Review: the best Christmas pageant ever
“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is a 2024 adaptation of Barbara Robinson’s 1972 children’s novel, directed by Dallas Jenkins. The film follows the Herdman siblings—known as the “worst kids in the history of the world”—who, despite their notorious behavior, become central figures in their town’s annual Christmas pageant. Their involvement brings a fresh perspective to the traditional nativity…

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022)
Tumblr media
I actually watched this last year, but for some reason didn't review it. Anyway, I needed a re-watch to remember all the gory details.
This Netflix animation is a good one, friends. They've really hit their sweet spot with Christmas animation. It's the classic Christmas ghost story we know and love with Ebeneezer Scrooge (Luke Evans) introduced at the top as a miser with a soft spot for his dog, Prudence. Honestly, the addition of Prudence made this redemption arc a lot more believable for me. Anyway, so, Mr. Scrooge bumps into his nephew Harry Huffman (Fra Fee), who invites him to Christmas dinner as Mr. Scrooge is shaking down Tom Jenkins (Giles Terera) for 25 pounds on Christmas Eve. Of course, Tom Jenkins doesn't have it and Scrooge doesn't have patience for Tom or Harry (maybe he would for Dick, but who's to say), so Scrooge doubles his debt and heads back to his office with Bob Cratchit (Johnny Flynn).
As usual, the first ghost who visits Scrooge is his late business partner, Jacob Marley (Jonathan Pryce). He tells Scrooge about how his greed in life lead to him being chained in death and how Scrooge needs to change his ways to save himself.
Then, the ghost of Christmas Past (Olivia Colman) shows up and takes him through past Christmases with his sister Jen (Jemima Lucy Newman), his old love Isabel Fezziwig (Jessie Buckley), and his old boss Mr. Fezziwig (James Cosmo). Scrooge relives some of the best and worst moments of his life.
The second ghost, of course, is the ghost of Christmas Present (Trevor Dion Nicholas). Present shows him Harry's Christmas party that Scrooge blew off yet again where Harry's wife Hela Huffman (Sheena Bhattessa) goes on about how much Scrooge sucks. A similar scene unfolds at the Cratchit residence during toasts.
Finally, the silent ghost of Christmas Yet to Come takes Scrooge to the future where we find Tom Jenkins and all the other people who owe Scrooge money are celebrating his death with song and dance. Inappropriate, but I would do the same if one person dying meant my student loans stopped existing. Scrooge also discovers the unfortunate death of Tiny Tim Cratchit (Olliver Jenkins and Rupert Turnbull).
We know that when Ebeneezer Scrooge wakes up on Christmas day, he's a changed man and he saves Tiny Tim and makes up with his nephew Harry. It's a classic story told several times in several different ways. So what's special about this one? Well, the original songs are a nice touch. It's a little spooky, which it should be! It's a ghost story! The voice actors in this are phenomenal, and the animation is also really beautiful. Overall, 4.5 stars.

How the Grinch Stole My Heart.
The GREATEST Christmas movie of all time is without a doubt Dr Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” featuring Jim Carrey, and it’s not even close. If you disagree that’s fine just know you are wrong.
Every time I put this on I am fully engaged and cannot be taken away from watching. There is never a dull moment as we watch the Grinch battle his demons (accepting love and Christmas) with the help of Cindy Lou Who.
I can go into how this is a story about the revenge of a social outcast, a kid who was bullied, a town of hypocrites, or a girl who wants everyone to be happy on Christmas. They’re all true.
Tumblr media
I need to find a statistic on how many jokes per minute they packed into this masterpiece of art. Jim Carrey killed this role, and lives in my house rent free all year round with quotable one liners from almost every scene.
“I’m an idiot. You’re an idiot!”
Holiday Who-be What-ee?
That’s not to say the movie isn’t well written other than from a comedic perspective, it’s amazing in every way. Like I said before, at its core this is a revenge story on a kid who was bullied for being different. On top of being funny, it’s sad and dark. Yet it’s also inspiring, optimistic, and heartwarming.
Its credibility is far more than a Christmas comedy.
Another one of its biggest strengths was the decision to use practical effects and make up throughout the movie. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was released in 2000, had they used underdeveloped CGI I believe the memory of this movie would have been forgotten. Instead, it’s a timeless feat of art that will not lose its value to awful techniques and technology.
I think that is why this movie holds up so well among other Christmas movies, it wasn’t trying to be a spectacle. It was just trying to make you laugh.
So many Christmas movies of the early to mid 2000’s have been forgotten because they tried to be something they’re not. Santa is not a superhero and you don’t need CGI fights, music numbers, or fake Christmas spirit littered throughout the movie.
Thank you Mr. Grinch.
I will always watch “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” every Christmas season, I am sure of that. Not only is it my favorite, but it’s both of my brothers favorite too, which only makes it even more special. What is Christmas if not sharing moments with the people you love?
While my family and I wait for next Christmas to obsess over this movie again, we will be dropping quotes throughout the year.
Now, pucker up and kiss it Whoville!

VIOLENT NIGHT (2022)
Tumblr media
Violent Night plays out like Die Hard meets You’re Next but leaning much more into the Christmas aspect of Die Hard. It is technically marked as an action comedy as well as a thriller but I count it as a horror because how terrifying a scenario to have everyone around you killed and suddenly you are a hostage but the only person able and willing to help you out is saying that he is the actual Santa Claus? Some scenes played like a slasher movie, I swear my mom had to cover her eyes! A very fun and different addition to your regular Holiday Haunts!
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tumblr media
Our movie begins with a very disenchanted Santa, the poor guy has had it with Christmas and everyone's lack of spirit. We also meet a family of very rich people who don’t seem to get along very well but who really cares about them because back to Santa who is in that house delivering gifts when suddenly everyone there is being held hostage! Dun dun dun! Santa barely escapes with his life and he has a choice to make, help the family out, or just flee, and Santa goes back in! He wants to save the little girl who is on the nice list even though her family seems like they would all be on the naughty list, especially her father who stole the money from his mom but we will get to that in a bit.
Tumblr media
Turns out Santa used to be a war hammer toting baddie so he makes the baddies pay in a big, big way. Seriously, the shed scene was wack and a half. Santa has been around a long time and married to Mrs. Claus a long time and wants to get back to her in one piece so needs to dispose of these naughty folk and help this family post haste so he can get Christmas back on track! Anyway around now the baddies find out that the little girl's dad stole the money they want to steal so they are REALLY mad. They break the group up for no real reason but plot (I guess) and to make the bad guys easier to kill.
Tumblr media
We get to see some Home Alone style traps that were much more deadly (but then again, how not-deadly were the Home Alone traps really?). A little girl smokes a grown man with a simple trap setup and it was honestly pretty funny. Next Santa comes to the rescue after the traps slow down the girls would-be killer. Then there is a firefight, a little chase, and finally it is Santa against the big Baddie, the Christmas Hater himself! Santa is able to take him down with a little Christmas magic but not before he is shot! But it is okay! Because everyone believes he is Santa! So that magically makes him heal! Okay! Christmas!
Tumblr media
This was cute, fun, gory as hell, and very scary in some moments because I genuinely thought that the little girl (or Santa) was going to die! The bad guys were very, very bad so that is why I have this review on my horror blog. Violent Night was just that, an extremely violent evening and that is why it is one of my Holiday Haunts.

The Claus Family 3 (2022)
Tumblr media
I'm glad it's not just American movies that kind of go off the rails around movie number 3. My prediction did not come true- the whole family does not get involved.
The whole family does go on vacation together to a ski resort for Christmas. Jules (Mo Bakker) and Noel (Jan Decleir) are still working together secretly to deliver presents, but Jules's little sister Noor (Amber Metdepenningen) finds the magic snow globe and goes to the north pole, where she meets some of the elves. Jules finds out about Noor first and gets upset with her, but when Noel finds out, he immediately wants to include her and train her to be Santa, too.
Meanwhile, Suzanne (Bracha van Doesburgh), Jules and Noor's mom, is getting the heat from Jet (Sien Eggers), an old lady whose relationship to the rest of the family I have since forgotten from the first film, to propose to her boyfriend Jef (Kurt Rogiers). Also happening, Noor has weird beef with young skiing prodigy Felix (Celest Henri Cornelis).
Mostly this movie is a fight between Jules and Noor because Noor wants to be involved, but Jules thinks she's too young and won't listen to anyone else about it. Noel ends up in a Mexican prison for a minute, which brought up a lot of questions for me as an American about why a Mexican prison would have that reputation in Belgium. It was kind of interesting to hear bits of Spanish in all the Dutch, though.
Overall, this is chaotic and their poor mother really is in the dark and I wish, for her own sake, that she knew what her children were up to around Christmas. I understand the sibling dynamics at play, but it was kind of painful to watch. This wasn't the worst 3rd movie in a series I've seen, but I'm not sure why this series needed to continue to this point. It would make more sense to have a character pass away and have everyone else dealing with that than this weird high-stakes vacation. Overall, 2 stars.

Just the Ticket #132: Lethal Weapon (2023 Christmas Special)
Merry Christmas, Ticketholders!
Lethal Finale was supposed to have released this year, but without a definitive director and this year's SAG/AFTRA strike, it has curled up in Development Hell for a long winter's nap.
But the first Lethal Weapon entry's status as a Christmas movie is much less hotly contested than Die Hard, and it has some interesting connections to that franchise. So my gift to you this season is a review of the four movies in the Lethal Weapon franchise thus far, plus some personal Mandela memories and a special recommendation to make your holidays merry and bright.
Enjoy!
