word of advice to shondaland
maybe spend less of the budget on the theatrics of it all and INVEST IN GOOD WRITERS AND STORYTELLERS.
why people loved bridgerton in the first place is not because it's a "visual feast" but because of the romance, completeness, and complexities of the characters. it is famous as a means of escapism not for its adornments but its fresh portrayal of classical romances.
no one watches this for historical accuracy. i get the fantasy element that bridgerton exists as a world of its own. costumes, makeup, decorations, props are great but it is simply NOT ENOUGH to keep people on when the stories and the dialogue itself is lacking.

I've been reading so many people saying that the original show creator, Chris Van Dusen was infinitely better than Jess. And all I'll say is this.
1) Kanthony love story - triangle with sister! that lasted 6 of the 8 episodes. It dragged on and on and on.
2) Marina and Colin - season 1. Nearly did me in as a Polin fan
3) Marina and Colin - season 2. Geezus Colin, wtf? Let it go.
4) "Penelope Featherington? Are you mad? I would never court Penelope Featherington, not in your wildest fantasies." Ffs Colin. The fact that other than an apology exists, he was so much crueler in this scene than the book.
5) Eloise and Penelope blow out. I hated it!
So I don't know what his vision was for Polin, but he had some wild takes for the other storylines. I have my issues with the new show runner too (that's a whole other post).

@netflix, its officially June 13th (its 12:25am) and I don't see part 3!?!? Where tf is it??
I NEED PEN AND COLIN NOW.
idk if you can tell but I'm impatient. you said June 13th, well it's June 13 and I'm well prepared to pull an all nighter to binge this masterpiece of artwork you call a show. this is not simply a show anymore, it is a part of me. so if you do not release s3 p2 right freaking now, you are robbing me of my true self.
please Netflix please just gimme the proposal and more... of the carriage scenes between pen and colin.. I need the sweet and the spicy.

Accidentally wrote another casual essay. If you like thinking about what words mean, this might be of interest. Otherwise, feel free to ignore. It’s mostly just for me. It’s an analysis of a single phrase. And, ultimately, an appreciation of Chris Van Dusen and his team.
Ever since the Bridgerton S3 trailer dropped, I’ve been thinking on and off (currently on) about candles, so I can’t help but notice them in my rewatch. This time, I got stuck on a quote by Portia, which she says in 2x01 at the conservatory ball, “Darkness has been our candle in recent months.” First of all, I’m not taking this very seriously- we’re not meant to- this is a comical scene and she is faking grief in this moment. But I can’t help but try to figure out what this phrase means. I mean, I know what it means- like I said, she’s faking her grief- but how did we get there? Why does it mean that? D’ya know what I mean? Darkness has been our candle. I guess, given the context, I assume the message she’s trying to convey to the Finch’s is that there hasn’t been any light/ happiness in their lives. It’s just been dark/ sad.
But I had a thought- when you refer to something as your candle, you wouldn’t be talking about an unlit candle, right? Because what use is a candle if it’s not lit? The only time a candle is doing something is when it’s burning. So if you’re saying something is your candle, you’re talking about a lit candle. And a lit candle means light and happiness (and attraction in certain other circumstances 😉). So when you say “darkness has been our candle,” aren’t you implying that the darkness has been good?
Ok, so I think I actually really love this line. Because I’m no fan of the late Lord Featherington. He really only ever came across to me as a shit dad and a shit husband. The only time I had any appreciation for him was during 1x01 when he was neglectful enough to not notice or care what Penelope wore to the Vauxhall Ball, which allowed her to dress how she wanted (and everyone knows that was her best look of season 1). So I kinda feel like there could be a bit of intentionality in that phrasing such that the hidden meaning of what Portia is saying is that there was possibly a bit of relief in his absence? 😬 Maybe?
Or at least that the shroud of mourning has been a relief. This would actually make sense because it circles back to the fact that she was faking her grief. She was using it as a stalling tactic. So maybe possibly, the surface meaning is that basically they’ve been grieving, but the secondary meaning, the one meant for the audience, like an inside joke, is that the mourning period has been a blessing and the very thing keeping them afloat.
Am I on to something? If so, that is some pretty clever writing. This show is so surprisingly layered.
It’s also possible this whole analysis makes no sense. Did I just ramble for no reason? If so, I’m sorry. I probably shouldn’t tag this… but I’m going to, just in case anyone out there is as insane about this shit as I am.

Ya know how community fired the show runner, everything got worse, they got the original show runner back, but it never quite recovered? I FEAR that will happen with Bridgerton.
For those unaware, despite not being show runner, Chris Van Dusen WAS still a writer and producer for s3. Why he’s no longer show runner, when he is still there writing and producing, really baffles me. I have no idea, I haven’t heard whether it was a voluntary step down or forced. Either way; if Jess Brownell doesn’t find her feet in s4, and s3 continues to settle badly, then she probably won’t be show runner for s5 or s6—but she also would’ve probably tanked the chances of s6. S5 I’m really on the fence about if we’ll get. S3 has to settle well with people.
The main problem—to be clear—is having a change in show runner, with a clear and disjointed change in direction. The problem is unlikely Jess herself, I’m sure she’s good at what she does, but we changed authors half way through the book and it just doesn’t work.
It also may or may not make a difference that Jess Brownell barely writes the show. That is, to have a show runner who isn’t writing. She was executive story editor all s1, and wrote 02x04, 02x08 and 03x01; that is it.
Lastly, I have said for years that you can tell when a tv show has too many directors (bc that is painfully common) and you can once again with Bridgerton as well! Most have only directed two episodes, and all seasons have four different directors.
This isn’t the worst, and you might not notice, however let’s compare to the COHESION of qcabs; that had one director for the whole season and only two writers. You can tell when a tv show has too many moving parts that don’t fit together, or when it keeps it small and cohesive.
There are many bad examples of this in television, coming to mind right now for me is Hawaii Five-0. They had so many out of place moments I got whiplash. A good example is The Big Bang Theory (which I know is not a show that aged particularly well in many areas) but one director did over 200 episodes, and that is why it was still working in its twelfth season, when a lot of shows go truly barmy before then. You can see both the good and bad of this in glee. Yes all of glee is cooked, we all know that, but the first three seasons only had three writers and had some consistency, and then the last three seasons were a trainwreck—even by glee’s standards.
I want s4 to be better, and I know Jess is show runner again. I’m not praying for anyone’s downfall or firing. But also if these bitches could use a calendar just one time. That’s all I ask.

Bridgerton: A Diverse Fantasy or a Distorted Memory?
“Bridgerton” has captured the hearts and imaginations of viewers around the world with its sumptuous visuals, compelling storylines, and groundbreaking diverse casting. Created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes, this period drama has been lauded for showcasing Black, brown, and Asian actors in roles traditionally reserved for white actors in Regency-era settings. Part of me cannot get over how perfect of a concept it is to adapt RMB by having Penelope and Colin play the roles of Psyche and Eros (aka Cupid!) during their season and him falling in love with her whilst trying to find her a different husband, but at the same time how incomplete the execution feels because for two whole seasons the show pretty much ignored Colin serving the role of matchmaker for his siblings, an aspect of him that is incredibly important in the books.

The Queen Charlotte prequel is actually being written by Shonda Rhimes, unlike the Bridgerton series where she has no writing credit (on IMDb atleast).
I wonder how evident the difference in writers will be.
