On Aventurine's Cooperative Eidolons

– an unprofessional dissection

✎𓂃 Namely E1 (Prisoner's Dilemma) and E6 (Stag Hunt Game). I don't doubt that this could just be pure coincidence, but this is Hoyo we're talking about. Properly capitalized work on my blog? More likely than you think. I am not eloquent enough for this. If you don't want to read all that, here's the TL;DR:

Prisoner's Dilemma has prisoners A and B who committed, say, arson together. They're interrogated separately (i.e., no communication between them), and there are four outcomes – if neither of them confess (both serve 0 years), if A confesses and B doesn't (and vice versa – whoever doesn't confess serves 20 years), and if they both confess (both serve 10 years). The best individual outcome for each side, then, is to snitch ("defect").

Stag Hunt Game has hunters C and D who must decide whether to hunt a rabbit or a stag with no knowledge of the other's decision. The stag will feed them for a week, and the rabbit will feed them for 2 days. To hunt the stag, they must work together. Otherwise, it could end in three ways: D goes for the stag (D will then starve) and C goes after the rabbit to feed themselves (and the other way around), or both C and D go for the rabbit and each respectively gain 2 days' worth of food. Both hunters are, therefore, more likely to cooperate to get the best outcome (the stag).

On Aventurine's Cooperative Eidolons

What catches my eye is how these two are sequenced. With the Prisoner's Dilemma at E1, and then through E2 to 5 until Stag Hunt Game appears in E6, it's more than just a representation of Aventurine's life up to this point. I wonder if this is a reflection of how his beliefs have changed, or if it's a reflection of what the individual departments of the IPC means to him, or if it's both.

As that Reddit post has already said, the PD applies to Aventurine and his owner. However, if we consider the game as between him and the IPC (or specifically the Marketing Development Department in this case), then the PD takes on a completely different meaning. When the Second Katica-Avgin Extinction Event took place, the Avgins were expecting the IPC to come to their aid, so they went ahead with the festivities on the day of Kakava. This was the worst possible outcome for the Avgins, and honestly I think I died a little inside when I came to this realization halfway through writing this. Sure, it's uncertain if the Avgins would've called off the festival were they aware of the IPC's plan, but I think that's just a bandaid on a broken bone.

The Avgin clan cooperated, and the IPC defected. The IPC acquired the optimal outcome – they effectively ensured the elimination of the Avgins and the Katicans from the politics in Sigonia – while the Avgin clan found themselves facing extinction. While there has been communication between the IPC and the Avgin, it's untrustworthy communication – basically equivalent to having no communication (the PD may still hold when there is communication, granted that it is ineffective; for explanations see here). Logically speaking, the Avgin clan should know this; the IPC did have an indirect hand in their banishment to the desert, which would then be reasonable to say that the IPC has no interest in resolving the enmity between Avgins and Katicans. The rational action here for the Avgins, then, would be to defect as well, but this isn't a world where every player is rational.

What all of this implies is that in such a situation, where a rational player in the Avgins' position would choose to defect, the Avgins in the story chose to bet on that non-existent chance of cooperation in a Prisoner's Dilemma. How desperate must they be to take that chance in cooperation, to wilfully ignore all the signs that point to defection by the IPC?

A Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) can become a Stag Hunt (SH) through eliminating the factors that contribute to the "every man for himself" sentiment in the PD. Suppose there is a scenario where the PD applies. What makes both sides equally wary of the other, and what prevents them from working together as they would've in a SH? Uncertainty. Incomplete information and trustworthiness – if you don't know what move the other side is going to make, you have to look for the best move for your situation.

In the real world, incomplete information is generally addressed by institutions. Information is made transparent by various institutions at various levels so that there is less guesswork for the players in the dilemma. It reminds me of the IPC Strategic Investment Department, since they are providing information for Aventurine to make decisions for his next move, and simultaneously trade information with the Marketing Development Department. It's less that they do it willingly, but because they're both departments under the IPC, there is a certain level of transparency between them.

Trustworthiness is essentially how one convinces others of their intentions. How else can anyone look at your past actions and determine that you're likely to cooperate if you have nothing vouching for you? Aventurine went from being a slave to a Stoneheart, and so with his current position and connections comes a certain degree of trustworthiness. Therefore, the IPC, too, have to honor deals made with him, as they have an image to maintain to everyone else in the cosmos – all because of Aventurine's position. It's a real shame that only now that the Marketing Development Department can't walk all over him again. A real shame.

By E6, Aventurine is playing the Stag Hunt Game, as opposed to the Prisoner's Dilemma. Is he collaborating with the Strategic Investment Department to achieve some mutual goal, where both will benefit? Hell, is he playing the Stag Hunt with the Astral Express, too? What is his desired outcome, then?

If we look at this in terms of how Aventurine's beliefs have changed, he's gone from a lone player to someone with a lot of cards. He's intentionally put himself in a position where cooperation becomes worthwhile, thus ensuring his interactions all fall under the "Stag Hunt" category. This doesn't mean that his life is free from betrayal, given how he seems to expect the dirtiest tactics in the execution of an interaction; rather, he expects that the outcome of any action would bring him a net benefit that offsets the price of being betrayed.

This means he's learned from the Second Katica-Avgin Extinction Event, where the defection of one player and the cooperation of the other resulted in the optimal outcome for the defector at the expense of the cooperator. I'd like to think he is where he is now because he wants to be well equipped to turn any future interactions that would land him in a PD into a SH; he sees the value in cooperation, the benefit of being able to play his cards with the expectation that his opponent would play into the outcome he wants because of a shared goal.

If we examine this as two distinct interactions with the IPC departments, we have the Prisoner's Dilemma and the Marketing Development Department on one hand, and the Stag Hunt and the Strategic Investment Department on the other. This interpretation brings up a very familiar notion: Aventurine and the Marketing Development Department are never going to get along. With the PD, there is no way both sides would cooperate, and so there we have it. Even if Aventurine doesn't know about the role that the Department played in Sigonia (as there is no canon confirmation as of yet), he isn't going to get along with them as someone of the Strategic Investment Department. True to the political climate within the IPC, there is barely any trust, nor any expectation to cooperate beyond what is absolutely necessary.

Aventurine's association with the Strategic Investment Department is a SH game in and of itself. Diamond gets a new Stoneheart, and Aventurine gets to live. I have no doubt that he manipulates every mission into a SH situation by revealing just enough of his cards; it's highly unlikely that he's able to achieve the Department's goals with no assistance.

as told by many of the managers, all of the members of TYPE ZERO, V&A, CRYSTALLIS, FABULA along with ACTORS and MODELS are all woken up at 3am in the morning with cameras recording everyone’s morning surprise. for some of the TYPE ZERO and V&A members, it’s not the first time they’ve experienced this situation and can possibly deduce what is going on.

with the help of the managers, everyone heads to their respective vans and buses as they are sent to the north chungcheong province. on the way there, the staff members inform the debuted artists that they are now filming a variety show series called ‘LGC RETREAT’, where all of them will be sent to a remote area to play games and have fun. but in the true variety show fashion, for every game that is played, there are also consequences as well…

OPENING / ARRIVAL OF THE DEBUTED ARTISTS

the order of the groups that arrive at the destination ( which happens to be an empty building ) are as follows: V&A ( they will be considered as one team for this show ) > FABULA > TYPE ZERO > CRYSTALLIS > LGC AGENCY. to give enough filming content and time, each group will get out of their van or bus ( the latter in the case of lgc agency ) one by one and give their best runway walk. by the end of the path, they will have to strike their best pose that would exemplify their group ( bonus points if it’s something comedic ).

for the groups that have done their best runway walk, they will be told to sit in their respective spots. as for LGC AGENCY, because there are a lot of actors and models, BAE RAEWON ( previously known as the pd for lgc boys adventures and the current pd for this show ) will tell them that some of the members will be split up. HAN JISOO, KIM JINYOUNG, LEE HANBYUL, LIM SANGHYUN, SEONG BYUNGHO, YANG AERI, YOON MINJAE will be the first to be assigned because all of them have been a part of LGC GIRLS SUMMER or LGC SPRING BOYS. for reference here are the teams that they will be assigned to:

for all of them, they will actually be asked to pull spoons from a container given by RAEWON and once everyone picks their spoon, they will show it to the camera and see what group they have been placed in.

afterwards RAEWON will notice that the group numbers are still imbalanced so the remaining MODELS and ACTORS will be playing a game of rock, paper, scissors and whoever loses will then be asked to pick a spoon from the container. in between all of this, RAEWON will ask some of the losers if there is a team that they would like to be in to see if luck will be in their favor. the lucky ( or unlucky ) lgc agency people who have been sent to the other teams are:

INTRODUCE YOURSELF ( ACTIVITY )

for this game, every group will be asked to think of a group introduction for themselves. the introduction must have some sort of catchy phrase/motto that they can say because it will be what they can say in the future games. once that is done, RAEWON will ask every single idol, actor, and model to give a short introduction of themselves to everyone else. for this introduction, they must state their name, how long they have been in legacy ( aka training period ), and three random facts about themselves. the ones with the catchiest introductions will most likely be featured in the show.

LUNCH TIME

as a way for everyone to get to know each other and energize themselves for the first game that they will be playing later, the legacy staff will be giving all of them homemade lunches made by NOVA, LGC GIRLS JAPAN, and the rest of LGC SPRING BOYS! during this time, the cameras will be filming all of them, but they will encourage the groups to interact.

SHOW YOUR FACE ( GAME )

after everyone is done eating and enjoying their lunches, they will be given colored shirts to wear and support their respective teams ( for the idol groups, it will be their group’s colors while for lgc agency it will be a navy blue shirt ). everyone will then be led to the auditorium where they will see RAEWON sitting at the center of the auditorium. he’ll explain to everyone the first game, which is called ‘SHOW YOUR FACE’.

in this game, everyone will be looking for the right camera ( note: there are several cameras and they will be moving around in different directions to trick everyone ) that will be taking a photo of a section of the auditorium. the goal is to be in the photo and fulfill the task assigned in the round. all of the people who fulfill the task and are in the photo will then receive points for their respective teams AND will be done with their round, so they will be asked to move to the side and watch the rest of the game until it is done. pushing, shoving, or any form of physical fighting is highly discouraged and will result in getting the team(s) eliminated. HOWEVER, they are allowed to cover another person’s face using their hands.

the game will end after THREE ROUNDS so whoever stays by the end of that will be given a punishment. if you want a visualization of this game, you can look over here to get a general idea ( the game is from 0:00-0:58 ).

TRUST ME ( GAME )

teams will be split into 2 groups of 5-6 members and the OLDEST member of each team will be the one scooping a certain amount of flour onto their plate that will then be passed down to the next member until it reaches the last member, who will then pour the flour onto a giant bucket. all of the members after the OLDEST member will be blindfolded, so it’s up to them to guess where the other person’s flour plate is located and be able to properly pour it to the other person’s plate. whoever has the most flour by the end of the two rounds will be deemed the winner!

DINNER & END OF THE NIGHT

while the the majority of the muses are having dinner, BAE RAEWON will call each of the team leaders separately to meet inside one of the empty rooms. he’ll inform the leaders that they will be playing the pirate barrel game, where each person will take turns inserting a toy sword inside a barrel. if the pirate inside the barrel pops up, whoever was the last person to put a sword inside will be deemed the loser and take whatever the room arrangements are. this will go on for four rounds, until the winner is finalized.

the rankings are (from first to last): V&A > TYPE ZERO > FABULA > CRYSTALLIS > LGC AGENCY

V&A: will be staying in a five star luxury inn and be receiving the best amenities available.

TYPE ZERO: will be staying in a two story modern apartment building.

FABULA: will be staying in a hanok ( traditional korean house ).

CRYSTALLIS: will be staying in a haunted high school nearby. rumors has it that during december, sounds from past students of the high school can be heard in the hallways.

LGC AGENCY: will be staying in tents arranged by the staff. the tents are located in the middle of the woods, so actors and models, beware!

once everyone is done with dinner, they will be sent to their new homes for the night. because of the budget and staff for this show, there will be multiple managers and staff members residing in each of the locations to supervise the teams ( and make sure they’re not doing anything scandalous or could get them into trouble ) and/or preparing for the next day’s schedule ( which will be revealed after the requirements for this have passed ).

The first day of shooting ends. The contestants get closer thanks to a fun work dinner, when Dara discovers why Min looked so familiar.

• chapter 12 – sunflower.

an. i’m finally back from and endless hiatus. ngl, it’s always hard to resume writing after so long. disclaimer! I have no idea how a real tarot reading works, but I wanted to included it as i found it fun. enjoy!

Her soft panting got gradually more and more present, no matter how hard she kept it in. “Are you okay?”. Jiwon couldn’t help but ask one more time. “It’s you who told me… to let out the true crazy”. “That! It’ll all be useless if you get hurt”. “B-but!—“, Dara cut off her rebuttal as her attention shifted somewhere else; Min and Hyuk suddenly appeared beside them, quickly gaining ground over the suffering duo. She glanced at the curly actor; her body tensed up inexplicably. She was sure she’d seen him before, but where? “Ugh— we HAVE to win!”, Dara whined, voicing Jiwon’s exact thoughts. “You got this! Keep a suitable pace for you, we’ll gain ground at the next section”. . “T-that’s crazy! Isn’t Sandara going at a faster pace?”, Sook widened her eyes at the incredible scene. “They seemed to comfort each other a lot, despite the unfavorable situation”. “Isn’t that what a power duo is supposed to do?”.

Jiwon held onto her tight. Just how badly did she want to win to do something so reckless? Her determination felt refreshing, nonetheless. A part of him started to respect her even more.

“The first teams to arrive to the finish line are: Team Min-Hyuk leading, Team EunDara second and Team Goeun-Jongwon last. The other teams are automatically out!”. The large race flag waved triumphantly at the side of the line just crossed by exhausted the contestants.

Jiwon carefully helped himself off of Sandara’s back and immediately pulled her into a celebratory hug, both taken over a rush of sudden excitement.

“We made it!”.

They jumped up and down, screaming victory before realizing how close they actually were to each other, suddenly pulling away from the embrace with some awkwardness.

“You’re way stronger than me”. The all smiley Jiwon didn’t even realize how proud he looked as he helped his partner fix her shirt. She kissed her flexed bicep. “I told you Hwangssabu-nim is the best! It’s all thanks to him”. “We would’ve been eliminated if it wasn’t for you. I told you to trust my judgement”.

[later that day]

“Don’t blame me, okay? This dinner was organized last minute… I just thought you wouldn’t care about joining, afterall… you hate work dinners. What makes this one different?”, Jiwon’s manager spoke up, heaving yet another sigh of frustration towards his own client as he carefully parked the car a few metres after the anonymous restaurant. “Nothing’s different“. The signature flowery scent hit his nose before her small figure could even enter his vision.

“Oh- Jiwon oppa, you came?”. Dara’s sulk lit up into a slight smile as soon as he entered. “Yes, Dohyun was kind enough to drive me here in a hurry”. The watery eyes, stiff posture; Dara clearly looked upset, it was impossible for him not to notice when he was looking at her so closely. “Are you okay?”, His voice suddenly softened. He realized he asked her that question so many times that day. She just nodded and led the new guests to the table where the lively dinner was already taking place

“I must be very late, am I not?”. Cho-PD’s face broke into a contented smile at the arrival of the precious contestant. “You’ve finally joined us!”.

“I thought I was the last one to arrive”, Jiwon pointed out after looking at the empty spots beside him and Dara. “Here we are, sorry”, the co-actors made their way towards their seats, but Jiwon wasn’t the only one who’s enthusiasm seemed to dim, Dara suddenly grew silent too.

“Now that everyone’s here, I wanted to grab this opportunity to thank you for coming to this dinner despite the late notice” - Cho-PD raised his glass - Let’s have a toast, to the success of this shooting!”. The crowded table followed closely, making glasses clink left and right.

“You still haven’t drank at all Sandara Noona!”. “I’m okay, thank you”. “Just one glass, come on noona!”, Hyuk insisted. Her nervous fingers moved the shot glass away from her. “I’m not really in the mood for it”, she refused again. Jiwon stole the soju shot, emptying it in one swift motion. “Ahh! I’ve been missing the taste of soju lately”. “B-but I poured it for noona..”, the actor protested in a low murmur.

“It’s been a pleasure to meet with you all and getting to know you more. I’ll be leaving first but we’ll meet tomorrow morning for the second part of the filming. Make sure to rest well as it will be a very physically demanding challenge, don’t go too crazy with the drinking” - He turned towards his right - “Okay Jiwon?”. A fat laughter broke at the table but Jiwon just smirked, unbothered.

The fun evening continued between delicious plates of braised meat and fried meatballs.

“Did you guys know that Jongwon-ssi knows how to do tarot readings?”. “I’m still learning, but I do am getting better at it”. The celebrity chef humbly responded to his show partner sudden boasting. “Wouldn’t it be fun to give it a try?”, Goeun encouraged him.

“Ask him if your bills are going to increase this year”. Dohyun playfully nudged at Jiwon. The liquor was already brightening his grim mood.

“Come on, let’s start from Jiwon-ssi!”. “A sunflower?”, Sechskies’ leader stared at the cards in front of him, failing to understand the link between them all. “… that’s unexpected”, Jongweon studied what he just revealed for a moment. “That’s the style of someone who only looks at one person. Soon, you’ll be dating”, he concluded.

“That’s nonsense, I have no luck there”. Jiwon scoffed. Even tarot cards seemed to make a fool out of his love misfortunes.

“Is there a candidate? Or someone you’re thinking about?”. “He has one, there is someone… “, the chef nodded. “I have someone?”, he tilted his head. “Someone near him”. Jiwon’s glance naturally turned towards Dara before hanging his head low. “Near me?! Yah! Who taught you how to read cards?”.

The work dinner naturally reached its end with people gradually leaving.

A chilly breeze awaited them outside, making Dara hold tightly onto the leather jacket she wore. “Jiwon oppa, before you go…”, she stopped by his manager’s large car, “Thank you for giving me your lunchbox earlier”. He desperately tried to escape her sweet gaze, “How did you?...” .

“You’re a kind-hearted guy afterall!”, her cheeks plumped up like peaches.

‘Jiwon, you got this, take a deep breath-‘

“It’s nothing”, a sincere smile won over his need of pretending to be cool. There was no point in denying it. “See you tomorrow then, we better win!”.

Dara quietly got to her car and in its safety the smile fleeted her expression, leaving space to bitter tears. She gripped the steering wheel so hard it hurt, before sinking her face there as the heavy emotions she tried to contain all evening got the best of her.

[earlier that evening]

Cho-PD checked his phone one more time to no news. “Jiwon’s manager still hasn’t replied. I knew I should’ve stopped them before they left! I think we should start without them at this point. Can someone call those two smoking outside?”. “I’ll go!”, Dara gladly volunteered. ‘I must’ve seen him in that show, that must be it!’, she finally put to rest that annoying doubt of hers, excited to share this with Min.

The two actors stood a few meters away from the entrance. She recognized them immediately despite them having their backs turned towards the restaurant; Min’s curls were way too recognizable to be mistaken.

“I’ve been curious about her ever since Hyung had to suddenly get out of that club that day. She made such a pitiful scene at that party after he dumped her. See…he used to date her back then”.

A painful flashback came to haunt her once again. Of course Min was at the infamous YG after party with that opportunistic actor. She finally understood why the sight of him made her restless.

“Hyung said it only took 3 glasses of beer to take her home, can you believe it? One can’t be so bad at drinking, she must be pretending only to cry victim after she realizes how easy she’s been”, he chuckled after taking another hit.

“Let’s offer her some, see if what Hyung said is true”, Hyuk threw the cigarette butt on the sidewalk before stomping it off.

Dara quietly backed away from the entrance door but her feet wouldn’t take one more step, no matter how much she wanted to flee from that nightmare turned reality. The illusion of the two admiring dongsaengs happily approaching her just vanished into the disgusting truth. Perhaps that’s what the rest of the industry thought of her behind the smile and pleasantries.

Due South Re-watch: episode 1

Part 2

•We meet Elaine and she immediately has a thing for our boy scout Mountie. Apparently any women who meets Fraser has a thing for him. Oh Benny, you poor, sweet, snowy child, this will happen a lot.

•Our bad guy of the week is Caroline Morgan, played by Christina Cox, who was in an episode of House M.D with John Cho and in iZombie who played Ravi's previous boss who fired him from the CDC before he became a medical examiner. That was kind of fun to realise.

•Fraser is good with everyone, including kids. He recognises hard work and rewards it. It's a good way to get Willie to trust him, and to me this feels like something his grandparents did for him when he was that age.

•I put in my notes that 'Dief is an adorable, fluffy boy', which is true, but I don't remember why I wrote it. I think he just appeared on screen and I felt the need to write it.

•Fraser's brown uniform does not get enough love, I like it and I missed it in later seasons when they ended up using the red one more.

•The bank manager messed up! In his previous statement he said the robbers were all male, but when questioned again said that one was female. Dude, you are a dumbass.

•Chase scenes in this show are pretty good, this one is fairly ridiculous with the horse and carriage, but it's believable because of how naturally over the top Fraser is. The choice in music also sells it too.

•And we continue the running joke of Fraser remembering advice his father gave him.

•Best friends finish each other's sentences.

•Isn't everything Fraser does for the Chicago PD technically unofficial but they let him do it anyway because it means more crimes are solved? When these cases go to trial, if a plea of not guilty is entered, does Fraser have to give testimony to it? Is his involvement explained to the DA's office and they're okay with it? Like what actually happens? Because he will be in the police report, he has to be for the case to make sense when it goes to trial.

•The fight scene with the robbers is well done and uses the surroundings pretty well too. That's something that can be said for a lot of these scenes in the show.

•Again, we know Fraser is good with guns, he just isn't allowed to legally carry one. Ray might have been trying to hype him up to scare Caroline but in fact everything he said was true. That being said, you shouldn't piss off a person holding a gun to your best friend's head.

•She shot him in the hat. He just laid there, amongst the boxes like he had actually been shot.

•Fraser was oblivious to Ray begging for his life. Generally, if your friend is doing that, you should believe them and take it seriously, especially if you can see that there is a real threat.

•Okay, so you know when people were doing that thing where they were describing the sluttiest thing a man can do... Fraser in his brown uniform, jacket off, suspenders and sleeves rolled up. I dare you to tell me I'm wrong. Him running away from Elaine is adorable, like a deer (or moose) in headlights.

•Willie is a good kid, he came back so Ray could keep his job and Fraser wants the best for him so provides him with a job and pays him, which acts as incentive to get him to stay in school, and gives him a safe place to go if he needs it.

Final thoughts: It's a fun opening episode to the full series. You get the see the new sets, the Mountie uniform is correct, meet recurring characters and any cast changes isn't off putting. Ray and Fraser's friendship is in full effect now though we don't know how much time has passed since the pilot. The crime itself is pretty simple and well thought out which helps ease us into the show and allows character introductions and development to stand out more.
