Song of the day: August 8 2024
Through Glass by Stone Sour
About Stone Sour:
Stone Sour was an American rock band formed in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1992. The band performed for five years before disbanding in 1997. They reunited in 2000 and since 2015, the group has consisted of Corey Taylor (lead vocals, guitar), Josh Rand (guitar), Christian Martucci (guitar), Johny Chow (bass) and Roy Mayorga (drums). Longtime members Joel Ekman (drums, percussion) and Shawn Economaki (bass guitar) left the band in 2006 and 2011, respectively. Former lead guitarist Jim Root left in 2014. The band has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2020.

About Through Glass:
“Through Glass” is the second single on the album “Come What(ever) May” by American rock band Stone Sour. The track was published online through Yahoo! on July 22, 2006. The highest peaking of “Through Glass” was in the United States, on the US Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, at number one, followed by number two on the US Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks. “Through Glass” was certified Platinum in the United States by the RIAA.
The corresponding music video for “Through Glass” was directed by Tony Petrossian.
“Through Glass” has also integrated itself into pop culture and appeared in the 2012 horror film, Grave Encounters 2.
The song was inspired by frontman Corey Taylor’s frustrations towards the music industry and how he felt that there had been no musical revolution at all. He had been quoted saying:
"I remember exactly where I was. It was 2004 and I was on tour with Slipknot. I was sitting in a European hotel room watching a music video channel, seeing act after act after act of this insane, innocuous, plastic music. They were plastic, bubbly, gossamer-thin groups where it was really more about the clothes they wore and the length of their cheekbones than it was about the content of the song they were singing. It really made me mad. I was like, “Is this it? Have we just gone full circle? Did the singer/songwriter revolution never happen? Is it just the same drivel from the same replicate over and over again?” … “Through Glass” is really a very angry song. It’s me basically calling bullshit on pretty much everyone involved with the American Idol-type shows. It has its place, but when you’re basically cornering the market and making it very hard for anyone who actually writes their own music to get ahead, then it’s wrong and that’s really why I wrote this song."

We Are Not Your Kind).

During lockdown I have been listening to a lot of music and have been spending a lot of time on Instagram, so I decided to combine the two and make a series of band templates for Instagram story music challenges. This is the Stone Sour one. Enjoy!

Wednesday, November 7: Stone Sour, “Whiplash Pants”
Hydrograd was more of the same for Stone Sour, even with Christian Martucci replacing Jim Root; Josh Rand was always Corey Taylor’s main creative foil in his primary non-Slipknot outfit, so Root’s departure didn’t materially affect the band’s approach.  Unfortunately, “more of the same” for Stone Sour also meant that Hydrograd suffered from a lack of economy and clear direction, which resulted in good songs like “Whiplash Pants” getting lost in the shuffle and monotony.  The track itself wasn’t monotonous, playing like a swaggering banger that followed up on some of the more shuffling tunes on the House of Gold and Bones records, and Taylor sounded as committed as ever in his singing while Roy Mayorga’s drumming didn’t exactly stay in one place. “Whiplash Pants” stood out by virtue of being surrounded by numerous tracks that sounded mostly the same, but it was also hindered by the album’s lack of cohesion, even as it illustrated that Stone Sour wasn’t nearly as bland and tedious as perceived.

My top 10 underrated Stone Sour songs
These are some of my favourite SS songs that I think deserve some more recognition!
10. Thank God It’s Over
I think this is a really underrated song on Hydrograd and there are some really fun riffs going on through the song. I also like the solo that’s in a major key, which they don’t do a lot.
https://open.spotify.com/track/109QFCtkD4jR5JB3CPGXCz?si=vWiNPw6vTtqxiZQBU35ypA
9. Hell & Consequences
I know this song was performed live but I think it at least deserved a music video! I love the guitar in the chorus. One of my favourite songs on Come What(ever) May.
https://open.spotify.com/track/3Gua8OnQuwUWFVV53rqtiX?si=c_tePLegSYuX2aHNxmPdVA
8. Miracles
Underrated song off of Audio Secrecy, really beautiful song. They did do an acoustic version, so I guess it’s not so hidden in the album, but a wonderful tune none the less.
https://open.spotify.com/track/3hBmrBjusYiqlNjwYEXYrF?si=tbEWLHUdSGa0aARh3yrorw
7. Peckinpah
Off of House of Gold and Bones pt2, I really like it, it’s a really awesome song.
https://open.spotify.com/track/2FngpunDZn5SEjkEAbBaxB?si=LedL93y8Sm2Ysvp71DsXGQ
6. Imperfect
A gorgeous song that totally deserved to be a single. Corey’s live version was really nice too.
https://open.spotify.com/track/4pI5gzHk4tvfUueMY9UHd6?si=ZT0-DXLHQ-KL-Nhr6q4ntw
5. Hydrograd
I can’t believe they haven’t played this live yet, such a good song. Lyrics are great and being the title track, I wish they’d made more of a deal out of it.
https://open.spotify.com/track/3Qp4cWoZmfdjAx5dJFSHyS?si=dsLhRFdbTROegvByrh1Cig
4. The Witness Trees
Just the opening guitar line on this song gets you excited to hear the rest. Really cool song, sets the tone for Hydrograd I think.
https://open.spotify.com/track/78KKdGAVBVZmgj6rCaLayI?si=Wx9soyb2SBO_z-XZRfIDYg
3. The Uncanny Valley
Oh. My. God. What a song. The guitar brings this song up a few spots for me. The drumming, vocals and guitar all stand out and I think this is possibly the best song on House of Gold and Bones pt2.
https://open.spotify.com/track/5cMh0wkTZXKdlYFtGEny7n?si=UkD2s_pIQsyCg8YEL2MjVg
2. Pieces
One of my top songs on the standard version of Audio Secrecy. Awesome solo, but the vocals in the chorus make this song amazing for me. So underapreciated, really wish they’d performed it live.
https://open.spotify.com/track/1mnVvmjqO9TYvi2JRPvUq8?si=CeROLA8XSSG5uDpksCu91w
1. Anna
It’s really hard to choose between Anna and Pieces (as you can tell Audio Secrecy is pretty much my favourite Stone Sour album), but Anna is a hidden gem in their discography. The musicianship on here really shines through and the creative chord progressions make the song different to all their others. Personally, I think it should’ve made it onto the standard version of the album instead of being and extended track. The lyrics as well are really unique and add to the beauty of the song.
