Top 5 TV series to keep you entertained through this heatwave:
1. The After Party (Apple TV) A modern millennial whodunnit comedy set over the course of one night at a high school reunion and, you guessed it, the after party! The assemble cast is great. I don't typically love a Franco, but you're supposed to think he sucks, so it works. Ilana Glaser is adorable as always and I love this role for her. Ben Schwartz gets a musical episode and overall really shines as more than a John Ralphio 2D type character, even though I also adore when he does that as well! Tiffany Haddish has some incredible lines as the detective and without giving too much away, each character gets a backstory episode and I really love how they do this! Sam Richardson and Zoe Chao are popping up everywhere together (eh hem Senior Year on Netflix!) and I loved seeing their faces together again in this. They are super adorable in this will they, won't they dynamic. Go put it on and you'll definitely want to binge till the end to solve the mystery!
#theafterparty #ilanaglazer #benschwartz #tiffanyhaddish #samrichardson #zoechao
2. High Desert (Apple TV) Patricia Arquette plays Peggy, a Pioneertown actress turn private eye who after the death of her mother played by Bernadette Peters, is making her way in the world in gorgeous vintage westernwear and 70's sunglasses with a wonderful dead-pan sense of humor. I could pretty much watch Patricia Arquette do anything, and this series allows just that! You won't expect where it's going and to me this series is the perfect tone. The other casting is fantastic as well. Matt Dillon plays her ex and Christine Taylor plays her sister! It's wonderfully written, hilarious, and between the desert back drop and vintage prints I was so satisfied with how good and visually appealing this show is! Sad story that is didn't get renewed, but maybe we can start a petition to bring it back because I really want to see how this story evolves. If that doesn't work, I will happily rewatch this season since I found it to be really outstanding!
#highdesert #patriciaarquette #bernadettepeters #mattdillon #christinetaylor
3. Poker Face (Peacock) I know, I know, another mystery show and this time a role Jessica Fletcher would be jealous of? Natasha Lyonne's Poker Face is downright brilliant! She is so fun to watch as she interacts with tons of characters (including Judith Light) on her road trip or escape from which mountain? Not to give any spoilers, we'll just say she's driving a vintage car and each episode is kinda a different storyline. There is some continuity between the episodes but they all kinda stand on their own as well. I really liked this about it. It harkens back to the days of Murder She Wrote, Columbo, and maybe even 21 Jumpstreet! Her character, Charlie Cale's vintage looks are all so sweet and I really appreciated her wardrobe as it pertains to each new storyline. The acting is a real treat and you'll definitely want to pack snacks for this little roadside adventure.
#pokerface #natashalyonne #judithlight #murdershewrote
4. The Horror of Dolores Roach (Amazon Prime) This series has the tiniest bit of a slow start, but the promise of a Cyndi Lauper cameo plus an original song on the soundtrack made me stick with it and I'm so glad I did! This show is super original with has a wonderfully dark sense of humor. Dolores, played by Justina Machado is recently out of prison and uses her "magic hands" as a masseuse to land on her feet. The character Luis, comes us with creative ways to solve their problems and should be creepy from the start but comes across endearing as a real testament to the likability of the actor Alejandro Hernandez. I really loved seeing how this story evolved throughout the season.

5. Survival of the Thickest (Netflix) Michelle Buteau is a mood and her world is where I want to live all summer long! This show is a wonderful watch in every way! Michelle is so funny and the story is poignant while remaining silly and very rewatchable. I'm already starting it for the second time. My favorite episode is the last one, due to the beautiful story arc, so I'm just gonna have to watch them all again to get there! I'm so glad this series came out this summer. It is such a lovely tribute to friendship, working hard, having integrity, and above all fun! We need all the queer joy we can get right now! Thank you Michelle Buteau!

Zoolander (2001)
Tumblr media
With its wall-to-wall, absurdly stupid characters, you wouldn't expect any legitimate wit or intelligence from Zoolander but that would be a mistake. It's an enjoyable, endlessly quotable, and memorable satire of the fashion industry.
Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) is a self-absorbed, world-famous, good-natured but not dim-witted male fashion model. After he hits rock bottom, he becomes embroiled in a plot to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Writers Drake Sather and Ben Stiller (who also directs) get far more material out of the concept of "dumb fashion models" than you'd think was possible. Derek Zoolander misunderstands crucial information and uses words he doesn’t understand. His rival Hansel (Owen Wilson) is the kind of would-be spiritualist that thinks he’s deep because he’s base jumped half a dozen times and has slept with women from all around the world. The man behind the conspiracy, Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell) has a plan so dumb it might just work. Zoolander pulls you into this world where intelligence is undesirable because the fashion industry is all about being shallow. The joke could get old quickly, but we’re given several straight men and women to make this absurdity hilarious. Journalist Matilda Jeffries (Christine Taylor) is us. She’s the one that asks “why would never wear that? There’s only about 5$ worth of material in that shirt so how can it cost $1,000?”. In this world, that's the kind of question no one can answer because it's scratching the surface of what you should be questioning. She knows what's at stake but unfortunately, her intelligence means it'll all fall upon deaf ears.
Zoolander is filled with big laughs, the kind you can't wait to share with your friends so you can quote the scenes to each other after. There’s an incident at a gas station so silly it's impossible to forget. Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood will never sound the same, "What is this? A *blank* for ants?!" will become part of your vernacular. Traditional romantic comedy conventions are amusingly turned on their heads, to the audience’s delight. I'm going to single out the old “frumpy attractive woman who just needs to put her hair down” cliché as a favorite. Will Ferrell is used in just the right amount, as are several other comedians and celebrities who could've easily been annoying.
I’ll fault Zoolander for two things. The first is a lame erection joke that's as absurd as the Magnum look and the "janitor makeup” scene but is more than a bit embarrassing to watch. The second flat is some clumsy exposition delivered by two characters who disappear once their info dump is done. When you look at those isolated moments, you wonder if the script was rushed because they’re sloppy in an otherwise consistent film.
If it's been a while since you've watched Zoolander, give it another watch. It holds up well and even if you think you've seen/memorized all of its best gags, there are some I know you've missed. Pay attention to what's happening in the background and you'll find some new favorites, maybe even one you can get your friends to add their Rolodex. (On DVD, February 15, 2016)

Thoughts : The Craft (1996)
Tumblr media
The 1990s were an interesting time in movies, where teenage films still had edge and substance to them.  A handful of actors and actresses were carving out names for themselves that, at the time, seemed like lasting ones, and the projects these particular actors got involved with piqued my interest.  With a core group of actresses that I enjoyed, it was no surprise that I gravitated towards The Craft, and it is no surprise that I still enjoy the film to this day.  With Halloween right around the corner, I figured I had to get in a movie about witches, and this one is my go to.
Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney) is new to San Francisco, having just moved from Los Angeles with her father and stepmom.  In an attempt to find a social circle at school, Sarah gravitates towards a group of outcast girls that most of the school have labelled as witches : the shy Bonnie (Neve Campbell), the assertive Nancy (Fairuza Balk), and the outgoing Rochelle (Rachel True).  Almost instantly, Sarah also develops a crush on the most popular boy in the school, Chris (Skeet Ulrich).  Unbeknownst to the group of girls, Sarah seems to have a supernatural ability already present in her, something immediately picked up on by Lirio (Assumpta Sema), the local bookstore owner that the girls harass while they explore their interest in witchcraft.  The girls are excited, however, because Sarah potentially completes their coven, and the group immediately begins to experiment with spells.  Much to their surprise, the spells begin to work, but at a great cost, as the girls begin to exhibit personality traits out of their normal range, including Bonnie’s sudden obsession with looks and Nancy’s obsession with power.  Realizing that things are spiraling out of control, Sarah is forced to take actions in order to save her friends, and herself, from themselves.
Mixing the didactic, powerful nature of the Wiccan lifestyle with the brash, often overly emotional nature of high school works extremely well for this narrative, like Heathers with a mystical element thrown into the picture.  Four young girls that are driven by what others think of them and a need to be respected (if not admired or feared) are the perfect catalyst for an ‘absolute power corrupts absolutely’ situation, as their lack of understanding the ramifications of what seem like simple choices and decisions to them quickly spiral out of control.  In high school, most of us were not yet fully developed in terms of compassion towards our peers, even those that mock us, ridicule us or dislike us, so it’s easy to understand why, when gifted with great power, three of the four girls would choose minuscule goals in regards to the grand scheme of things, while one would go 180 degrees in the opposite direction by choosing to basically become a living deity.  Like any good tale of the discovery of power, their choices eventually tear the group apart from the inside, forcing each of them to either come to grips with the bigger picture or suffer ultimate consequences.
For a movie of this type, it surprisingly embraces a comedic side that works quite well.  Be it the lack of a filter that teenagers are blessed with, or simply the casting of actors and actresses that are aware and present enough in their characters to be able to add depth to their performances, the funny moments in the film are abundant without being distracting.  This could be due in part to the writing as well, which is very well balanced between an informative reflection on the Wiccan lifestyle and an honest look at the 1990s high school experience, warts and all.  The humor even manages to incorporate references to relevant films, such as the ‘bitches of Eastwick’ or ‘Stepford wives’ one-liners, immediately providing both laughs and context.
In terms of production value, the film is relatively standard issue.  Momentary slight uses of special effects, usually reserved in their application, do work well, with the majority of the stunts and effects being implemented by practical means rather than created in post-production.  The only thing that has really stood out in any sort of context other than positive to me, over the years, has been the soundtrack.  As I’ve gotten older, and my knowledge of music has widened, I began to notice that the lion’s share of the soundtrack is made up of ambitious attempts at covers that don’t always quite hit the mark.  Versions of Tomorrow Never Knows, How Soon is Now?, and Witches Song, while appropriate in context, ultimately serve as reminders for the greatness of the originals, which slightly derails focus on the film.  The one exception, in my opinion, is Heather Nova’s cover of I Have the Touch used to close the film... maybe it’s because I used to sweep theaters to this closing credit song, and after 30 or 40 listens, it’s embedded in my head, but I do appreciate that version of that song more so than the other covers present in the film.
Robin Tunney is a good casting choice for lead, as she manages to subtly provide the range needed to cover aspects of shyness, slyness, revenge and regret in regards to her character’s arc.  Fairuza Balk was born to play her role, bringing her authentic look and knowledge to the table in order to invoke (no pun intended) the spirit of a young power hungry Wiccan.  Rachel True seems like an odd choice on paper, but her lightness and caring nature helps bring a sense of true humanity to the group.  Neve Campbell does a good job of portraying the ugly duckling trope, fully owning her eventual transformation after selling a reserved, embarrassed nature during the first third of the film.  Skeet Ulrich plays his role pretty much by the numbers, eventually becoming nothing more than a puppet to Tunney, while Nathaniel Marston and (especially) Breckin Meyer provide much needed comic relief in order to not make their group deplorable as well.  Assumpta Sema and the air of mystery she provides play well in contrast to the young girls.  Brief appearances by Cliff DeYoung and Christine Taylor (in possibly her only mean role of her career) also stand out.
The Craft doesn’t necessarily fall on the spooky spectrum, per se, but it is certainly a ‘guilty’ pleasure of mine with a ton of actresses and actors I’ve been a fan of even before the film came out.  In my opinion, after not having seen it for many years, it still holds up overall, and may be worth checking out if you’re unfamiliar or curious.

Christine Taylor: Is She divorced by Ben Stiller or not?
After 18 years together, HOLLYWOOD couple Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor have announced their shock split in 2017. The couple, who have been married for 17 years and share two kids, have played together in movies like Zoolander and Dodgeball, but who is the actress of 48 years?
Tumblr media
Who exactly is Christine Taylor? American actress Christine Joan Taylor Stiller was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on 30 July 1971. The 48-year-old is best known for playing roles in The Wedding Singer, Zoolander, and DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story, and in The Brady Bunch Movie and A Very Brady Sequel, Marcia Brady. Christine began her acting career on Nickelodeon TV series Hey Dude in 1989, where she played Melody Hanson as the lifeguard. She appeared in 1995 in The Brady Bunch Movie as Marcia Brady, and later in A Very Brady Sequel. Christine also made guest appearances on the Ellen, Seinfeld and Friends television show. She played school bully Laura Lizzie in the 1996 movie The Craft and then starred in the 1998 comedy The Wedding Singer as Drew Barrymore's cousin, Holly Sullivan.
Tumblr media
Christine was married on 13 May 2000 to fellow actor Ben Stiller. The couple met together as they made TV show Heat Vision and Jack. In movies like Zoolander, Dodgeball: A Real Underdog Story, Tropic Thunder and Zoolander 2 and Arrested Development and Curb Your Excitement in the TV show, the pair starred together. Why Divorced Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor? In 2017, Ben and Christine ended their 17-year marriage, revealing that they are separating while remaining close friends. Together, the couple have two children, daughter Ella Olivia, 18, and son Quinlin Dempsey, 14. At the time, they issued a statement to ET about their surprise split, saying: "With great love and mutual respect, and the 18 years we spent together as a couple, we made the decision to separate. “Our priority will continue to be raising our children as devoted parents and the closest of friends. We kindly ask that the media respect our privacy at this time.
Tumblr media
After the announcement of their separation, neither Taylor nor Stiller have legitimately applied for divorce and have since been seen together on public family trips and red carpet events. The separation was due to conflicting schedules, a source revealing, according to People: "It gets tough-he is got a very busy Hollywood career and she is been much focused on being a mum. "They are a very loving family, Christine and Ben respect each other and will do anything to make sure their kids are happy." Who is Dating Ben Stiller now? The couple remained close after their separation and it looks like they might have reconciled on September 22, 2019, following a joint appearance at the 71st Primetime Emmys. Fans are delighted with rumors that Ben and Christine might give a second chance to their marriage-the exes were all smiles together on the purple Emmys carpet posing arm-in-arm. During his early cinema career, Stiller dated many actresses including Jeanne Tripplehorn, Calista Flockhart and Amanda Peet.
