They either dropped Louella McGruff -- while retaining her history and background and identifiable job role -- or they radically changed her appearance -- by which I mean hair color and doo.

BEING A LIST OF THE THIRTEEN GREATEST RIVERDALE LINES, ON THE OCCASION OF THAT SHOW'S TERMINATION
As our much loved/hated show comes to an end, I feel compelled to record, for posterity, the greatest thirteen pieces of dialogue to spring from the pens of RAS and his henchmen. It was, of course, originally a top ten list, but I simply could not exclude a few of these treasures. Without further ado:
13.
“I dropped out in the 4th grade, to sell drugs, to support my nana.”
“That means you haven't known the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of high school football.”
Spoken by: an inmate of Leopold and Loeb Juvenile Detention Center, and Archie Andrews.
In: 3 x 2
Yeah, okay, this one had to be on the list. It’s funny, I’ll admit. It’s a great example of the overwrought semi-sincere melodrama that helped make this show so special. It’s low on the list largely because The Normies got their hands on it, so every time I hear someone make a reference I get all “do not cite the deep magic to me, witch.”
12.
“No! No! What are we supposed to do now? I’m horny as heck!”
Spoken by: Archie Andrews
In: 7 x 16
Season 7 is undeniably dreadful, and yet there are diamonds in the rough. The occasion is the failure of a projector, just as Archie and Reggie prepare to watch a pornographic film. The utter desperation with which KJ Apa delivers this line is exquisite. One is made to feel they are witnessing a genuine tragedy.
11.
“Tonight, they’re making an exception and debuting a cover of the song my parents claim they were listening to the night Jason and I were conceived.”
Spoken by: Cheryl Blossom.
In: 1 x 1
Really a fantastic line. A wonderful encapsulation of the casual absurdity of Cheryl’s character, and a foretaste of the lunacy we would plumb in later episodes and seasons.
10.
“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m weird. I’m a weirdo. I don’t fit in and I don’t want to fit in. Have you ever seen me without this stupid hat on? That’s weird.”
Spoken by: Jughead Jones
In: 1 x 10
A genuine classic. “High school football” before “high school football.” One is never entirely sure just how sincere the line is meant to be, both on a meta-level and in-universe. A perfect illumination of Jughead’s pretentiousness. It is made all the better by the occasional cuts to Lili Reinhard’s agonized face.
9.
“At the last dance, multiple students were murdered.”
Spoken by: Principal Holden Honey.
In: 4 x 2
Delivered as an explanation to Toni and Cheryl, as to why there would be no school dance this year. Principal Honey is in fact supremely rational in the cancellation of this dance. This being Riverdale, he is of course treated as an unreasonable tyrant.
8.
“Bro, I know all the secrets of this universe.”
Spoken by: Archie Andrews (evil version)
In: 6 x 5
Spoken as evil Archie reveals his evil plan to keep the parallel universes apart. KJ Apa’s delivery once again makes this line. He is comically sinister. Strangely, he sells it.
7.
“A Vughead kiss, right now, in the present might be precisely what it takes to save a future Bughead from imploding.”
Spoken by: Jughead Jones.
In: 2 x 14
One of those lines that both makes me laugh and makes me genuinely angry. This was a fairly early season, and this may have actually been the first line to get me asking, ‘did they genuinely write and deliver that?’ Extra points for use of the atrocious ‘Vughead’ portmanteau ship name rather than ‘Jeronica.’
6.
“I’m the ultimate wild card. I am the daughter of The Black Hood. The nightmare from next door. I’m training with the FBI and I’m coming for you, you psycho bitch.”
Spoken by: Betty Cooper
In: 4 x 14
Just delicious. Another one of those lines that leaves you somewhat unsure whether or not the writers understood how genuinely hysterical it was. “The Nightmare from Next Door” sounds like an announcer hyping up a wrestler. Spoken with a raw sincerity by Lili Reinhart. Also points for the heavy homoeroticism between Betty and Donna.
5.
“For I am Cheryl Blossom, Queen of the Bees.”
Spoken by: Cheryl Blossom.
In: 5 x 16.
This one really doesn’t require any elaboration.
4.
“Elijah ascended…and I will, too.”
Spoken by: Edgar Evernever.
In: 4 x 5.
Admittedly, this one is only spectacular with context. But in context—the context being that Chad Michael Murray delivers this line while dressed like Evel Knievel and standing in a cartoon rocket right out of a Warner Bros cartoon—it becomes utterly magnificent.
3.
“It’s not queer baiting, it’s saving the world.”
Spoken by: Veronica Lodge.
In: 6 x 22.
It’s actually hard for me to decide whether this one is funnier with or without context. Without context it’s wonderful, but it possibly becomes even funnier when you know that the context is that Veronica needs to kiss Cheryl to transfer superpowers into her body so she can turn into a Scarlet Witch knock-off and stop a magic comet summoned by Sephiroth an English wizard who is also the Devil.
2.
“If there’s no wedding reception, it means the Gargoyle King has won.”
Spoken by: Kevin Keller.
In: 3 x 12.
One of my personal favorites. This is a perfect line because like #3, it requires no real elaboration. There is absolutely no context in which it isn’t hysterical.
1 .
“Word of my exploits serving Nick his comeuppance has seeped into the demimonde of mobsters and molls my father used to associate with, so the five families are sending their youngest and brightest, their ‘princes,’ as it were to, well, come court the rare Mafia Princess who can belly up to the bar with the big boys.
Spoken by: Veronica Lodge.
In: 2 x 20.
This is, in my opinion, the all-timer. Every word is perfect. The rapid-fire alliteration. The use of the word ‘demimonde.’ The entirely unnecessary addition of ‘as it were.’ This is borderline Dr. Seuss. The fact that Camila Mendes delivered it without cracking a smile should have won her an Emmy. No. An Oscar. This line is Riverdale.

I'd just like to remind everyone that Cheryl has NEVER won a dance off. Ever.
#1: Lost to Veronica
#2: "Tied" with a highschooler. (Let's be real, the kid won, but everyone was too afraid to tell Cheryl she lost lest she commit arson on the school. Also Toni wanted to keep her around.)
#3: Evelyn forfeited.
Cheryl Blossom is a gay loser and I love her forever. Thank you.

Coeli's Picks: Black, part 2 (Halloween Edition)
(Multiple movies listed left to right)
One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Black Redux
Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) / Sônia Braga as Leni Lamaison/Marta/Spider Woman

Crimson Peak (2015) / Jessica Chastain as Lady Lucille Sharpe
"I expect others have already jumped on this one, but it's too good not to mention."

Diamonds Are Forever (1971) / Jill St. John as Tiffany Case

Penny Dreadful / Eva Green as Vanessa Ives
"She has several gorgeous black dresses but I'm not sure of episode #s."
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels / Natalie Dormer as Magda (and below)
"I haven't watched Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, but Natalie Dormer as Magda has some great black dresses."

Riverdale (s2e15, "There Will Be Blood") / Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom
"Cheryl is the character I've referred to as fully aware that she's living in a gothic novel, and embracing it to the hilt. This is her outfit for the reading of her father's will. Such a ludicrous show. I love it so much."

Suspiria (1977) / Joan Bennett as Madame Blanc
"I doubt you'll want to watch Suspiria, the incoherent, bloody, but celebrated Italian horror film, but Joan Bennet as Madame Blanc (head of a dance academy that is also a coven of witches) has a terrific witchy black dress." (Yep, I am a self-admitted total wimp about horror.)
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) / Eva Green as Miss Peregrine
"I'm not actually certain this one is black - might be a very dark blue? Depends on lighting?" (Note: the costume looks black on my screen. Her hair, on the other hand, does seem to have a touch of blue.)
Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) / Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna

Moulin Rouge (2001) / Nicole Kidman as Satine
"The 'Gothic Tower' dress."

Seven minutes in heaven
Summary: Veronica is dating Archie, Jughead is dating Betty. But who would’ve thought that Jughead could turn Veronica’s eye? Who would’ve thought that the Serpent Kings secret obsession would be the Rich Raven haired girl whose father is trying to destroy his Serpents?
Who knew that seven minutes in a closet with someone could be difficult and the air so thin.
Ship: Jeronica/Vughead
Edit: 2.9k words
Enjoy xoxo
{******************}
"Because, V, it's an after party." Betty places her hands on Veronica's shoulders, holding onto their eye contact. "Archie and his team just won the last game of the season!" Betty squeals shaking Veronica's shoulders.
"Yeah but Cheryl's throwing it. There are a million other party's going on at this very second that do not have a certain Cheryl Blossom to terrorize it's guests." Veronica says pointedly.
"Yeah, well, this one was the closest with free beer." Archie says passing his girlfriend, Veronica, a red cup.
"I'm going to need something stronger than beer."
"Oh come on! Loosen up! Sure it's Cheryl's house and Cheryl's party, but this is Archies victory." Betty releases veronica and trades V's shoulders for the sleeve of Archies letterman jacket to playfully tug at him, beaming up proudly at him.
"And in a way, V," She drags out the nickname in her lively tone. "It's our party too, we did cheer our bulldogs to victory, did we not?"
"I suppose we did," Veronica sighs beginning to give in, this was clearly a battle she wasn't going to win. They were already here, and Archie deserved to celebrate this moment. She could see how hard he had worked all season to get here, and besides, it was the least she could do.
"I will be right back you guys, I'm gonna go find Jug! He said he'd meet us here but, I haven't seen him." Betty's ponytail was already disappearing into the crowd.
Veronica's heart seemed to stop for three full seconds and start again with a painful swell after hearing Jugheads name. Archie puts his arm around her shoulder.
"And I am going to find something stronger than this disgusting concoction," she gives the liquid in her cup a look of disdain. "find the kitchen with me Archiekins?" Veronica shifts her gaze to meet Archies, forcing her best smile.
"Of course." Archie nods and leans down to give her a quick kiss before beginning their search for the kitchen.
After stepping over spills and empty cups on the floor, pushing through sweaty dancing bodies, and breathing their way through the smoke in the air, Veronica and Archie found their way to the kitchen rather easily. Veronica abandons the warmth of Archie's arm and start searching through the freshly polished mahogany cabinets.
She's made her way through three cabinets, now searching through the back of the bottom cabinet left to the sink when Jugheads voice startles her. Her heart almost slides out of her mouth and onto the wood underneath her when she hits her head, pulling herself out of the cabinet, a bottle of dark substance in hand. When she turns around she doesn't look at him, though she hasn't seen him in two weeks and she would trade oxygen for a glance of even a piece of him. She sneaks her way back into the safety of Archies side while focusing a little too hard on opening the bottle of Bourbon Whisky.
"Betty's told me the two of you have gotten back together, congratulations."
No one except for Veronica can hear the slight condescension in Jugheads tone, no one else knows him well enough to hear it through the music.
"Thanks man." Archie says, kissing the top of Veronica's head. Under Jugheads gaze Archies kiss feels like treason, his arm back around her feels like hot iron, melting into her skin. Veronica stays silent, having gotten the bottle open she takes a swig a few seconds too long.
"This is a party! Why are we just standing here! Let's dance!" Betty screams, breaking the tense silence when the beat of the music changes to something faster, smoother. Betty takes the bottle from Veronica's hand and takes a sip herself. She hands the bottle back to Veronica and leads Jughead to the dance floor, Veronica doesn't look up until she can only see Jugheads back. Her heart feels like it might burst out of her chest when she sees the serpent planted on the back of his jacket.
When did he…?
"What do you say? Should we dance?" Archie looks down at Veronica, drowning out her thoughts about Jughead and his new jacket. .
Veronica smiles, "Of course," She intertwines their fingers and follows after Betty and Jughead, looking at the floor instead of the Jacket.
Veronica leads him out to the dance floor, as close to Jughead and Betty as they can be, the pair already dancing. Veronica's body falls in tune with the music, Archie pulls her in close, his hands on her hips as she rolls into him in time with the beat.
Veronica steals a glance at her blonde best friend and her boyfriend to find Jughead already looking at her. They lock eyes and she feels deaf to the music. As if it were never playing to begin with. The eye contact makes her skin rise with goosebumps, her chest aches at the distance between them. Her eyes travel down the length of him, his tattooed covered throat and hands. Hands resting on Betty's waist.
The sight pulls her back to the surface, the music floods into her senses and makes her head spin with a sudden intensity. She brought the bottle back up to her lips, drinking until it burned the back of her throat while ink-free hands roamed over her dancing body.
Her eyes were still closed and the glass still touched her lips when the bottle was ripped from her grasp, small drops of alcohol falling over her little black dress. Her eyes opened and she glared at the culprit that stole it from her, the reason her heart had been beating funny since the day she walked into Riverdale. Jughead brough the bottle to his lips.
"There you are bulldog!" A voice speaks up from the middle of the pair. Neither Veronica or Jughead had noticed she was standing there.
"Hi, Cheryl." Archie and Veronica's movements slow to stop, as do Betty and Jugheads.
"Great party, Cheryl." Betty perks up from beside Jug.
"Why thank you, fellow Vixen." Cheryl gives Betty a nasty smile, and, if you didn't know Cheryl, you would think she was being kind.
"Come, Join us in seven minutes in heaven. I've saved you all a seat. Two for you, Betty." Cheryl glances briefly over Betty, giving the group a wide red lipped smile.
"No thanks, Cheryl, we're all in relationships and quite frankly I'm not interested in any dieses you might be spreading around." Veronica snaps as the sea of people continues to dance around them.
Cheryl's stare hardens but her conniving smile remains. "As Bulldog and Vixen, your hostess, meaning Moi, insists. What's the matter Betty, still afraid of having a little a fun? You are a Vixen now, just as you've always begged to be, don't you think you should play like one too?"
Betty rolls her eyes, "If we play one round will you shut the hell up?"
"Maybe" Cheryl's voice perks, "Follow me ladies and gentlemen."
With Cheryl front and center the five of them make their way into a quieter part of the house, where the music can be felt in the cushions of Chery's fine leather seats rather than heard through the walls. They all take their seats, Jughead and Betty seated next to one another, across from Veronica and Archie.
Cheryl was circling the group of ten students that also attended Riverdale High. "I think it should be Jughead who goes first. What do you lot think?" Cheryl speaks up from the head of the table, holding an empty glass coca-cola bottle.
"I have a girlfriend." Jughead mumbles, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"You sit at the table, you play the game." Cheryl's voice is hard. "Does anyone second this?"
Reggie laughs from Veronica's left side. "I do!" his words are slurred with drunken chuckles "It's about time you got some play don't you think? I know little miss perfect over there isn't any fun."
"Shut the hell up Reggie." Jughead glares at the drunken idiot at the end of the couch with a red cup up to his snickering mouth.
"Well there we have it. Jughead. You're up first."
Jugheads eyes flicker to Veronica but she was already staring at him. Her eyes flick up from his full mouth to meet his eyes. Her chest tight, hands trembling slightly around the neck of the bottle in her hand. Cheryl placed the empty bottle in the center of the table and spun it with force. Everyone watched as the bottle spun. Veronica and Jughead the only ones looking away to steal a glance at the other. Neither of them would say it. Where they guiltily hoped the bottle would land. And it did, directly on Veronica.
"Absolutely not." Veronica didn't spare a second to let the words fly from her lips. Though her stomach pulled towards Jughead.
"Spin it again." Jughead demanded, his voice so low it demanded attention from every nerve in Veronica's body but she kept her eyes locked on Cheryl's.
"Rules declare that if you refuse, then the hostess gets to take your turn." She chuckles cynically. "I wouldn't mind if I do."
Veronica wanted to gouge the red heads eyeballs out.
"V, it's okay. I trust you more than I trust that Viper. Besides after this we can get back to the party." Betty speaks up.
"B, No." Veronica shakes her head.
"Betty's right, no matter what your plan is Cheryl, that isn't who they are."
Cheryl smirks deeply, "We'll see." Her voice is fresh poison with certainty. Like she knows something she shouldn't, something Archie and Betty don't.
"It's okay V, I know you would never do that to me." The words cut Veronica wide open, right there on the table she should've bled out every secret, every whisper in the dark. Veronica nodded and stood.
She could do this, she would stand on one side of the closet, and he would stand on the other. For several minutes. She wouldn't even breathe if that’s what it took. She walked towards the coat closet, feeling Jughead close behind her.
When they reached the door, Jughead reached forward from behind her, heat radiating off his body and warming her back, to twist the door open for her.
"Have fun you two," Cheryl taunted as they stepped inside.
Veronica started the timer on her phone the minute the door shut and she stared down at the numbers decreasing with every passing second. Jughead stared at her as she refused to look at him, her face illuminated by her cell phone.
"Fun party." Jughead mumbled.
"Shut up. Don't speak." He could say whatever he wanted, just as long as he were talking to her.
Jughead made a face as if to say 'if you insist' and stood quiet for a moment. Veronica continued to stare at the clock, anything to keep from noticing him. The longer she stared at the clock the longer it seemed to take for each second to pass. His cologne spread into her senses, intoxicating her. She was physically aware of the space he took up in the tight closet, if was as if her skin were a magnet, constantly pulling her in his direction. Their feet were just six inches apart. One step forward and…
"Staring at that won't make the time pass by any quicker." His voice filled the closet again.
"What part of 'don't speak' wasn't clear to you?" Veronica was looking at him now and he had a stupid smirk on his face. She wanted to smack the smirk off his face if only to feel his skin on her palm.
"When did you and Archie get back together."
"When did you become a Serpent?" Veronica bit back.
"What does that matter?"
"It matters and you know it." She gritted, glaring hard into his green eyes.
"Will you love me any less?" he teased, taking a step forward. Veronica takes a step back, trying and failing to keep the distance between them when her back hits the wall and their shoes are touching.
"I don't love you at all now." Her voice strains under the presence of him. Their noses almost touching.
"Is that so?" He chuckles. Low and deep the sounded reaches the depth of her stomach.
"I feel nothing for you." She states, as if trying to command her heart to stop beating so recklessly, trying to command her skin to stop reaching so desperately for him, pulling away from her bones, desperate for a touch from him.
"Nothing?" He repeats.
"No, actually, that would be a lie." Her voice turns ice cold. "Because I hate you." But he sees straight through to her heart, beating almost as hard as his.
Jughead brings his hand up to the side of her neck, his thumb caressing her jaw. Her body tenses in a painful relief, relief that makes her bleed for more than just his hand on the side of her neck.
He pulls her forward so their chests are now flush together, her phone falling from her hands. His hand slowly wraps tightly around her neck. A heat grows in her belly that only he can cause. Their breathing had deepened, trying to keep their composure, her skin ached pleasantly where he held her neck.
"Just one kiss." he whispers, his lips brushing against hers. The feeling makes her joints weak.
"We can't." Veronica struggles to keep her voice firm.
"We shouldn't." Jughead agrees
"Just one kiss." Veronica breathes and Jughead presses his lips against hers, the both of them humming in sweet relief. Their bodies relaxing together at the taste of the other. Jughead's hands move to her waist, holding her in place as he kisses her deeper, their mouths fitting so perfectly together. Jughead kisses her deeply and for what feels like could be the rest of their lives.
Veronica pushes away from the kiss as if it's burned through her skin to her very core and it has. They lock eyes with a hunger burning inside of them. Breathing heavily as if just learning how to do it for the first time. They're silent for a moment, nothing but the sounds of their heavy breathes to fill the space.
"Nobody can know." She states. Jughead nods in agreement. "No one can know."
Veronica puts her hands on his chest, shoving him back into the wall, hungrily reconnecting their lips. Jugheads lips move with hers like they've done this dance since the beginning of time. She slips her hands underneath his shirt and he groans into her mouth when her hands come into contact with his bare, ink covered skin. She's missed tracing the lines of black painted over his skin for months. She couldn't decide where to keep her wandering hands. She needed to touch all of him.
Jugheads hands gripped her thighs and lifted her into the air, dress riding up to her hips as her legs wrapped tightly around his waist as he spun them so it was her back against the wall. Her hands found his hair while their mouths moved frantically, trying to memorize and savor every taste, every detail, every sound, every touch. Jugheads mouth moved from hers down her jawline and to her neck and she melted into him further. She never knew it was possible for someone to have so much power over her.
As she pushed his Serpent jacket off his body to reveal tattooed arms, he realized that he didn't know how to stay away from this girl. The girl that tasted like honey and sounded even sweeter. He was desperate to never spend another second pretending he didn't need to touch her. He pulled her closer, so close it hurt her but she didn't complain, bodies crushed into one another, it still wasn't enough.
Jughead gripped the skin on her thighs so tightly she was sure it would bruise but she loved the high that came with the pain of being in his grasp. She loved bearing marks that came from him.
The timer on V's phone started to ring and neither of them heard it at first, not until the knocking at the door brought them back to the surface and reality came flooding through the spell they'd been under. A part of Veronica didn't want to care, let them be found tangled in one another, let everything they know and love crash and burn as long as she didn't have to stop breathing him in.
But the better part of her, the part of her that tore open when Betty trusted Veronica coming into this closet in the first place, unwrapped her legs from Jugheads waist. She pushed him away and started searching frantically for her phone. "Shit. Shit. Shit." She cursed, picking the device up and silencing it.
Jughead was behind her, pulling her dress back down to where it was supposed to be when the door opened. Jughead straightened out as the crowd staired at them, Archie and Betty front and center, Jughead and Veronica's hair flustered and out of place, their faces flushed, lips swollen, jacket missing and out of breath.
Veronica's heart broke when she saw the look on Betty's face. "You backstabbing bitch." Betty's voice was small and in pieces.
Betty turned and pushed through the crowd. Archie stood silent for a moment longer, staring hard at Jughead, his jaw clenched. Archie moved to turn and head the same way Betty did. But at the last second he turned back and punched Jughead directly in the face.

Fic Update--In Technicolor, Ch.9: The Right Side of my Neck (Cheryl)
.
.
.
Dark eyes to match his dark hair. Dimples in his full cheeks and a small round nose that mirrored his twins. A voice that was just deep enough to give comfort but light enough in melody that it spanned a multitude of octaves. A cheeky grin. A knowing pop of his brow. The glint in the pools of deep onyx that sat unflinching behind his glasses–how they’d focus on me as I worked out the problems Lee couldn’t quite wrap his head around so he handed them off to me. How even while sitting he was still taller than me and the way he found it so funny whenever he used me as a chin rest.
Conventional but very much not.
“Mañana,” Lee smiled wide and lazy, lit up in shades of gold and warm bronze by the sunshine that washed out the bed. “Dormir bien?”
My eyes danced from his to the little gold Guadalupe tucked into the hollow of his throat then up to his lips as they curled into a bigger grin. One that began to show his nearly perfect teeth that added a strange charm to his smirks. Gold really was his color. Gold and green. And blue.
Catching myself staring when Lee shifted somewhat uncomfortably beneath the weight of my blatant gawking, I looked down. Felt the knot in my throat form again when he awkwardly apologized. Retracted his arm from where it had been sitting happily across my hips–just above my thighs and the band of the boxers he’d lent me for sleeping shorts. This confusing concoction of embarrassment that blended with the urge to keep his arm around me a little while longer. The aggravation at him moving it without my permission. The alarms that went off in screaming unison as I thought it. I knew what my irrational mind wanted to do. What it was trying to force. But I stomped it out. Told her to stop because another step closer to that button was another step closer to self-destruction because giving in meant losing my only friend. The only person who saw me. And I knew better now than to allow myself to trauma bond and build up unrealistic romantic delusions in my head.
Flicking his nose once my brain had performed a swift reboot, I raised a brow at him. “We’re going to be late for class.”
Swatting my hand away as it moved to pinch at him, Lee wiggled back. “H-Hey, stop it. We won’t be late, ‘kay. Bertie’s riding with Wynn so I’ve got the truck.”
“Uh, I still have to get my car from FP’s.”
“Or you could just leave it and hangout with us after school.”
“It’s homecoming tonight, Lee.”
“Okay, and?” he asked, rolling onto his stomach–face relaxed on the pillows bunched up on his folded arms with his questioning gaze locked on me.
“Jason’s playing. I may not be in cheer anymore but I still want to support him. It’s also our last homecoming game so it’s important.”
“Then go to the game and then hangout.”
Letting him think that through for a moment, I rolled my eyes when Lee gave me a silent dumb ‘what?’ in return. “I still wouldn’t have my car. So you’d have to wait for me. Or I could just take an Uber to Ocean Park–”
“You’re not taking an Uber that late.”
“Then you’d have to wait for me because I’m going to the game.”
“Fine,” he said without thinking through what exactly he was agreeing to. And it showed when his brain caught up with his mouth and the dread settled in with minute changes in his eyes and defiant smile. But something else followed. Something that brought the sureness back. “Do people still paint half their faces at football games and go shirtless?”
“Lee, no.”
“If we’re going, I’m making a scene of it.”
“Pugsley Addams, no.”
“Oh-ho yes, Cheryl Blossom. My counselor said the last time we talked I should try having more school spirit.” Laughing in a tickled jovial sort of way despite my groaning and protest, he rotated onto his back. Looked up at me just as I looked up at the ceiling with an exaggerated huff. Poking my chin enough times to get my attention, Lee didn’t drop the smile. “I won’t embarrass you, much. I promise.”

.
.
.
Spared when Lee steered his father’s attention back to him, I looked down at my phone. Felt my throat clamp shut at the message dad had sent me. Another warning. A threat daring me that if I stayed out another night without his permission I’d be grounded. A word that was code for worse because he knew better than to say what he actually meant in written format. Texting Jason to see if he could fill me in on how pissed father was–which number he was at on our sliding scale–I recoiled at his terse response of “I don’t know Cher.” Today wasn’t a grade-A day for either of us. Wouldn’t be for our friends either. For Betty, especially, but just as much Jason. But I wasn’t trying to antagonize him or make today about myself. I just wanted a heads up on what I would be returning home to. But I had stepped on another landmine, it seemed, without trying. A bomb that I’d have to diffuse when I got back tonight after the game or brace myself for impact when father blew up. It could only be one or the other, never in between. And I would rest-assuredly be handling this on my own. A thought that made me wither inside.
“You good?” Lee whispered low into my ear, his voice a comforting sound to ease my worries. “Cher…?”
I didn’t want to go. Didn’t want to leave this place of calm and kindness. A bubble of safety where I could rest my weary head and battered bones without jumping back ready to fight at the slightest sound. I felt my cheek ache. The phantom fractures healed in my arm itch beneath my skin. How my jaw tensed and my eyes welled with dread. I didn’t want to go back. Lee had given me the option of staying longer. One that still, technically, stood. But it wasn’t something that was appropriate to bring up now and I had already told him I couldn’t stay another night. Couldn’t but wanted to so badly.
Looking up as Bertie and Wednesday and Gomez and his brother Fester got up in turn to leave, I watched them as if I weren’t inside my own skin. Passively watched in a disassociated daze as the dawning realization of what my evening would end with sank in. Would I be spitting blood into the sink like last time? How fast would the welts on my skin fade away? Half a year ago father had pulled out enough of my hair in one spot I had to wear it up just to effectively cover up the patch.
Rationing my breaths while working to keep control of myself long enough that no one would notice, I was thankful when Mrs. Addams gently placed a hand on my shoulder and sat me back down. Was certain my legs would have given out had I taken another step. Turning my gaze up to her–my eyes more pleading and hopeful than I had meant for them to be–I watched her closely. Observed as she told her two other children to take her car for the day; something that had both Wednesday and Bertie bug-eyed. But with one quick glance to me, Lee’s twin knew. Capitalized on that brain they both shared the same way Jason and I did, or so I hoped we still did.
“Angelito, darling,” she said to her eldest as Lee looked from me to her, “Could you please get my cell from the kitchen? I need to make a call to your school to inform the dean that you’ll be absent for the day as well as Cher.”
“Right.”
Without question or hesitation, he got up. Let go of my hand that he had been holding without my even knowing until the warmth of his palm had vanished. Eyes still fixed to the woman who was, as her children said, a mother to all, I mouthed a silent “thank you” to her when she looked down. Felt myself wishing I could cry as she told me everything would be fine while dotingly stroking her hand down the back of my head. How could they be so kind? How could they be so welcoming? Non-judgemental when I knew they knew about how I had treated Lee? Wasn’t it a mother’s instinct to protect her sons more intensely than her daughters?
Saying something to her son that I couldn’t understand–something that wasn’t English or Spanish–Morticia patted my cheek softly before Lee helped me up, us both leaving the dining room so that she could make her call. Said it was a good thing I hadn’t spent extra time on my makeup that morning since we were staying put for the day. I didn’t realize I hadn’t done my makeup yet until he mentioned it which made me laugh. Something that seemed to confuse Lee but didn’t bother having it explained because he smiled too. Chuckled when I made a turn toward the doors that led outside into the backyard.
Exiting out onto the minimally sheltered porch, I walked out a little further. Fell back onto the hammock bed with a padded body and plush pillows to break my fall. Laughing with some tears of relief breaking free, I swung between joy and the jitter that came from my anxious release. Sniffled and couldn’t stop even as Lee rolled over from where he had plopped down and hugged me tight. Eyes closed as he rubbed circles into my back cooing “shh, you’re okay,” I made myself believe in his words. Made myself trust him and his mother because my paranoid mind whispered in my ear that this was all a hoax. That Mrs. Addams was calling my father to tell him where I was and to come get me. But she would not do such a thing. I didn’t have much to go off of since I had only met her the night before. But I knew selling people down the river was not something that was in her nature. None of her children were like that. Her husband wasn’t either. None of them were so I could trust them when they gave their word.
I could trust this peace. This safety.
Focusing on a new sound filling the space around us, I could hear Pugsley humming. Felt the vibrations in his chest as they traveled up to his throat that moved against the minimal press of my forehead. Heard him as he murmured the words to “Sparks” which was a Coldplay favorite we both shared. Heard the lyrics isolate themselves in my mind as he sang “But I promise you this. I’ll always look out for you.” Sang back to him “And I saw sparks” which made his jaw move downward slightly when he smiled. He told me I was skipping the best parts. I told him the whole song was the best part. Looking down at me with an arched brow, he bit at my nose. Said it was good to have me arguing with him again.
Ironic, I found it, that the part of me that used to annoy him most was now Lee’s barometer for telling whether or not I was okay in the head.

Riverdale 7x04 - Love and Marriage (are not to be found in this episode, also spoilers)
Normally, I write these things as soon as the episode ends, but Christ on a Cracker I needed a break. This is going to be painful.
So, Jughead and Ethel are arrested for the murder of Ethel’s parents. Veronica talks to Jughead at the station and they realize that all they need to do to prove, at least, Jughead didn’t do it is to get the Coroner's reports and find out when the parents were killed. If it was during the dance, well, there are several witnesses to the fact that Jughead was there the whole time. Veronica gets the reports, but no Dr. Curdle Jr. (he’s Betty’s special friend).
Archie finds out Cheryl has told her family that they slept together. However, she tells him that her little lie is protecting her from her family and he chooses to play along. Of course, as soon as he gets home, he finds out that his mom has talked to Cheryl’s mom and now they’re all going to have dinner together to fix this mess.
Betty wants to have sex. Kevin wants to wait until marriage. They break up. Later, Toni will take Betty to the underground Coffee Shop, where Betty will see Kevin dancing with Clay. Betty goes home and has a talk with her mother who...fuck me...well, I was right that Alice suspected Kevin. She’s not at all shocked about Kevin dancing with another man, says men sometimes have urges, and presses Betty to steer Kevin back in the right direction.
Veronica gets Jughead out of jail and they go to Pop’s to celebrate. Jughead tells Veronica that he was able to find out that, after her fight with her parents, Ethel did leave the house and...God, long story short, Julien Blossom was a witness to Ethel’s whereabouts when her parents were killed. And Jughead convinces him to tell the truth by punching him in the face. One of the few good moments of the show. Ethel is released back into the care of the Cooper’s.
Meanwhile, The Blossoms and the Andrews have their dinner. Oh look, Clifford’s back and, apparently, he’s the Mayor. Clifford insults the memory of Fred by saying that Archie reminds Clifford of Fred. Then, Clifford and Mary decide that Cheryl and Archie must get married. And, just cutting to the chase, it seems like they’re going to get married. And then Archie thinks they can Elope and run away and maybe they learn to love each other. And, in the end, Cheryl backs out because Toni talks her out of it. Cheryl suggests Archie write Betty a poem, which he does. Toni gives Cheryl a book. And Archie goes to give Betty the poem...only to find Frank standing in the dining room. Fuck.
Ok, a little bit of honesty here. I checked out halfway through this episode. Here’s why. See, They decided Fang’s needs a storyline. How about knocking up Midge? Except they don’t know if she’s truly pregnant. But don’t worry, Toni has a way to tell. So they.....I need a moment.
They all meet in the biology room that night and Toni tells them....that the surefire way to find out if Midge is pregnant is to inject Midge’s pee into a toad and if the toad lays eggs overnight, she’s pregnant.
Everyone, I present an accurate representation of what went through my mind at this moment.
Seriously, this scene from RWBY Chibi encompasses everything I feel about this episode.
Anyway, to wrap this shit show up. Betty talks with Kevin, but it seems she’s going to be a friend and not listen to her mother’s advice. Betty starts to fight back against Alice, who demands to know where Betty got the sex book. Ethel admits it’s hers. Later, we find that Alice has burnt the book and sent Ethel to the Sister of Quite Mercy (Ethel can’t ever catch a break).
Meanwhile, Jughead finds his place trashed and Hot Dog gone. Veronica lets him stay in her apartment for the night. Then, she helps him get back Hot Dog and does an Extreme Home Makeover on his Train Car. At the end of the episode, Jughead and Veronica end up kissing. Which, compared to everything else in the episode, is...it won’t last, but it will be interesting. At least, it’s one thing that’s interesting.

Riverdale Thoughts: 3x07
Boy let me tell you I am always here for a preview that shows Betty about to fuck some shit up. This episode was...
The overuse of the word skivvies in the opening statement
Penelope being the one who is gossiping about teenagers - same
Frank referring to Betty as voluptuous and ripe like can he be milkman'd now???
KITTEN. Kill him.
Betty knowingly calling Cheryl a square for being on the dance show
I love the term Frosted and will be using it
The look Smithers gives Veronica when she calls her having to get a job 'child abuse'
The regression of Tom Keller
Beeswax and cut the gas.
It would give me great pleasure to see Julian Blossom get punched again
I'm sorry, Cheryl, who is enforcing the rules when that stupid dude lowers his hand to Betty's ass like ??
Alice blaming Betty for that drives me up a wall
I'm glad we are already having Veronica buy businesses out from under her parents
But like... that was not her Edward Hopper??
Archie being the gay ally rn but really needing him to be feeling that bisexuality (ugh but not with Kevin god)
FINKS
Kevin missing the layup after vaguely alluding to his sexuality around Archie is a chefs kiss moment
TOM KELLER GOING TO JULIAN OVER KEVIN I cannot
Veronica, the man can barely afford his dead ass theater he cannot afford a commercial spot
Blossom Maple Syrup as an advert akin to drinking milk is sending me
Twyla looks so good in this motel room, like the didnt need to do her so dirty in s6
Archie's bust in as Kevin's gay boyfriend is absolutely incredible
The Nicole Kidman commercial is amazing and I'm glad they teased it before the season even dropped
LIKE SHE JUST STEALS THE EDWARD HOPPER FROM THE WALL
"Her personal collection" sure jan
Betty can't just show her panties on live TV without ALL of her classmates being there
Alice being like you broke my heart girl like lower your expectations, this happens every decade and also you're insane
RIP Brad Rayburry, Jughead's newest daddy
WHO IS GOING TO TOP JUGHEAD IF NOT BRAD RAYBURRY OR VERONICA?? that's all.
Free Betty!
And also and more importantly, FREE ETHEL.
