katherinecenter Just got to have the chattiest, yummiest, most nourishing long dinner with @genpadalecki and @jaredpadalecki ! We talked books and parenting and life, and they were the absolute loveliest people to spend time with!
Gen and I met when she chose The Bodyguard for her book club. We did an IG Live together and I totally fell in love with her sweetness—and genuine, heartfelt love of reading. 📚💕
I texted this pic, without any caption, to my daughter—who is a true fan of Supernatural—and she freaked out in the most adorable way.
Thanks so much for a fantastic time, Gen and Jared—but thanks also for helping me give my little cutie such a fun thrill with this pic! 💖💖💖 Hugs from H-town!!
Such a busy social calendar! They look great!

Read in 2023:
When you’re not around, even for a little while, I feel like I have to go find you. I just feel this pull to be near you. I want to know what you’re thinking, and what you’re up to, and how you feel. I want to take you places and show you things. I want to memorize you—to learn you like a song. And that nightgown, and the way you get so cranky when I leave my stuff all over the place, and the way you tie your hair back in that crazy bun. You make me laugh every single day—and nobody makes me laugh. I feel like I’ve been lost all my life until now—and somehow with you I’m just … found.

The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center was genuinely the perfect book. I had an issue with her pacing in The Bodyguard, but all of those format problems were ironed out in this release. It was honestly perfect - perfect arguments, perfect romance beats, the emotions all hit SO GOOD.
anyway, a very good romance novel.

RECO OF THE WEEK!
Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center
Synopsis:
"A year after getting divorced, Helen Carpenter, thirty-two, lets her annoying, ten years younger brother talk her into signing up for a wilderness survival course. It's supposed to be a chance for her to pull herself together again, but when she discovers that her brother's even-more-annoying best friend is also coming on the trip, she can't imagine how it will be anything other than a disaster. Thus begins the strangest adventure of Helen's well-behaved life: three weeks in the remotest wilderness of a mountain range in Wyoming where she will survive mosquito infestations, a surprise summer blizzard, and a group of sorority girls.
Yet, despite everything, the vast wilderness has a way of making Helen's own little life seem bigger, too. And, somehow the people who annoy her the most start teaching her the very things she needs to learn. Like how to stand up for herself. And how being scared can make you brave. And how sometimes you just have to get really, really lost before you can even have a hope of being found."

The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
Hannah just lost her mom and got dumped by her boyfriend the night of the funeral. After an extremely long time off work, she is excited to be put on assignment, but it's one she's not looking forward to. Celebrity Jack Stapleton is coming back home to Texas to be with his mother, who is sick. Although he needs security, he doesn't want his family to know, and asks Hannah to pretend to be his girlfriend.
This book was cute and fun and felt like sunshine to read. That being said, there were some emotional or tense scenes, which evened out the happy sunshine vibe. Overall, this book was a joy to listen to and I loved the connection between the main characters.
Recommended for: romance fans, people interested in a book featuring a bodyguard lead, and fans of early 2000s rom-coms.
Content Warnings: parent illness/death, breakups, violence, suicide attempt, stalking

Book Review: The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center
With The Rom-Commers, Katherine Center has officially cemented herself as one of my must-read authors. Am I a sucker for romcoms about writers? Yes. Will I read hundreds upon hundreds of stories about writers falling in love while they're writing? Also yes. (What can I say? I'm predictable like that.)
Even so, there was something so endearing, amusing, and surprisingly moving about this story featuring two screenwriters - one, an amateur named Emma Wheeler who has put her dreams on hold for a decade to be her father's sole caretaker only to now land the writing opportunity of a lifetime with her idol; the other, a Hollywood legend named Charlie Yates who has won multiple literary awards but can't seem to write a good romcom because he doesn't believe in love, because he thinks it's nothing more than a senseless, distracting affectation.
All in all, this was a grumpy-sunshine, opposites attract, workplace DESSERT of a story. Not only were Emma and Charlie stuck together inside the same house for six weeks, but there was witty banter, line dancing, swimming pool antics, kisses for "research," and an adorable but food-resistant guinea pig called Cuthbert. On top of that, there was nuanced sensitivity paid to issues surrounding ailing health, devastating loss, and family, which I felt added significant weight to the story as well as to the characters.
This was so cute, so sweet! Funny in spades, too. It's definitely the sort of book that makes readers believe, with their whole hearts, that love stories matter. So three cheers to that!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for my review.
4/5 stars

The Bodyguard
By Katherine Center.
I wasn’t really planning on using this blog to review romantic novels, but here we are.
The Bodyguard was so cute! It was great, it was clean (except for some language) which is nice if you don’t want a lot of spice. I liked the cast of characters, and the plot was fun.
My favorite part, which is always the most important to me, was that the ending gave me closure, it was just what I think it needed. I totally recommend this book.

Last September I read the book ‘Happiness for Beginners’ by Katherine Center. I vaguely recall enjoying it (I get through so many books, it is kind of hard to remember them all unless I really love it). Anyway, they made it into a movie starring Ellie Kemper. It’s on Netflix and it’s BAD. The writing is stilted and clunky. The dialogue does not flow at all, it doesn’t sound remotely natural. The story didn’t really work like it did in the book either. It was just kind of a disaster.
One other thing I had a big problem with was the amount of wardrobe changes every character had. The characters are on a several week backpacking trip. A key thing with backpacking is one bringing the essentials to keep down on weight. There is no way they’d all bring so many clothes.
My recommendation… skip the movie. The book is a nice easy summer read.
