the great thing about the climax of Hobbes and Shaw is that it could just as easily take place in the American South (get together with your 8 million cousins on the family farm to booby trap the shit out of the place with petrol explosives so that The Man (government, corporation, whatever) has a hell of a time when they send in the repo guys, also put some insane and dubiously legal aftermarket mods on your tractor while you're at it). I think that cultural commonality is beautiful, except for one thing: rural Southerners don't have anything that could be considered equivalent to a haka! there is an urgent need to get on that, I think

China sends in the "national team" to help with the unfolding property crisis
Over the weekend we saw more rumours of developments in the ongoing Chinese property crisis. This morning we are told this by the Financial Times. Shares in Country Garden slumped to a record low on Monday after the Chinese developer suspended trading in at least 10 of its mainland bonds, spurring a wider sell-off in property-linked stocks. The company, formerly the largest developer in China by…

the funniest thing about this post is that it sums up the entirety of ancient Chinese politics more concisely and accurately than any documentary or think piece. the second biggest joke is the chinese football team.

I'd have literally any sympathy for people calling for Israel's expulsion from the Olympics if:
1. I'd seen people call for expulsions for China, Iran, Rwanda, Sudan, (frankly Palestine too seeing as people seem to think Hamas are legit leaders as they are a openly genocidal oppressive regime)...
2. Israel had been actually legally been found to be committing genocide (which it hasn't. They were told not to let the war become one), but apparently it's guilty until proven innocent which has already been decided to be impossible (by most leftists).
The world is in a shit place but blaming it all on Israel simply antisemitism. And holding Israel to a double standard is antisemitism - because what makes Israel different that means you think it's acceptable to treat that one nation differently to everyone else...
So yeah, I have 0 time for the people abusing the Israeli team and pretending they are the worst people in the world

Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine Who Vanished in 1924 Found on Mount Everest
The foot, boot and sock thought to belong to Sandy Irvine, who disappeared during George Mallory's 1924 expedition to climb Mount Everest, have likely been found. They could be a vital clue in unraveling an even bigger mystery.
Remains believed to belong to a British explorer who vanished more than 100 years ago while climbing Mount Everest have finally been found.
Andrew Comyn "Sandy" Irvine, aged 22, disappeared along with the mountaineer George Mallory in June 1924. The pair were attempting to become the first people to scale the world's highest peak.
It's still a mystery whether they succeeded in their goal before they died. Mallory's remains were discovered in 1999, which were missing a photograph of his wife that the climber had planned to leave on the summit. Irving, who had been carrying a Kodak camera that may have recorded a possible historic summit, was never recovered. The summit was officially first reached 29 years later, when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay scaled Everest from its south side in 1953.
Now, a National Geographic documentary team, including the Oscar-winning director Jimmy Chin and the climbers and filmmakers Erich Roepke and Mark Fisher, have found what they believe is Irvine's foot.
Tumblr media
Encased in a boot and wearing a sock stitched with his name, the foot was discovered on Everest's Central Rongbuk Glacier, further down the mountain from Mallory's remains.
"I lifted up the sock," Chin told National Geographic, "and there's a red label that has A.C. IRVINE stitched into it."
Irvine and Mallory were last seen on June 8, 1924, as they set off to scale the summit. One of their expedition teammates, Noel Odell, reported spotting the two near the second of the mountain's three steps as two tiny black dots. One of the dots broke past the skyline during a brief parting of the clouds, then they disappeared.
Tumblr media
Mallory's body was found less than 2,000 feet (600 meters) from the summit by the U.S. rock climber Conrad Anker. Mallory's remains were tied by a rope around the waist and had injuries suggesting that the pair had fallen while connected together.
By searching near these remains and scouring the glacier for clues, Chin and his team located the boot melting out of the ice.
"This was a monumental and emotional moment for us and our entire team on the ground, and we just hope this can finally bring peace of mind to his relatives and the climbing world at large," Chin said.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The team sent the remains to China Tibet Mountaineering Association, which is responsible for climbing permits on Everest's northern side. The find was also reported to the Royal Geographical Society, which organized Irvine and Mallory's expedition, and Irvine's great niece and biographer, Julie Summers.
"I have lived with this story since I was a 7-year-old when my father told us about the mystery of Uncle Sandy on Everest," Summers said, as reported by the Guardian. "When Jimmy told me that he saw the name AC Irvine on the label on the sock inside the boot, I found myself moved to tears. It was and will remain an extraordinary and poignant moment."
The Irvine family has volunteered to take a DNA test so that the identity of the remains can be conclusively determined. Meanwhile, Chin and his team will continue to search for more artifacts. If Irvine's camera is found and it can prove they scaled the peak, it could potentially rewrite history.

There is no obvious path between today’s machine learning models — which mimic human creativity by predicting the next word, sound, or pixel — and an AI that can form a hostile intent or circumvent our every effort to contain it. Regardless, it is fair to ask why Dr. Frankenstein is holding the pitchfork. Why is it that the people building, deploying, and profiting from AI are the ones leading the call to focus public attention on its existential risk? Well, I can see at least two possible reasons. The first is that it requires far less sacrifice on their part to call attention to a hypothetical threat than to address the more immediate harms and costs that AI is already imposing on society. Today’s AI is plagued by error and replete with bias. It makes up facts and reproduces discriminatory heuristics. It empowers both government and consumer surveillance. AI is displacing labor and exacerbating income and wealth inequality. It poses an enormous and escalating threat to the environment, consuming an enormous and growing amount of energy and fueling a race to extract materials from a beleaguered Earth. These societal costs aren’t easily absorbed. Mitigating them requires a significant commitment of personnel and other resources, which doesn’t make shareholders happy — and which is why the market recently rewarded tech companies for laying off many members of their privacy, security, or ethics teams. How much easier would life be for AI companies if the public instead fixated on speculative theories about far-off threats that may or may not actually bear out? What would action to “mitigate the risk of extinction” even look like? I submit that it would consist of vague whitepapers, series of workshops led by speculative philosophers, and donations to computer science labs that are willing to speak the language of longtermism. This would be a pittance, compared with the effort required to reverse what AI is already doing to displace labor, exacerbate inequality, and accelerate environmental degradation. A second reason the AI community might be motivated to cast the technology as posing an existential risk could be, ironically, to reinforce the idea that AI has enormous potential. Convincing the public that AI is so powerful that it could end human existence would be a pretty effective way for AI scientists to make the case that what they are working on is important. Doomsaying is great marketing. The long-term fear may be that AI will threaten humanity, but the near-term fear, for anyone who doesn’t incorporate AI into their business, agency, or classroom, is that they will be left behind. The same goes for national policy: If AI poses existential risks, U.S. policymakers might say, we better not let China beat us to it for lack of investment or overregulation. (It is telling that Sam Altman — the CEO of OpenAI and a signatory of the Center for AI Safety statement — warned the E.U. that his company will pull out of Europe if regulations become too burdensome.)

“Sir, here are the Beatty files.” The young woman told me, handing a USB key.
I have heard a lot about these files. They were intercepted in the town after which they’re named by the secret services a while ago, but were encrypted in such a puzzling way that only now can we view them. And of course, I am the first one to be able to review its content.
I know a lot of things, as it is my job to be informed of anything and everything happening around the world. I know the plans of China over Taiwan, the successor to the Ayatollah, the contents of the talks between Putin and Kim Jong-un, and all the current US military strategy. In my line of work, everything can happen, yet at no single point could I make sense of the Beatty files. Nor could anyone else for that matter.
I excused the young woman, bidding to her my thanks for the deciphering team, and went to the unused laptop I had prepared. When it comes to matters of national security, I cannot afford to be careless, and let anyone unlicensed to get access to this. So brand new laptop, created by us, which has never been opened, to open these files.
And so I fiddled with the parameters a bit, entering the secret code, and inserted the USB key to view its contents. Inside were a few files, all of which videos. Their names were not informative, since I know for a fact that their original names were not recovered, so I just opened the first file in the list.
The video opened looking down in a white cubic room, meaning it was very likely a security camera recording. In addition, there was the time indicated on the bottom right, yet something felt weird about how it was displayed… 15:58… 15:59… 15:60 ???... 16:01, etc. Why is it not counting time correctly ? Nobody indicates time like this ! It’s wrong, it’s incorrect ! I just opened it and there’s already something I cannot in any way explain !
Taking a deep breath, I look at the center of the screen, in which I have a good view of a man sat in a chair. He has tanned skin, black hair and black stubble, and a very developed musculature. He looks to be a very attractive middle-eastern man, although I cannot say which ethnicity he precisely has.
Tumblr media
The chair he’s sitting on is quite massive, and he looks almost as if he is… restrained in it ? Yes, there seems to be little handcuffs tethering him to the armchairs. But most striking are the numerous tubes going out from his arms, legs, torso and even head, linked to some types of medical appliances I cannot recognize, as well as to a sort of glass tank.
Suddenly, I notice the deep voice of a man. I up the volume, and hear… a language I cannot understand.
“Tzai en 19/03, 2:17, en tzoujkbruoi odogattzion program en Scipio Labratory. Ny hse Hk. Adtem, tzai widt nyn hskadiais, Sjd. Fingtrosy ÿ Sd. Vagohs, ÿ naum wom fill no tzoujketvÿsn ekspÿrians widt no #1073 bymarjen.”
At first I get some German vibes from it, but then it seems to be Polish, and then French… Whatever that language might be, it is not one I have ever heard. The man in the chair looks around, seemingly half-dazed, as if he was drugged. I don’t know what will happen to him, yet I get the feeling that it won’t be a desirable fate.
Suddenly, another voice, that of a woman by the looks of things, speaking in that same strange language.
“Hsüzmalhsÿv drël en im.”
Then a buzzer sound. There seems to be some white substance flowing inside the man’s body, through the tubes from the medical appliances. As it flows, I can see his eyes starting to become more droopy, before fluttering, and then closing. At the same time, his body starts floundering in the restraints, as if he was keeping himself from falling asleep. But as time went on and the white liquid ran dry, all of his muscles were relaxing and his stance become limp, like that of a dysfunctional robot. However, looking at his accelerating breathing rhythm, it seems to my trained eye that he is not actually asleep. It’s only his body refusing to function correctly.
“Drël ingkatzt. Etvÿsn harjimÿll.” Says another voice, deeper than the last one, but not as deep as the first one.
I don’t really know what’s happening. If the counter on the bottom-right of the screen wasn’t ticking up, I would have thought that the image was frozen. But then, suddenly, I can hear a low sound in the recording. And that sounds starts creeping higher and higher, as if something was charging up… Yeah, definitively charging up, since I almost saw some lightning sparks going off from the chair…
I don’t know what’s happening, but it seems to be malfunctioning. The sparks make themselves more and more intense, and it almost seems as if the machine is ready to explode...
Just as I say that, the first deep voice makes itself heard once again, but this time more in a frustrated or worried tone than an official one.
“Sel heont havy… Go huop sel hstill pÿrdont...”
But suddenly, the sparks stop, and while the sound doesn’t stop, beige liquid start flowing into the pipes… from the man to the tank ? What is that thing ? I don’t understand ! However, I can hear cries of rejoice in the audience, with all three voices I’ve heard since then saying incomprehensible stuff that I wouldn’t even be able to transcribe. I guess they also didn’t think… whatever this is would work ?
I take a drink from my water bottle as I keep an eye on the video. However, since I need to reach my bag, I cannot actively monitor it. Besides, according to what I hear, nothing of note seems to be happening... But when I have put down the bottle, I stop the video. I rub my eyes, but even then, I still see it.
The man seems smaller.
Somehow.
I go back in the video to the time where the man with the deepest voice sounded worried and… Yeah, looking like that, it’s even more apparent. The man has been losing mass. And the tanks have been filled by this beige skin-color liquid… Heh, if I didn’t know I was in reality, I would have said that this is muscle-juice, but this is ridiculous…
Especially since the body mass hasn’t been the only thing to change.
As I play back the video and continue through the long haul of high-pitch noise and not much else, I notice that the man’s stubble seems to be disappearing… and his head hair growing as well, somehow ? It almost seems as if he’s becoming less masculine by the second, if it even makes any sense, even though nothing about this video actually makesanysense. If I didn’t know who supplied it to me, I would have said this was a fake…
As his pecs were shrinking, his arms were thinning, his waist narrowing and his legs slimming, his stance almost seemed to be relaxing further – if it’s even possible. I mean, I don’t know ! It’s just the impression that I’m getting ! As the last of his stubble vanishes, at least according to what I can see through the pixels, he almost seems to be getting cuter ? Whence more relaxed ? Fuck, this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever…
Oh. I know why I get this impression. It’s not anymore weird or nonsensical, but at least in this context it seems to make sense… I think he also is losing height. Yes, actually. Height. It’s almost as if someone took the textbook definition of a “twink” and decided to impart its characteristic on this poor fellow – don’t ask me why I know what it is.
As I continue watching in horror, the woman’s voice says, gleefully :
“Entzony as hen !”
How can they sound so… happy ? Happy to torture a man like this ? To, quite visibly, drain his muscles into those tanks that look more and more full ? It just goes beyond me ! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen my fair share of horrible and unethical treatments, and a ton of unethical human experiments. But this by far takes the cake of the most disturbing thing I have ever seen ! They’re taking away what he is, his identity ! Him ! That’s the most cruel violation of human rights I have ever seen ! To gleefully disfigure someone like that…
The tanks have finished filling up, and the sound starts lowering in intensity. The man left looks only like a shadow of who he was. He still looks like himself, except devoid of any… meat, may I say ? When the machine was well and truly turned off, the deep voice rejoiced, seemingly announcing the success of that terrible plot.
“Fÿstyfuroll ! Oll fod havy kotzvong !”
Funnily enough, the first word made me think of “feast for all”, which just feels wrong given the context. On that, they all seem to have left the premises, as a nurse came in and untethered the poor man from all the equipment, and taking with her the tanks filled of muscle juice.
I continued watching, hoping that I would get to see the young man wake up.
And wake up he did, looking around, before standing up… and immediately falling. Presumably due to him not expecting to be this skinny. He then looked at himself, and had an utterly horrified look in his eyes, as if he was processing the fact that he was irremediably different.
He crawled towards the wall, and using that, he climbed back to standing, managing to take a position so that he could be looking at the camera.
And on that, the video suddenly stopped, leaving me on this freeze frame :
Tumblr media
I absolutely don’t know what to do with that. Now I not only understand, but also feel how confused the secret services were by intercepting this message. It just seems wrong in so many ways, so much that… it might not even have occurred on Earth for all I know ! The language is unknown, but familiar. The way to count time is disturbing, but otherwise identical to ours. The events depicted are of typical mad experimentation, but in a manner that is unthinkable in my knowledge of the world.
I don’t have the strength to view any of the other videos, since they’re likely all the same amount of disturbing. So I close the laptop, and already starts asking myself the question I need to give an answer for my superiors :
Just what the hell are the Beatty files ?!

ellen weinberg
a lot of people online like to praise her because they love her kids, but before she was mama hughes, ellen weinberg was an even more accomplished athlete than her wikipedia page can tell you. well i have way too much time on my hands and an affinity for googling things, so here is a not-so-little primer on the matriarch of hockey who has contributed far more than just her superstar children.
(basically anything not sourced is from the cammi & aj podcast i have a transcript of)
born in st. louis, she was told she couldn't play hockey because girls couldn't play on boys teams in the state of missouri, and there were no girls teams. went to bob johnson's hockey camp in aspen at age 7. moved to dallas at age 8, where she was allowed to play on the boys team. at age 12, is featured in a news clip "girl hockey player" where she says she wants to one day play professional hockey.
Tumblr media
at 15, wins nationals with her U-19 soccer team, the dallas sting, and they are sent to represent the US in the first ever FIFA-sanctioned world women’s tournament in china and proceeded to win gold against all expectations becoming the first US team to win any international soccer competition, male or female. also on this team was her best friend, future woso legend carla werden (overbeck). 1, 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
other noteworthy teammates: she played with mia hamm on her state team and was roommates with brandi chastain at her first youth national team camp for soccer.
she was recruited to lots of top schools for soccer, but chose the university of new hampshire because it was also offering hockey. she describes this as "the lack of landscape really drove my next move" because there was only 31 D1 women's soccer programs in the country at the time, and none in the state of texas.
she reached out to the women's hockey coach at unh, russ mccurdy, and told him she was being recruited for soccer but was really coming to unh because she wanted to play hockey, and he told her that it was unlikely she would make the team. so bob johnson called and asked him to give her a shot, and he said ok. he allowed her to have a one week tryout once soccer season was over, and after the first day, he asked, "what size skates do you wear?" and that was it, she was on the team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the women's soccer coach, marge anderson, was also a lacrosse player, and encouraged ellen to join the lacrosse team that needed more players. so she did. in her own words:
"I wasn't very good. I could run, but my stick skills- and I learned and I did everything, and it was great, and we went to the Final Four, but I was out at that point. So everybody always says I played three sports like, I was on the team. I was, you know, three sports at that level. I was done at that point and I stuck with soccer and hockey after my first year. But it was a really cool experience."
she may have not been very good but she did go on to coach her own kids teams in lacrosse (and potentially owen power, who is confirmed to have played lacrosse with them but it is not confirmed that it was when she coached them)
Tumblr media
(she was #21)
she was an elite skater and creative player, and "would often find herself in trouble in Durham for rushing the puck from her defensive post or trying things like a spin-o-rama".
Tumblr media
she helped UNH win 3 hockey championships in 4 years, made the all-new england team (soccer) as a freshman, was named an unh athlete of the year finalist after an injury that kept her out for an entire school year, was named to the ECAC all star team, was an ISAA senior recognition award winner, was soccer co-captain in 1990, and then captain of both the soccer and hockey teams as a senior X
Tumblr media
in april 1991, she participated in the Eastern Regional Tryouts of the US National Women's Hockey Team
"We've got it pretty good, playing defense," says senior Ellen Weinberg to fellow defenseman Weston. "There aren't as many of us to choose from. But then, when you look at who's there, they're all good!"
she then went on to pursue a graduate degree at UNH where she was an assistant coach for both soccer and hockey for two years, all the while contributing to historical hockey research to the point that she is named in the acknowledgements of Hockey: A Global History by Hardy & Holman
“It was my way of staying involved because I had nowhere to play. Then I participated in the 1992 World Championship, finished my master's degree. Then I really had nowhere to play." (google translated)
Tumblr media
The New Hampshire Vol. 83 No. 18 (Nov. 6 1992)
then in 1992, she played for the women's national team in both soccer and hockey.
Tumblr media
the soccer team didn't play in any big tournaments that year, but for hockey she went to women's worlds in tampere, finland, where she was an alternate captain. the US won silver, with ellen scoring 3 or 4 assists in 5 games (depending on which source you believe) and ellen was named to the all-star team by the media as the top player in her position.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also in 1992, she was a power skating coach at the summerland female hockey academy, teaching future star hayley wickenheiser.
there was hope that women's hockey would be a part of the 1994 olympics, but when that didn't happen, ellen went to norway anyways to grow the game.
“They were hoping women’s hockey was going to be sanctioned in the ‘94 Olympics and it wasn’t, so the Norwegian ice hockey federation had all this extra funding so they asked USA Hockey for an ambassador to go over and help grow the women’s game,” she said. “We had played in the ’92 World Championships and I was one of the older people and they offered me that opportunity to go over and work with the Norwegian ice hockey federation and what I did was I lived in Oslo. “And I went around to all the little towns and taught the girls how to play. It was awesome. Since Norway was such a small country with four million people at the time, they needed all the buses during the Olympics so everyone went on holiday, so my job stopped for three weeks.” X
ELLEN WEINBERG of Boston and the University of New Hampshire was interested in Coach TIM TAYLOR's tactics at practice. The 25-year-old Weinberg, one of America's best female players, is advising Norway's women's teams. Women's hockey becomes an Olympic sport in 1998. "They complain in Norway that I coach too long on the ice," she said. "They should see this guy, always instructing." X
she was invited to camp in lake placid for the 1994 women’s worlds (which took place every two years then), but suffered a serious knee injury that she believes is because they didn’t have proper support/training facilities
“We didn’t have a gym at the time. It was so different. We just played relying on our athletic instincts. If I got injured, it’s probably because I didn’t have the ideal support,” (google translated) X
by 1996 she was playing for the itech blaiders roller hockey team in NJ (and her then-boyfriend, jim, was coaching the new jersey rockin’ rollers) while also working in broadcasting
she had been considered a lock for the nagano olympics, despite being “old” but that “blown-out knee effectively ended her competitive career” :(
she ended up in nagano anyways as a reporter for cbs, one of her first big gigs in her media career, which i can do a part 2 on if there's interest.
and currently she’s on the USA hockey foundation board and is a player development consultant for the women’s national team

getting what she wants

summary: lena knows she gets what she wants

you and your girlfriend had always been complicated—never simple, never easy.
it started back in 2021 when you and sloan played at psg. the chemistry on the field between you two was undeniable, but off the field, it was a different story.
the beginning wasn’t so bad, though. she caught feelings for you shortly after she went through a breakup, but you didn’t think much of it. you were happy that someone was interested in you, someone as gorgeous as sloan.
if you were to tell anyone about it now, you'd say it wasn’t the worst relationship, but it definitely wasn’t the best either.
sloan was magnetic, and in those early days, you were drawn to her like everyone else was drawn to her. the older woman was a fierce defender in paris, while you were a threatening midfielder that scared the defenders on the opposite team.
the woman would pull you in, wrap you up in her intensity, and you’d get lost in the way she’d look at you, the way she’d run up to you if you took a hit on the pitch– it was like you were her whole world. and for a while, it felt like you were.
savannah was always there, in the background, but you didn’t mind. you played with both of them on the united states national team, and savannah never seemed like a threat.
she was just part of the past with sloan—something you didn't think twice about. you had bigger things to worry about, like football, your career. you weren’t the type to get jealous over old exs that your girlfriend had.
things shifted in 2022 when you left for bayern munich, after you spent three seasons with PSG.
the move was huge for you. it was a chance to grow, to focus on your game in another league, and push yourself to new heights.
sloan went back to the states, joining portland thorns. her contract didn’t expire with PSG but she didn’t want to stay if you weren’t there.
the long distance was rough, but you both promised to make it work. you'd have late-night calls, texting between training sessions, and sending each other pictures of your day, trying to stay connected despite the time zone difference.
but then, overtime, you started noticing things.
small, subtle shifts. the first time sloan told you that her and savannah texting again. at first, you were alarmed until sloan told you that savannah, who played for louisville, was going to go up against the thorns in the NWSL that week.
you told yourself it was nothing. they’d known each other forever; of course, they'd stay in touch. your mind brushed it off, telling yourself that your trust in sloan was stronger than whatever history she had with savannah.
but it didn’t take long for sophia, your friend on the national team who played at the same club as sloan, to notice.
during one of your national team camps, the ones against china in florida, she pulled you aside, a concerned look on her face.
“have you talked to sloan recently?” she asked, her tone light but her eyes searching.
“yeah, of course,” you replied, a little confused by her question.
“why?”
sloan was still recovering from an ACL injury, so her club and national team agreed to have the 26 year old play for only portland games for now. she wasn’t called up for the national team so you couldn’t see her this time in the states.
sophia sighs in hesitation,
“i don’t want to stir anything up, but sloan was showing me some tiktok on her phone unaware that um...well,, i saw some messages. between her and savannah. they seemed kinda... i don’t know, close?”
you felt your stomach drop, but you forced a laugh.
“it’s nothing. they’re just friends.” you convinced yourself.
“just be careful, okay?” sophia didn’t look convinced.
you nodded, but that seed of doubt had already been planted.
later that night, you couldn’t stop thinking about it. the way sloan’s messages had become more distant, the way she’d brush off your questions with a quick “i’m just busy babe” or “practice has been rough.” you tried to push it down, telling yourself it was all in your head.
until one day, you couldn’t anymore.
a few weeks later, you were scrolling through your phone after a long training session in germany when you saw it. videos.
they were everywhere—sloan and savannah, out at some club in portland, laughing, dancing, and way too close for comfort. the headlines were brutal, and your stomach twisted into knots as you scrolled through the comments, people speculating about what was going on between them.
you couldn’t breathe.
immediately, you dialed sloan’s number, your fingers shaking as you waited for her to pick up.
you had to run into your living room, since lea and georgia were staying over your house and were sleeping in the guest room beside your bedroom. there was no way that you would wake them up, even in this condition.
“hey, babe,” she answered casually, as if nothing had happened.
“what the FUCK, sloan?” your voice cracked, the anger and hurt pouring out all at once.
there was a pause on the other end, just long enough to make you feel even worse.
“it’s not what it looks like,” she finally said, her voice too calm, too rehearsed.
“it sure as hell doesn’t look good,” you shot back.
“you’re out partying with savannah? after you told me there was nothing going on?”
sloan sighed.
“i told you, it’s nothing. we just went out for drinks with our teams. it’s not a big deal.”
“not a big deal?” you couldn’t believe what you were hearing.
“sloan, everyone’s talking about it. you’re all over the news. do you even realize how this makes me look? do you know how this makes YOU look?”
you hated how much you still cared about her and her image. of course everyone on the internet was dragging sloan’s name through the filth for your defense.
“you’re overreacting. savannah’s just a friend who happens to be my ex too. you need to stop letting other people get into your head.” sloan said, annoyed.
but you couldn’t calm down. how could you? not when the entire world had just seen your girlfriend getting close with her ex like it was nothing.
your heart ached, torn between the love you still had for sloan and the anger bubbling inside you.
“i can’t believe you,” you whispered, tears stinging your eyes.
“i trusted you!”
“and i haven’t done anything to break that trust,” sloan shot back, her voice harder now.
“look, if you don’t trust me, that’s on you. i can’t control how people perceive things.”
you hung up the phone without another word, your chest heavy, the pain sinking deeper with every passing second.
as you collapsed onto the ground, you felt a pair of arms catch you. the vanilla scent of the person’s chest told you that it was lea schuller hugging you as you cried.
weeks afterwards– you threw yourself into training, trying to ignore the hurt, the betrayal. but it lingered, gnawing at you, distracting you during every practice, every match. no matter how hard you tried to focus, your mind kept wandering back to sloan, to those videos, to the lies.
you couldn’t go to the states to confront her, and that only made it worse. you were stuck, miles away, helpless.
many months later, it's July 1st 2024. despite everything—the distance, the arguments, the emotional drain—you and sloan were still together.
maybe it was the comfort of it all, the familiarity. you’d been with her for so long that the thought of letting go felt impossible. breaking up seemed like more effort than just sticking it out.
even if things weren’t great, they weren’t unbearable. or at least, that’s what you kept telling yourself.
sloan wasn’t seen with her ex again. in fact, she never mentioned savannah again, and you didn’t ask. but the tension hung between you like a fog, thick and ever-present. every time you checked social media, every time her name came up in conversation, your stomach would knot up, the unease always lingering. but nothing ever changed.
after each conversation with sloan, you felt empty. like a weight had been lifted, but at the same time, it left a hollow space inside you. the next few days passed in a blur.
you threw yourself into training, desperate to block out the pain, but even football wasn’t the escape it usually was.
that’s when lena oberdorf started showing up in your life. she’d recently moved to bayern from wolfsburg, and though you’d played against her plenty of times, you never really knew her well. she was fierce on the pitch, strong and confident.
in fact, you had a perception of her since you fell victim to her side tackles on many, many occasions. but you started to notice lena’s behavior around you after training, she was different—softer, a little shy even.
it started with small things. lena would linger after practice, making conversation, asking how you were doing.
at first, you chalked it up to her being friendly, trying to settle into her new team and make friends outside of the ones she knew from the national team.
a week later, before the national break that will lead into the olympics– training was going well. your focus was locked in on the drills as the team worked through possession exercises.
everything felt sharp, crisp. your legs were taking you towards the goal until georgia came in hard, a tackle from the side catching your leg at an awkward angle. you hit the ground hard, a sharp pain shooting through your ankle.
“y/n!” you heard georgia’s voice above the ringing in your ears as she stands up from the ground.
“shit shit shit!!! i’m so sorry. i didn’t mean to—”
before she could finish, lena was already by your side, practically sprinting over from the other side of the field.
she dropped to her knees next to you, her hands immediately on your shoulders.
“are you okay? where does it hurt?” lena’s voice was frantic, her eyes wide with concern as she looked you over, clearly scanning for any sign of serious injury.
“i’m fine, lena,” you muttered, trying to sit up.
“just... give me a sec.” the pain wasn’t as bad as you first thought. it was more of a shock than anything.
lena wasn’t having it.
“you don’t look fine,” she insisted, gently pushing you back down as you tried to get up.
“you should stay down for a bit. what if it’s worse than you think?”
georgia hovered nearby, an apologetic look on her face. “i didn’t mean to go in that hard. really, i’m sorry, y/n.”
“what the hell, georgia? you didn’t have to go in on her like that—it’s training, not a match!” lena shot her a glare, her protective streak kicking in immediately.
“i know, i know,” georgia said, holding up her hands in surrender.
“i was just going for the ball, i didn’t mean to hurt her.”
you could see the tension building between the two of them,
lena getting more worked up than necessary. it wasn’t the first time lena had gotten overprotective over you, but this was definitely one of the more intense moments. you placed a hand on her arm, trying to calm her down.
“lena, seriously, i’m fine. it’s not a big deal.”
but she wasn’t having it. “no, it is a big deal. she should’ve been more careful.”
georgia rolled her eyes but kept her distance, clearly not wanting to escalate things. the rest of the team had started to gather around, watching the scene unfold with a mixture of concern and amusement.
“she’s tough, lena,” georgia said with a small smile, trying to diffuse the situation.
“she’s not made of glass.” you wanted to giggle after georgia said that, but you didn’t want to piss off a protective lena.
“maybe, but that doesn’t mean you can just throw her to the ground,” lena snapped back, still kneeling beside you, her hands hovering protectively around you like she was scared you might fall apart any second.
"you're one to talk about putting people on the ground!" georgia says before laughing at lena's smirk, a smirk she tried to hide knowing that georgia is right.
the team, noticing the bickering, started exchanging looks.
a few stifled laughs could be heard, and you knew exactly what was coming.
“uh, lena?” tuva called out from behind you, a teasing grin on her face. “y/n is okay.”
tuva pulls lena, gently, away from you as you stand up. your ankle is sore but not painful. you were okay.
“you do realize y/n’s taken, right?” lea whispered to lena, but you still heard it.
you groaned inwardly, knowing exactly where this was headed.
“yeah, lena, i don’t think her girlfriend would be too happy about all this... care you’re giving y/n,” giulia added, her voice dripping with amusement.
lena flushed, her cheeks turning a shade of red you hadn’t seen before. she quickly stood up, brushing off her shorts, though she still hovered close to you, as if she wasn’t quite ready to leave your side.
“i’m just making sure she’s okay,” lena muttered, avoiding everyone’s eyes.
you couldn’t help but laugh a little despite the situation. “lena, seriously, i’m fine. you don’t need to go full paramedic on me. besides guys, you don’t have to mention her while we are here”
“oh!” sydney says, laughing.
the teasing continued, the team now fully enjoying the spectacle.
“she’s going full-on protective mode, isn’t she?” pernille chuckled, giving lena a nudge.
“you’ve got it bad, oberdorf.” madga joins.
“it’s just concern,” lena muttered, clearly embarrassed now, trying to avoid the teasing looks being thrown her way.
you finally managed to walk, rolling your ankle a bit to check for any real damage. again, it was sore, but nothing too serious. you were fine—like you’d been saying all along.
“see? i told you. i’m okay.”
“well, that’s a relief,” lena mumbled, though the look of worry in her eyes hadn’t completely disappeared. she stood a little closer than necessary, and the team noticed.
they noticed how you let her stay close to you too.
“yeah, ‘relief,’” georgia echoed, shaking her head in amusement.
“seriously though, y/n’s fine. no need to be so protective, lena—- i’m sorry y/n.”
the teasing continued as the team dispersed, but lena stayed near you, still looking a little flustered.
“i just didn’t want her to be hurt,” she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.
you gave her a soft smile, appreciating her concern, even if it was a little overboard.
“i know. but it’s okay. i’m tougher than i look.”
lena saw lea’s smile turn into a quick frown at that, she makes a mental note to question her best friend about that later.
after that morning in training, you began to notice the way lena looked at you. there was something more in her eyes, something you hadn’t picked up on before.
the next day, after a tough session, you were sitting on the sidelines, catching your breath, when lena plopped down beside you.
“you okay?” she asked, her voice gentle, her eyes scanning your face.
you nodded, forcing a smile. “yeah, just tired.”
but lena wasn’t convinced. “i’ve noticed you’ve been... off lately. is it sloan?”
lena asked lea why you seemed off. lea told her the backstory about your relationship with the portland thorn’s defender. she did her own research afterwards, realizing how bad it really was.
the mention of sloan’s name made your stomach twist. you didn’t want to talk about her, not now, not ever.
“it’s complicated.”
lena hesitated for a moment, then quietly said,
“you don’t deserve what she is putting you through, y/n. you deserve someone who’s going to put you first.”
you glanced at her, surprised by the intensity in her words. there was something in the way she said it, the quiet conviction, that made you pause.
“it’s not that simple,” you mumbled, looking down at the ground.
“we’ve been together for so long, and— i don’t know.”
“maybe that’s the problem,” lena said, her voice soft but firm.
“maybe you’ve been holding on to something that’s already gone.”
you didn’t respond. you couldn’t, because deep down, you knew she was right. sloan wasn’t fighting for you anymore, and maybe she never had.
lena stayed by your side for the rest of the day, offering silent support.
and as the days went on, her presence became something you looked forward to—her quiet smiles, her easy laughter, the way she’d stick around just to make sure you were okay.
it wasn’t long before you started noticing the little things she did for you. bringing you coffee before training, giving you rides home, offering to help with your recovery sessions after each training.
it was subtle, but there was a certain care in everything she did, something you hadn’t felt from sloan in a long time.
one afternoon, the last training before the national break for the olympics, lena comes up to you after the showers.
“hey, you want to grab dinner?” she asked casually, but there was something in her tone that made your heart race a little faster.
“uh, yeah, sure,” you replied, caught off guard.
you ended up at a quiet restaurant, tucked away from the usual chaos.
over dinner, lena was different. more open, more confident. she asked about your life, your interests outside of football, and for the first time in a while, you found yourself genuinely enjoying someone’s company.
halfway through the meal, she leaned back in her chair, her eyes locking onto yours.
“y/n, can i be honest with you?”
your heart skipped a beat. “of course.”
“I've been attracted to you for a long time,” she admitted, her cheeks flushing slightly.
“since before you moved to bayern. but i didn’t want to say anything because... well, i knew you were with sloan.”
you blinked, taken aback by her confession. “you... have?”
she nodded, her gaze unwavering. “yeah. but i’ve been watching how things have been going with you two, and... i just want you to know that you deserve someone who’s going to treat you better. someone who has respect for you.”
you stared at her, not sure how to respond. it wasn’t that you hadn’t noticed lena’s growing presence in your life, but hearing her say it out loud, admitting her feelings so openly, was something you hadn’t expected.
“lena, i...” you started, but the words got stuck in your throat. you didn’t know what to say. part of you was still reeling from sloan, from the hurt and confusion that came with it.
but another part of you—a part you hadn’t allowed yourself to acknowledge—felt something for lena too. something more.
she must’ve sensed your hesitation because she quickly added, “i’m not trying to pressure you or anything. i just wanted you to know how i feel. whatever happens, i’m here for you liebe. no matter what.”
her words hung in the air, heavy with meaning, and for the first time in weeks, you felt a glimmer of hope. maybe lena was right. maybe you did deserve more.
as the night went on, you found yourself relaxing in her presence, the tension from your relationship with sloan slowly easing away.
it was different with lena—easier, lighter. and when she walked you back to your apartment later that night, there was a moment where she hesitated, standing on the doorstep, her eyes flicking to your lips.
you could’ve kissed her. part of you wanted to.
“thanks for tonight,” you whispered, your voice soft.
lena smiled, her expression gentle. “anytime, y/n. i’m always here for you.”
something in the air had shifted after she said that, leaving only the quiet between you two.
lena was standing just a little too close, her gaze a little too intense, and you could feel the weight of everything unsaid hanging in the space between you.
her eyes flickered down to your lips again, and for a moment, she seemed to freeze. your heart pounded in your chest as the silence stretched on, each second amplifying the tension between you both.
you couldn’t tear your gaze away from her, drawn in by the way she was looking at you, the unspoken desire clear in her eyes.
the way she cares for you, the way you’ve been burying your attraction for her. It was too much. you wanted her.
your mind was racing—everything with sloan, the mess of your relationship, how complicated it all was.
but in that moment, none of it mattered. not with lena looking at you like that.
you made the first move, your body acting on instinct before your brain could catch up.
leaning in slowly, tentatively, you closed the gap between you, your lips barely brushing hers at first.
you paused, just for a second, giving her the chance to pull away if she wanted to. but she didn’t.
the second lena kissed you back, everything else melted away. her lips met yours with a sudden intensity, all the built-up tension finally spilling over.
her hands were on you in an instant, one sliding to the back of your neck, the other finding your waist, pulling you closer as the kiss deepened.
it wasn’t gentle—not by any means. there was an urgency in the way she kissed you, and the way you kissed her. she’d been holding back for far too long, and now that the floodgates were open, there was no going back.
you responded in kind, your hands gripping the front of her hoodie, pulling her even closer as you kissed her harder, your body pressing against hers.
lena’s hand slipped under the hem of your shirt, her fingers warm against your skin as they traced the curve of your waist, making you shiver.
the feeling of her touch sent a jolt of electricity through you, your heart racing even faster. your lips moved against hers in sync, the kiss growing more heated by the second, both of you caught up in the intensity of the moment.
you broke apart for a brief second, both of you gasping for air, but the space between you barely lasted a heartbeat before lena’s lips were on yours again, even more desperate than before. her body pressed into yours, pushing you gently against the door, and you welcomed the pressure, your hands finding their way into her hair, tugging just enough to earn a quiet groan from her.
“lena,” you breathed against her lips, not even sure what you were trying to say, if anything at all. her name came out like a plea, like you were drowning in her and needed more, but didn’t know how to ask for it.
“y/n,” she murmured back, her voice low and husky, her breath hot against your skin as she kissed along your jaw, trailing down to your neck.
the sensation sent a shiver down your spine, your knees going weak as you clung to her, desperate to stay grounded in the overwhelming rush of feelings.
her hand gripped your waist tighter, holding you against her as her lips moved across your skin, finding every sensitive spot that made you gasp, your fingers tightening in her hair as you struggled to keep up with the intensity of it all.
you weren’t thinking about sloan anymore, or the complications that would come from this. all that mattered was the way lena was making you feel—the way her lips felt on yours, the way her touch set your skin on fire.
and when lena pulled back just enough to look at you, her eyes dark and filled with something raw, something intense, you knew there was no going back.
you reached your left hand behind your body, keeping your right on lena’s waist, as you unlocked the door.
pulling the taller woman inside, you didn’t think twice before taking her into your bedroom.
the sex was amazing. its been nearly 18 months since you last tine you’ve did anything, thanks to your long distance relationship.
the girl back in portland didn’t come across your mind once. just the moment between you, the girl who's sleeping in your arms, and the fact that you’ll have a flight back to the states for national duty in the morning.
