Pizan's The Status of Women & the Reformation
The Book of the City of the Ladies (1405) by Christine de Pizan (l. 1364 - c. 1430) is considered by many scholars to be the first work of feminist literature, predating A Vindication of the Rights of Women (1792) by Mary Wollstonecraft by almost 400 years in advocating for the equality of women in society.

. ©Paula Mayor paulamayor.es • • #ChristinedePizan #mujeres #8m #feminista #feminismo #noesno #abortolegal #acoruña #galicia #paulamayor #paulamayorart #ilustracion #marzoenfemenino #girlpower #visibilidad #thankafeminist https://www.instagram.com/p/BvZWAdznFt5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=207hnyi37s0v

Christine de Pizan
Author, poet, wife and mother. Christine de Pizan became well known for her works on women's equality during the reign of Charles VI (think Battle of Agincourt, although King Charles VI actually did not command this battle due to psychotic illnesses he was suffering from).
She created what are called Illuminated Manuscripts, which was essentially using illustrations to depict what was being transcribed. This was important for the time because most people could not read, so illustrations were important for knowing what was going on in the manuscripts. But what really set her apart was when another author, Jean de Meun, made sexist remarks in one of his books about women being “seducers”. Christine de Pizan launched a direct attack on him by writing her own book The Tale of the Rose (after his book Romance of the Rose) claiming his views “misogynistic, vulgar, immoral and slanderous to women”. She went on to have members of the royal courts (yes, multiple) love her work and even become patrons.
What seems to be her most famous work however is The Book of the City of Ladies (or Le Livre de la Cite des Dames) in which she writes about the “heroism of women throughout history and the oppression they faced in medieval Europe”. In this book, she writes about a city, an utopia, built just for women and free of misogyny. I don’t know about you, but this sounds like something I would love to sink into a chair and read. Added to Wishlist.
“If it were customary to send little girls to school and teach them the same subjects as are taught to boys, they would learn just as fully and would understand the subtleties of all arts and sciences” - The Book of the City of Ladies.
I have included a few images depicting some of her works. In particular the third photo showing de Pizan herself working alongside the personifications of Rectitude, Reason and Justice to build this utopian cite des dames.

Marie Dentière's A Very Useful Epistle
A Very Useful Epistle (Epistre tres utile, 1539) is an open letter by the female reformer Marie Dentière (l. c. 1495-1561) to Marguerite of Navarre (l. 1492-1549) advocating for a greater role for women in the work of the Protestant Reformation. The letter was suppressed by the city council of Geneva, and Dentière's arguments were ignored by male reformers.

Today seemed like the day for a classic. The City of Ladies by Christine de Pizan who loved from 1364 to 1430! Certainly no one ever told me in school that women were writing works of feminism in the *Middle Ages*. Anyway, Pizan has had quite enough of reading books written by men about how women are terrible, so she writes her own book, constructing a rhetorical city populated by valiant and faithful women from history (pagan, Jew, and Christian alike), building up a foundation, windows, and towers to clear womankind of those evils they have been accused of, and establish their virtues. She then goes further to argue for the education and self-determination of women. . A gem I might never have discovered but for the Penguin Great Ideas series. . . #womenintranslation #womenintranslationmonth #witmonth #translatedfromfrench #christinedepizan #thecityofladies #rosalindbrowngrant #penguingreatideas #feministclassics
