Today seemed like the day for a classic. The City of Ladies by Christine de Pizan who loved from 1364 to 1430! Certainly no one ever told me in school that women were writing works of feminism in the *Middle Ages*. Anyway, Pizan has had quite enough of reading books written by men about how women are terrible, so she writes her own book, constructing a rhetorical city populated by valiant and faithful women from history (pagan, Jew, and Christian alike), building up a foundation, windows, and towers to clear womankind of those evils they have been accused of, and establish their virtues. She then goes further to argue for the education and self-determination of women. . A gem I might never have discovered but for the Penguin Great Ideas series. . . #womenintranslation #womenintranslationmonth #witmonth #translatedfromfrench #christinedepizan #thecityofladies #rosalindbrowngrant #penguingreatideas #feministclassics
