As Ottawa launches investigations into claims China interfered in two elections, some members of the Chinese diaspora are warning about an increase in anti-Asian racism, while others say racism could be used to hinder the search for the truth.  "The first thing we need to be very sure about is that racism is not being used as a shield to deflect or distract from the real issue at hand," said Cheuk Kwan, co-chair of the Toronto Association for Democracy in China.  As anti-Asian racism has spiked as a result of the pandemic and as the Sino-Canadian relationship continues to be strained, many question the effect of the investigations on the Chinese diaspora.

"I think the whole global phenomenon is a byproduct of just individual hard work, of people trying to survive. I think, if you look behind most Chinese restaurants—not the commercial ones, but the Mom-and-Pop family restaurants—it’s basically a story about immigration, diaspora, survival, and probably hardship and discrimination."

PHOTOS: Hong Kong protester shot and dozens arrested as Trump lauds China on National Day
A pro-democracy protester was shot and at least 30 were arrested as violent clashes rocked Hong Kong streets Tuesday while China celebrated the 70th anniversary of communist rule.
Beijing marked National Day and "national rejuvenation" with a military parade and fireworks, but in Hong Kong tens of thousands of demonstrators held a "national grief" march. Some black-clad protesters clashed with police who fired water cannons and tear gas into the crowd.
Fires burned on Hong Kong streets, many subway stations were closed and many shops were shuttered as police warned residents to remain in their homes.
President Donald Trump lauded Chinese President Xi JinPing but made no mention of Hong Kong in a brief tweet Tuesday: "Congratulations to President Xi and the Chinese people on the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China!"
In Hong Kong, video recorded by a student group appeared to show several protesters hurling objects at pursuing riot police. One officer drew his gun and fired, and a protester collapsed as the others fled.
“The so-called National Day is a day for mourning. We are mourning those who sacrificed for democracy in China,” former lawmaker Lee Cheuk-yan told the South China Morning Post. “It’s 70 years of suppression. We mourn that, and we also condemn the fact that the Hong Kong government together with Chinese government denied the people of Hong Kong the right to democracy.”
Police Senior Superintendent Yolanda Yu Hoi-kwan said police were "saddened" that an 18-year-old man was shot near his left shoulder.
"A large group of rioters attacked police officers," she said. "As an officer felt his life was under serious threat, he fired a round at the assailant to save his own life and his colleagues’ lives."
She added that protesters have been repeatedly warned to stop breaking the law.
"The police force really did not want to see anyone being injured, so we feel very sad about this," she said, adding that "We will strictly enforce the law." (AP)

Danait Mehreteab still remembers what it was like to move from Regent Park to Mississauga as a young child. She was in Grade 5 and says she went from being a part of a diverse community to standing out.
"On my first day, actually, someone had called me the N-word and I didn't understand that experience until moving to Mississauga," she said.
For Mehreteab, understanding would come after joining an eight week diversity leadership certificate program in Grade 11.
"Over the course of each week we learned about diversity, inclusion, stereotypes, prejudice," she said. "Doing this program kind of put a name to all the things I was feeling and experiencing."
Harmony Movement is the organization that ran that program. It has offered diversity, equity and inclusion training programs for 25 years, but executive director Cheuk Kwan says it's now another victim of provincial cuts.

"We didn't expect a complete shutdown of the equity programs," Kwan said, adding that the Ontario government has provided core funding for the organization's school programs for years.
He said they received $350,000 from the province last year. However, in December, they were notified that the province would not renew a funding agreement.

Description
An eye-opening and soul-nourishing journey through Chinese food around the world. *A PEOPLE MAGAZINE BEST NEW BOOK* *A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITOR'S CHOICE* *A NEW YORK POST BEST NEW BOOK*From Cape Town, South Africa, to small-town Saskatchewan, family-run Chinese restaurants are global icons of immigration, community and delicious food. The cultural outposts of far-flung settlers, bringers of dim sum, Peking duck and creative culinary hybrids, Chinese restaurants are a microcosm of greater social forces.? They are an insight into time, history,?and place. Author and film-maker?Cheuk?Kwan, a self-described ?card-carrying member of the Chinese?diaspora,? weaves a global narrative by linking the myriad personal stories of chefs, entrepreneurs, labourers and dreamers who populate Chinese kitchens worldwide. Behind these kitchen doors lies an intriguing paradox which characterizes many of these communities: how Chinese immigrants have?resisted?or?have often been
