Christmas is a weird time. I never feel as happy as I want to feel, it’s not like mental illness takes a winter holiday. The gloom is starting to set in, I’m tired, I wish things were easier, I wish I could enjoy today and forget for a moment all the other life shit that occupies my mind.

I think about the Christmas story, and no matter how wonderful Jesus’ birth story is in hindsight, I image for Mary and Joseph it was anything but in the moment. Painful, unhygienic, dangerous - in more ways than one x I’m sure Mary grieved the introduction to Motherhood she hoped she’d have, Joseph feeling like he’d failed as a provider. And yet God was faithful.

So honestly I have no real conclusions, but I know even when this time of year isn’t what it’s cracked up to be, God is there, and no matter how crappy and ‘end-of-the-world-doom’ I feel, I’ll survive.

You will too - I hope this time is gentle with you.

In the first three weeks of September this ending pandemic-infested year, I was revisiting two BBC documentaries: one was Western Civilization: A Personal View by Kenneth Clarke; The Story of Art Painting by Sister Wendy Beckett, another.

The greatest BBC documentary ever was being said of that was the former (which is why I would again and again revisit it again, which somehow I could not do unless I leave where I am often in - the Westernmost province of Canada, British Columbia.) There are only humble reasons why I’d go back to Sister Wendy’s: I just didn’t know enough about art. I remember her before memorably explaining to me great art paintings.

It is to explain our own existence as well why I am hovering, watching these documentaries. I currently don’t have a job, and have time on my hands. I wanted to know - and still want to know- whether we do matter at all. Or, of course we do, but when. . . at what point?

Viewing Sister Wendy’s first episodes of her 1990s documentary made the answer I was seeking obvious: we never really mattered until Christ came here. This said, all art before his arrival, was all that I should start looking for before Wednesday. Come Wednesday, the middle of the week, can I tell myself Christ has already come (the universe being weekly remade by God every week) and then only from that point should we really start looking at ourselves, whom God did found worthy of assuming being.

God made Adam and Eve in his own image. But it took the Second Adam to have that image taken seriously and for real.

Family is not always blood

I've learnt that this year

Family is the people who pray with you, the people who cheer you on the loudest and cheer you on even when you're not there

The people who welcome you in no questions asked

The people who choose you to be in their lives and who you choose to be in yours

Family is not always blood

Or rather often, it's by the Saviour's blood that you find your true family

Between God, and His people, especially the ones He's sent to remind you, however softly, that yes, you are loved, and there are so many beautiful reasons to keep going
