I am so glad the new kdramas are bringing back the specific brand of loser men. You know which brand I'm talking about. The Ahn "min min" Minhyuk brand of loser men and I'm loving it. The "I worship this goddess and I'm so in love with her and I can't believe I get to love her. Oh my gods I love her so much" brand of loser men. And we're being fed so well with lovely runner, love next door, no gain no love, my demon, Cinderella at 2am, Hierarchy, Midnight Romance in Hagwon, doctor slump, Queen of tears, welcome to samdal-ri and even good partner (yes it's one sided but the dedication and yuri's couple too).
We need more fictional loser men who worship women to satiate our eldest independent daughter desires.

The way his eyes and whole demeanor changes when she said that without HIM the time stops and takes a deep breath because he knows she is confessing. This speaks how their bond is so strong that even when the audience is not sure what their conversation is about, they know and that is most important. There really aren't that many dramas that show how characters feel and pan out their relationship without explicitly saying everything and that's why Love next door can be a masterclass on how to show and not tell.

this loser choi seunghyo, really...
i just LOVE this portrayal of him not knowing what to do in front of her.
for 20 years it was a far-fetched dream. he almost gave up his feelings for her. he tried to cut off seokryu from his life. but he can’t. and he almost accept the fact that maybe he can never confess to her and buried his feelings forever, until he finally did. and she broke his heart for her rejection with a lie. and he tried again to cut off their friendship. before he was slammed with the fact that she was sick and he failed to be with her. to be by her side like how she always had been for him. and even after that honest talk by the beach, he still wait for her answer. because her reason to reject him wasn't valid anymore. he knew it was an excuse when she reject him the first time. so he waits again. left her a voice note, hoping so that she finds it. to let her know his feelings for her remain unchanged even after 20 years, even after the milk expired.
and she finally answered him. that yes. he left a big void in her life while he was gone. that her life without him is not the same. because she knew now. that he will be with her in every circumstances, he will fall to the rock bottom with her. he is her bestfriend. but, she sees it now. that he is no longer just a friend. they both crossed the line unconsciously at first, but surely now.
seokryu had a belated realisation that she likes him more than a friend. but for seunghyo who had always knew where his heart lies, where it will always go. he can't take another step forward. he will always froze whenever she moves closer to him. it has always been that way. he froze, he malfunction. because he knew that she likes him now. it is no longer an unrequited love.
i just love him. he is so adorable and endearing. ohh this is just a start. i will rant about him in more posts for each and every scene of him. this guy is a gem.

I'm glad the writers did not take the cheating plot forward. Cheating is too easy. It doesn't show the dynamics of a relationship that well. Here, the ex-fiance was there for Seokryu through one of her most difficult times. And yet he expected her to come out unscathed. To be the old Seokryu he fell in love with. And he wasn't able to handle the changes that was not unexpected of someone going through something as traumatic. He always just expected her to be strong.
I think this is going to be in contrast with how Seunghyo is going to treat her and HAS BEEN treating her. He loves her as she is and was and is going to be. He has loved her through all the changes. I think that's the hallmark of love that lasts long. He doesn't expect her to be strong. He expects her to lean on him. To ask for help. And I think that was a very good choice by the writers.

One of the many things that I love about Love Next Door is how none of the characters are villainised. Be it their exes or their parents. They all have some valid reason behind their actions and even though they hurt one another, they still keep on trying. That's because at the end of the day they love each other so they try to be better for them.

I don't think that we give enough credit to Choi Seung Hyo when it comes to reading Bae Seok Ryu's needs. For example, after the meeting with her ex coworker he walked behind her, because he knew she could handle herself and only needed to blow some steam. But, after her fight with the family, he took the active role and told Seok Ryu to follow him because it was too overwhelming for her and she needed active support.
