Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022)

I actually watched this last year, but for some reason didn't review it. Anyway, I needed a re-watch to remember all the gory details.

This Netflix animation is a good one, friends. They've really hit their sweet spot with Christmas animation. It's the classic Christmas ghost story we know and love with Ebeneezer Scrooge (Luke Evans) introduced at the top as a miser with a soft spot for his dog, Prudence. Honestly, the addition of Prudence made this redemption arc a lot more believable for me. Anyway, so, Mr. Scrooge bumps into his nephew Harry Huffman (Fra Fee), who invites him to Christmas dinner as Mr. Scrooge is shaking down Tom Jenkins (Giles Terera) for 25 pounds on Christmas Eve. Of course, Tom Jenkins doesn't have it and Scrooge doesn't have patience for Tom or Harry (maybe he would for Dick, but who's to say), so Scrooge doubles his debt and heads back to his office with Bob Cratchit (Johnny Flynn).

As usual, the first ghost who visits Scrooge is his late business partner, Jacob Marley (Jonathan Pryce). He tells Scrooge about how his greed in life lead to him being chained in death and how Scrooge needs to change his ways to save himself.

Then, the ghost of Christmas Past (Olivia Colman) shows up and takes him through past Christmases with his sister Jen (Jemima Lucy Newman), his old love Isabel Fezziwig (Jessie Buckley), and his old boss Mr. Fezziwig (James Cosmo). Scrooge relives some of the best and worst moments of his life.

The second ghost, of course, is the ghost of Christmas Present (Trevor Dion Nicholas). Present shows him Harry's Christmas party that Scrooge blew off yet again where Harry's wife Hela Huffman (Sheena Bhattessa) goes on about how much Scrooge sucks. A similar scene unfolds at the Cratchit residence during toasts.

Finally, the silent ghost of Christmas Yet to Come takes Scrooge to the future where we find Tom Jenkins and all the other people who owe Scrooge money are celebrating his death with song and dance. Inappropriate, but I would do the same if one person dying meant my student loans stopped existing. Scrooge also discovers the unfortunate death of Tiny Tim Cratchit (Olliver Jenkins and Rupert Turnbull).

We know that when Ebeneezer Scrooge wakes up on Christmas day, he's a changed man and he saves Tiny Tim and makes up with his nephew Harry. It's a classic story told several times in several different ways. So what's special about this one? Well, the original songs are a nice touch. It's a little spooky, which it should be! It's a ghost story! The voice actors in this are phenomenal, and the animation is also really beautiful. Overall, 4.5 stars.

PHYLLIS LOGAN IN PADDINGTON PRESCHOOL SERIES:

Nickelodeon has ordered a TV series based on the popular British character, Paddington, with Ben Whishaw back to voice the character as he did in the two big-screen films.

Ordered for 26 episodes, “The Adventures of Paddington” centers on a younger Paddington as he writes letters to Aunt Lucy celebrating the new things he has discovered through the day’s exciting activities. Following its U.S. launch, “The Adventures of Paddington” will roll out on the net’s international channels and branded blocks beginning March 2020.

Along with Whishaw, new cast members include Morwenna Banks, Bobby Beynon, Sheena Bhattessa, Darren Boyd, Noel Clarke, Phyllis Logan, Monica Lopera, Sabrina Newton-Fisher, David Schofield, Reece Shearsmith, Liz Sutherland-Lim and Jeremiah Waysome. Gary Barlow will also record a new theme song for the series.

The series will debut on Jan. 20. In advance of the series debut, Nickelodeon will air a holiday presentation of “Paddington Finds a Pigeon/Paddington and the Chores List,” on Friday, Dec. 20.

The series is from Heyday Films and Studiocanal, in association with Copyrights. “The Adventures of Paddington” is directed by Adam Shaw and Chris Drew of BlueZoo, and developed for television and written by Jon Foster and James Lamont.

Paddington Bear was created in the late 1950s by British author Michael Bond and illustrator Peggy Fortnum and first appeared in children’s literature. Dimension Films produced a big-screen animated film in 2015, which grossed $268 million worldwide. A Warner Bros.-produced sequel in 2018 grossed $227 million.

Time-Traveling Aliens Ruin New Year’s Eve in the Trailer for CANARIES

‘In Wales, no one can hear you scream.‘ The trailer for Canaries promises horror and silliness in the British tradition of Shaun of the Dead.

There are a lot of things happening in this trailer that don’t seem to make much sense, but perhaps that’s the point. There is some sort of governmental body monitoring the arrival of time-traveling aliens; unsuspecting, partying locals; aliens with hands like Dr. Seuss’ Whos from Whoville. It’s a lot to decipher in a short amount of time. Also, the aliens wear yellow raincoats. Is that where the film’s name, Canaries, comes from? (Because canaries are yellow…)

The vague, but official, synopsis, according to IMDB:

The first wave of an alien invasion coincides with a New Year’s Eve party in the Welsh Valleys.

  The Trailer for Canaries Brings the Silly

Written and directed by Peter Stray (The Outlier), Canaries tells the story of an alien invasion that takes place during a New Year’s Eve party in the tiny, suburban town of Cwmtwrch in Wales. These humanoid hybrids from outer space are not traditional cinematic aliens, though; they are not restricted by the man made construct of time and can travel through it, at will, making them particularly dangerous.

Canaries premiered at Frightfest in 2017 and is Stray’s first feature length film. It stars Hannah Daniel (Hinterland), Robert Pugh (Mr. Selfridge), Sheena Bhattessa (Doctors), and Craig Russell (Hollyoaks), who is also credited as a producer. These names are relatively unknown to audiences outside of the United Kingdom, but if the trailer for this campy horror-comedy is any indication of how funny and silly the full movie is, I’m sure Canaries and its stars will develop a loyal following.

There is no official or projected release date or information on how the film will be distributed, but if you have a chance to see this film, I say, Go for it! It looks like a fun film and please report back about why the damned aliens are wearing raincoats!

Rehearsal images have been released for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Queen Anne. The production stars Romola Garai as Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough and Emma Cunniffe as Queen Anne.

After originally opening at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2015, Queen Anne will transfer to Theatre Royal Haymarket for a thirteen week limited run from 30 June until 30 September, with a press night on 10 July.

Written by Helen Edmundson (The Heresy of Love, RSC) and directed by Natalie Abrahami (Happy Days, Young Vic), this gripping new play explores the life of one of England’s little-known sovereigns and her friendship with her childhood confidante Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. A timely production for turbulent political climes, the reign of Queen Anne saw the rise of the free press as well as the Act of Union between England and Scotland.

Romola Garai will star as Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough alongside Emma Cunniffe as the eponymous monarch in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Queen Anne.

Completing the cast will be Daisy Ashford as Lady Clarendon, Sheena Bhattessa as Lady Somerset, Gabrielle Brooks as Jezebel and Lady Russell, Dave Fishley as King William III and Groom, Jonny Glynn as Jonathan Swift, Chu Omambala as John Churchill and Sid Sagar as Samuel Masham and Inns of Court Singer.

They join the previously announced Jonathan Christie (Arthur Maynwaring), Michael Fenton Stevens (Dr John Radcliffe), James Garnon (Robert Harley), Richard Hope (Sidney Godolphin), Hywel Morgan (Prince George), Beth Park (Abigail Hill) and Carl Prekopp (Daniel Defoe).
