wait to have more kids. Well, he’ll probably wait until he’s at least finished with undergrad. 

Paul is still at Foxbury but moved out of the dorms and into an apartment that he shares with his BFF Danica. Their friends Wesley and Nasir live nearby. Now that he's out to his family, they're closer than ever. He and Lucy are especially close and spend a lot of time together when Paul has breaks from school. He's still single and loving it. He's keeping things casual right now, but being open about himself has made him more hopeful that there's a special someone out there for him when he's ready.

It's the next morning. Vita got up early because she couldn't sleep anymore. It's probably not only her husband who is very excited about today, but also she herself. And it has become cold, very cold. Do people even want to come to an important event in weather like this? And what will they think? They still have no idea what to expect.

Despite his inner turmoil, Nick slept almost better than his wife. “Hi… Fortunately, you're not aware of too much of what's going on out there yet. I want to give you a good life. But first I have to go through my own personal hell”.

He went to the cradle and carefully took his son in his arms. Then he looked at him and smiled. “Do you think we still need this thing behind me here? I'd like to throw it out of the window in a high arc… Someone out there must have been a little cleverer than me. But I won't be taken advantage of again, I promise”.

Later. After breakfast, Nick retired to his desk for a moment. He had to mentally prepare himself for what he would like to say. But in the end, the words would come out of him very differently than he had planned. But he knew that he had someone to back him up. “we should start slowly"/ …

Nick stood up and turned to his wife. “Do you remember… For better or for worse times?”/ “Mhm. Just be the man I fell in love with"/ ‘Hm, I'm not going to get fat again that quickly’/ ”hnhn, that's not what I mean either. Confident, determined and passionate about everything you do”. he smiled a little sheepishly. ‘hn, should be manageable’.

He took his wife by the hands. Then he looked into her eyes. “You're coming with me, aren't you?”. She grinned a little “No, I was about to get back into my pyjamas and read a book. Of course I'll come with you, Holly's looking forward to spending some time with her brother”. Nick's face relaxed a little. Then he squeezed his wife's hands a little tighter. “All right, let's go then.”

It's not quite midday when Nick and his wife arrive at the small new town hall. And there seemed to be quite a few people there already, interested in what the man who hadn't been seen for months had to say. But for the time being, they retreated inside the building “Did you see the looks? like I killed someone”/ “just concentrate on yourself and your words”. Together they waited for the people to gather in front of the town hall.

A little later. By now, many of the residents had arrived at the town hall to hear what Nick had to say. The crowd was a little upset and many questions were asked. “Please, not all at once. I know we are in a difficult situation at the moment”. After a few seconds, things quietened down a little and Nick was able to continue.

“It is a truly great tragedy that our city has fallen victim to this terrible disaster and that many people have lost their lives as a result. I know that they were all hoping for quick help, but… unfortunately we were denied that help and it's… largely my fault"/ ‘I knew something was up’ grumbled Detlef. “ssht… stay calm”.

Nick explained how these people from outside had contacted him after the disaster. Among other things, they had made sure that no information could get out, so nobody could know that there were still survivors here. They were people with a lot of influence. And he told them about the experiment.

Beau was also very upset and had to be held back a little by his wife “I knew all along that something wasn't right here. And you let yourself be manipulated like that for your money and put all our lives at risk?“/”Beau…"/ ‘You're really scum, Alto…!’. Nick apologized for the many inconveniences and mistakes he had made over the last few months.

Nick then told them about the secret deliveries he had regularly received, which he had used exclusively to supply his family. This again caused a great deal of unrest in the crowd. “That's what I thought,” Cy said quietly. “Yes, you were right, everything came by sea and we didn't notice.”

“Look, we know we were wrong not to tell you about this, but we were under enormous pressure. I decided last night to hand over all my assets”. The residents now also knew what that meant. “Wait…and who's going to help us now? Where's your food storage, eh? This is pure selfishness!"/Nick's wife joined in briefly. “We've decided to divide everything up fairly, you'll just have to be patient.”

“And how long is that supposed to last?” someone shouted again from the crowd. “Yes, exactly, how did you imagine it would last? At some point it's all used up, and then what?"/ ‘We're aware of that and that's why I'd really appreciate getting in touch with one or two of you to work on a plan’/ ‘Who wants to make plans with you here?’ someone else said sarcastically.

Time passed and Nick tried everything to calm people down. But most of them didn't give him any more attention or trust. After all, he ignored them the whole time and didn't help them. Many left the square angry and disappointed, …but not all of them.

Seeing people leave the pitch was almost like a slap in the face for Nick. But as I said, not everyone wanted to leave straight away. Jack went up to him and looked him in the face. There was despair in it, he wasn't the only one who could see that. “You haven't noticed much of what's going on out here, have you?” Nick looked at him, almost a little shocked, and shook his head. “I'm… I'm really sorry, no”. Jack glanced briefly at Cyclone, who nodded at him. “We need to talk.”
