Man of Steel Review
I'll start by saying I'm a huge Superman fan, not as intense as some, but I've had my moments... I took my dad to see this movie on Fathers Day, we wore Jor-El and Kal-El t-shirts... That said, "Man of Steel" was exactly what it needed to be. Did it have its flaws? Sure. Was it perfect? No. Were there things that could have played out better? Of course. Yet everything that was "wrong" in this movie can be built upon and made right in future installments. This is about the movie we have in front of us, not the one we wish it was, or some comparison to the Superman films of the 1970's and 80's. Remember when we thought we wanted that Superman back? We got "Superman Returns", and that definitely wasn't a perfect movie by any stretch. Great effects, great use of powers, etc, but no real story, and the villain was recycled/cloned from the Richard Donner films. Because of "Superman Returns", "Man of Steel" had to be something completely different, something engaging, full of action. As I sat in the theater I didn't want to take my eyes off of the screen for fear I'd miss something. That's a Superman movie, I definitely wasn't bored. While it wasn't what I expected, MoS was full of surprises. As someone who has probably read and seen every Superman origin story, I loved what they did here. It was an amalgam of everything I liked about each story whether it was John Byrne's "Man of Steel", Mark Waid's "Birthright, or Geoff Johns "Secret Origin".This was an origin story that broke the mold of origin stories, it did for DC what Iron Man did for Marvel, what Batman Begins did for the Dark Knight. Remember, it's a post "Smallville" world, that show defined Clark Kent for a generation so here, in "Man of Steel" we had to get some of that, but not too much, because its all been done, and done decently, for 10 years on television. "Man of Steel" gives us a re-imagined Krypton, which I enjoyed, especially the Jor-El/Lara relationship and the Zod/Jor-El dynamic which was right out of Johns' "Last Son" arc. I thought the way the government reacted to Superman's appearance was definitely a grounding element because if a "god" truly walked among us, we'd be a little suspicious at first. Aliens descend on our planet, we'd be on the defensive. All of these things were great elements in this origin. Spoilers... This is the "Begins" of Superman. I've read some reviews and tweets where people think that there was no loving, moral father figure in Jonathan Kent, but there was. The Jonathan Kent that fiercely loved and protected his son, the Pa Kent that wanted his son to be ready when he exposed his true origins to the world. This is a Jonathan Kent who wanted his son to know who he was, where he comes from, the importance of hard choices. That's the Pa Kent we have in this film. Obviously Clark wasn't ready to become Superman until he learned of his Kryptonian origins, that makes Pa Kent a success. He knew what his son could become and wanted him to be at his best when the time came. Martha Kent served as Clark's tether to his humanity, his soul and conscience, which Lois Lane also becomes. I've also read and heard people say that Superman didn't try to get the fight with Zod out of Metropolis... does no one remember them flying around and fighting through a mountainous region, or flying into space and hitting a Wayne satellite? Zod obviously wanted the fight in the city, so that's where they ended up every time. It seems like some folks just saw what they felt like seeing. In a movie like this you're not going to have everything explained to you, you're not going to be told what the characters are thinking at every turn, you have to understand there motivations from what you're given, especially when action draws you in and you almost forgot what a character said. There's been a lot said about how the movie raises a lot of questions, but doesn't give any answers... I think that's the point. 1) they want the audience to think, 2) they're leaving it all open for the eventual sequels. As for the controversial ending... Zod was clearly not going to stop killing, he said this, he said he was bred to protect Krypton and with that gone (all his people drawn into the phantom zone, the genesis chamber destroyed) he has nothing, so he was going to make sure Kal had nothing, and he had already threatened Ma Kent. Even while he said that he wouldn't stop, Zod took off the Kryptonian armor, his only true advantage in the fight, he clearly wanted Kal to end him and was doing everything in his power to make that happen. Were there other options? Not in this movie. No kryptonite, no way to disable or imprison Zod, the machines that would have depowered Zod in a Krypton like atmosphere already destroyed, the phantom zone already closed. What Superman did was the only option in front of him, the one Zod pushed him to. This may be a Nolan-esque, dark, gritty, "what if it really happened" origin for Superman, but its still very much the Superman I wanted, loads better than "Returns". Sure, there could have been more moments of wonder with him miraculously saving people while he fought the main villains, he clearly cares for humanity, why else would he choose Earth over Krypton, so I'll pretend those happened off screen, or in the deleted scenes. With what happens in this movie, Superman basically destroys the hope of a future Kryptonian civilization, just think how this Superman will react when he comes to another life or death situation, meets Supergirl, fights the Kryptoinan weapon Doomsday, finds out the government cloned him and created Bizarro or Superboy, discovers Brainiac and Kandor. Those will be some great stories and character moments to follow this up with. As a Superman fan, the defining moment of what made this movie great wasn't in the movie itself, it came after. My sister, who always sort of rolled her eyes when ever I said I was going to watch something Superman, texts me and says not that she liked "Man of Steel", but "Superman was awesome". And that is what all fans of the Man of Tomorrow should want, for our hero to be in future movies.
