SCOURGE OF THE GALACTIC EMPIRE -- HERO OF THE REBEL ALLIANCE.
PIC(S) INFO: Mega-spotlight on promotional stills of American actor Harrison Ford as scoundrel, smuggler, pilot of the Millennium Falcon, and celebrated hero of the Rebel Alliance, Han Solo, from "STAR WARS: Episode IV -- A New Hope" (1977).
Resolution from largest to smallest: 1285x2493, 1259x2048, 1268x1900, 1190x1513, 820x1291, 401x1117, 768x1333, & 640x968.
"I thought that the luck of the character was that he represented something close to the audience's sensibilities because of his distance and resistance to the mythology." -- HARRISON FORD on his portrayal of Han Solo
"When casting the role of Solo, Lucas sought actors who had individual screen presence as well as chemistry with Skywalker. He wanted Solo to be older than Skywalker and to possess a cynical edge. Lucas desired new and unknown actors to play STAR WAR's major roles, and originally forbade Harrison Ford from auditioning, having worked with him on the 1973 film "American Graffiti." Ford was working as a carpenter on the set of the auditions, and was brought in by Lucas to feed lines to the actors who were auditioning, including Kurt Russell, including Kurt Russell, Nick Nolte, Christopher Walken, and Perry King. While feeding lines, Ford impressed Lucas by giving the character a mix of mercenary swagger and world weariness, and convinced the director to let him play the part."

Oil Spill in Lima Analysis
Charbel Rajaee
Visual Literacy and Culture
Teacher: Christoph Heldt
Due date: October 5
Exhibition Analysis
The photo called “Oil Spill in Lima”, was taken by Musuk Nolte. He was born in 1988 and he is half Mexican and half Peruvian. He is a photographer, a descendentalist and an editor. His works are related to artistic and documentary photography about social issues, such as memory and environmental depredation. The photo was taken on January 21, 2022, in Lima Peru. This image shows one of the biggest oil spills ever. Nearly 12,000 barrels of oil spilled in the sea. The Italian tanker company that spilled the oil and the Peruvian government both said the cause of the incident is the inadequacy of equipment, mismanagement and trading accusations of negligence. It extended to 7.13 square kilometers, and it caused killing wildlife, polluting beaches and impacting livelihoods. It was so bad that it reached three marine protected areas and it affected the mammals and the birds leading them potentially to suffocation. People in tourism, commercial fisheries and local communities were also affected by this disastrous event. Experts think that the effects of this spill will last for 10 years. The image is mainly showing us men in gas masks and outfits trying to fix the issues and save the environment. We can see how bad the damage is and it's hard to breathe in that kind of air when oil is everywhere. My personal view did change after reading the description because it didn’t really look like an oil spill. It felt more like an air incident than an oil issue because everyone was wearing masks.
The photo is showing us one of the biggest disasters to ever happen in Peru. The message it’s sending is how some men are wearing gas masks to prevent breathing in that poor air quality. It’s letting us know how dangerous it is to be outside in Peru right now for the fact it’s endangering everyone at that exact moment. This photo could mean objectively that people’s lives are on the line and that it can start a country’s downfall. It is a disaster that can lead to death to people and wildlife. Subjectively we can say that it was an accident what the tanker did. Accidents do happen but it has a limit. That accident that we can subjectively say led to taking the lives of many and putting the country in a threatening position. Another feeling people can have is to blame it all on the tanker without understanding the company’s point of view. The photo has a national importance because it represents a country with a high risk of downfall. The photo is taken in a special way to convey the message. Firstly, the oil spill that happened shows how it affects the society with the men wearing the hazmat suits. The photo shows the oil is coming in waves and not in a straight line so it could create some kind of fear for the viewer because it’s a dangerous event. Secondly, the black and white color makes the scene more apocalyptic with the addition of the rocks. The shapes of the rocks are different, and it creates a kind of pattern for it to not be boring. What makes the image so special is that it was taken so well and the men in the picture are well visible. Everything is so clear despite being black and white. The background is foggy but helps show the insanity and the danger in the country. It catches our attention quickly because there are strong details in the image which we call emphasis.
This photo is communicating effectively with the viewers because it is showing what is happening in Peru and how major it is. The image is like presenting the news but in just one picture. It has all the right details needed to catch a viewer’s attention in many ways. The details provided in that image are clear and don’t leave the viewer in confusion. This message is mainly targeting Peru citizens but could also be for the countries near Peru. They could get affected by this disaster because a lot of oil spilled and it went to the marines. It could also be a message to the whole world because some people follow the news a lot and they could get information about it. After doing this analysis, my reaction hasn’t changed a lot. The reason being that it was easy to understand the image with the description. The photo is so clear that it didn’t leave me confused while writing this analysis. In fact, images related to real life problems are photos that I enjoy learning about. What made my reaction change is that I found out that it was an accident that caused this disaster. I thought it was planned but it wasn’t, so it made me a little shocked. To conclude, the photo “Oil Spill in Lima” is describing the disaster that happened in Peru that will affect the country for at least ten years just because of a small accident.

Read the full article

charlidos:
An interview from Australian magazine Film Ink from Aug 2010 (scan found here). Some new, and as always amusing quotes from Tom. The allegories never get old!
British star on the rise Tom Hardy knows that a role in Christopher Nolan’s new sci-fi thriller is a true career booster … even if he still doesn’t really know what the film is about.
“It was a bit like eating an elephant, really,” admits British actor Tom Hardy, describing his struggle to comprehend the lofty concepts behind Christopher Nolan’s Inception. “I got through it bit by bit.” Hardy leans forward, and lowers his voice. “I’m not going to lie to you,” he confides. “I had to read the script about thirty times. It was far too complex for me! I relied entirely on Chris to walk me through the whole thing. That relationship with Chris was vital and essential to know (a) what was going on at any given time, and (b) to isolate specific scenes, objective by objective. But after a while, it became part of the process. I’d go up to Chris and ask him what was going on, and then I’d get back to work and mingle. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process, even though it was very complicated.”
Not that anyone is accusing Nolan of pulling off a 21st century version of The Emperor’s New Clothes in Inception, but – as a member of an A-list ensemble cast – Hardy fesses up to a certain shame in not entirely understanding exactly what the film may or may not be about. One thing that he’s certain of however, is that there was no way that he was going to pass up a chance to work with the visionary director … to the point of almost lying to get the role. “When Chris called me, I was in Pittsburgh doing a film about cage fighting,” Hardy says, referring to his role as the son of Nick Nolte’s alcoholic former boxer in the upcoming film, Warrior. “I was desperate to be in any other film with nice people who didn’t beat me up. And Chris said, ‘Tom, can you ski?’” Hardy mimics in a spot-on impression of Nolan’s crisp British accent. “I went silent because I knew that if I didn’t answer this question correctly, I may never work with Chris Nolan again. Ever. I cannot ski to save my life! With that silence, I thought that honesty was the best policy. Right? At least I was honest, so if I threw it away and I didn’t get the job, I was okay, ‘No, I can’t ski,’ I thought. He goes, ‘All right then, fine.’ But then, when we were shooting, he says, ‘You lied to me! You said that you could ski!’ And I said, ‘I did not! I was silent!’ He goes, ‘And in that silence, I knew that was the silence of a man who’s considering telling me that he could ski.’ Which I was! But I did ski in the end, and it was all good.”
[…]With his thick lips, greased hair, bulging biceps and chestful of tattoos, Hardy’s swaggering style and subtle air of menace immediately suggests trouble. Beneath the façade, FilmInk learns, lies a pussycat. “My tattoos?!” the actor says enthusiastically, when we catch him sharing a ciggie with Leonardo DiCaprio after the interview. “Most of them are done in honour of my son, Louis. He’s two years old now, and I’m so crazy about him that I’ve had three done since he was born.” […]
Describing Nolan’s creative process, Hardy is nothing short of impressed. “He’s like the admiral of a fleet,” the actor enthuses. “He’s got this entire war going on, and in the meantime, he’s chatting to you what happened last week on TV. It’s just an incredibly relaxed environment to work in, which is so unusual. It’s a very admirable quality, which I’ve never seen in anybody. For me, this was one in a billion opportunity.”

The Rum Diary - Official Trailer (2011)
Aug 26, 2011
Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, "The Rum Diary" tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen's financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards down.
Filming began in Puerto Rico in March 2009. It is currently set to be released on October 28, 2011.
Production Hunter S. Thompson wrote the novel The Rum Diary in 1961, but the novel was not published until 1998. The independent production companies Shooting Gallery and SPi Films sought to adapt the novel into a film in 2000, and actor Johnny Depp was signed to star and to serve as executive producer. Nick Nolte was also signed to star alongside Depp. The project did not move past the development stage. During this stage, Hunter S. Thompson became so frustrated as to fire off an obscenity-laden letter calling the process a "waterhead fuckaround".
In 2002, a new producer sought the project, and Benicio del Toro and Josh Hartnett were signed to star in the film adaptation. The second incarnation also did not move past the development stage. In 2007, producer Graham King acquired all rights to the novel and sought to film the adaptation under Warner Independent Pictures. Depp, who previously starred in the 1998 film adaptation of Thompson's novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, was cast as the freelance journalist Paul Kemp. Amber Heard is reported to have won the role out over Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley. Bruce Robinson joined to write the screenplay and to direct The Rum Diary. In 2009, Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil took on the project with the financial backing of King and his production company GK Films. Principal photography began in Puerto Rico on March 25, 2009. Composer Christopher Young has signed on to compose the film's soundtrack.
The alcoholic Robinson had been sober for six-and-a-half years before he started writing the screenplay for The Rum Diary. The filmmaker found himself suffering from writer's block. He started drinking again, a bottle of alcohol a day until he finished the script and then he quit drinking again. He spent a year filming in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Hollywood and resisted drinking until they arrived in Fajardo. Robinson remembers, "It was 100 degrees at two in the morning and very humid. Everyone's drenched in sweat. One of the prop guys goes by with a barrow-load of ice and Coronas. I said: 'Johnny, this doesn't mean anything.' And reached for a Corona." … Some savage drinking took place. When I was no longer in Johnny's environment I went back to sobriety."
