Cafe Chris, Amsterdam

Location:  Bloemstraat 42, 1015 TB Amsterdam, Netherlands Cafe Chris is the oldest establishment in Amsterdam, founded in 1624 in the Jordaan district. Due to its dark interior, it is also called “Brown Cafe”. Once upon a time, workers who were building the Westerkerk bell tower came here for wages. The cafe still has old floorboards, backlit windows, and dark wood paneling.

Gran Caffe Quadri, Venice

Location: Piazza San Marco, 121, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy The establishment opened its doors in 1638 - then it was called Il Rimedio. Malvasia wine was served here and was said to “invigorate the body and awaken the mind.” In 1775, merchant Giorgio Quadri and his wife Naxina, who arrived from Corfu, decided to invest in this cafe. This is how the history of Gran Caffe Quadri began. In 1830, management passed to the Vaerini brothers, who expanded the establishment by one more floor. In 2011, the Alaimo family bought the cafe. In 2018, Gran Caffe Quadri underwent a major renovation. The famous French creative and designer Philippe Starck was invited to transform it.

Cafe Procope, Paris

Location: 13 Rue de l'Ancienne Comédie, 75006 Paris, France Café Procope is the first literary café in Paris. It was discovered in 1686 by Sicilian immigrant Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli - after whom it took its name. Following the traditions of the Procopio family, who ran the establishment for many years, the cafe serves sorbet and granita (crushed ice), the forerunners of ice cream. King Louis XIV appointed Café Procope as the exclusive producer of sorbets. Its famous visitors include Napoleon, Honoré de Balzac, Paul Verlaine, Victor Hugo and Voltaire.

Cafe Tomaselli, Salzburg

Location: Alter Markt 9, 5020 Salzburg, Austria In the center of Salzburg, on the Alter Markt square, there is the Tomaselli cafe, perhaps one of the most famous in the world. Family-owned for centuries, this restaurant embodies stylish Austrian coffee culture. The first cafe was opened here in 1703, and in 1852 it was bought by Karl Tomaselli. Mozart and his wife Constance, playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and composer Carl Weber loved to visit it. Cafe Tomaselli recommends trying the Einspänner (double espresso with cold whipped cream) and Melange (an espresso-based coffee drink with the addition of heated and frothed milk and whipped cream).

Caffe Florian, Venice

Location: Piazza San Marco, 57, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy Caffe Florian is one of the first cafes in what is now Italy. It was opened in 1720 under the name Alla Venezia Trionfante. The establishment gained popularity due to the fact that both men and women could visit it - in those years this was very rare. Over time, the cafe began to be called Florian - in honor of the owner Floriani Francesconi. In 1760, the sales point for Venice's first newspaper, Gazzetta Veneta, was opened here. At different times, the cafe was visited by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Johann Goethe, Charles Dickens, George Byron, Giacomo Casanova, Ernest Hemingway and others. Today, Caffe Florian offers more than 30 varieties of coffee drinks, many desserts, salads and light snacks.

Antico Caffe Greco, Rome

Location: Via dei Condotti, 86, 00187 Roma RM, Italy Antico Caffè Greco is a historical café in Rome, opened in 1760. Its founder is the Greek Nicola della Maddalena. Over the centuries, the elegant Caffè Greco has been visited by Hans Christian Andersen, George Byron, Henrik Ibsen, John Keats, Mark Twain and others. Some 300 paintings, memorabilia and vintage photographs of famous clients adorn the walls of this establishment. And gilded mirrors and a piano help maintain an authentic atmosphere.

Caffè Al Bicerin, Turin

Location: Piazza della Consolata, 5, 10122 Torino TO, Italy The history of the establishment began in 1763, when Giuseppe Dentis opened his small shop in the premises opposite the entrance to the Santuario della Consolata Cathedral. In 1856, the current building was built here according to the design of the architect Carlo Promis. And then the cafe acquired a more elegant form, which we can appreciate today - its walls were decorated with wooden panels, mirrors and lamps. It now has round white marble tables, a counter, and shelves. This establishment was the birthplace of the famous Turin drink Bicerin - a mixture of coffee, chocolate, milk and syrup. Even Alexandre Dumas mentioned it in one of his novels.

El Fishawy, Cairo

Location: El-Gamaleya, El Gamaliya, Cairo Governorate, Egypt El Fishawy Café is hidden in the heart of Khan Al Khalili Souk. Its doors opened to visitors in 1773. The first owner of the establishment served Turkish coffee to his friends after sunset. There were more and more people wanting to enjoy a cup of aromatic drink and discuss city news. And then the owner bought buildings nearby, added even more items and hookah to the menu. The current owners of El Fishawy, heirs of the founder, are trying to preserve the traditions and atmosphere of the establishment.

Cafe Tortoni, Buenos Aires, 1858

Location: Av. de Mayo 825, C1084 Buenos Aires, Argentina Cafe Tortoni is considered the oldest in Argentina. It was opened by an emigrant from France in 1858 and named after the café of the same name in Paris. It is worth noting that the first premises of Cafe Tortoni were located on Avenida Rivadavia. The cafe moved to its current location in 1880. The owners have maintained the same style of the establishment throughout all the years of its existence. There is a tango room, as well as tables for playing billiards, dominoes and dice. His most famous guests were Garcia Lorca, Jorge Luis Borges, Carlos Gardel, Hillary Clinton, Albert Einstein, Robert Duvall.

Café Gerbeaud, Budapest

Location: Budapest, Vörösmarty tér 7-8, 1051 Hungary Café Gerbeaud is the most famous cafe in Europe, whose history began in 1858. Its founder is Henrik Kugler, a representative of the third generation of a dynasty of confectioners. He became the first to offer customers slices of his signature Coogler cake to-go in cardboard boxes. During a visit to Paris in 1882, Henrik Kugler met Emil Gerbaud - they soon became business partners. And later, a French confectioner entrepreneur bought the cafe completely. With the advent of Gerbeau, many changes took place in the confectionery - the menu expanded, the equipment changed, and the staff increased. Café Gerbeaud became a favorite place not only among city residents, but also among city guests, since the prices here were affordable for absolutely everyone. After Emile Gerbeau's death in 1919, his wife ran the confectionery. From 1950 to 1984 the cafe was nationalized and was called Vörösmarty. In 1995, Café Gerbeaud was bought by German entrepreneur Erwin Franz Müller. The establishment was renovated and restored to its historical appearance.

Gran Caffè Gambrinus, Naples, Italy

Location: Via Chiaia, 1/2, 80132 Napoli NA, Italy The legendary coffee shop is located in the center of Naples. The establishment was founded by Vincenzo Apuzzo in 1860 - his dream was to create the best cafe in Italy. The next owner was Mario Vacca in 1889. By that time, the premises were already in need of reconstruction. The owner of the cafe invited an architect and artists who worked on updating the interior. Their paintings and sculptures adorn Caffè Gambrinus to this day. The establishment was once visited by Matilda Serao, Ernest Hemingway, Oscar Wilde, Guy de Maupassant, Princess Sissi, and Emile Zola. By the way, the tradition of caffé sospeso was born here - paying for coffee for the next customer.

Cafe de la Paix, Paris

Where is it: 5 Pl. de l'Opéra, 75009 Paris, France Café de la Paix is located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, at the intersection of Boulevard des Capucines and Place de l'Opéra, in the building of the Le Grand Hotel. The hotel and cafe were opened in 1862 with the financial support of the Pereire brothers. The Café de la Paix gained its first international reputation in 1867, serving the International Exhibition. The establishment, located next to the Opera Garnier, attracted many famous personalities. Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Jules Massenet, the Prince of Wales and Edward VII visited here. In 1896, Eugene Piroux held film screenings at the Café de la Paix, and later a radio studio was organized there. Just like 150 years ago, today the restaurant is also very popular. Salads, hot dishes, snacks and desserts are served here.

Café du Monde, New Orleans

Cafe Landtmann, Vienna

Franz Landtmann dreamed of opening not just a coffee shop, but the most elegant place in Vienna. In the 1970s, Cafe Landtmann was threatened with closure, but thanks to the efforts of the new owners, it was saved.

Baratti & Milano, Turin

Location: Piazza Castello, 27, 10123 Torino TO, Italy Caffè Baratti & Milano is a historic café in Turin, opened in 1875 in the central Galleria Subalpina. The establishment owes its name to two pastry chefs from Canavese: Ferdinando Baratti and Edoardo Milano. Soon after its opening, Caffè Baratti & Milano became a meeting place for the intelligentsia and the bourgeoisie. Its success has grown to the level of "official supplier of the Royal House". The current appearance of the restaurant is the result of reconstruction in 1909. The room has a lot of marble, bronze, stucco, gilding and wide mirrors, which give this place a rich artistic appearance. The cafe was damaged during the Second World War, but was restored in 1948. Caffè Baratti & Milano offers its visitors more than 20 types of coffee drinks, tea, light snacks, pastries and sweets.

Cafe Central, Vienna

Cafe Sacher Wien, Vienna

By 1914, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy, and was bought by Auguste Boulet for his cafe. His heirs still manage the establishment to this day. Since then, Les Deux Magots has played an important role in the cultural life of the capital - writers, poets, artists and other intellectuals gathered here. Cafe de Flore, Paris

Location: 172 Bd Saint-Germain, 75006 Paris, France Cafe de Flore was opened in 1887 in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, on the corner of Boulevard Saint-Germain and Rue Saint-Benoît. The interior of the establishment, in the classic Art Deco style, has remained virtually unchanged since World War II. Since its opening, intellectual audiences have met here. Among the famous guests at Cafe de Flore were Robert Desnos, Pablo Picasso, Georges Bataille. By the way, Charles Maurras wrote his book Au signe de Flore while sitting on the first floor of the cafe. The restaurant's menu includes breakfasts, salads, cheeses, hot dishes, drinks and desserts.

Cafe Comercial, Madrid

Some of The Fatima Center’s followers are undoubtedly familiar with the prediction made by the Roman mystic and stigmatist, Antonio Ruffini, about when the Consecration of Russia will at last take place.

By way of background, Antonio Ruffini was born in Rome on December 8, 1907, the eldest of three sons in a devout Catholic family known for its attentiveness to the poor. His mother died when he was very young. Having only a primary-school education, he learned from an early age to pray with his heart rather than from prayer books. By his report, Our Lord and Our Lady appeared to him for the first time when he was 17 years old. He received the stigmata (open puncture-wounds on his hands and feet) on August 12, 1951, after a vision which took place at a remote fountain along the Via Appia between Rome and Terracina. (Pope Pius XII later authorized the construction of a chapel on the site.)

From that time on, Ruffini gave himself entirely to the physical and spiritual assistance of mankind, especially the poor and sick. Having entered the Third Order of St. Francis, he lived a life of eminent sanctity under a vow of obedience, displaying perfect humility in spite of his manifest spiritual gifts (including not only the stigmata, but also bilocation). A further endorsement of the authenticity of Ruffini’s charisms exists in that the noted miracle-worker Father Giuseppe Tomaselli published a biography of him.

Antonio Ruffini died at age 92, on a date no less remarkable than that of his birth. Born on the Feast of Our Ladyʼs miraculous Conception, he died on that of Our Lordʼs – March 25, 1999.

A Little Known Prophecy

Now as to his prophecy about the Consecration of Russia, Ruffini was asked in the early 1990s if Pope John Paul II would ever relent from his refusals and heed Our Lady’s request for that act. He answered: “No, it will not be John Paul II. Neither will it be his immediate successor, but the one after that. He is the one who will consecrate Russia.”[1]

In recent years, the meaning of Ruffini’s statement has become more uncertain with the questions surrounding Benedict’s apparent abdication of the papacy and Francis’ claim to it. Nevertheless, either the second legitimate successor to John Paul II is on the papal throne or he will be in the near future.[2]

Meanwhile, however, in the absence of Heaven’s decisive intervention (which can only be had through the proper Consecration of Russia), the Mystery of Iniquity is making great strides toward the complete destruction of Christian society. We must maintain hope and continue to apply ourselves to the reparatory devotions which Our Lady of Fatima called for, but we must not entertain illusions about how dire our situation now is. Great suffering, including martyrdom, may well be in our near future.

St. Jacinta’s Vision

In her Third Memoir, Sister Lucia recorded a vision which Jacinta had witnessed, which Fatima scholars have long understood to be a glimpse of the end-scenario described by Our Lady, in a world and Church tragically devastated by war, hunger, and persecution. In the end, as Our Lady promised, this dark time will yield to Her glorious Triumph. A light will break forth in the long-desired fulfillment of Our Lady’s request for the Consecration of Russia:

“At another time, we went to the cave called Lapa do Cabeço. As soon as we got there, we prostrated on the ground, saying the prayers the Angel had taught us. After some time, Jacinta stood up and called to me: ‘Can’t you see all those highways and roads and fields full of people, who are crying with hunger and have nothing to eat? And the Holy Father in a church praying before the Immaculate Heart of Mary? And so many people praying with him?’ [Some days later, Jacinta asked Lucia:] ‘Can I say that I saw the Holy Father and all those people?’ ‘No. Don’t you see that that’s part of the Secret? If you do, they’ll find out right away!’”[3]

Given Lucia’s response to her cousin, this vision clearly pertains to the Great Secret of Fatima. It certainly seems reasonable to presume that the event depicted here – presided over by the Holy Father, in a church, before a statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with many people in attendance – is the long-awaited proper Consecration of Russia. If so, it is likewise reasonable to presume the Consecration will take place in the midst of great famine, a frequent consequence of revolution and war.[4]

Let us continue to pray and sacrifice ourselves for this intention, that the Consecration of Russia be accomplished in time to mitigate the full force of imminent wars, famines, mass devastation, and loss of souls.

The catholic law thing is a bit confusing. The children have to be protestant but in order to confirm as a catholic you have to promise to raise your children catholic hahahah opps. At least I had to as part of my confirmation

So I’ve never been somebody who keeps their thoughts to themselves so I’m going to tell you the first thing that came to my mind- I swear this is true- when I got this message: prostitution laws. I know there doesn’t seem to be much of a connection but it’s where my mind went haha. The main reason I thought of that was because the actual core act itself is legal but it might as well be illegal because so much of what’s associated with it is illegal. Anyway, it is absolutely fine to marry a Catholic now and it has always been fine to marry someone from a non-Christian faith but most religions require or expect a commitment you’ll raise your child in the same faith so it might as well exclude you. Although there are examples in the UK of Catholics whose children have decided not to become Catholic and therefore are still in the line of succession. So for example The Earl of St Andrews married Sylvana Tomaselli (she interviewed me at Cambridge, no biggie) who is Catholic. Their two oldest children were confirmed in the Catholic faith i.e. they made a choice to be Catholic and so they’re excluded. Their daughter Lady Amelia Windsor- she’s often featured in the press as she’s a model- has never been confirmed so she is not considered a Catholic and is still in the line of succession.

Quoting the writings of Fr. Giuseppe Tomaselli (1902-1989), “I nostri morti – La casa di tutti”:

On February 3, 1944, an old lady died at almost 80 years of age. She was my mother. I had the opportunity to see her dead body in the cemetery chapel, before the burial. As a priest I thought: You, O woman, from what I can tell, have never gravely violated a single commandment of God! – And I reminisced about her life.

As a matter of fact, my mother always set a great example, and I owe my priestly vocation to her in great part. She went to Mass every day, even in old age, with the crown of children. She went to communion daily. She never missed the rosary. She was charitable to the point of even losing an eye while completing an act of profound charity towards a poor woman. She was always in uniformity with God’s will, even to the point of asking me while my deceased father was lying in state in the house: What can I say to Jesus in these moments to please him? – She repeated: Lord, may your will be done!

On her death bed she received the last sacraments with living faith. A few hours before dying, suffering so greatly, she was repeating: O Jesus, I wish you would decrease my sufferings. But I do not want to go against your will: your will be done!… – Thus that woman, who brought me into the world, died.

Basing myself on the concept of Divine Justice, and worrying little about the eulogies that acquaintances and even priests might have given about her, I intensified my prayer for her soul. I offered a great number of Holy Masses, many acts of charity, and wherever I preached, I exhorted the faithful to offer communions, prayers, and good works in suffrage for her.

God permitted my mother to appear to me. I studied the matter and I had brilliant theologians look closely at it also, and it was decided: It was a true apparition! –

My mother had been dead for two and a half years. And suddenly she appeared in my room under human appearances. She was very sad.

– You left me in Purgatory!…

– You have been in Purgatory until now?

– Yes and I am still here!… My soul is surrounded by darkness and I cannot see the Light, who is God!… I am at the threshold of Paradise, close to eternal bliss, and I long to enter there; but I cannot! I have said so many times: If my children knew of my terrible torments, ah!, how they would come to my aid!…

– Why didn’t you come earlier to tell me?

– It was not within my power to do so.

– You have not yet seen the Lord?

– As soon as I died I saw God, but not in all his splendor.

– What can we do to free you right away?

– I need one single Mass. God has permitted me to come and ask this of you.

Sotheby’s a anunţat că, în iunie, ne vedem în sălile de licitaţie. De la Londra, desigur. Nu riscaţi o carantină, la întoarcerea în ţară, licitaţi online. De fapt, cam tot comerţul de artă s-a mutat în mediul virtual. Pe ecran s-au văzut licitaţiile, acolo s-au făcut cumpărăturile din galerii, din saloane internaţionale sau din licitaţii.

Vikart, o nouă casă de licitaţii de artă în peisajul bucureştean, a avut prima licitaţie la 14 decembrie trecut, cu două săptămâni înainte să se dea alarma de COVID, o alarmă pe care am înţeles-o târziu şi greu. Atunci ne întrebam când vine următoarea şedinţă pentru că, plasarea la sfârşitul anului, înainte de vacanţa de Crăciun, Revelion şi iarnă, era riscantă fără anunţarea continuităţii, putând să se creadă, cel puţin, că a fost o licitaţie ocazională, fără „va urma”. Or, lansarea ce a precedat vânzarea anunţa o casă de licitaţii periodice şi ritmice. Şi niciodată nu s-a vorbit de altceva. Doar că a venit pandemia şi totul s-a închis. Decizia Vikart de a organiza o licitaţie online a venit normal, în acest context. Şi a avut loc chiar în dimineaţa zilei de 9 mai.

Oferta a fost una generoasă, exact 150 de loturi, unele de excepţie, la preţuri accesibile. Riscul întreprinderii venea din amestecul de creaţie contemporană, cu artişti „în viaţă”, cu oferta clasică, cu creatori „regretaţi”. Nu o dată am spus că paradoxul explicabil al pieţei româneşti face ca arta extrem de contemporană să fie mai scumpă decât oferta clasico-modernă, aruncând în aer ideea că tot ce e vechi e scump, cel puţin pe piaţa de profil.

Cel mai mare preţ, reuşit în a doua licitaţie Vikart, a fost de 8.750 de euro. A fost licitat pentru „Eva dans le jardin” – nu se spune Eve, în franceza jardinului? – de un artist mai puţin cunoscut, Florin Petrachi, dar acreditat cu o notorietate remarcabilă. Temă pentru acasă: dacă într-un interviu din 2012, declara că cel mai scump tablou al său vândut a costat 1.500 de euro, ce ar trebui să declare artistul acum, după ce a atins un nivel de aproape şase ori mai mare? Ar urma, ca nivel de preţ, un 7 mii de euro, primiţi, însă, nu de o pictură, ci de o sculptură, una dintre cele 15 oferite în licitaţie, adică fix 10% din totalul ofertei. Este „Maternitate”, sculptură de un tânăr şi foarte talentat artist, Virgil Scripcariu, în care pruncul este un precoce Sfânt Gheorghe, care îl gâdilă deja pe balaur cu un fel de suliţă, chit că se află într-un echilibru nesigur pe burta mamei.

Pictura ne aduce pe locul al treilea, cu un preţ de 6,5 mii de euro, obţinut de imaginea de copertă a licitaţiei, „Adoraţie” de Felix Aftene, lucrare recentă, aproape udă. Născut în prima zi a anului 1972, în oraşul cu o euforică notorietate, Vaslui, artistul s-a impus prin originalitatea propriei viziuni artistice. În aceeaşi licitaţie s-a mai dat, cu 900 de euro, şi un desen în tuşuri colorate de Felix Aftene.

Preţul tinerilor contemporani îl depăşeşte şi pe Baba, Corneliu Baba, din care am avut în licitaţie o lucrare inedită, incredibilă, un autoportret din 1934, vândut cu 6.250 de euro. Şi de Baba am mai avut o ofertă, un „Arlechin” din 1975, adjudecat cu 4.850 de euro. Cu 3.400 de euro s-a dat o altă sculptură, un „Dans” din bronz şi bazalt, de Lucian Smău.

Trei mii de euro s-au licitat pentru un peisaj din Piatra Neamţ de Aurel Băeşu, artist iubit în oraşul din pictură, mai ales de un grup de colecţionari pasionaţi care sigur au observat că se împlinesc, în această lună, 124 de ani de la naşterea pictorului, şi la anul, 125. Două sculpturi de Ion Iancuţ s-au dat, fiecare, cu câte 2.000 de euro. Este vorba de o scenă intensă, un inorog călărit într-o coborâre dureroasă, şi portretul, poate cel mai bun, al sculptorului Marcel Guguianu. Cu acelaşi preţ, două mii de euro, a fost adjudecată o pictură de Sorin Ilfoveanu, dar şi un pastel de Iser, reprezentând un arlechin. O acuarelă semnată Iser, reprezentând două turcoaice, a fost adjudecată cu o mie de euro.

La 1.800 de euro, fiecare, avem o pictură de Piliuţă şi o alta de Bunescu. Portretul lipsit de vedere al lui Brâncuşi, realizat de Manuell Mănăstireanu, studentul pictorului Dan Hatmanu, a primit 1.500 de euro. Cu semnătura profesorului Hatmanu au fost vândute mai multe lucrări, o interesantă viziune cu dandy şi Tour Eiffel, cu 1.500 de euro, foarte cunoscutul său joc de-a v-aţi ascunselea, acum cu 1.200 de euro, şi un desen în linie de pix, subţire, reprezentând Golia ieşeană, adjudecat cu 350 de euro. Dacă s-ar fi vândut, cu estimarea sa de cel puţin două mii, o compoziţie de spirit şi esenţă pariziană ar fi devenit cea mai scumpă pictură a regretatului pictor ieşean.

O pânză de Gheorghe Dican, artist contemporan de o puternică exprimare plastică, cu o cromatică intensă, a fost vândută cu 1.700 de euro. Mergând spre cote mai mici, ajungem la un Valeriu Gonceariuc de 1.300 de euro şi la alte două picturi de 1.200 de euro, fiecare, alături de cea foarte cunoscută a lui Dan Hatmanu, mai sus amintită: un peisaj portuar, de R. Iosif, şi „Arhitecturi veneţiene”, de Angela Tomaselli. Un alt contemporan al zilelor noastre, Mihai Sârbulescu, semnează o „Curte la Brebu”, dată cu 1.100 de euro, dar şi un Balcic, pentru care s-au obţinut 900.

Este evidentă selecţia realizată de colecţionari şi oameni avizaţi, dar ea a acoperit doar ceva sub jumătate din oferta Vikart, 69 de loturi vândute, din 150 oferite. La această licitaţie s-a văzut că există expertiză şi chiar ofertă, în acelaşi timp cu o mână de pasionaţi colecţionari, dar conjunctura economică nu va întârzia să creeze probleme mai mari decât cele existente.

O Sighişoară de Micaela Eleutheriade a fost luată de vreun avizat, cu o mie de euro, iar o „Femeie şezând”, de Gheorghe N. G. Vânătoru, cu 800. O alegorie ecvestră, în teracotă, de Miliţa Petraşcu, eleva lui Brâncuşi, a fost dată cu o mie de euro, iar un tors sublim de doamna sculpturii româneşti contemporane, Elena Surdu Stănescu, a fost adjudecat cu 950 de euro. Venim în prezentul zbuciumat, cu o lucrare inedită de Christian Paraschiv, o mănăstire cuminte, cu 900 de euro, cu un labirint suprarealist, de Petre Velicu, dat cu 800 de euro, şi o lucrare de Laurenţiu Dimişcă, cunoscutul român din topul mondial al Outsider Art, adjudecată cu 700 de euro.

White Cube

White Cube is a contemporary art gallery owned by Jay Jopling with two permanent branches in London: Mason's Yard in central London and Bermondsey in South East London as well as one in Victoria City, Hong Kong Island.  White Cube Bermondsey opened in October 2011 and is the largest of all the gallery's sites.  The 'South Galleries' provide the principal display area for White Cube's expanding programme of exhibitions and three smaller galleries, known collectively as the 'North Galleries', are used for an innovative series of shows. In addition, at the centre of the building, a top-lit, 81m² gallery entitled '9 x 9 x 9', is used for special projects or for the display of a single artwork or installation. Since its inception, the building has hosted a variety of important exhibitions such as the first UK showing of work by American artist Theaster Gates, a comprehensive retrospective of prints by Chuck Close and the largest presentation of Anselm Kiefer work's ever staged in London. To accompany these exhibitions, an education programme and an ongoing series of artists films, feature films and lectures takes place in the purpose-built 60 seat auditorium.  White Cube Mason’s Yard houses two galleries that provide a total of 1110m² (11,900 sq ft) of exhibition space, comprising of a ground floor gallery on street level and a double-height, naturally-lit basement gallery. Used for White Cube's expanding programme of exhibitions, White Cube Mason's Yard has hosted a wide range of exhibitions by international artists including Andreas Gursky, Georg Baselitz, Jeff Wall, Anselm Kiefer, Robert Irwin and Miroslaw Balka. The gallery opened with an inaugural exhibition by Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco.

The galleries artists include; Franz Ackermann, Etel Adnan, Darren Almond, Ellen Altfest, Michael Armitage, Miroslaw Balka, Georg Baselitz, Larry Bell, Chuck Close, Tracey Emin, Katharina Fritsch, Theaster Gates, Gilbert & George, Antony Gormley, Andreas Gursky, David Hammons, Mona Hatoum, He Xiangyu, Damien Hirst, Robert Irwin, Runa Islam, Sergej Jensen, Anselm Kiefer, Imi Knoebel, Rachel Kneebone, Elad Lassry, Liza Lou, Jac Leirner. Liu Wei, Ibrahim Mahama, Christian Marclay, Josiah McElheny, Julie Mehretu, Beatriz Milhazes, Harland Miller, Sarah Morris, Gabriel Orozco, Damián Ortega, Virginia Overton, Eddie Peake, Magnus Plessen, Jessica Rankin, Doris Salcedo, Raqib Shaw, Haim Steinbach, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Fred Tomaselli, Jeff Wall and Cerith Wyn Evans.

White Cube hold events throughout the year, which include; artist talks, previews, exhibitions, book launches, film screenings and performances.  They also have a channel which features videos of discussions and talks with professionals in the industry, all within different locations and categorised as such; In The Auditorium - one to one discussions about certain topics, In The Museum - installations, In The Gallery: Current - installations, Beyond The White Cube - outside artistic ventures, In The Studio - artist makings and processes in the studio and In The Gallery; Past - installations / exhibitions.  I haven't seen this type of channel before on a smaller gallery site (not public i.e - Tate), and this is an interesting addition to the gallery, as it gives context to the exhibitions and the world that the gallery is interested and involved in, it gives the viewers more knowledge and insight into this industry.  I think this is a good idea to get viewers more engaged with the artists, the processes, the exhibitions and the gallery as a company.  I think creating more interactive aspects such as interviews whether it be by video or writing could be a good way to get people more interested in our company as well as keeping viewers interested.  

When reading an article about the owner of White Cube, Jay Jopling, I found out more information about the owner and the gallery that has given me a better insight into how Jay became a successful business man, which inspires me to be a successful business woman.  I picked out key information for the article that inspired me.  

Jay Jopling, the founder of London's White Cube gallery empire, launched its third outpost in the capital to coincide with the Frieze art fair.  - I then researched Frieze Art Fair, which is an international contemporary art fair that takes place every October in London's Regent's Park.  The fair features more than 160 of the world’s leading galleries in which customers can view and buy art from over 1,000 present day leading artists, and experience the fair’s critically acclaimed Frieze Projects and Talks programmes.  It see’s thousands of the world's wealthiest collectors flock to London over the next three days.  This is interesting to know as this is something myself and Sam can aspire to become apart of, as well as attend to gain further insight into the gallery world and most importantly, our competitors.

The article went on to state that one London-based art collector said that some poorer galleries are currently "walking on eggshells" because of the financial downturn. Yet Jopling's mixture of charm, savvy and bullish behaviour will make him this week's most surefire victor. - interesting skills to know about, makes me think about how personality can affect how you succeed - mine and Sams personality combined I believe is strong, determined, friendly and charming - could get us far.  

"Jay told me a long time ago that if he couldn't be the best at what he does he wasn't interested," says White Cube's exhibitions director Tim Marlow. "The Bermondsey gallery is an affirmation of that. He wants a complex of galleries that will allow him to do the best shows with the best possible artists.” - long term goal for myself, I want to succeed in this industry, and as a determined person, I won’t give up easily - need to be strong in this industry and I think I have this personality / determination to go along with work experience that I will gain more of in the future.

Inside the White Cube: Ideologies of the Gallery Space, which emphasised that the blank walls of modern galleries had become "the archetypal image of 20th-century art". According to Melanie Gerlis, art market editor of The Art Newspaper, Jopling's "business-like" approach appealed to bankers with loose wallets "who wanted to put art on bare walls". "He's astute, he runs galleries like a business, not a cottage industry," she says. - Although I want to build a community and a space for all to enjoy, reading this makes me realise that I must not lose focus in terms of making money to keep the company afloat and to be able to do certain events and represent photographers.  Myself and Sam must keep focus on having a business approach that makes us successful so we are able to move the company in whatever direction we wish.

Art buyers put his success down to his polish. "He's very charming," notes collector Kenny Schacter. "He didn't get to where he is without being a very effective communicator.” - always improving my communication skills, and will continue to improve with working with people as well as interning in the future.  He also has a reputation for looking after his artists. "He's great, he's got good energy, and he works with creatives across different generations throughout the process," says the Serpentine Gallery's co-director Hans-Ulrich Obrist. "He does get a kick out of doing unusual things and doing them with absolute conviction," adds sculptor Antony Gormley, whom Jopling represents. "You know he wants to push what's possible, and understands an artist's interest in that, as well as being a very good businessman. That's a very rare combination”. - It is all about understanding the artist, having that strong relationship will push an exhibition to the right direction and as a result, succeed, I think this skill of nurturing will be improved when working at agencies as I will be nurturing artists then - I think that the two aspects of the company in regards to skills will benefit each other well.  

Website; http://whitecube.com - the homepage is simple and clean, reminding us of the physical space of the white cube, and therefore represents the gallery extremely well.  Myself and Sam must think about this, what design represents us as a company?  The homepage present the viewers with a piece of work that is currently being exhibited at the Bermondsey space.  The simply composed image on the white background gives a reflection of the work that is featured on the white wall in the Bermondsey space, which is extremely clever and again, makes me consider how myself and Sam can reflect our own space in time.

The information on the homepage next to the image includes the name of the exhibition, the artist, the date and the location, keeping the theme simple once more.  When clicking on the exhibitions page, the images displayed are on rotation, switching between the gallery locations and therefore exhibitions, which is a good way to attract viewers to the other exhibitions as they have no choice to see other images.  When clicking on an exhibition page, the images shown are views of the gallery as well as a few close ups on the physical work, which is rare as I have only recently seen digital images, rather than the whole room, giving you an overview to the exhibition, enticing viewers to go and see physically.  The way the images are taken of the gallery really works well with the design of the site, a clean image that is bright and simple.  

This again is something to consider, how the images work with the design - they need to compliment each other.  I also find the grey and black texts works well together on the site and with the information, as it gives a separation of information and an element of contemporary design.  The information included within the exhibitions are; artist, name of exhibition, dates, location, description of exhibition, format, number of images, why the format works with the images - what it portrays, narrative of the exhibition - structure, artist comments, in depth description of themes / groups of images, colour analysis and what the work suggests.  The images that represent single images in the exhibition also give details of the name, date, size and what it is printed on / how it is framed.  White Cube gallery gives an extensive description of the exhibition both with text and visually, and there are many elements in regards to what they include in their descriptions that I will take away with me - narrative structure of the exhibition, what it suggests, comments etc.  The way the images are taken is also something to consider when portraying an exhibition.  The news page keeps in design with a simple layout and text (grey / black), the page is neat, with only one news articles appearing at a time, as the viewer uses the scroll on the left hand side to read the articles.  I find this a really good way to display news updates as it gives a clean look that doe not overwhelm the viewers, letting them read the news at their own pace due to no pressure with other texts as they are not seen.  The news features updates on the gallerys’ ventures (i.e - participating at Venice Biennale), upcoming exhibitions and artists the are represented by the gallery in regards to prints.   The artist page again, is simple, with a list of artists in grey text.  The artists page is a similar layout the exhibitions, presenting the viewers with images of the prints (or other formats) placed within a gallery setting, with the relevant information that is previously stated with the exhibition images.  

The site is consistent not only with design, but the way the images are taken - work placed in galleries rather than just the digital prints showing, which attracts clients as they are able to see the work in a blank space and are therefore able to imagine the work within their own home, which is an extremely well thought out business tactic. Myself and Sam must consider how we present artists work in regards to exhibitions, as this could increase sales, much White Cube.  The information that features on the page includes; name, exhibitions, films, news, shop, their background, what the artist focuses on, how they stand out, theories that are relevant to them, examples of work - explained, timeline of their work and progress - in great detail, what the work does to the viewer, description of installations, biography and comments from a professional within the industry.  This again, has given me a better understanding of new things that myself and Sam can add to the website, how we can talk about our represented artists as well as artists that are exhibited, it also gives me an insight into what language is used when discussing work and artists, giving me a more formal and professional outlook.  The event page has a similar layout to the exhibitions / artist pages, simple and clear, giving viewers easy navigation.  

The text that is presented with an image that is chosen for the event features; small description, location, doors open, event commences, admission, reserve place, contact details and programme details.  This is a lot less information than other pages give, which seems less consistent, however I think this works with an event, as it gives an element of surprise.  Again, there are elements in the text that I have not considered when thinking about myself and Sams website, and these elements will be put forward when creating the website.  The about page gives the viewers information about the gallery itself in terms of the size, and details on the actual space, however it does not give any information about the company itself.  Again, for myself and Sam company, I think it is important for us to tell people our aims and values, as we want to create a community, and telling viewers this will open them up to us more and want to get involved.  The contact page features the location of the gallery, and the opening times as well as a contact number, all of whch are relevant, however I also think it is necessary to have an email for people to contact you that way as well, a telephone number I believe is limiting.  

Twitter; https://twitter.com/_WhiteCube - the twitter account for the gallery promotes the exhibitions that it has, and does this by featuring work from the exhibition as well as articles and quotes about / from the exhibitions.  The twitter is highly active and uses different materials to promote the exhibitor sheikh I think is highly clever and something that myself and Sam should think about when promoting exhibitions, as this is more unique and interesting, and appeals more the an audience.  The twitter also uses images and text to entice the viewers to read more, in which they are able to click on a link, and again this is an element myself and Sam should think about - the option for viewers to see more by using a link.

Instagram; http://instagram.com/whitecubeofficial - the instagram includes images of both the work separately as well as  featured within the gallery and the space itself.  The text that accompanies the images are large, the  content includes; the artist, name of the piece, a description of the piece of work and the exhibition dates.  I think myself and Sam will limit our text, as we want to be clear and concise, and focus the viewers attention on the image, not overwhelm them with text.  Although, this instagram has inspired me to include images of the work being displayed as well as the spaces we use - which could be interesting when doing pop-up events, this could make our instagram more unique.  

Again, this is further insight into more galleries, looking at the gallery, the businessman himself as well as how they portray themselves online, all of which is extremely important to know and understand for myself and Sams company, giving us further ideas and inspiration.
