Exploring the Hidden Gems of Bhutan: Offbeat Destinations on Medhey
It's possible that "Medhey" might be a term, website, or platform that has emerged after my last update.
However, I can provide you with information about some offbeat and hidden gem destinations in Bhutan that you might find interesting:
Haa Valley:
Nestled between Paro, Chhukha, and Samtse, Haa Valley is known for its pristine landscapes, traditional architecture, and unique festivals. It offers a less-traveled experience compared to more popular destinations.
Phobjikha Valley:
Famous for its black-necked crane conservation area, Phobjikha Valley is a serene and picturesque destination. It provides an opportunity to experience rural Bhutanese life and witness the migratory cranes (seasonal).
Bumthang Valley:
Comprising four valleys (Chokhor, Tang, Ura, and Chhume), Bumthang is often referred to as the "cultural heartland" of Bhutan. It is rich in history, dotted with monasteries, and offers a tranquil atmosphere.
Lhuntse:
Lhuntse is known for its traditional textiles and weavings. It is a less-visited district with scenic landscapes and a chance to witness Bhutanese craftsmanship.
Merak and Sakteng:
Located in eastern Bhutan, the villages of Merak and Sakteng offer a unique cultural experience. The area is inhabited by the Brokpas, a semi-nomadic community with distinct traditions and customs.
Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek:
A less-explored trekking route, the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek takes you through beautiful landscapes and offers stunning views of numerous alpine lakes.
Samdrup Jongkhar:
Located in southeastern Bhutan, Samdrup Jongkhar serves as an entry point from India. It's a gateway to the eastern region and offers a mix of cultural experiences.
Punakha Suspension Bridge:
Not far from Punakha Dzong, the Punakha Suspension Bridge is one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan. Crossing it provides a thrilling experience with panoramic views.
When exploring offbeat destinations, it's essential to plan with a local tour operator who can provide guidance on permits, transportation, and accommodations. Additionally, always check for the latest travel updates and conditions. If "Medhey" is a new travel platform or service, consider checking their website or contacting them directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Revisiting Kashmir
The last time we were in Srinagar was in 1986. Abhinav was just born and we had sent Aashwin by himself to Srinagar. Billa received him at the airport. A month later Pummy and I, along with Abhinav joined too. I stayed briefly, but Pummy and the children stayed there for a month.
Turn of events did not allow us an opportunity to return to our homeland for several decades. While we had shared our memories of Fateh Kadal with our children, it wasn’t he same as first hand experience, though Aashwin remarkably recollected playing in the ‘kani’.
In December 2010, we had another member added to the family. Monty (Mandrita) and Aashwin were married. It was time that we took a family vacation in our homeland. But it was only in fall of 2013 that we could make it, coz of my work schedule.
We landed in Srinagar in October of 2013 with a plan to spend about ten days. Our first stay was in Pahalgam in a cottage owned by the decendents of Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed. The cottage was by the side of downstream Liddar. A very quiet place away from the township. We could hear the rushing river waters.
Next we returned to Srinagar and stayed in a serene property by the lake in Nishat Garden area. We wanted to visit Fateh Kadal ASAP but unfortunately daily downtown curfews prevented us. There was no restriction in movement in the Dal/Amira Kadal area. So we visited various tourist spots, boat rides, shopping et el. Also visited my almamater, Biscoe School.
Each day we looked forward to visiting Fateh Kadal, but were repeatedly disappointed. In the meanwhile we took trips to Tulmul and Gulmarg . Visit to Tulmul was rather tense. It was a Friday and with usual calls by separatists. But our travel arrangements person gave us confidence that all would be fine. The entire route was manned by security forces and we could hardly see any one on the roads. We were tense but in the end we had great darshan, virtually by ourselves at the he Sanctum Santorum. We were back to our cottage by evening and drove down the lake boulevard one more time. Again on Saturday we were advised against visiting old city. I was disappointed. We were leaving following day by afternoon flight.
But then, everyone needs a weekly off. Our travel guy suggested that we checkout early and head for Fateh Kadal before heading for the airport. We did so, leaving by 9 AM. Being a holiday we did not take long and managed to spend about an hour and a half in what used to be our home and neighbourhood. A nostalgic visit with mixed feelings. I will share some pictures that will need very little elaboration of how I must have felt. However, the current residents of our home and the neighbours were extremely warm. We had kahwa etc with our hosts. As we left, they gave fruits from the garden to Pummy saying this is your malyun now.....
As we stepped out, word had gone around about us. All the neighbors warmly hugged me/ shook hands and said sweet words. But I was shocked when a person sitting in the shop, from where we used to buy milk/curds, said “Che chhukha Ninoo Ji” and then tears rolled down his eyes. He told Pummy, “Chi chakh saen nosh. Yi chui che Variv/Gari”. He wanted us to have tea with him but we had to decline due to paucity of time.
A couple of days back under influence of what bedtime stories she watches, Annika, our grand daughter, asked me if I lived in a castle when I was a baby. I proudly showed her the pictures of Fateh Kadal. There was a glimmer in her eyes. How could I tell her that for various reasons it wasn’t ours anymore.
