I love Izutsumi. She's got a great design, she's a fun addition to the main party, she adds some new tension, and she's honestly one of the reasons I read dungeon meshi in the first place. I mean, "the most cat to ever girl" is an extremely appealing hook to anyone who loves cats and girls (me, I love cats and girls).
However, while I have always liked Izutsumi, I finished the story kind of feeling like I didn't really get her. I felt like I had a decent grasp on her character an character arc (she's a traumatized teen given space to feel safe and open up, and because of that she realizes that she can't grow without letting go of the coping mechanisms she once needed). But I didn't feel like I really understood her role in the story as a whole.
She follows the group of her own accord, after a coincidental meeting and a misunderstanding of what they can do for her. She's never super invested in saving Falin, at least not compared to the rest of the group. Though they do help her escape Maizuru's shackles, and are clearly good for her in general, she doesn't really have a healing Moment with the group the way that Senshi does with the hippogriff soup.
And yet, she gets an entire chapter, the third-to-last chapter, dedicated to exploring her growth and future. She's the one who frames much of the falling action, who lets us check in with everyone. She's the one who helps talk Laios into accepting his role as king. She may join the story part way through, but she is there for most of it. So Izutsumi! What's your deal!?
Well, I think I've come up with an answer, at least for myself, that I really like. Two of them, even! Though they both really work together to form the overall point - Izutsumi is the character that most helps the story face towards the future. Here's why I think that.
So the first of these "ah-ha" moments was when I realized that Izutsumi really is the best supporting evidence for Laios' point about the good things that wouldn't have happened if Falin hadn't died.
If Falin hadn't been eaten by the dragon, Izutsumi probably would still be a slave. It was because of Shuro and Laios' parties both being in the dungeon to rescue Falin, as well as Marcille's use of ancient magic in the resurrection, that she got the chance to escape. None of that would have been the case if Falin hadn't died. Shuro wouldn't have separated from the group and joined up with his retainers, Marcille wouldn't have revealed her knowledge of ancient magic, and Izutsumi never would have even met any of them. They are only part of her life because of Falin's death.
Though this isn't explicitly pointed out by Laios or Izutsumi in the scene, I do think you can very much feel the presence of it. For one, when Marcille reflects on the journey and how much it made her realize she didn't want to lose everyone, her relationship with Izutsumi is prominent:
It's the main original group at the top and center, but when you read it right to left, itâs Izutsumi and Marcille who might catch your eye first. And it's specifically Marcille and Izutsumi's relationship on display here, not just Izutsumi's presence in the group in general.
Also, after Laios' statement about how none of their adventure would have happened without Falin dying, it is Izutsumi who gets the final word:
Izutsumi is also the one here who is the most forward-facing. Chilchuck is trying to correct Laios, Senshi is focused on the immediate future, and Izutsumi is talking about her new goal.
And I want to talk about that goal in general as well, because itâs also interesting how it comes up. In that moment, everyone is trying to remind Marcille of her less destructive desires - to eat food, to share it with them, and to meet Chilchuck's family. All of which are previously established, existing desires. When prompted by Chilchuck to join in, however, Izutsumi offers something new:
That's interesting, isn't it? It's kind of funny, of course, to see her rambling on about a completely new thing, her own personal motive, in the middle of everyone working together to reach out to Marcille. Izutsumi doesn't even know who Yaad is! But at the same time, itâs kind of meaningful. Amidst the focus on desires that everyone already had, she adds a completely new one to the mix. Itâs even the final bridge that lets Laios reach Marcille.
It is, in fact, even an idea that comes back later to help out another lord of the dungeon. The idea of finding new goals and feeling new desires... this is exactly how Kabru reaches out to Mithrun, after the Winged Lion is gone
So yeah, Izutsumi's presence here, both in what she's actively choosing to say as well as what she represents of the consequences of Falin's death, supports the story's ideas of moving forward. Of accepting the past, and finding new reasons to live.
Which is all really good, and that alone works pretty well as an answer to what Izutsumi's role in the story is.
But oh, oh. There's more. Something I realized after having thought of all this, because I still couldn't let go of the feeling that there was still something I was missing.
And as I reviewed the things I loved about Izutsumi - her sometimes unhealthy ways of coping with trauma, her struggles with isolation, her skill with fighting, her selfishness contrasted with the ways she grows to care for and protect the group, her perpetually guarded nature, born from the seeming impossibility of ever fitting in or finding a safe place to just be herself - I realized something.
Izutsumi...
is a foil to Falin.
Where Falin copes with isolation and trauma by being eternally caring and struggling to say no to people, Izutsumi copes by constantly saying no to everything she can. Falin is often considered selfless, but does have selfish desires that she canât easily express until a moment of crisis. Izutsumi is delightfully selfish, but chooses to stick by her friends when they need her. They are both transformed, against their will, into partly monstrous hybrids, and they both will have to live with that - there is no undoing what has been done to them.
Falin anchors the group in the past. Izutsumi pulls them towards the future. Neither would find freedom without the other - it is Falin's death that leads to Izutsumi joining the party, and likewise, it is Izutsumi who inspires the realization of how they can save Falin.
And Falin is her future, as much as Izutsumi is Falin's. Both learn to be a little more like each other, even though they never meet. Falin gets a little more selfish. Izutsumi gets a little more willing to bend.
In this context, I feel like I have finally started to understand just how important Izutsumi is to the story. She is a proof that they cannot just go back, and she is a clawed, happy-to-scratch-anyone-who-pisses-her-off reminder, at that. In any conversation about what the group wishes would have happened with Falin, she cannot be ignored or brushed aside.
She is a reminder that, even in the midst of a tragedy so big it feels like a shadow you will never escape, you have yet to met all the people you will love. Hell, some of those people might even be catgirls. We should all be so lucky.

Alright, so hear me out
(this is another long one. Like. Seriously. It has 2.6k words.)
*yes, I edited this like 5 mins after I posted it just to add some more, oops
Post cannon Labru where Laios tries to help Kabru regain weight
TW: ED, Body Dysmorphia, Fat-phobia, Gender Dysphoria
It turns out to he a huge body image thing. Like Kabru develops a bit of an ED after he gains his weight back and tries to stay "the perfect weight" and major body dysmorphia. But! It's very sweet because hand feeding, of course, and self-acceptance.
I imagine Kabru's blue eyes get brought up when Laios is like "oh, you don't like that about yourself? :( you're so wonderful! What else could you possibly not like! Surely not those eyes ^^" or something
Plus! I'm 98% sure that Laios gains some weight post cannon, so his wrestler build gets softer, which, yay! We love that here! But this comes with its positives and negatives. (Dont he scared by how big the negative paragraph is)
Positive: Kabru has an example of having a healthy relationship with yourself and your body
Negatives (and hold on) TW btw: at a certain point of Kabru's weight gain/ body acceptance journey, where he gets obsessed with keeping "the perfect body" and does everything in his power not to gain anymore, his own twisted view of himself spills over to Laios. He starts to view Laios as a sort of slob or careless person because he gained weight after the dungeon and gained an extra 5-ish pounds while helping Kabru gain. Because Laios can and will encourage Kabru to eat by eating with him with a smile on his face.
What if someone finds out about Kabru's purging?
Yes, Kabru has purged a few times while he was at his lowest. And no, Laios doesn't catch him in the act. He doesn't know until someone tells him about it. Kabru just keeps it to himself with a tinge of guilt. Someone else finds out. I can't decide who yet, but if it were:
Chilchuck - he'd be familiar with his topic because one of his daughters went through the same thing. He keeps secret as per Kabru's request but gives to Kabru straight. He tells him vomiting hat much rots your teeth and only has negative impacts in the future. With Chil being big and tall for his race's standards and him canonically watching his own weight, he talks Kabru through this whole body image thing. Maybe not in the exact way Kabru wants, but in the way he needs
Senshi - he's SO against this. He tries to father Kabru, but his own lack of understanding for why Labru feels this way gets in the way of progress. He urges Kabru to eat and tells Laios what's goin on in hopes of figuring out what all of this is about, accidentally spilling the beans and leading to conflict between Laios and Kabru
Marcille - she doesn't really get the ED thing, but she gets not liking your body (since she never fit in with her "age group" while growing up and wished she physically presented like them). She also tells Kabru that throwing up rots his teeth and says it's bad for your mana and junk. Shes very offput by this whole thing, but she tries. She doesn't tell Laios...on purpose. (Falin also finds out becuase the guilt Marcille has from telling that secret ears her alive)
Falin - my girl does NOT understand. But she's here to empathize. She ends up being huge in Kabru's healing journey. She tries to check in on bim every now and then and uses her own transformation to promote body acceptance
Izutsumi - she doesn't know what to do. She's 17 goddamn it. So when she hears Kabru throwing up she just assumes he's sick, but when she keeps hearing it she gets a little stressed about him. She goes "he's just weird" and mentions it in conversation to someone else, most likely Marcille (which probably led to Marcille finding out in the earlier paragraph)
Mickbell...somehow - is like "dude wtf" and tells Rin about it since he knows there close. He's worried, yeah, but he doesn't think its really his problem. Especially since the two fo them aren't close like that.
Kuro - he finds out and tells Rin as well, he also tells Kabru that he looks fine. He mentions it to Mickbell, yeah, but in a "Will he be okay? :(" way
Rin - devastated. She initially gives Kabru a hard talk...which makes him worse, but hey! She tried. Rin then thinks its becuase of the shame of dying many times and tries to comfort Kabru again. Doesn't work. She tries to get him to eat the things he likes. He eats them, but she can sense the guilt from Kabru. They then have a heart to heart becuase Rin can't stand to see her best friend suffer like this and assures him that he looks fine as often as he needs
Holm - he takes a simular approach as Falin but gets a little more involved. He understands it on paper, but can't image what actually having these issues is like. Yes, he also informs Rin and is the one that told her to try to speak to Kabru in a less...prickly manner about this touchy subject
Daya - She doesnt realise what Kabru was trying to achieve by puking. So she just advises him not to do so and tells Rin about the strange behavior.
How does this affect non-platonic Labru?
Easy!
Well for starters! If they were boning before, they aren't now LMAO
Partly because of Kabru's own body image being trash and his attraction to Laios (temporarily) going to shit after Laios gained some weight to encourage Kabru. Damn that internalized fat-phobia. Neither one of them seems to have a clue what's going on. Let word, seems.
Kabru knows his view of Laios just isn't the same, but he doesn't let it be known that he's aware of this.
Does he feel bad? Yeah. But he only feels bad because he doesn't feel bad. He feels as though he's a shitty boyfriend for harboring such disgust for his partner's figure
Laios catches Kabru stealing glances at himself in the mirror. Staring just a little too long. Laios deduces that Kabru's feeling a little self-conscious after some hard thought.
So, of course, he makes sure to be extra careful about his words. He'd totally be like that one meme (which I can't find) that goes: "damn girl, that ass is wide" "what??" "I didn't want to say fat and trigger your eating disorders :/"
Plus, on the not boning thing, they're busy. You got a king and his advisor, they're not gonna be cranking it up every night! They simply sleep together, in a literal sense most nights anyways, so more sleep isn't anything bad
Additionally, I don't believe Laios has a high sex drive at all. (I personally think he's on the asexual spectrum, maybe because I'm ace, but still)
Kabru won't initiate a thing at the moment, it's up to Laio's sporadic desires to get things going. (It never gets going)
What if Laios discovers Kabru's feelings towards him and the purging?
He's hurt, simply put. He can't understand why Kabru dislikes his body, Laios can't understand why his own body would be such a turn off now.
In the non-platonic vers Laios tries to become "sexy" again. ....He fails horribly and ends up making a fool out if himself. At first he's like, "well monsters do this to attract mates" right after he feels as though he needs to inprove upon himself. Then he goes "no... Kabru isnt a monster, and im not either (unfortunately)"
He pushes that silly thought aside and tries to find out *why* Kabru is turned off by his looks now. His face? No.. His hair? Just got it cut. His figure? ...but why?
Laios goes right up to Kabru and confronts him about it. Kabru being the slippery bitch that he is denies it and goes "lol wtf haha! I luv u bae and there's nothing wrong with u!! ur so sexy and hot haha..."
This, inevitably, confused the shit out of Laios and he asks for honesty. Kabrus actions aren't exactly aligning with his words, and something needs to he done.
[Okay, let's be real here. If Kabru didn't want Laios to know how he felt, Laios' ass would NOT know lmao. This is just for the bit]
Now the purging? Laios is like "dude what? :(" he doesn't understand it. Nope. Not at all. He tires to he supportive, but he really doesn't know what to do with this. It's not like there's a bulimia monster, so he has no real frame of reference.
He's all "but you look fine how you are :(" and "I like the weight on you!" or even "did you know that [this species of monster] finds fat attractive? ,:D"
He means so so well, and Karbu knows it. Laios really is just a dog of a man.
Laios also tries to get Kabru to promise to stop. We know how that went. Karbu agreeing just to do it behind Laios' back because he knows Laios won't find out. He'll cut back on it, yeah, but he has his weak moments.
Eventually, Laios makes sure to only have Kabru serve his favorite meals. That should keep him from puking it up! And Karbu stops after a while. But only because his health is on the decline.
What else?
Two words: hand. feeding.
Kabru throws up? He gets his favorite meals so he won't. Kabru keeps checking his figure? Less mirrors in the caslte and more compliments. Kabru not eating enough or skipping meals? Simple. Laios makes sure he eats.
And how? A little less of Laios sensually slipping a fork full of decedent chocolate cake past Kabru's lips and a little more than a simple "here comes the airplane"
It starts off as Laios seeing Kabru taking smaller bites and being like "oh! Let me show you how to fill your fork! ^^" and then him taking Kabru's fork, impaling a bunch of assorted foods onto said fork, then handing it back to Kabru.
Then it sort of devolved (...evolved?) Into Kabru begrudgingly letting Laios feed him like a toddler while no one else ot looking. My boy Kabru does NOT know how to say no to this autistic man properly.
Laios was like "would it help if I just fed you?" And karbu replied something like "haha! It just might!" And of course Laios did not pick up on that God level sarcasm and went "cool, Let's try it then" and Kabru, wanting to appease Laios said "cool!". Bro was punching air.
(Yes, Laios said stuff like "good job buddy!" "You're doing so well!" "Its tasty, right?" Almost every bite)
In the non-platonic world, Laios would have Karbu sit ever so close to him as he was fed, maybe even in his lap. And of course Karbu would get a peck on the cheek after every bite. And the whole process may or may not turn Laios on. Especially when they're dining on monster. Whoops.
....anything else?
This all ties in with the absurd standards that was set for Karbu and the insecurities he hides within himself.
The whole blue-eye-spawn-of-a-demon thing was already enough for him. But being raised by that moody ass elf was a whole nother thing.
Milsiril, his adoptive elf mom, raises children like she has a monopoly in daycares. She's a serial foster fr. All them damn kids. Raising them like pets becuase you want something to love and depend on you. (I love Milsiril btw)
Anyways.
Kabru was his mom's favorite since his features were unique. Im talkin big bright blue eyes contrasting with rich dark skin, in particular. Plus, he was so sociable! All of his siblings looked up to him in one way or another. He was the star child.
And, you know that thing about elves being twinks, right? When ever Milsiril would check up on Karbu's health, she would use this old elven chart depicting the "average/desirable/suggested" height, weight, and muscle tone for diffrent short-lived races at diffrent ages/stages of life.
Safe to say these charts and texts were based off of elven standards, so everyone was thought to be slimmer, lighter, and more toned than normal. Plus, they're old lol. Instead of updating her charts and buying some from the diffrent cultures and races, she keeps her old one becuase she legit just forgets to replace it and hasn't had any "major problems" while raising her kids with that information so she doesn't think to change it.
What in trying to say is!
Kabru was raised with unrealistic body goals, and when he used to deviate from those arbitrary statistics during childhood he'd be put on diets and stuff.
Also, What if Kabru was transmasc?
Especially when he was a teen, even gaining a little wait made him go nuts. He couldn't get the words "unhealthy" out of his head and started associating it with the word "fat". His mind likes to play tricks on him when he's in the mirror. Exaggerating his figure and making him panic.
So! When he was sick and tired after that weird ass dungeon trip that changed his whole world and he came back to find himself thin as a pin, he tweaked.
He logically hated it because it was unhealthy, but a part of him was satisfied. With the added stress of becoming a Kings advisor, he started to crack under the pressure, manifesting in an obsession with himself. When he started to gain weight back he was brought right back to those check ups he had with Milsiril and those 2, maybe 3 times he was put onto diets in his youth. He really feared he was getting fat and he would just stare into the mirror and feel his flesh beneath his fingertips, searching for some sort of confirmation. All he felt was a bit of a squish, a bit of a give, and that's all he needed.
It was too much for him. His body was wrecked in his eyes. He's supposed to he fit and lean and thin and perfect. How could that be perfect? He looks in the mirror in his private study, wasting the time he could've been spending planning new city infrastructure or working out the kinks in trade. But no. He's here, in his dimly lit room, looking at how imperfect he's become in his eyes. How unhealthy he is his mom's eyes. How disgusting he is in his birth mothers eyes.
He had to fix it. The wound rubs deep, dar past the dermis. And, I guess, much like other wounds that cut a chasm into the skin, you don't really feel it once it severs your nerves. You don't really notice until you see the big, gaping, bleeding, notch where you used to be.
Lol anyways
Whoo boy. He is in hell. He feels like gaining weight makes him look "softer" and more feminine. He hates it, yes. But he tries his best not to let it effect his wardrobe. This whole weight journey really rehydrated his gender dysphoria.
He's used to looking a little androgynous, but with his new weight going to his stomach, hips, and thighs, he just feels as though his silhouette is becoming more girly.
Kabru is found training and working out more. Anything to get his body more boxy again.
He spends more time making sure he looks presentable. Even waking up a little earlier to ensure he vouge cover ready. (Well, I mean, as vouge ready as perpetual business casual can be)
And how does it end?
It takes some time, but Kabru heals. He's 10 pounds heavier than when we were first introduced to him, but he doesn't mind anymore.
It was a long journey full of all sorts of denail and shame, but he got there.
He's still the Light Yagami coded perfect chivalrous boy. He always has been. And Laios loves him all the same. Platonically or not.
Laios was essential in Karbu learning to let go of those impossible ideal and unreachable standards. Laios does not give a fuck afterall, he thinks all human bodies are unintresting beautiful! That dude does not judge. Rember him talking about the orc women in one of the monster tidbit sections? He's about body acceptance and neutrality.
Kabru grew to love his body, not just tolderate it or like it because someone else does. And if it tickles you, he liked the extra pounds Laios gained in the end, too. And if you're here for non-platonic Labru, then Laios may have became a bit of a feeder and has a tiiiiny food kink. Plus, Laios is a huge fan of the squish and Kabru likes how warm Laios is.
I just want to add this in here, also hecuase ive seen it before and i agree, but Laios seems like the type to give dutch ovens. He shows love like a big brother and its horrible (affectionate). This passes Karbu off SO BAD and it's hilarious. He has to sit down and have a very direct and serious talk about "getting too comfortable". And Laios would sit there the entire time like a sad dog and nod along.
Kabru and Laios also wrestle. No debate. They do it to spar, Laios does it for fun, Kabru does it to make Laios shut up. It's great!
Sorry this took so long lmao,, I legit just kept forgetting to write this
This was just word vomit. I've lost the plot somewhere along the way, I fear

Hello! I'd like request a Chilchuck scenario or hcs, whatever works best! (Or both kanfkanfj) Reader is a tall-man and GN.
The reader told him once about how they liked how he looked when he didn't shave, and he just basically doesn't shave for a hot minute because of it. And he actually almost tries to make himself "look better" by taking care to not stain his clothes and brush his hair or something, all because he's crushing on reader. He won't say it out loud unless pressured to, but he desperately wants to make a good impression on them.
Reader ends up asking him why he's taking care of his appearance all of the sudden, and he basically admits he's into them and so on-
(I'm craving fluff so hard, please please please make it as tooth rotting as you can,,,)
Hi anon!! I loved your request so much! I'm sorry this took so long to post, but I hope you like it.
I see you asked for a side of extra fluff, so I made sure to made this as cute as I could right now! đđ
(The last part is based off something I can't help but do when my boyfriend has a beard, so shout-out to my boyfriend for the inspiration lol)
"Love makes you act a bit stupid"
[Chilchuck Tims x gn!reader]
Warnings: none - fluff
One comment. That's all it took for him to leave his beard grow, even if just a little, after that one time where (y/n) had mentioned they liked how he looked when he had left his beard grow before shaving it all off again. Usually, it took a long while for his beard to show, half-ling's were known for having mostly "baby faces" so Chilchuck didn't really need to shave that often. But that time when they did catch a glimpse of his face with a little bit of hair growth, they couldn't help but compliment him.
It made his heart flutter, to be honest. No one really had commented about his beard before, so the comment really stuck out to him, replaying in his mind sometimes even in the middle of battle (which was very distracting).
He began to take care of his looks more than he usually did before. Always making sure his hair looked nice and tidy in case (y/n) wanted to run their fingers though it, or getting overly upset if he ever stained his clothes in the slightest when he ate.
This change in behavior didn't go unnoticed by the members of the party, much less to (y/n), who looked amused every time he fussed over the slightest stain on his shirt or scarf. They noticed, as the weeks in the dungeon went by, that the area around his chin was getting a bit darker. Maybe it was a bit or dirt. Or was it his beard again?
The days kept passing, and eventually (y/n) found the answer to that question. Chilchuck had been letting his beard grow, and what was even weirder, he didn't seem interested on shaving it this time.
Approaching him from behind as everyone walked, they tugged softly at his scarf, definitely catching his attention as he looked around, and finally up to find their face.â Hey, can I talk to you?â of course you could, anytime was all he wanted to say, but he swallowed it down along with the light feeling of embarrassment he began feeling, and composed himself.
âOf course... but don't tug at my scarf like that again, I'm not a childâ he faked indignation, but inside he wanted them to do it as many times as they wanted. Only they were allowed to, but if they kept doing it he'd just be a flustered mess everytime, so it was best to just pretend he hated it. For now.
(y/n) chuckled, letting go of the fabric as they began to walk side by side, falling slightly behind from the rest of the group.â Are you letting your beard grow?â they pointed at his chin, and his eyes widened softly. They really had noticed?
He cleared his throat before speakingâ wâwell, yeah, I am. Why do you ask?â he answered, shifting his gaze somewhere else.
â Is it because I said you looked good that time you were shaving it off?â (y/n) asked, and he swore he could hear the amusement in their voice.
He placed his arms behind his neck, looking towards them again, getting ready to answer when he was cut off by them once againâ And I swear, all of us have noticed you fuss over your appearance more than usual. Are you trying to impress someone?â God was it that obvious? he bit his lip, embarrassment flowing through him, this time his cheeks definitely burning up.
âNâno! What makes you think that? Maybe I just want to look better for myself!â he protested, unable to hide the fact his face was getting redder by the second.
They chuckledâ come on, you're not fooling anybody Chil, who's the lucky one?â they wanted to know, but at the same time, they didn't. There were very slim chances it was them, after all. Maybe it was for Marcille? Senshi? God, maybe even Laios for all they knew! They would be heartbroken if it was anyone else but them, but they weren't about to let their feelings get in the way of Chilchuck's happiness.
He stared at them, stopping in their tracks as the group kept getting further and further away.â CâChil, the rest, we gotta catch upâ they were about to start running towards the rest when the half-foot suddenly grabbed their hand, stopping them from doing so.â What are you doing?! We'll fall behind and get lost!â they blurted, looking down at him.
âWell it wouldn't be that different from getting lost in your eyesâ he hadn't meant to say that. Why was he flirting all of a sudden?!
He began to panic, stuttering as he tried to come up with an excuse for whatever what he just said was.
âWow... didn't know you were like that...â (y/n) chuckled, feeling embarrassed already but trying not to let that show.â So, um... who's the lucky one who's got you acting like this?â he deadpanned. Were they serious?
âAre you joking?â he raised an eyebrow, still not letting go of their hand.â I literally justâ ugh... (y/n)â they were doing this on purpose. They had to be.
They fell silent for a moment as he took in a deep breath, preparing himself for whatever outcome was next after this.â You are. You've got me acting all... stupid. Fussing when I stain my clothes, making sure I'm clean and tidy, gods! I even let my beard grow because of what you said!â he confessed, the grip on their hand tightening as he looked up at them, determined to get his feelings across clearly.
Now it was time for (y/n) to blush.â You're jokingâ that couldn't be right. Chilchuck liked them?â Bâbut why me? I've got nothing special!â he sighed, letting go of their hand.
â You're... very caring towards me, to be honestâ he wanted the earth to swallow him. You'd think that after a wife and three kids, a confession would be easy. But not for him it seemed.â You're beautiful. Gorgeous even goddammit. Every time you compliment me I get all... fuzzy inside, and I feel like I just want to kiss you right then and there. It's not fair you make me this nervous and you don't even know it!â he stomped his foot on the ground, looking down at it.â Perhaps you don't feel the same way butâ! â.
(y/n) grabbed his face softly, tilting his head up and making him look up at themâ Woah, woah, hold your horses, who said I don't like you?â another silent pause.
So it was reciprocated?
Chilchuck had a dumbfounded look written all over his face. His eyes seemed brighter and the way his blush spread across his pretty face guided their gaze down to his thin, soft lips. (y/n) had to bend down slightly to look at Chilchuck closely, still holding his face in their hands. The gap between their faces closed as they pulled him into a kiss. A sweet and slow moment as Chilchuck raised one arm to place one of his hands over theirs, standing on his tiptoes to reach better for the kiss.
Chilchuck stared into their eyes, unable to look awayâ so you mean... I'm notâ the only one...?â he mumbled. They were so focused on each other they hadn't noticed the party had walked back to look for them once they had noticed they weren't following anymore and were now looking at the scene from a few feet away, as they held their breaths to not interrupt.â Hold on, what the hell do you see in me?!â he couldn't believe it, his heart was leaping around his chest with joy but it was all so sudden and it seemed so surreal too. Maybe this was all a dream...
They sighed, looking to the sideâ What's there not to like, Chilchuck? You're just so... coolâ his ears must've been deceiving him, he thought, buy they continuedâ You try your best to express your feelings despite the fact it can be hard for you at times, and that shows just how much you care, even if you say otherwise. You're always so funny and witty when you tease tooâ they couldn't help but chuckle, their eyes finding his once again.
Pulling away after a moment, they both stared at each other, smiling incredulously.â So... what was that about getting lost in my eyes?â (y/n) tried to tease him, but failed, as he just chuckled and pulled them in for another sweet kiss.
âI'll tell you later. I have plenty of opportunities to openly flirt with you nowâ he couldn't help but tease them back.
The group cheered softly from afar, catching their attention and making them take a step back, creating some distance between them.
Blushing furiously, Chilchuck raised his fist and began protestingâ How long have you been standing there?! Don't you know to give people some privacy!?â everyone began apologizing despite finding his reaction somewhat funny and endearing.
(y/n) reached a hand down to his face and began scratching his beard, giggling. From everyone's perspective, the gesture looked just like a puppy getting scratched by their owner.â Lâlove! Don't do that in front of everyone!â Chilchuck didn't know whether to protest and yell at the rest of the party, or protest against them scratching his beard like a dog's. It felt nice but why did you have to do it in front of everyone, and even worse now?!
He ended just pouting and enjoying the attention as he stood there, an embarrassed mess as he crossed his arms and the rest of the party decided to settle down by a corner and call it a day.

Rating Dungeon Meshi Characters Based on How Well They Can Take Care of Me When I'm Sick
Scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best. Precaution I have bias for women.
Laios - 7/10 He'll definitely try his best, but he's not very good at it. Achieves the bare minimum of keeping me fed and making sure I take my meds, but most of the time he wouldn't really know what to do to help more. As I drift in and out of consciousness, I see him staring at me with his autism eyes through the gap of my door.
Falin - 9/10 Practically my bedside nurse. Checks my temperature every so often, makes sure to keep my forehead cool. She makes it possible for me to be glad I'm sick, though I am not sure if she knows how to cook. Fortunately, too ill to gaf. Also it's Falin.
Marcille - 9/10 She will think I am dying and because of this she's desperate to help me recover. Heh. I love the attention. But I think. I THINK. she may not know what she is doing about a quarter of the time. She'll read the instructions on my meds like 5 times before giving it to me. She'll research what kind of foods is good for speedy recovery. She'll forget to wring the cold rag before putting it on my head, and every time I fall asleep she thinks I passed away.
Chilchuck - 6/10 Like my dad. "Don't forget to take your meds." Feeds me porridge for lunch and dinner. I don't see his face like the whole day, but I'll be unsure if it's because he's purposely checking in on me when I'm knocked out or he just doesn't want to bother me at all. I can't ask, because he wouldn't answer honestly (he's embarrassed).
Senshi - 8/10 I feel like he's gonna be like my mom and feed me herbal medicine and home remedies. My recovery will be slightly slower, but I'll recover. I will be eating soooo good, 'cause he'll definitely put a spin on every meal meant to help me recover. He sits by my bedside and does his own thang while I sleep, or talk about what he put in my food as like a bedtime story. When he goes to the toilet, I cry.
Toshiro (without his retainers [not including Izutsumi]) - 4/10 Porridge is simple enough to make, I think he is capable of that at the very least. I think he'd make sure I drink enough water, and will ask if I've taken my meds yet. But that's all his efforts and capabilities. I wouldn't blame him. He wears a mask when he enters my room.
Toshiro (with his retainers) - 9/10 Maizuru alone bumped the score by three points because she'll make sure to help Toshiro keep me well fed. But because she's only helping me for Toshiro, she wouldn't go all out with the care. It's okay, their company is enough. I will most likely think I died and went to heaven. They all are wearing masks under Maizuru's orderâdon't want them catching it and spreading it to Toshiro.
Izutsumi - 2/10 It may be over for me. But if she sleeps at the foot of my bed the entire time and gets me packaged food and water when I ask, I'll live.
Namari - 8/10 Idk. Like! Idk! I think she's gonna be like Laios about it, like she really tries her best, but she's unsure. She's like a combo of Laios and Chilchuckâshe can make me food and make sure I take my meds, but I would hardly see her throughout the day. Sometimes she'll come in and ask if I need anything, and if I ask her to stay she'll linger at the doorway then step inside. When I wake up, she may be gone.
Kabru - 7/10 I kinda...don't want him here.....like....I like his face and everything, but I feel. scared. at the thought of being sick and him taking care of me. Might be the blue eyes. Nevertheless, he's able to make sure I don't get worse. He can cook and will help me take my meds, put a cool rag over my forehead, and keep me company until I fall asleep. "I guess you owe me one!" he'll laugh lightly as my fever-fried brain stares at him, and I won't know if he's serious until he tells me so.
Mithrun - 1/10 I am Gone but also he's very attractive so I think I'll die happy.

Dungeon Meshi Liveblog: Some Much-Needed Downtime TBH
ok I kinda read these species-swap chapters quickly without commenting 2 nights ago bc I REALLY wanted to catch up to the show, and honestly I didn't have much to say? It was a fun showcase of some different species talents, and introduced multiple fun problems for the characters to solve [takes notes in DM]. But it didn't seem to move either plot or characters forward much. Some notes:
Honestly it's surprising that there's only been 1 count of food poisoning so far, when they're trying SO MANY new things. One must credit Senshi's cooking skills!
This might be the single funniest joke so far:
I've seen multiple posts saying Senshi's elfsona reveals him to be feminine by dwarf standards, and I'm genuinely BAFFLED by that take because it is SO obvious that Senshi's elfsona reveals him to be 1. the Hottest Man You Have Ever Met, and 2. HAIRY. We have seen 0 other elves with facial hair. I dug up that showcase of different elves and 0 of them have facial hair. In the Tolkienien lore from which all modern fantasy, or certainly this sort of fantasy, is derived, exactly 2 elves in the history of the world are said to have had facial hair. Elf!Senshi has a tiny little moustache. Elf!Senshi isn't feminine, he is the HOTTEST, HAIRIEST bear in the metaphorical gay club.
...it's possible that he's more of a himbo than we realize, though.
I don't know what's up with Kensuke and I AM worried that it's being directed by the demon. I want it to be Laios's friend so bad...
It occurs to me that "the winged lion is actually the demon at the root of all of this" is probably the biggest spoiler I've gotten, and I didn't even realize how huge a spoiler it was because I DIDN'T get spoilered for the fact that, so far as the characters know, the lion is supposed to be a helpful god. Don't play with spoilers, kids! Even if you want to read the juicy meta!
This initial fight with the gargoyles is probably my new second-favorite "Laios is really quickly analytical and problem-solving in combat" moment (the living armor fight is still #1). He sees how everyone is failing, prevents more problems as he can, realizes they can't win and puts together what pieces they need to get out. In group social dynamics, he's a mediocre leader at best, but he's a superb combat tactician.
Laios is just living in his own little after-school special, and I love him for that.
That first panel is definitely support for the theory that the 50-60yr life expectancy of "short-lived" races like tallmen, orcs, kobolds and halffeet is shorter than it should be, relative to their ages of maturity, because the long-lived races control and hold most of the resources. It's even possible that their ages of maturity SHOULD be even older, but social conditions force them to become "adults" at a younger developmental age than dwarves, gnomes and especially elves!
Panel 3 is Marcille mentally shoving Chilchuck higher on her list of Lives to Extend by Whatever Magic I Can Learn.
I love how the way they figure out that the mushrooms' effects are easily reversible is literally by thinking through the greater social worldbuilding implications of the effects.
^This is the single most Dad we've ever seen Chilchuck...topped only by that 'carry child like a football' a moment later. Actually, he yeets Marcille a LOT while tall - here, over the jump in the travel montage, with Laios to make a loop for the gargoyle...which I'm dead certain is an indication of how he physically treated his daughters. Those kids got casually, affectionately tossed like salad.
.
AND THAT'S WHAT WE CALL FRIENDSHIP.
...okay maybe I did have several thoughts about those 2 chapters.
.
"[Falin] was much tougher than I was. I hear she and our parents still write to each other" is SUCH a line for painting a picture of Laios and Falin's childhoods, and Laios's feelings on it.
.
you can keep your Kabru Wink(TM)s, I am weak only for the Laios Fond Little Smile(TM).
.
I love how Senshi is still musing on this soul = egg metaphor, and I LOVE how both times now that we've seen Laios genuinely lose his temper, it's because someone was saying "why are you just being excited about eating monsters when Falin is in danger?!", and he's snapping because he is fucking NOT dismissing his sister in favor of eating monsters, he is doing EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER to save her and it just so happens that the only plans with a smidgen of success involve leaning into eating monsters. And by trying to stop him from that, you're stopping him from saving Falin.
.
Laios, how tf do you remember the Wink? I'm 99% sure Kabru never once winked in your interactions; I WAS looking for it. Was he just exuding wink energy? (I mean...yes.)
.
The dramatic irony jokes in this chapter are on POINT. Chilchuck: "There's no way this thing still works" [tram door slams shut on his heels, cars immediately starts moving]. "You won't find a military company in the dungeon" [smash cut to Shuro, Namari and Kabru unhappily leading the Canaries into the dungeon]. Impeccable.
Stopping this one here in preparation for going nuts about implied elf-related worldbuilding in the next chapters!

We are not a pet play expert but we ARE someone who spends entirely too much time working with kink psychology. The good pet play on AO3 is sadly very thin on the ground and we tend to make it harder for ourself by going exclusively for fandoms who have like five authors maximum so we can't offer recommendations but to be quite honest Laios feels like the kind of guy who'd really enjoy a day collar or something similar in that it would give him, like, a physical reminder of being, in some way, wanted, and a tactile sense of connection. Any sort of distinct accessory that serves as a subtle "mark of ownership" during day-to-day works here, but "day collar" is easier to say.
He would probably want to have something that can be tugged on and used as a handle or similar, honestly. He might find use in anything that Chilchuck can use to more easily catch his attention or, like, offer a physical "guide" to move him around by - Chilchuck may not be physically strong enough to actually move him on his own, but a bit of extra leverage can probably get a setup where it's a Noticeable Physical Sensation and Laios can follow through on his own. It would be INSANELY impractical in the dungeon, though, which would definitely put a stopper to it - the handle that you have put in so that your halfling pick-lock can have a shot at moving you around at will can also be utilized by enemies who were capable of moving you around previously and probably don't need the extra handle.
We feel like Chilchuck might not 100% Get the full "belonging" aspect of a day collar, at least initially but he could definitely get some mileage out of adding a built-in handle to get Laios's attention. The issue would, of course, be in getting them to this point - we feel like it wouldn't come up super easily? Most likely, we think it'd be the sort of thing where Chilchuck makes an offhand comment without it meant to be taken Seriously and Laios jumps on it as "hey we could actually do that".
Chilchuck feels like the sort of guy where it simply wouldn't have passed his mind that a day collar could be a Thing and the idea of someone Wanting that would be a bit out of his sphere of... interest? Knowledge? He wouldn't think of it until the idea of it'd be brought up, and he honestly might take a bit of convincing to come around to it. Laios feels like the kind of guy where he thinks about "what if I wore a harness like an actual beast of burden" and then he thinks about that continually for the next five years.
We can probably give advice on tracking down resources on IRL pet play, but we can't help very much with fiction? Our #1 thing that we feel we Need to have in any fic regardless of content is good characterization, and this tends to significantly narrow the margin of Things We Can Recommend because something can be a stunningly beautiful depiction of how to write pet play but we still won't like it if it's OOC and we are unfortunately prone to having the disease where we exclusively get into stuff that has maybe three other people in the same area.
Hopefully this coheres for you we're sort of rambling with hopes that this'll vaguely get at what we're aiming for - we are heavily impacted by our own personal desires to add MORE spec. bio to everything we're into, ever, so we're unclear if our halfling agriculture & domestication thoughts would fully apply?
We definitely agree that dogs would be uncommon or rare - a poorly-trained dog can probably be a very real danger to even an adult halfling, and the larger breeds of dog can get to be bigger than them, which'll be a HUGE risk especially for an environment when they can't be 100% sure of the breed content of any given dog. You can easily run into Issues training dogs as a normal-sized human - it's going to be a whole lot harder and more risky to get something that's BIGGER than you and can seriously injure or kill you to LISTEN, especially when your stakes are "either you do this right or you are at significant risk of injury from a dog that hasn't quite been trained to be considerate around halflings".
If the dog doesn't know precisely how gentle to go with its pack, then even with good intentions, it can hurt someone very badly - you've definitely got to know EXACTLY what you're doing, or otherwise have a very good trainer. Of course, that might be able to add to fun metaphors later, so... depends on how you handle it. Or handle them, as it may be.
We think that the most familiar form of animal agriculture to them would probably involve raising things like silkworms, mealworms, crickets, and other bugs, both for general materials and because they're small enough that "raising bugs for meat" almost definitely gives more bang for their buck than it would for larger races. We feel like larger domestic animals would be significantly rarer, just because trying to tame just about anything long enough to domesticate when you're only 100cm tall is going to be DIFFICULT. Easier to just make domestic lineages of things like "animal where you can put it somewhere dark and damp with some corn meal and potato slices and get ten times the yield after leaving it for a few weeks". Of course, they'd probably have other domestic animals beyond bugs, but we can't really think of what exactly - ferrets, maybe? Humans domesticated them for hunting, but halflings might be able to make more use of them.
Hopefully some of this at least sparks a bit of inspiration for you - we're simply having fun typing Words. Good luck with your writing!
Ok this is so fucking good I need to stop hoarding it. Everytime I go to publish I start rereading and get distracted đ”âđ«đ”âđ«đ”âđ« Laios seems like the kind of guy where he thinks about âwhat if I wear a harness like an actual beast of burdenâ and then is thinking about it for the next 5 years⊠HELP⊠YEAGâŠ..
I FEEL YOU Iâm becoming a pet play enjoyer but so far nothing scratches the itch like it does with these two. I must do more research and yetâŠâŠ I just keep coming back to Them. Laios spontaneously inventing the most avant-garde kinks in the dunmesh world⊠Chilchuck being like what the fuck. Well. What the fuck. I canât not get him that. And it has to be made out of good materials. Heâd fuck it up if he tried doing this himself. TWIST MY ARM. Sigh.
And god yeah the actual animals that half-foots would have ⊠Chilâs upbringing vs Laiosâ (with all his animals) would be so different. Brewing many scenes from this.
DREAMY SIGH. THANK U.

Forbidden Fruit - Part IV
Part I
"You won't hurt me, don't worry. I'll take care of it."
"Can I help?" The words were pleasant, eager, but something feverish snuck back into that golden gaze, hunger very much apparent in his eyes if not his voice. "Please, Chil. I want to ... please let me help."
Chilchuck had planned to take care of the preparations by himself. Because he knew what he was doing and would like to get the task done fast and efficient before moving on to the main event. That plan had been laid before golden eyes burned up into his and the impressive length gave another heavy throb under his palm, though. If the tallman was that eager for it Chilchuck saw no good reason to deny him. It might take longer, yes. But they might enjoy themselves along the way. That was the entire point of this encounter, after all. That they would enjoy themselves thoroughly.
"Alright", he nodded, watching those golden eyes brighten. "You can help. Just..."
He did not get to finish the sentence. Not when those hands grabbed him tight again to haul him up and forward with terrifying ease, setting him down right on that sturdy jaw. Chilchuck's heart slammed forward into his ribs, his breath catching in the back of his throat as his hands flew forward to brace and steady himself. Before he could so much as protest he felt a thick, wet tongue lave up against his hole.
"Laios!", he shouted, voice pitched higher than he would ever admit, fingers scrambling against the headboard for purchase. Below him that tongue drew slick, lazy circles around his opening.
The feeling was strange, wet and hot, and his first instinct was to squirm away from it. As soon as he so much as shifted his weight though those hands grabbed and pulled him back down against that jaw, that swirling tongue. The possessive, demanding move made the remaining heat in Chilchuck's veins spike, arousal and fury blending together, and then that tongue probed and pushed and slipped inside him.
The noise escaping him was definitely not a squeak.
"Fuck, you can't just...!"
Now that he had already left Chilchuck reeling the tallman paused, lifting him just enough to speak, breath still so hot against his slick opening.
"Should I stop?"
The question was muffled but honest, concerned. Chilchuck knew it would take but a single word from him to stop this. To make Laios put him down and instead do whatever he was asked to do. He could tell the tallman to get the oil from the bedside table. Hell, he could make the man sit and wait while Chilchuck took care of it himself entirely, after all. Maybe that would teach him some manners.
But even though the thought was promising it was also what gave him the nerve to shake his head and mutter a small, definitely not embarrassed, "No...".
He could stop this any time he liked. Apparently, that was enough reason to keep going. Especially when the noise Laios rumbled against him was one that shook him to his core.
Screwing his eyes shut Chilchuck grabbed the headboard. He was unable to brace himself for the sheer enthusiasm the tallman unleashed on him as he began licking again. Long, broad swipes, quick circles and wet kisses across and around his rim. Nibbling teeth and probing pushes against the opening. Once he pressed inside again Chilchuck could not keep his thighs from trembling. The feeling of that tongue was alien as it worked itself deeper, loosening his muscles and creating space inside him. Licking and sucking and opening him up so gently yet so insistently. Filling him up more thoroughly than he ever would have imagined a tongue to be capable of. The discomfort of the stretch fading soon to leave a sweet tingle of arousal.
The noises were unholy. The slick sliding sounds, wet slurping and low groaning. With his eyes closed Chilchuck was focused in on them even more, picking up every satisfied smack of lips and every squelch of that tongue pushing deeper. It made his skin crawl in the most delicious ways.
The strangely sweet torture dragged on, the tallman below him never ceasing his ministrations, tongue and lips and jaw working tirelessly to open him up. It took Chilchuck a good while caught between morbid fascination and arousal, until he understood that this tongue would keep enjoying him the whole night through if he did not put a stop to it. So even though he had taken quite a liking to the strange feeling he reached down to pet blond hair, eyes still closed as he panted.
"That's enough."
There was a whine from below him yet once again he was grabbed by strong hands and lifted, moved with care and ease until he was set down on that broad chest once again.

Started catching up on Delicious in Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi watching (from just before the fight with the Red Dragon to Laios's party parting ways with Toshiro and Kabru).
>I've seen spoilers before about the party finding Falin and the resurrection ritual, but my goodness I still got chills watching it firsthand.
>I may or may not have been twirling a lock of hair around my finger, kicking my feet, and giggling while watching Marcille, dressed in blood-drenched robes, matter-of-factly explain that she's secretly a specialist in forbidden magic, and that she'd be using it to bring Falin back.
>Chilchuck seems to be a bit of tsun.
>Marcille you fool! Falin is *not* a little kid anymore and does *not* want you to see her as such! sigh I suppose even powerful mages can still be useless lesbians (yes I've heard there's some background trauma there too, but I haven't got that far yet, so shhh).
>I love terrifying and surreal imagery.
>I know for a fact Chilchuck is a dad with adult daughters so I can only imagine the sheer embarrassment as Senshi gave him The Talk.
>Poor Falin. : (
>Of course they used petrified!Marcille to help with food prep.
> Okay, now that I've gotten to know more about Kabru: Kabru Ă Laios shippers? I see your vision.
> Falin as a spellcasting dragon-griffon hybrid is pretty damn dangerous! No wonder Toshiro and Laios argued about what to do.
>WHOAH, HEY!
>So, I know there's apparently been a lot of Discourse(TM) about the fight between Laios and Toshiro, and honestly, I'm not sure why: one's socially awkward because he has trouble with social cues and understanding people when they're being indirect, the other's socially awkward because he can't speak his mind and bottles his feelings to avoid conflict. The whole thing made me more sad than anything else, but at least there seems to be hope that their friendship is salvageable.
>Kabru you silly goose! If only you hadn't been recovering from, y'know, being dead, you could have overheard Laios and Toshiro hashing things out and realized you don't need to fake it to get on Laios's good side! I hope he doesn't feel too disconcerted when he realizes he could probably have even avoided disclosing whatever background trauma he has and just said eating monsters makes him uncomfortable, and still been accepted by Laios. Hopefully he'll avoid making similar mistakes to Toshiro in his relationship with Laios.
>A couple things I will criticize Toshiro for: I don't think he's suitable for Falin, not because he's a bad guy, but because I think that, either he doesn't really understand her or he's too willing to overlook that she has similar quirks to her brother, and so any marriage would not be as happy as he'd suppose, and he'd just end up bottling up his real feelings about it again. This may not seem too dissimilar to how Marcille also tends to ignore Falin having similar quirks to Laios, and I wouldn't be surprised if the contrast wasn't deliberate, but in Marcille's case, she's shown a willingness to try to work with Laios at his level, and gradually seems to be respecting him more, and hopefully that will lead her to being more honest about how she views Falin, which will ultimately strengthen their bond.
>The other thing is that leaving a party member like Asebi behind is pretty callous (even if I can appreciate that searching for her is dangerous in the group's current circumstances). I haven't seen much, if any, fandom talk about Asebi, so I'm guessing she's not a major character, but I hope that's because Laios's party is somehow able to return her to the surface over the course of a single episode, and not because the party finds her as monster chow.
>My current observations about the show suggest that the cast is a bunch of socially awkward people driven by intense passion for their special interests, so it's small wonder that it's become popular.
