12 Days of Christmas Anime, Day 12: Buddy Daddies & Why We Need Many Christmases

A Christmas encounter with an orphaned pre-schooler forever changes the lives of two hitmen in P.A. Works’ comedy Buddy Daddies. Not your usual Christmas anime episode! (Especially considering the on-screen executions, trigger warning!) But don’t worry, Buddy Daddies is just getting started: the final three episodes also revolve around Christmas, one year later, and it’s in considering these two Christmases together—what has changed and what hasn’t—that the series stumbles into something meaningful, creating an apt picture of the life of faith. You see, what Buddy Daddies shows us is that one “Christmas encounter” is never the whole story; instead, one Christmas leads always to the next and the next after that. It is many Christmases—and not just one perfect Day—that make up the walk of faith.

"Catrinas" is a dark fantasy, surrealist, and gothic mixed media post-art series.

The Catrinas series vibrantly explores the iconic Mexican Catrina as an interstitial force between the human and the nonhuman. Created by caricaturist José Guadalupe Posada as a critique of society, La Catrina was later reimagined by Diego Rivera, solidifying her status as a beloved icon.

Each piece in this series is titled Catrina, inviting viewers to see her as a timeless archetype that embodies universal death and critiques societal norms. This repetition encourages exploration of identity as an infinite series of differences, questioning the notion of a 'fixed' self and emphasizing La Catrina as a force reflecting mortality and social commentary.

Originally mocking superficiality and class hypocrisy, La Catrina's spirit of satire endures. This series captures that essence and reimagines her in surreal, gothic worlds where the mundane merges with dark fantasy, inviting sensory exploration of difference, mortality, and cultural memory through a uniquely Mexican style.

12 Days of Christmas Anime, Day 1: Martian Successor Nadesico’s Epiphanies

t’s the year 2199. The bright future of humanity is frustrated when alien invaders unleash radioactive meteorite bombs, poisoning Earth. But a message arrives from Mars: There’s hope for salvation out there! Rebuilding the crown jewel of the Japanese Imperial Fleet, the WW2 battleship Yamato, as a spaceship, a courageous crew sets out for the stars, the tale of their adventures ultimately inspiring genre-defining series like Gundam, Harlock, and Macross and igniting the love of anime in the heart of a young Hideaki Anno, who regarded Space Battleship Yamato as his all-time favorite anime.

With glory comes emulation, inspiration, and also subversion and parody. And sometimes, the parody manages to shine an unexpected light on the original. Last year, I was considering abandoning Martian Successor Nadesico, a renowned mecha comedy from 1987 set in a Yamato-like spaceship that lovingly pokes fun at this and other beloved series by way of Looney Tunes-style craziness. (Apparently, the very name is a pun, coming from the Japanese phrase “Yamato nadeshiko.”) But then, suddenly, things got serious.

The Christmas episode connected everything: Hidden layers of the story were revealed, and I found fascinating thematic parallels with Evangelion, Gundam, and Haruhi. And also with…the origin of the Twelve Days of Christmas. That is, the feast of the Epiphany.
