Monthly Roundup May 2024
The Impact of War on Children Worldwide
"According to Save the Children, in 2022, there were approximately 452 million children – or one in six of all children on the planet – that were living in conflict‐affected areas. As of 2024, we are witnessing unprecedented levels of attacks against children in armed conflict contexts."
“Untitled” by Bîstyek, a Winnipeg‐based Kurdish artist from Syria who fled that country at 16 years of age. Painting by Bîstyek
"The impacts of armed conflict on children are multi‐pronged and have long‐term consequences beyond the duration of the armed conflict. When children are exposed to armed conflict, denied humanitarian access, displaced from their homes and families and unable to attain education, the ramifications impact the individual child and, at the same time, impact the development of communities and economic growth while perpetuating cycles of insecurity and violence."
Gaza – children in the crossfire, lack of access to education and healthcare
Sudan – forced displacement, lack of education and food insecurity
Colombia – armed violence, recruitment of children and trafficking
"We need to reframe the way we think about and understand children’s participation and protection. Understanding and including children’s perspectives in peace and security can contribute to the empowerment of children as agents of change, bring diverse solutions to intractable problems, and help us to disrupt long‐term consequences of armed conflict that impact children’s identity, belonging and connection to family and communities. The challenge of supporting children’s engagement is not about their lack of capacity but a shortcoming in the imagination of adults to think beyond traditional approaches to peace and security. Building lasting peace and security requires a new approach that addresses the unique challenges that children face before, during and after conflict and one that recognizes that children’s perspectives and protection are at the core of our humanity."
Waiving Away the Problem: How US Presidents Have Let Countries Complicit in Child Soldiering Off the Hook
"For more than a decade, the United States has sent billions of dollars in military assistance and weapons to countries complicit in the recruitment or use of child soldiers, despite a law intended to block it. But there are concrete steps that presidents can take to enhance U.S. child soldier prevention efforts by leveraging the fierce global demand for U.S. arms and assistance."

HOW MINT LEAVES AND LEMON TREES ARE HELPING ELEPHANT CONSERVATION IN NEPAL
“There is a strong correlation between elephant habitat fragmentation and crop loss,” says Rinjan Shrestha, WWF-Canada’s leading expert on Asian species. Today, human-elephant conflict remains the number one threat to the already-small Asian elephant population in Nepal. “The answer,” says Shrestha, “is to connect and restore historical habitats for growing numbers of elephants.”
"Biological fencing, or “biofencing” — the practice of making barriers out of natural, living things — is one way to help guide Asian elephants through their natural habitat without tempting them to wander into cropland."
Bees & Elephants: Villagers in Yunnan turn to beekeeping to bolster conservation of wild Asian elephants
"In recent years, in some rural areas in Yunnan, the local governments and volunteers have been promoting industrial transformation, with beekeeping being a key project. This has not only helped achieve rural carbon reduction but also allowed villagers to work at home, reducing direct contact with elephants."

RE: Project 2025
Project 2025 proponents seem utterly incapable of thinking through the logical fall-out of their blueprint for America.
Consider the side effects of denying women the right to birth control and the right to work. American men cannot possibly fill all the jobs vacated by women and immigrants the MAGA extremists forced out of the labor force, therefore, productivity will decrease. Thus the costs of goods and services will increase, contributing to inflation. Women, forced to be stay-at-home mothers and wives, will be increasingly unable to provide food and shelter for their ever-increasing families. Households will be increasingly unable to manage food and rent. These burdens will fall disproportionately on the poor. The ranks of the poor will swell as will the rate of homelessness. (Remember, the Supreme Court has already made it a crime to be homeless.) Trust me, those MAGA Senators will shuttle their wives and daughters off to Europe or Canada for abortions. The American poor and shrinking middle class will not have that luxury.
It’s difficult to reconcile pro-life beliefs with the MAGA folks who will deny women abortions and birth control, yet they will not feed, cloth, educate, or otherwise care for children who are already in the welfare system while denying parents a minimum wage sufficient to live on.

Philippines Reduces Facebook Pages Selling Babies
Authorities in the Philippines have made substantial progress in their fight against illegal online adoption practices. The National Authority for Child Care (NACC), in collaboration with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), successfully reduced the number of Facebook pages selling babies. The crackdown, which involved a coordinated effort among various government agencies, led to a significant decrease in such illegal activities.
Filipino baby boy having his reflexes tested. Photo by Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet. Flickr.
Key Points
- The NACC, PNP, and DICT worked together to identify and take down illegal Facebook pages. - From an initial 23 pages, only 7 remain active. - Recent arrests highlight ongoing efforts to combat this crime. Recent Developments and Arrests Last week, NACC Executive Director and Undersecretary Janella Estrada confirmed the arrest of a mother in Catarman, Northern Samar. This mother sold her children, aged 1 and 2, to an undercover PNP agent for PHP30,000 each. The mother is now under police custody, and her children are being cared for at the Lingap Center in Catarman.
Efforts and Achievements
Estrada noted that ongoing collaboration with the PNP and DICT’s Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and Women and Children Protection Center (WDCC) was crucial in reducing the number of illegal Facebook pages. The NACC continues to monitor social media sites and requests the removal of such pages from Facebook, although the platform has yet to respond. Notable Achievements: - The arrest in Northern Samar demonstrates effective enforcement. - The number of monitored Facebook accounts involved in child trafficking has been significantly reduced. - Ongoing coordination with local and national authorities enhances the effectiveness of these efforts.
Upcoming Events and Initiatives
The NACC is also organizing the final two stops of the 1st National Congress on Adoption and Alternative Child Care. These events will take place in Clark, Pampanga for the North and Central Luzon clusters, and Cebu City for the Visayas cluster. The congress aims to strengthen partnerships with local government units (LGUs) and enhance the implementation of adoption and alternative childcare programs. Congress Details: - Pampanga: June 19-20, 2024 - Cebu: June 26-27, 2024 Strengthening Local Partnerships The congress will provide an opportunity for the NACC to collaborate with 29 LGUs, which have signed a memorandum of agreement for developing foster parents. An additional 22 LGUs are currently in the process of signing agreements. These initiatives aim to bolster the Philippine Foster Care Program and ensure the protection and welfare of children. Foster Care Program: - 216 LGUs have participated. - Significant participation from mayors across Mindanao, Metro Manila, and South Luzon.

Protecting Vulnerable Children
NACC’s efforts are part of a broader mission to safeguard and protect the rights and welfare of vulnerable Filipino children. The agency, created under the Department of Social Welfare and Development, assumed responsibilities from the Inter-Country Adoption Board and other agencies under Republic Act 11642, signed by former President Rodrigo Duterte on January 6, 2022. Key Statistics: - Foster Children Served (2023): 1,618 - Adoption and Alternative Child Care Week: Celebrated every second week of June The Takeaway The NACC, PNP, and DICT's coordinated actions have made significant strides in combating illegal online child trafficking in the Philippines. Through continued vigilance, enforcement, and collaboration, these efforts aim to create a safer environment for the nation’s most vulnerable children. Sources: THX News & Philippine News Agency. EasyJet, a leading European budget airline, and UNICEF, the world's leading children's organization, have joined forces once again. This renewed partnership focuses on a critical mission: ensuring all children have access to quality education by 2030. The 'Every Child Can Fly' campaign takes flight, aiming to raise vital funds and empower millions of children around the globe. A Cause Worth Celebrating: The 'Every Child Can Fly' Campaign The 'Every Child Can Fly' campaign takes center stage as easyJet and UNICEF embark on a new chapter in their decade-long partnership. This initiative raises crucial funds to support UNICEF's education programs, specifically targeting primary and lower secondary education. The campaign aims to contribute to UNICEF's ambitious goals: easyJet and UNICEF Launch Providing access to learning opportunities for 114 million children worldwide. Equipping 148.6 million children with the tools needed for digital education. The campaign coincides perfectly with the busy Easter holiday period. During this time, easyJet expects to fly over five million passengers across its network. These passengers will have the opportunity to donate directly onboard their flights, contributing to the 'Every Child Can Fly' campaign and supporting UNICEF's vital work in education. The Alarming Reality: A Global Learning Crisis The need for quality education has never been greater. Statistics paint a concerning picture: in 2022, a staggering 70% of 10-year-olds in low- and middle-income countries could not read and understand simple text. This figure has worsened by a significant 13% since the disruptions caused by COVID-19 school closures. UNICEF's comprehensive education roadmap tackles this global learning crisis head-on. Their focus lies in ensuring all children have the right to quality education, particularly during emergencies. The 'Every Child Can Fly' campaign serves as a vital fundraising effort, aiming to support UNICEF's vision of achieving universal education for all children by 2030. Quotes Highlighting the Importance of Partnership Johan Lundgren, CEO of easyJet, expressed the company's pride in launching the 'Every Child Can Fly' campaign. He emphasized the impact of this partnership, stating it will "support the delivery of impactful programs to help children shape their future," while highlighting UNICEF's crucial role in protecting children during emergencies. Lundgren further acknowledged the decade-long partnership between easyJet and UNICEF, commending "customers and crew" for raising nearly £17 million onboard flights over the years. He concluded by expressing gratitude to customers who choose to donate, recognizing their generosity in making a real difference for millions of children worldwide. Jon Sparkes, Chief Executive at The UK National Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK), addressed the growing learning crisis impacting children worldwide. He highlighted the alarming statistic that only 30% of 10-year-olds in low- and middle-income countries can read a simple sentence. Sparkes emphasized the urgent need to protect children and their futures. Expressing gratitude to partners like easyJet, Sparkes acknowledged UNICEF's tireless work in supporting children and developing innovative programs that enable them to access their right to learn. He concluded by thanking easyJet for their continued commitment to children and looked forward to the partnership's future. A Decade of Impact: EasyJet and UNICEF's Enduring Partnership Since the initial partnership formed in 2012, easyJet customers and cabin crew have collectively raised nearly £17 million for UNICEF appeals. These funds have enabled UNICEF to protect millions of children around the world from diseases and ensure their safety during emergencies. Notable contributions include: Over £400,000 for children and families affected by the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria in 2023. These funds supported UNICEF's critical work in the region. A record-breaking £616,000 was raised in a single month specifically for UNICEF's Ukraine appeal. The significant contributions from easyJet customers have empowered UNICEF to reach over 169 million children, helping them develop essential skills and build brighter futures. Furthermore, since 2018, fundraising has totaled £2.7 million, directly supporting UNICEF's efforts to provide every child with access to learning opportunities. This encompasses providing essential educational materials like textbooks and classroom kits to more than 137 million children, ensuring they can continue learning even amidst conflict. Building a Brighter Future: The Road Ahead The 'Every Child Can Fly' campaign and the expanded partnership between easyJet and UNICEF mark a significant step towards achieving universal education by 2030. Looking ahead, several key areas highlight the collaborative efforts that will shape the future of this initiative: Empowering EasyJet Customers: Onboard donations will remain a cornerstone of the campaign. EasyJet will continue to provide passengers with the opportunity to contribute directly to their flights. These donations will directly support UNICEF's education programs. Employee Engagement: easyJet recognizes the power of a dedicated workforce. The airline will likely continue to engage its employees in fundraising activities and educational initiatives that raise awareness about the global learning crisis. Corporate Social Responsibility: EasyJet's commitment to corporate social responsibility extends beyond education. The airline may explore additional initiatives that support UNICEF's broader mission of protecting children's rights and well-being. Advocacy Efforts: Both easyJet and UNICEF can leverage their platforms to advocate for policies that prioritize education, particularly in developing countries. This advocacy can contribute to systemic change and create a more equitable learning environment on a global scale. The Power of Partnership: A Collective Effort for Change The 'Every Child Can Fly' campaign exemplifies the transformative power of collaboration. By joining forces, easyJet and UNICEF can significantly impact the lives of millions of children around the world. Through continued fundraising efforts, educational initiatives, and advocacy, this partnership paves the way for a brighter future where every child has the opportunity to access quality education and soar toward their full potential.
