There's a scene in 'Exhuma' which is cool to see similarities between Asia cultures regarding supernatural curses / grudge.
Burying a deceased in a coffin where its standing rather than flat is to birth a curse within the family & outsider.
My understanding is, bury a coffin standing is to place a curse (because the dead is not laid to rest), however if the coffin is unearthed and broken.
The spirit is free, so the curse is reverted back to the person(s) until death is claimed by the evil spirit. (I think)
