God Jul! Tanngrisnir (teeth grinder") is one of goats who pull the chariot of Thor in Norse mythology. This myth may have filtered down into The Yule Goat. A scary costume worn by Scandanavian carolers (Krampus?) A Swedish invisible spirit that would check on holiday preparations. And in modern Scandinavia, a popular Christmas ornament. Merry Christmas!

Okay, I’m a little late for the actual Winter Solstice, BUT somehow barely made it in time for Christmas Day! When I was out for a run yesterday morning I had this idea flash in my mind, so I rushed yesterday and today to whip out this artwork! It is always SO nice when inspiration is flowing.

Today is the first day of winter, the longest night, and the night when Yggdrasil, the Way of Birds (or The Milky Way, in classical parlance) will be at its most direct and impressive, towering over the land as a starry, glittering bridge between the worlds of the living and the dead. It is a wonderful night for looking at the stars as our ancestors saw them, and for telling the stories that our ancestors have passed down to us. Tonight is a special night, for it is tonight that Odin rides his chariot (Ursa Major) with the host of honored ancestors (Auriga) in the North. Fifteen hundred years ago, our ancestors would have seen the moon himself caught in the jaws of the wolf (Hyades) on this night, a night which, in the far North, would have seemed to have no end. Stay up late enough, and watch the stars long enough, and you will see the slow, steady dance of Thor (Ursa Minor) and The Great Dragon as they move through the sky right at the northern horizon (At least at my latitude -- it will be higher in the sky if you're further North.) Freyja (Pleiades) and Frigga (Orion) will descend toward the dawn in the west with the fall of the night while Loki (Sirius) raises his torch and climbs the bridge to find his prominence at the darkest part of the night. You can see them all tonight, see the way their stories play out across the sky, and do it all right from your own backyard. So bundle up, feast on something delicious, raise a drink for the ancestors and watch the cycle of their stories unfold across the stars on this, the longest night of the year! Happy Yule!
