"Friends,
It’s tempting to view the strike underway by Hollywood writers and actors against the studios as a war between wealthy Hollywood elites.
But that’s not at all the case. In fact, what’s happening now in Hollywood is a microcosm of what’s happening across America in the emerging digital economy — which is rapidly replacing the production of things with the production of digitized ideas.
The workers in this emerging economy are some of the worst paid and worst treated anywhere, while the top owners and managers are among the fattest cats outside Wall Street.
The biggest fights between capital and labor in the 21st century may look different from the struggles of the 20th century — which centered on whether, for example, full-time workers got better hourly pay and benefits, time-and-a-half for overtime, and reasonable working conditions — but they are in many ways the same, if not worse.
They don’t involve physical property. They are over digitized creative output. More specifically, how much of the value of what’s created goes to those who do the creating versus to those who manage those creations?
The entertainment corporations say they’re suffering because people are going to the movies less and cutting their TV cables to watch streaming videos.
But follow the money: Your entertainment dollars are actually going to the biggest corporations in America. These giants have gained huge bargaining power because they own the ways content is distributed and are mining consumer data to give them even more power and higher profits.
Consider: Stock gains this year have been concentrated among five giant digital firms: Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta. Their combined market capitalization is now over $8 trillion, a figure that exceeds the GDP of every country but the United States and China. They are cash rich. All but Amazon have a combined $200 billion net cash-to-debt balance.
As these giant corporations take over streaming video, video games, and media platforms, their top executives, largest contractors, and biggest investors are raking it in.
Netflix’s Reed Hastings got a 2022 compensation package worth $51.1 million, up 25 percent from the year before. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO got $39 million. Comcast’s CEO, $32 million. Paramount’s CEO, $32 million. Disney’s CEO, $24 million.
Amazon’s Bezos and Meta’s Zuckerberg are raking in more than all these executives combined.
Meanwhile, the people who create the content are getting shafted. They have less and less bargaining power.
I’m talking about writers, designers, artists, musicians, software designers and developers, photographers, graphics specialists, coders, sound engineers, animators, singers, songwriters, architects, showrunners, journalists, and everyone who stores or delivers these creations.
And it’s just beginning. Artificial intelligence — right now, mostly via Google, Meta, and OpenAI — is busy scraping up every morsel of digital content on the internet. If you’re not Big Tech, your intellectual property is disappearing.
Over the last decade, the pay of TV writers has fallen by 23 percent. The typical actor has also been on a downward escalator (last year, averaging $26,276). So have the pay, benefits, and job security of most other content creators.
In other words, what’s happening in Hollywood is also happening in a huge and growing portion of the U.S. economy.
This gap between the declining rewards going to digital creators and the soaring rewards going to the executives of the giant corporations that manage digital creations has become a chasm, and it’s becoming ever larger.
The biggest variable in all this is the law — in particular, what limits it places on digital monopolies, and whether it facilitates or limits the power of creators.
In both these respects, the Biden administration has been terrific. It has been more aggressive against monopolists and in favor of unions than any administration since that of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
But much of the law is still in the 20th century, and the federal courts have tended to be on the side of the corporate giants.
Just look at the union busting Amazon has been able to get away with. Or how easily Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have been lifting copyrighted material from the internet.
Meanwhile, the courts are reluctant to use antitrust to inhibit the giants. Last week a federal judge rejected the FTC’s attempt to stop Microsoft’s $70 billion acquisition of the video game maker Activision Blizzard, saying the agency failed to prove the deal would reduce competition and harm consumers. This followed the FTC’s loss in February, when a judge rejected its attempt to block Meta from buying the virtual reality startup Within.
As Hollywood’s content creators go on strike, and as the FTC goes after Microsoft and Meta, bear in mind this huge and growing imbalance of power. If unchecked, it will soon comprise much of the American economy.
What are your thoughts?" Robert Reich

Ebay 3PL
https://www.efdcargo.com/ecommerce-3pl-by-e-commerce-platforms/ebay-3pl/
Ebay currently does not provide its own logistics services. Sellers must select, package and ship orders themselves, or find an independent supplier to do this for them. For enterprises selling through other channels, this may not be a problem. All they have to do is add eBay orders to the existing system. For sellers without this ability, Ebay must start from scratch or find a 3pl cooperation.
Detailed Guide: Shipping from China to Ebay FBA
Shipping From China to FBA USA: Step-by-Step
Step1: Choose Direct or Indirect Shipping to Amazon.
Step2: Decide on the Shipping Mode.

Does Ebay Have Something Similar to FBA?
EBay managed delivery works similarly to Amazon FBA and Delivery. It will provide sellers with storage, packaging, and delivery functions to speed up delivery time and reduce delivery costs.
Is It Cheaper to Sell on Ebay or Shopify?
Shopify's cheapest plan starts at $29 per month. When paying with non-Shopify, the credit card transaction fee is 2.9% + $0.30. When paying with Shopify, there is no charge... EBay does not charge monthly fees, although they charge so-called insertion fees and final value fees.

I mean, she was so whiny. I question my own ability to judge a performance. In most categories, the winner was usually the one I thought was the worst option. What about James Read (Clyde), Paul Telfer (Xander), Bryan Dattilo (Lucas), Robert Scott Wilson (Ben), Daniel Kerr (Eli) and Lindsay Arnold (Allie) ?? The Art of Amazon Infographics
We are visual shoppers, which means Amazon (Amazon Photography China) sellers need to describe their product WHILE catching the eye.
Listing images are powerful tools in attracting potential customers, but it is the art of infographics that will ultimately help you secure buyer purchases. 65% of people are visually inclined learners, and most notably in this bustling life, they will not have the time nor patience to read the information in great textual detail. The web previously proved a dreary place to digest information, which is why the arrival of infographics has made such a turn out ever since 2012.
Infographics use a visual representation of data with skillfully condensed information in a neat package. This encourages Amazon shoppers to absorb information fast and make a quick but well-informed decision. In short, information now is visual, condensed, and most of all – easier to grasp. You can take a variety of infographic angles in your Amazon listing Images; Feature, Zoom-In, Dimensions, Package Includes, and Icon Infographics. But like any beautiful creation, infographics require knowledge and a certain flair of art to attract your audience masterfully.

ULRIKE OTTINGER
Mercredi 21 octobre à 19h (heure de Paris)
Wednesday October 21, 7pm (Paris time)
We hope you and your loved ones are well and safe. This seminar will take place online via Zoom The number of attendees is limited, please register at this address if you wish to attend: [email protected]
[EN] Ulrike Ottinger was born in Konstanz in 1942. She lived in Paris from 1962 to 1969 as a painter and photographer, where she also wrote her first film script Die mongolische Doppelschublade. Graphic works originated at the Atelier Friedländer. She returned to Germany in 1969, where she founded the filmclub Visuell in cooperation with the Universität Konstanz and the galeriepress (in which she presented Wolf Vostell, Allan Kaprow, R. B. Kitaj, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney).
Her first film, Laocoon and Sons, made in collaboration with Tabea Blumenschein, was recorded in 1971-1973. In 1973 she moved to Berlin and filmed the Happening-documentary Berlinfever – Wolf Vostell. It was followed by The Enchantment of the Blue Sailors in 1975 with Valeska Gert, and by Madame X – An Absolute Ruler in 1977, which was an international success. Work on the Berlin Trilogy, Ticket of No Return, (Bildniseiner Trinkerin,1979), Freak Orlando (1981) and Dorian Grey in the YellowPress (Dorian Grey im Spiegel der Boulevardpresse, 1984) began in 1979. She was able to win Delphine Seyrig, Magdalena Montezuma, Veruschka von Lehndorff, Eddie Constantine and Kurt Raab, as well as the composer Peer Raben for these works, which were filmed in industrial wastelands and alienated urban landscapes.
The collaboration between Delphine Seyrig and Ulrike Ottinger was part of the exhibition Defiant Muses (curators : Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez & Giovanna Zapperi) at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid
In addition to fictional films, Ulrike Ottinger also devoted herself to documentary film. Intensive and comprehensive research characterizes all her films from China. The Arts – The People (China. Die Künste – Der Alltag, 1985) to Exile Shanghai (1997), from Southeast Passage (2002, exhibited at Okwui Enwezor’s Documenta 11) to Prater (2007), from The Korean Wedding Chest, to Under Snow filmed in the Japanese Snow Country Echigo. For her film Chamisso’s Shadow (2016) Ulrike Ottinger travelled for three months along the Bering Sea, tracing the paths taken by the great 18th and 19th C explorers. This is her longest documentary to date (12 hours); the accompanying exhibition took place in the National Library in Berlin.
Ottinger's most recent film, Paris Calligrammes, premiered in the spring of 2020 and in Paris on October 6. Both her films and her photographic work have been shown in numerous retrospectives and exhibitions, including at the Venice Biennale (1980), at the Cinémathèque française, Paris (1980, 1982), at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2000, 2004), as well as the Centre Pompidou, the Sammlung Goetz. Her Hannah-Höch-Award 2011 was accompanied by a retrospective including her paintings at the nbk,Berlin (2011 12) and her worldimages were shown at the kestnergesellschaft in Hannover (2013).
In Paris, the Eric Mouchet Gallery is currently presenting an exhibition: Ulrike Ottinger, Go Always Return.

“In 1946, the Seattle Times described the visit of a young Chinese-American filmmaker: ‘Still in her teens, and with no background of such a venture, Esther went to Hollywood, rented a studio in Sunset Boulevard and made her first picture for Chinese markets here and in China.’ This may be somewhat of an exaggeration because Esther would have been in her early 20s, but her youth was still remarkable. Once called China’s first woman director by both the Chinese and American press, Esther Eng had been forgotten for twenty-five years after her death when, in the summer of 1995, Todd McCarthy, then chief film critic for Variety, came across her name in the credits of Golden Gate Girl (1941). It was a Chinese film Eng had directed in San Francisco. McCarthy provocatively claimed in the August 21-27 issue of Variety that Eng was ‘an Asian woman filmmaker who had utterly eluded the radar of the most diligent feminist historians and sinophiles.’” This statement inspired veteran film critic Law Kar to research and write on Eng’s life and work, and he concludes that ‘[i]f Eng had worked in the film industry today, she could have easily been seen as a champion of transnational filmmaking, feminist filmmaking, or antiwar filmmaking.’
“Esther Eng was a female filmmaker who worked as a director, a writer, a producer and a distributor. In her creative and business endeavors, she was a woman pioneer who crossed the boundaries of race, language, culture and gender. As a young San Francisco-born teenager, Esther Eng learned about film by watching hundreds of them in the local theater. She grew up in a period where public attitude toward China was improving due partly to Pearl S. Buck’s positive portrayal of Chinese peasants in her 1930 bestselling novel The Good Earth, while Chinese-Americans unfortunately still lived under The Chinese Exclusion Act.
“...It’s a Women’s World (a.k.a. 36 Amazons), also co-written by Eng, was advertised as the first Hong Kong produced film to feature an all-female cast of 36 actresses. The ambitious project follows its 36 female characters all of whom occupy different social positions to highlight the harsh reality of living as a woman in a modern society. In retrospect, Esther Eng’s Hong Kong filmmaking career is incredible for how script writers, film companies, top stars, and the local press alike seemed to accept the inexperienced young woman as their director and, at times, producer. Press reports often mention Eng’s assuring openness and amicability as well as a sense that her early associations with Hollywood gave her an advantage over unknown local directors. There is another aspect of Eng that most likely contributed to the positive attention she received: her gender presentation. Eng dressed in men’s attire and was quite open about her several lesbian relationships. The latter was especially closely followed and reported on by the Hong Kong media. Sophisticated magazine editors often referred to her romantic interests as her ‘bosom friend’ and ‘good sister.’ Perhaps because all-female opera troupes with male-impersonating actresses were quite popular in the 1930s, Eng’s appearance and relationships did not cause much controversy. This did not mean there were no sensationalist reports on the matter. In 1938, Lei Qun, a young Sing Tao Daily News reporter expressed his astonishment towards everything about Eng, calling her ‘living proof of the possibility of same-sex love,’ remarking that, ‘It’s not just work, address, manner, and dress…it’s her sensibility that was completely that of a man.’
“By October of 1939, the war’s progress prompted Eng to return to the U.S., but wartime Hong Kong remained on her mind. She spent several months in Hollywood learning about the new developments in the motion picture business before directing Golden Gate Girl (1941). The film is an immigrant saga situated against the backdrop of The Rice Bowl Movement, an overseas Chinese community effort to raise funds for China’s war with Japan. This film makes use of documentary footage taken by Grandview Film Company director Joseph Sunn and also gave Bruce Lee his screen debut as a baby girl. After the war, Esther Eng decided to set up her Chinese language filmmaking operations in the U.S., and in January of 1947 the Singtao Evening News reported that one major factor for Eng’s decision may have been that film production costs in the U.S. were one-third of the cost in Hong Kong. She set up her own company, Silver Light, and produced two color motion pictures back to back. Back Street (1948) adapted Fannie Hurst’s 1931 bestseller of the same title and resets the story in a Chinese-American community. Eng apparently chose to adapt the novel because of the tragic element she felt would appeal to Chinese audiences, the exotic tale of two cities set up, here San Francisco and an unspecified Chinese city, and the familiar theme of unfulfilled love that figures prominently in nearly all of her films. Despite the ethnic backdrop, Eng’s adaptation follows the novel’s two Hollywood adaptations in promoting women’s love and sacrifice as a universal theme. A year later, Eng would explore interracial romance in Mad Fire Mad Love (1949).
“With the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, many of the Cantonese opera and film actors that had supported Chinese language filmmaking in the U.S. returned to China and Hong Kong, and the talent drain forced Eng to cease filmmaking. She took over a film distribution business started by her father to bring Hong Kong films to the U.S. and moved to New York City to open the iconic Bo Bo restaurant that would become a gathering place for friends and actors in the motion picture and Cantonese opera business. She even ran a theater exhibiting films she acquired in Hong Kong where she sometimes invited Cantonese opera troops to perform. When she died in early 1970, obituaries appearing in Variety as well as the New York Times remembered her for being a filmmaker, a restaurant owner, and a hub of Chinese film culture in the US.” (S. Louisa Wei, Women Film Pioneers Project)

Climbing the Ladder: Meet Catalyst CCO Josh Wright
AC: What inspired you to co-found Catalyst? Josh Wright (BS Product Design '03) Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer, Catalyst: The seed was planted when I was at ArtCenter. The College trains you to think about design, not just from the aesthetic or mechanical point of view, but also from a business perspective.
At ArtCenter, I was encouraged to look for a business partner. When you have someone who focuses on the financials, you can focus on making design work for the business.
AC: You've had an interesting career trajectory. Can you speak about your journey? JW: Designing for an outdoor lifestyle has always been important to me. In the early years of my career, I started working in California, designing a lot of sports and lifestyle products, including footwear and backpacks for various surf, skate and snow companies.
youtube
Then, I moved to Wichita, Kansas, to work for the iconic Coleman company. It was a cool experience because it was a very small design team, and I got to touch all of their products. After six months, I contributed $30 million to the company's bottom line.
That's something else ArtCenter taught me: Don't go to Porsche; don't go to Apple — they already have great design. Go to a brand that doesn't have great design, yet. Bringing good design and storytelling to their products transformed a 100-year-old brand into something fresh and fun. And they still sell some of my products today.
I later worked at Tumi in New York designing some of their carbon-fiber luggage and helping to expand some of the product categories into footwear, wristwatches and apparel. In 2006, I got this amazing opportunity in Hong Kong and I spent the next four years working at a world-class design consultancy firm. But I was always on the lookout for a business partner, based on what I had learned in school.
AC: How did you meet your Catalyst co-founder? JW: Rock climbing. It's one of the reasons I wanted to move here — the climbing community in Hong Kong brings together such a diverse group of people. My co-founder and I have such different backgrounds — she's from bio-tech and finance.
Through the years, we developed a friendship based on trust from countless days of climbing the jungles. We realized that we had complementary skills, with her business and my design background and our mutual desire to be outdoors. We wanted to create outdoor products that brought value to people's lives — that was the genesis of Catalyst.
AC: What was the first Catalyst product you designed? JW: At the time in 2010, the iPhone was becoming the device of choice, even for climbers, so our product was a fully waterproof protective iPhone 4 case. Soon after, we launched and had a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Today, Catalyst has reached a tipping point where it's becoming a global household brand name; our products are available in over 70 countries and major retailers, including Apple, BestBuy and Target, as well as eight Amazon marketplaces, four Shopify websites and WeChat in China.
AC: Catalyst 20L Waterproof backpack recently received the prestigious Red Dot Award. Can you speak about the design process? JW: Each of our products fills a need and solves a problem. The waterproof backpack offers travelers an ultra-compact, -lightweight pack that folds into a carry pouch that's a little smaller than a 12-ounce soda can.
Waterproof is a core component of Catalyst. I'm kind of a nerd for waterproof products.
I've used this bag as a flotation device while snorkeling in Thailand. I've carried it through heavy tropical rainstorms and through a canyoneering trip in northern Italy, where I was jumping off waterfalls. The backpack works incredibly well. When the bag is rolled up, anything you keep inside it will stay dry.
AC: What are you working on right now? JW: We're always working on something new — we launch eight to 12 products every year. We were the first company to make waterproof cases for Apple watch and AirPods.
The backpack line is something we're currently working on expanding, and soft goods in general. We're heavily focused on expanding our business solutions for industrial applications of our products, including for oil and gas, hospitals and schools.
AC: How do you define success? JW: Being able to create products I believe that bring value to the people who use them, and seeing a lantern I designed for the Coleman company being used on the show The Walking Dead.
AC: Do you have any superstitions? JW: My dad always told me that it is bad luck to be superstitious and I live by that.
AC: What’s the design cliché you’re most tempted to use? JW: I really subscribe to modernism. I believe that form should follow function with zero added details for ornamentation. Everything I build is intentionally designed, but not decorative. We are loosening up this "cliché" by adding some fashion and styling elements to some of our future collections, which I'm pretty excited about.
AC: What’s the one tool you can’t do without? JW: My iPhone.
AC: What’s the first site you look at when you open your computer in the morning? JW: Slack.
AC: What do you do to detox from media and screens? JW: It's not just screens, it's the city itself because Hong Kong is so crowded. My detox is my weekends out in nature: rock climbing, hiking, canyoneering or surfing. I think an amazing secret of Hong Kong is that two-thirds of the territory is subtropical jungle with unreal, pristine waterfalls and beaches.
AC: If you could trade jobs with anyone for a day who would it be? JW: As a designer, there's no other job I'd rather be doing. But as a kid, I always wanted to be a marine biologist like Jacques Cousteau.
AC: What book is on your bedside table? JW: I have three books; none of them are finished. One is a history book called Tragedy & Hope: A History of the World in Our Time, another is a business book The E Myth and the third is a just-for-fun, fiction book called This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It (John Dies at the End).
AC: Who are the most interesting designers working today? JW: Marc Newson. I also really like Michael Young — he's a British-born designer based in Hong Kong. Toy designer Michael Lau was at the forefront of the urban vinyl movement and I love his style. I'm also a huge fan of James Dyson, Jonathan Ive, and entertainment designer Stan Winston has always inspired me.
AC: Were you exposed to design growing up? JW: I come from quite an artistic and mechanically inclined family. My grandfather was a renaissance man: a photographer, inventor, mechanic, engineer, architect, designer... He had so many hobbies and passions, and he created so many things. He made all of my grandmother's jewelry.
He designed and physically built the house his family lived in, including the thermostat and heating system from spare parts. He built motorcycles for my mother and her siblings. When I was a kid, he built us a tree house with a zip line, which was super dangerous, and go-karts. I was always around people who were artistic and creating things.
AC: Describe a moment in your childhood when you first identified as a designer. JW: When I was in high school, I was lucky to have an art teacher who brought in different brochures from art and design schools around the world. For the first time, I was aware you could design cars, toys or products as a career. As a kid, I was always sketching, building models, taking things apart and putting them together. When I found out it was a career path, there was no other option for me.
AC: If you could have a superpower, what would it be? JW: Eternal life — I have too many hobbies and not enough time.
AC: What’s your most prized possession? JW: My grandfather passed away this year, and I have the camera he used when he was working as a photographer and a backpack he built for his Boy Scout group in the 1950s.
AC: Where is your happy place? JW: There are so many! Twenty meters deep, swimming with manta rays off the coast of Thailand, snowboarding in Japan. There's a canyon in Hong Kong that looks like Jurassic Park — it's just so raw with waterfalls everywhere. But to summarize, my happy place is being outside in a gorgeous location with people I care about.
AC: How would your closest friend describe you? JW: A relentless, laser-focused — I hate to say it — asshole, but with a heart of gold.

1. A home frozen in time An enchanting time capsule, the Marion Carll Farmhouse on Long Island has lain empty for years due to a lack of funding and a legal battle over ownership rights that has only just been resolved. Photographer Bryan Sansivero was granted exclusive access by the local school board and district to capture the beguiling Victorian property before its many antiques and curios were removed. Take a peek around the house that time forgot and transport yourself to a bygone era.
2. A faded beauty Located in the hamlet of Commack in Suffolk County, New York, the nine-acre farmstead dates way back to 1701, while the clapboard farmhouse was built on the eve of the Civil War in 1860. The property takes its name from long-time resident Marion Carll, who was born in 1885.
3. A pillar of the community Marion Carll was a renowned teacher who taught in the local district and went on to found the area’s first PTA and had a grammar school named after her in 1957. When she died in 1968, she bequeathed the house to the Commack School Board and District with the proviso that it should only be used for educational and historical purposes.
4. A fight for ownership Occasional classes were offered by the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) but abandoned in the 1990s due to a lack of funding. Since then, the house and surrounding farm have been left vacant. In 2012, Ms Carll’s descendants launched a legal battle with the school board and district which they accused of failing to adhere to the conditions set out in their ancestor’s last will and testament.
5. Period details A New York State Supreme Court judge recently ruled that the school board and district has a right to retain ownership of the property, ending the protracted legal battle. You can see why they fought over this house. Though crumbling, it still boasts oodles of period charm. Ms Carll was clearly keen to preserve its 19th-century allure and did little if nothing during her lifetime to modernize the farmhouse, which is resplendent with fine antiques and interesting curios.
6. The parlor Talk about a time warp home! The parlor contains some wonderfully evocative pieces including this ornate piano by New York City company Calenberg & Vaupel. The firm first started making musical instruments in 1864, four years after the farmhouse was constructed
7. Antique medicines Empty bottles that once contained all sorts of curious concoctions abound in the farmhouse. Note the bottle of paint-stripping potion Pyranzine and the container labeled ‘Laudanum’, a super-potent and extremely addictive tincture of opium that was used to treat pain.
8. Untouched rooms Although covered in thick dust, the house looks as if she has just left the room. Here, her old sewing machine sits ready for use in what would be a bright spot by the window, if the blinds were open.
9. Locked-up riches Ms Carll secured her valuables in a safe manufactured by the famous Hall’s Safe Company. The firm, which was established during the mid 19th century in Cincinnati, makes some of the finest safes and locks in the world and is still going strong today.
10. Original features Beautiful marble fireplaces adorn the rooms in the farmhouse, and though the wallpaper is peeling off, the property’s original features, including the door frames and skirting boards, are in remarkably good condition.
11. Decorative flourishes Charming touches pervade the property. They range from delicately embroidered cushions and blankets to exquisite china pieces and this enamel chamber pot filled with fabric flowers.
12. A family home Photographs of the Carll family are captured here scattered on a table in the farmhouse. As you can see from the classy clothing they are sporting, the family members appear to be comfortably well-off and exceedingly genteel.
13. The ravages of time While some areas of the house look to be in a reasonable state, others are obviously dilapidated and in dire need of restoration work.
14. A snapshot of the past Education was Marion Carll’s vocation and passion, so it comes as no surprise that the much-loved teacher owned a writing bureau, in front of which she no doubt sat for hours composing letter after letter and marking her students’ work.
15. The dining room The dining room is just as well-appointed and elegant as the other rooms in the farmhouse. A solid wooden table takes pride of place in the center, while an imposing cabinet off to the side showcases the family’s fancy china and glassware.
16. Some mod cons The odd relatively modern touch can be found in the house including this attractive Art Deco fan, which contrasts with the Victorian and early 20th-century objects that are dotted around the property.
17. Retro remedies Another curious bottle in this shot: Humphrey’s “30”, a homeopathic remedy to help prevent incontinence and bed-wetting. Intriguingly, the classic concoction is still available these days and can even be snapped up from Amazon.
18. The farmhouse dresser This dresser in what appears to be the farmhouse kitchen contains the family’s day-to-day crockery. The chinoiserie Blue Willow pattern was hugely popular in America during the late 19th century and throughout much of the 20th century.
19. Prints from the past The walls of this room are decorated with several historical prints including a copy of John Trumbull’s iconic Declaration of Independence, which was painted in 1818 and features on the two-dollar bill.
20. Antique furnishings This photo shows what looks like the bathroom or washroom of the farmhouse. Note the white clapboard walls so typical of nearby New England, as well as the fancy gilded mirror and old-style water pump.
21. Old lace The master bedroom contains a box of sewing threads and a dressmaking dummy covered with an exquisite lace piece that was presumably hand-tailored by Ms Carll herself.
22. A picture of neglect This wider shot of the master bedroom shows exactly what years of vacancy and neglect can do to a property that was once meticulously maintained. Paint is peeling off the walls, while the floor and furniture are littered with debris.
23. A 1930s timepiece Another Art Deco piece, this wind-up Ingraham Meteor alarm clock was manufactured in 1936. It sits next to a dusty empty bottle of C. C. Parsons’ Household Ammonia, an essential cleaning product from way back when.
24. Faded fashions More dressmaking paraphernalia in this room. Against those starkly cracked walls, this space has a rather dramatic and eerie feel. The dummy is dressed in a corseted bodice and cage crinoline which was used to support the elaborate skirts and bustles of 19th-century dresses.
25. A simpler way of life This evocative shot shows a chest of drawers that was used as a wash table. Age-old toiletry products feature on the tabletop alongside a jug, bowl and antique towels for daily ablutions.
26. Dancing days gone by A pair of black ballet-style shoes, which may have been hand-embroidered by Marion Carll or another member of the family, lie on one of the linen-covered beds in the property, placed next to two fabric roses.
27. A glimpse into history Peering into the long hallway on the upper floor of the farmhouse, you can’t help but notice how rundown parts of the property have become. This wing of the house was used to accommodate slaves before the abolition of slavery in 1865, thereafter it served as the servants’ quarters.
28. A vintage tableau In contrast to the long hallway, this bedroom is in fairly good shape and doesn’t look like it would need much more than repapering to restore it to its former glory. Silk dresses, straw hats and ballet shoes pack the closet, along with a pretty parasol.
29. The attic The attic room looks like it was once used for storage or perhaps sleeping quarters for domestic staff. Damp stains the ceiling and a number of rusty old cage crinolines hang from wooden hooks on the wall.
30. A grand inheritance The beauty of this time capsule home, but for now at least the gates remain closed on the property while the Commack School Board consult the community on its fate. Options include turning it into a public park, a working organic farm and creating an education center, all in the spirit of Marion Carll’s wishes.

A step inside the Marion Carll Farmhouse 1. A home frozen in time An enchanting time capsule, the Marion Carll Farmhouse on Long Island has lain empty for years due to a lack of funding and a legal battle over ownership rights that has only just been resolved.

From Forbes.com
E-commerce giant Dangdang and self-publishing platform PublishDrive announced a partnership that, for the first time, allows authors in the West to make their self-published e-books available on the website.
Dangdang, whose competitors are Amazon (Dangdang, like Amazon, just got into the physical bookstore game, opening its first store in January of this year; it also launched an e-reader, like Amazon, in 2012) and JD.com, launched its e-book platform in late 2011, but, until now, that platform had not been usable by Western authors.
Beyond the fact that this partnership is important because of the fact that many books in China are the product of state-sponsored publishers, the Chinese e-book market is expected to grow around 30% annually for the next three years. That means a lot of potential eyeballs for writers in the West.
