3.22 Boys Club

Later that evening we arrive at the restaurant. I feel a bit awkward at first; after all, I’m having dinner with my boss. We’ve been pretty friendly lately and I wouldn’t want anyone at work to get the wrong idea. With her husband there, though, it feels less intimate.

Her husband’s name is Christopher and he seems pretty laid-back. I can see that he and Lucy are well balanced, and they have an ease with each other that leaves me longing to find the same.

Lucy’s phone buzzes and she checks her notifications. “Matt says the boys are having a blast with their cousin and not to worry about rushing back.”

“Wasn’t planning on it,” Christopher laughs. “I’ve barely even sipped on this glass of wine."

“You have kids?” I ask. “I guess I don’t know much about your personal life.”

“Yeah, 2 boys. One of my brothers is babysitting for us,” Lucy explains.

“One of your brothers? How many do you have?”

“4. I’m the only girl.”

“Get out! I have 4 sisters and I’m the only boy!” For some reason this mundane similarity excites me.

“Finally, someone who can relate to my pain! Nah, I’m kidding. My brothers are great. We all get along for the most part.”

“I’m pretty close to my sisters, I guess.” Last year I wouldn’t have tacked on that last bit, but my siblings were still a little salty about my summer of sin. “Sometimes we get on each other’s nerves, but it’s all love. How old are your kids?”

“We have 2-year-old twins. They’re pretty much inseparable.”

“Especially when they’re fighting! They’re really hard to separate then!” Christopher joked.

“I bet! You know, I have a twin. Her name is Chantal.”

“Oh, I didn’t know that! That’s so cool!” Lucy takes a sip of wine. “It was definitely unexpected, but we feel blessed. I guess I’m destined to be surrounded by boys.”

“She wouldn’t have it any other way,” Christopher tells me.

“Yeah, I’ve always been able to hold my own around the boys club. I guess I’m more comfortable with what I grew up around. Is it the same for you? I noticed most of the people you talk to at work are women.”

“Are they?” I hadn’t really thought about it, but I suppose she was right. “Hmm, I guess I am close to a lot of women, and I don’t really have any guy friends that I hang out with regularly.”

“Well, there’s nothing wrong with that. We’re not big fans of gender norms ourselves,” Christopher says. “That’s something that factors into our parenting for sure.”

“Yeah, I have 2 dads and one of them is a drag queen, so gender norms weren’t really a thing in our house either,” I explain. “I lived with my mom until I was 14, though, and that was a different story.”

As soon as I mention my mom’s house a familiar chill starts spreading up my spine. My breaths get shallow and unsteady and my heart begins to race. I know what's coming and I try my best to stave it off. I grab my water and shift my focus to the coldness of the water in my mouth and how the glass feels in my hand. Luckily, this is enough to ground me.

After a few seconds of silence, Lucy leans in and says quietly, “Well, it’s good that you had some positive influences.” I can tell from the concern on her face that she knows the topic upset me, but she doesn't pry. Still, I feel exposed. “If you want, I can invite my brother so there will be at least one other guy there.”

“Cool,” I reply, still unsettled. Lucy reaches over and silently squeezes my hand. I can imagine her doing the same to one of her sons when they're upset and it comforts me. “Thank you,” I tell her softly.

“For what?”

“I don’t know. For inviting me to dinner, and…everything, I guess.”

A woman approaches the table, smiling warmly. She’s around the same age as my parents with golden blonde hair that almost matches Lucy’s exactly, save for some silvery strands woven in. “How was everything?” she asks, placing her hands on Lucy's shoulders.

“Mama!” Lucy exclaims as the woman leans down and embraces her. “I was wondering where you’ve been, I haven’t seen you all night. Johnny, this is my mom Lucinda. Johnny is my assistant.”

“Nice to meet you, Johnny!” Lucinda tells me. “I hope you enjoyed your meal.”

“Oh, it was terrible,” I joke, grateful for an opportunity to change the tone. “Just awful! I definitely didn’t eat way too much of it and give myself indigestion.”

Lucinda laughs heartily. “Oh, you’re a little smart ass! I like you.”

I can tell she has good taste. “I’m glad someone appreciates it!”

“I do, and I want to let you know that your meal is on the house. Since it was so terrible and all,” Lucinda says, winking.

“Well, thanks! A good cook and generous, too. If you’re looking for another son, my parents would probably be glad to have someone take me off their hands.”

“I think I’m good on sons for now, but I’ll keep feeding you if you keep coming back.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Morgana: “When Christopher told me to contact him again once things are into place, I… felt… heartbroken. I know you don’t like him and all… but I… knew I would never be truly happy like he hoped I would be.”

Pauline: “But why… Thornton? Why run back to a life you hated?”

Morgana: “Because… I freaked out. Yesterday, he was there. In the crowd. His eyes met mine and… I wasn’t expecting to feel the same way as I did."

So far I haven't given him a makeover very often, as he usually comes across as rather inconspicuous and quiet and is easily overlooked in Sunset Valley. But if you make an effort, he's quite a handsome guy. I certainly wouldn't say no to him^^

Epilogue: Where Are They Now?

After leaving the twins' birthday party, Matt and Kaylynn rushed to the hospital. While her labor lasted longer than she would have liked, Kaylynn gave birth to a healthy baby girl without any complications.

Needless to say, Matt and Kaylynn were thrilled to finally meet their daughter. Welcome to the family, Lila Mae DiMarco!

The End...for now! I had a lot of fun telling this story and I hope you enjoyed it! If you did, the DiMarcos will be appearing in the next chapter of main story Safe Harbor. Here's what they've been up to:

The twins are walking now and keep Lucy and Christopher on their toes. The couple is still able to spend a lot of time at home with the boys and with each other. Lucy began her new position at Sunny Side Productions and has been working alongside Damien to create more content. They're beginning the process of adding more members to the team soon.

After spending a couple of months at home with baby Lila, Kaylynn began her journey as an event planner. She started off with a few small birthday parties that went successfully. Through networking, she has been able to gain more clientele while still spending lots of time at home with Lila. Matt has continued his schooling and still works as a Vet Tech. He’s intent on being the Best Dad Ever and can’t wait to have more kids. Well, he’ll probably wait until he’s at least finished with undergrad. 

Paul is still at Foxbury but moved out of the dorms and into an apartment that he shares with his BFF Danica. Their friends Wesley and Nasir live nearby. Now that he's out to his family, they're closer than ever. He and Lucy are especially close and spend a lot of time together when Paul has breaks from school. He's still single and loving it. He's keeping things casual right now, but being open about himself has made him more hopeful that there's a special someone out there for him when he's ready.

Episode 16: Daddy Daughter Day Out (looonger Part 2)

A little later. Christopher had already caught a few fish when his daughter came running up to him. “Hey, what's going on, sweetie?”. Actually, the question was superfluous, because Christopher knew his daughter. At some point, she couldn't and didn't want to deal with herself any more and demanded his attention

If there was one thing Selina loved doing most with her father, it was playing. No matter what, the main thing was to be together. And he ichhad everything under control. “And the birdie fliiiees”. A hearty, joyful laugh came out of the little girl's mouth and even drowned out the splashing of the water.

Christopher knew that his daughter was having an incredible amount of fun with this game, but at some point it had to come to an end. “Now you've flown enough, Selina, hnhn… ooh, you smell so good, like a cupcake, mmh“/”thihi, Daddyy”.

“ha, what was that? No more Da-da?“/ ‘hnn, Daddy…wan' ea'n fruu…”. So far, Christopher wasn't particularly good at deciphering his daughter's linguistic progress. But after she pointed to her mouth and repeated what she had said… “Oh, fruit, you want to eat fruit?”. The girl nodded frantically with a broad grin. “O.k., let's go then”.

Of course, Christopher first had to think about where he was going to get some fruit. There were some things he simply couldn't refuse his child. After a short deliberation, he took her to the supermarket, where he put together a small selection for her. A nice employee at the supermarket even made sure that the fruit was chopped up a little for the girl. After a while, a car pulled up in the parking lot in front of the supermarket, from which Detlef and VJ surprisingly emerged. “hehe, hello, you two. Did Jamie throw you out nunand you're homeless now?”. Christopher laughed and shook his head. “No, we were fishing and didn't have anything to eat with us…” / ”Hn, okay. Well, she's got quite an appetite. Hey, when are you going to teach her to drink beer? Then we can invite her for a round“/”haha, forget it. Are you buying some?“/”Yes, why, do you want some?“/”Just a bottle for home“/”o.k., coming soon…”

It didn't take five minutes for the two of them to come out of the supermarket again. Detlef put the 6-pack of beer on the floor and took out a bottle for Christopher. “Here, that'll be $2.78"/ ‘What? Are you serious?’/ ”It's all getting more expensive. All right, because you're my friend, free today”. Amused, Christopher accepted the bottle with thanks.

“you wouldn't have gotten any money from me either, then I would have preferred to do without the bottle, haha", Christopher joked. ”hnhn. Is everything else OK with you?"/ ”Sure, we're doing really well. Jamie is happy with her work and earns a good living here. I'm out with Selina a lot in return“/”hehe, yeah, she's a real daddy's girl apparently,” Detlef said with a smile as he looked down at the little girl.

“And what about you?"/ ”Well, what can I say, Kati is in the prime of puberty and is trying to test her limits. “/ “hehe, and is she successful?”. When he was asked the question, Detlef had to grin a little. “Not as long as Liane is around to stop her"/ ‘hehe, you're probably waiting for her to do something’/ ‘as long as it's not illegal and doesn't harm anyone…’ he replied again, shrugging his shoulders. . *chuckling men*

Christopher then looked questioningly at VJ. But he just smiled sheepishly and shook his head. “I can't say much about children, we're still in the transition phase"/ ”hnhn, really? You know, producing children isn't difficult"/ ‘That's not the point. But we want to work for a while so that we have enough things for the child’/ ‘Hey, if you need anything, just let us know, we still have a lot of baby stuff.’.

“Thanks, but we really want to try and do everything on our own. I can finally put a bit of money aside every now and then"/ ”Oh yes, you work in the garage. How's it going?"/ ”Well, according to my boss, I might even be able to finish my apprenticeship early … And we're getting a pretty cool job in tomorrow, which I'll be able to work on"/ ‘mhm, sounds good’.

Selina made her presence felt because she no longer wanted to play on the hard asphalt and at some point even a toddler runs out of patience. “Well then, let's slowly make our way home again. Will you say goodbye to the two uncles?"/ ‘goo'bye’.… “well, there's still a bit missing, hnhn"/ ”hnhn, it's taking her a bit longer, but she already said daddy today. But we won't tell Mommy yet"/ ”haa, all right. Then have a nice rest of the day and enjoy your beer later"/ ‘thanks, you too’. It's always a welcome change when you bump into familiar faces. A few people from Sunset Valley are still finding it a little difficult to make friends with their new neighbors in Bridgewood.

Later. After they had gone for a long walk, Christopher put his daughter straight to bed at home. Even if she didn't particularly like it. “You'll thank me for that later. You can't imagine how great it is to sleep. Besides, you walked a lot today and ate a huge portion of fruit. So I'm sure you'll be in dreamland in no time. Good night, darling.

15 minutes later, Christopher went into the kitchen, got a glass from the cupboard and poured himself the beer that Detlef had given him. And not another five minutes later, Jamie was home too. “Oh… must have been a good day, hn”. He looked at her over the rim of his glass and grinned. “Mhm.”. Jamie sat down at the table with him. Then she had to smile a little because he still had a bit of foam on his upper lip. He noticed and wiped it away with a smile. “So, how was your shift today?"/ ”Oh, really interesting. I really like the new medical center. There were a few things to complain about, but otherwise it's a good place to work.

“Sounds good. “/ “Yes, and the devices there are all easy to use. Oh, how was your trip?"/ ”Hn, very good. Our girl was her usual good self, played the whole time and later ate a bowl of fruit"/ ‘really?’. Jamie was surprised to hear that.

She was silent for a while and looked at the tabletop with a somewhat saddened expression. “Are you okay, sweetheart?” he asked her, a little worried. “Every time I try to get her excited about something like this, she shuts down."/ ”hnhn, hey, don't be sad about it, okay? I didn't have to ask her, she came up with it herself"/ ”Oh man, she's already making her own decisions. I'm missing out on so much from her, I feel like”.

“You're not, Jamie, don't worry. She's just exploring the world faster than you can keep track of it.” She smiled and nodded in agreement. “Yes, she really is special.” Christopher could hardly bear her melancholy look. And actually, he wanted to keep this one thing to himself, but he couldn't now. “She said Daddy"/ ‘What? Really?’/ ‘Loud and clear, yes, hn’. “You see, these are the kind of moments you want to experience"/ ‘Jamie…’/ ”It's okay, I chose it myself. If there wasn't a constant shortage of staff at the hospital, I'd have more time for our child.” Christopher finished his glass and threw the empty beer bottle in the garbage can.

Jamie stood up too, put the chair back under the table and waited until Christopher had finished. Then he saw her tired, sad eyes again. “hey, come here”. She let herself sink into his warm embrace and sank a little into melancholy. “I love my job, Chris, but sometimes it's just frustrating. I work with the patients and during the breaks I wonder what you two are doing”.

“I've told you before, as long as it's quiet, everything's fine” / ‘But sometimes it's just too quiet for me, Christopher. Why don't you at least send me a picture or two, or a video, that I can look at’. This was something Christopher had rarely done before, as he did less with his smartphone than other people. Now he had an additional, not too difficult task. “OK, I promise”.

After the hug, he looked at her with a smile and stroked her face. “When are you off again?"/ ‘Well, as long as some colleague doesn't get the idea to call in sick… then at the weekend’/ ”No one will call in sick. Let's do something with the little one. Maybe go to the beach?"/ ‘hh, that sounds so good, yes’. He gave her a heartfelt kiss, which she was only too happy to accept. Christopher was a gentle, understanding man who had a lot of patience with her and his child. “O.k.. Now let's go to bed”..

As soon as you have gone to bed and turned out the lights, you fall asleep very quickly, at least most of the time. However, Jamie often can't fall asleep straight away because she thinks a lot. About work, her family, her friends. But she also wanted to finally think about herself again. So she was looking forward to the weekend and hoped that she have enough time with her family.
