STAYING ALIVE MASTERPOST, FROM A BROKE TEEN WITH ADHD
here you go. some down to earth tips on how to not die metally nor physically.
tired of those "drink three liters of water everyday uwu" and "wake up at 5 am" and "buy a bath bomb and a fec mask and some other things you don't have the money for" shit? i'm here for ya.
1. NOT DYING
eat at least three meals a day, one of which m u s t be warm and above 300 kcal (it can be istant ramen with an egg added if you have to)
you technically should shower everyday, but we know how it is. A change of clothes is sometimes enough.
DRY SHAMPOO AND BABY WIPES!!!
keep bottles with water everywhere. On your desk, near that spot on the floor you always end up sitting on, near your bed, basically whenever you know you spend a lot of time. No need to get up and go to the kitchen will help. Obviously change the water in the bottles as often as you can.
Get some form of physical activity. It doesn't have to be much, you can for example replace scrolling on tiktok by walking around your room and scrolling on tiktok! Brilliant, isn't it? Obviously, running or doing those 10 minutes workouts from youtube is better, but you are still getting like an hour of walking.
Buy blankets. Steal blankets. Summon blankets from other dimensions. Just make sure you have a lot of warm, soft blankets in your house. You will thank me when you won't have the anergy to wash your sheets (just take them off and throw some blankets on your bed), or when the power goes out.
If you have pets, ALWAYS keep spare food that'll last for a week for them.
things to always have in the kitchen: milk, eggs, flour, rice, pasta, yeast, cheese, oil, a leafy vegetable, onions, tomatoes, apples, patatoes, some flavourful sauce, sugar, salt, spices and an emergency chocolate bar. You can make a lot of food with those. Just make sure you won't eat the chocolate too fast.
Have a lot of spare batteries. A lot.
Get urself a flashlight, a lighter, and a pocket knife.
Remember the apples? eat one a day. if you don't like apples or you can't eat them for any other reason, you can take a kiwi, banana, orange, basically something that will give you vitamins and non processed sugar.

2. NOT DYING INSIDE
Open the damn window.
Don't watch so many commentary videos. You are probably not even checking the sources, so you can easily make unjust judgement, and like. did you even hear of half of those people before?
make a discord server just for yourself. get into the habit of writing little things that happened to you there. rant about the fanfics you read. or the movies. vent there if you don't have anyone you can vent to. write your ideas there, write e v e r y t h i n g. make a section for passwords, for quick ideas, for your to do lists. you won't lose it as you do with sticky notes or notebooks. there is no risk anyone will see it. oh, and when you'll have a strong impulse to tell emily that you hate her? write that message in your private server and list all ur arguments. look at tat the next day and decide if you really mean that.
life sucks. come to peace with it.
cuddle ur pets if you have them
1 hour a day without a lot of sensory input. if you have to, reduce to half an hour.
if you find yourself scrolling endlessly through social media, make sure it's pintrest (just don't compare urself to the people here; if you have issues with that, tumblr may be better)
delete. twitter. from. your. phone.
influencers are lying to you; maybe not even intentionally. remember when you were watching that cute-aesthetic-productive morning routine, and you were wondering why your life isn't that pretty? why your room is a mess? why you cannot for the life of god be aesthetic 24/7? its the filter. don't worry about it, their lifes arent that nice either.
realize there's actually nothing stopping you from screaming as loud as you can right now. like there is no physical barrier. think about it. realize there's no actual physical barierr to many other things.
your body is your body. you can decide how it looks like; just remember it's in your greatest interest to keep it healthy.
3. BEING A LITTLE BETTER THAN JUST ALIVE
If you wear make up, take it off before you go to sleep.
moisturize your body; everything is better when your skin doesn't feel dry
have a one brand of cosmetics that you love and buy things mainly from it. they often have sets of products that complete each other. i like ziaja. it's a polish brand, it's surprisingly cheap and has nice quality
cleanser, moisturizer, face mist
of you can, change your sheets once every two weeks
do the dishes before your sink starts developing it's own ecosystem
do a deep house clean once a month (don't beat yourself up when you don't tho)
keep your workspace organized (it doesn't have to look organized to other people, remember)
sunscreen
cook your own food
keep a calendar
no money for scented candles? got ya. make a simmer pot: throw some apple peel, a couple of cinnamon sticks and whatever spices that smell good you have into a pot, add some water and simmer. boom. your house smells good, and you haven't spend 20 dollars.
If you really like candles, buy scented wax melts. it's cheaper.
Buy urself scented mists. they're pretty cheap and will make you feel A LOT better.
keep your clothes clean. if you aren't sure if that shirt thats on your chair is dirty or not, throw it in the washing mashine anyway. better be sure.
if you can, make your bed right when you get up
wear clothes that make you feel good. put some effort into your outfits. really.
4. OTHER PEOPLE
be nice to essential workers.
if you have money, give tips.
remember, you do not owe anyone love; it is not something you can force. even if they saved your life. even when they helped you in your darkest time. if you don't love them, you don't.
you don't have to be in a romantic relationship to be happy.
if you want to, date! date everyone! date girls, date boys, date nonbinary people! date people completly different than you, date people from different countries, date them!!! just make sure they're kind and won't kill you. even if you don't end up in a relationship, you can learn a lot.
don't be afraid to piss off people that deserve it
smile to strangers :)
5. NOT FAILING SCHOOL

do not let your studying be just reading the same partagraph over and over again. it won't work. believe me.

try to make yourself intrestet in whatever you are studying (watch veritasium, listen to podcasts about weird history facts)
notes are for you and you only; don't worry about them looking pretty. doodle on margins, make weird metaphors, squeeze in as much info as you can.
when you're studying, listen to music without words/in a language you don't understand.
chew gum while you study
get the forest app, get attached to the trees, focus.
don't feel guilty for taking breaks
grades aren't everything, but they are important.
eat something in school
don't just use the cheapest pens. invest a couple dollars in something that will make writing enjoyable and smooth
those study with me videos? they're great
if you like to argue with the teachers, take care of your grades becouse. they may not like you afterwards.
be nice to your classmates and help them with homework. if you don't do your homework they'll help you
executive dysfunction won't let you study? been there. sometimes it's better to wake up ealier tommorow and do that homework then.

I have a question about Japan what were some major differences you saw between Japan and where you live ?

I live in America, so there’s a ton of differences.
For one, the food obviously is a lot different. Not too much you can get in bulk, so you have to go to the supermarket often. Meats are varying in price, fish being the cheapest and then beef being the most expensive. Fruit is essentially nonexistent unless you’re willing to spend about $5 for a single apple, it’s very expensive! >o
Overall life here is interesting too; people keep to themselves a lot in public and typically try to stay organized. There is also definitely the aspect of not many people are keen on interacting with a foreigner. I’ve been on a bus that was packed except for the seat next to me, but nobody was willing to sit there, haha. Or, I have spoken Japanese to people to ask for locations, what something was, etc; and they’ll respond “Sorry I don’t speak English.” There’s essentially no foreigners, I think 97% of Japan’s population is Japanese last I checked, with other East Asian immigrants being a majority of that 3%. The good thing, I suppose, that opposed to America, nobody will ever approach me because I’m a foreigner; while in America many foreigners or immigrants can be just randomly approached or harassed.
Fashion is another big thing. It’s crucial as a young woman (which is... maybe a societal problem hmm) to dress up every day in something nice or at least fashionable when you attend classes. I’ve never seen anybody in something like just jeans and a T-shirt or hoodie. Usually it’s long pants or long skirts and nice blouses. Plus, most (sometimes it feels like.. 99%) of girls here wear makeup, while in America you can get away with not having to, obviously. Hair too! Girls and guys here style their hair every morning pretty much. It’s kind of sad to the people who just want to relax one day, because they look quite out of place compared to others. Again, this seems like it’s a slight societal problem. Luckily, more and more people are dyeing their hair crazy colors; but even then it’s about 1 in 200, and my university is quite liberal. In America it’s way more people nowadays.
Compared to America, there’s also WAY more integration of traditional culture within their pop culture or even just day to day life. Not America’s fault, since America is quite young compared to Japan! Images of traditional clothing, or even just walking in the city with tall buildings and suddenly there’s a small shrine near you; it’s very interesting as a history major :3
So yeah! Lots of differences, some good and some bad. TLDR, stuff is a little pricey here, fashion and presenting yourself every day the best you can is crucial, and Japan integrates history into their day-to-day life much more on average.

Can you afford being healthy?
So let’s say my goal is to have optimal health, both physical and mental, what should I do? Off the top of my head I’m thinking gym, organic food, green smoothies, psychotherapy, social life, maybe supplements. All of which sound very expensive compared to staying at home watching TV and eating corndogs. So for a long time, I thought I couldn’t afford taking care of my health. But then I had to, so I got creative.
Health is an investment
The first thing to keep in mind is that taking care of your health now will save you money (and trouble) in the future. Being sick is expensive: medication, hospital bills, missing work, etc. I try to remember that every time time I want to go for McDonalds instead of.. anything else really.. to save a buck.
Time to hang out with friends
Taking care of your mental health also means having a social life and leisure. What do you need for that? Time. Why don’t you have enough time? Mostly because of work. Why do you have to work so much? Because life is so fucking expensive. So my logic is: if I need less things, and if I spend less on things I have to buy, that means more time for me. I’ll summarize this in two words: thrift stores and simplicity.
First, go for simplicity
Try to buy less stuff and when you want to buy, ask yourself if you really need it, that’s basic. To avoid feeling in a place of scarcity and lack, think of something you really do want, and make it your goal, your reward. So instead of thinking “I shouldn’t buy this, I don’t absolutely need it. That sucks, I can’t have anything nice
” You could shift that to: “If I don’t buy this dress that I probably wouldn’t wear much, it means I’m $45 closer my trip to Bali :D”. Consistently doing this keep you exited about your goal because, how often do we want to buy things we don’t really need? That’s right, you’ll have your reward in mind very often.
Simplicity in your products
I think that a good first step to take towards health is eliminate toxicity. To do that, what often makes sense is to simplify: go for foods that have the less ingredients, or that are totally unprocessed. Same goes for cosmetics. Look for products that only contain a few ingredients that you can recognize, or if you’re so inclined, you can even make them yourself, thus, saving more money. So, weather it goes on your body or in your body, a healthy and cost effective solution is to buy ingredients in bulk and start cooking.
Save on food and reduce food waste with apps
Get this: you install an app on your phone (Flashfood is one but I’m sure there are a couple others), and it shows you products that are close to expiration date that groceries near you are selling at a discounted price. I can’t stand seeing food go to waste, and my cheap ass just loves save 50%, so this concept really is pure gold for me. These apps allow me to have access to meat that I couldn’t normally afford, which allows me to pursue my quest for the best diet for my body (I used to be a vegan, I’m now on an API diet, what’s next?!). You can find vegetables, bakery, seafood, anything. I’d say I buy 80% of my groceries through these apps now. Buying in bulk and cooking? Well that is possible with the apps. Having a truck load of bell peppers will sure spark your creativity, as you have to use them before they go bad.
Freeze food
That brings us to the freezer. If you can get a second-hand freezer (I suppose some models consume less electricity, you might want to look for these), that might be the best investment you make this year. Because if you’re half as obsessed as I am about health and simplicity, there’s just not enough room in your standard freezer for all that healthy food you’ll buy at a 50% discount. See where this is going? Buy basic ingredients in bulk, cook huge batches, freeze portions. You saved time and money and you get to eat as healthy as you want to.
DIY your skin and hair products
You’re lucky there is a big trend on DIY products right now, so recipes are easy to find for pretty much everything you want to make. There are some ingredients that have multiple uses, like castille soap or baking soda for instance, so these are a good choice for a starter kit. I tried making solid shampoo and I must say it’s very satisfying to successfully wash your hair with a shampoo you made with your own two hands! And to know you’re not sending chemicals in the water, and in your scalp. And not buying another plastic bottle. And throwing it away when empty. The shampoo bar cost approximately $7 and will last for.. I dunno like ten million showers. I also make my own face serum with two ingredients: jojoba oil and tea tree. Speaking of oil (sweet almond in this case), it’s the best and cheapest makeup remover, period. I used to buy very expensive natural face care products but I was frustrated that there was no visible improvement of my skin. I wanted to test them on half my face for a couple months to demonstrate how ineffective they actually were but I never had the required discipline. If you don’t see noticeable improvement in your face after using a product for a while, stop buying that shit and just rub your face with oil. Because the one you’re buying probably contains mostly oil anyway and the rest of the fancy ingredients are probably in traces amount and completely useless. And don’t even get me started on the non-natural products. Ew.
Get rid of plastic
They say (the same “they” I always talk about when I don’t have sources) that if you store food in plastic containers of drink out of plastic bottles, plastic gets in your body and can cause health problems, hormone imbalance and whatnot. A good alternative are glass containers. The tupperware style with lids can be pricey if you buy them new, so the strategy here is: no stress, buy just a couple at a time when you find them at the salvation army and gradually eliminate the plastic ones. When I say eliminate I mean re-purpose or give to good will. As good hippies, let’s try to produce less waste! There’s also the very trendy mason jar, so practical to store food and – Pinterest shows us every day – anything you can think of.
Drink the best possible water
I’ve heard that tap water contains traces of birth control pills, antidepressants, antibiotics, etc. I don’t have the expertise to know if it’s true but it did scare me. I’m the kind of hippie that will avoid taking a small innocent ibuprofen if I can. I don’t want drugs in my body, unless it’s going to be fun and psychedelic. I certainly have a lack of scientific evidence about traces of drugs in the city’s water supply but my nose and taste buds tell me that chlorine isn’t something I should drink. There’s also fluoride in the water, that is arguably bad for you. These are the reasons I decided to stop drinking tap water. What are the alternatives? I had a Brita but it doesn’t eliminate much of the bad stuff. Plus, it’s made of plastic. The high quality water filters are just ridiculously expensive so my only option was to buy bottled water. Not small bottles, the big ones that are reused when you bring them back to the store. It felt weird to buy water when there’s plenty in the tap but, my god, does it taste better. And I’ve read it hydrates you better too. Hydration is a key component of health, that’s for sure, so if you can’t afford to buy water, still, drink a liter a day, you’ll be healthier than if you let yourself dry like a raisin. I hesitated to make that water bottle move for a bit because I thought I needed to buy a water dispenser, but it turns out I don’t need it at all. I just leave the bottle on the counter and I got used really quickly to flip that giant heavy thing. Now I can pour myself a shot glass of water without spilling a drop. No need to buy a machine. Also, it’s best to drink it at room temperature, and it’s empty within a week of two so I figure it doesn’t have time to grow bacteria, or algae or whatever happens to water when you let it sit.
Sleeping is free
We underestimate the role that sleep has to play in our health so we often neglect it, but a good sleep hygiene can make a huge difference in your energy level, I’ve experienced it. I was always tired, couldn’t get through the day without a nap, couldn’t concentrate, I was unable to get up in the morning. Then a doctor prescribed that I take melatonin every night at 6 pm for two weeks, go to bed at 10, wake up at 7 and blast a light therapy lamp in my face for half an hour every morning. I did that and guess what? It. Worked. I didn’t follow the exact hours he prescribed and I’m not sure the melatonin had a good effect on me so I only took it for a couple days. So I think what does the trick is consistently waking up at the same time each morning, regardless of what time you go to bed. Occasionally I get only four hours of sleep and usually the next day I’d be unable to function. Now that I wake up at regular hours, I can go through the day and have so much energy that I even forget I got only 4 hours of sleep. A phrase he said about staying in bed later to catch up on you sleep stuck with me: it’s too hard for the system. It had not occurred to me that it could be difficult for the body to change its sleep schedule. I thought “as long as I get 8 hours I’m fine” or even “the more sleep the better, I’ll sleep 12 hours today”. So if you happen to have sleep problems, irregular sleep pattern or fatigue, set an alarm and get some light in the morning, see what happens. Hopefully your body will adjust to the schedule and you won’t need the alarm after a week, and your mornings will be less painful. Another thing I didn’t take seriously was avoiding blue light in the evening. But it turns out it’s serious, it really does mess with your natural sleep hormones. So I installed f.lux on all my screens. It’s an app that will cut the blue light out of your screen according to the time of day. My screen is yellow right now because I’m too silly to go to bed at a normal time, I prefer to write a blog post. I used to binge watch TV on my computer very late in the night and not feel tired. I realized after installing the app that it was the blue light that was keeping me up. Now I watch an episode and start to yawn, so that’s a good thing, less TV.
Meditation is free
According to every damn article I read or podcast I listen to, meditation is one of the healthiest thing you can do. Good news: all you have to do is sit there and breathe. Now that, you can afford. No time? A minute a day is still better than nothing. If you need a little help to begin, there are tons of free apps you can install. I use Breathe and Calm, which also has some nice sleep stories.
Functional training
Exercising at home requires more discipline, at least in my experience, but if you can pull it off, it means more money in your pocket. You don’t necessarily need those machines to have an effective workout. The weight of your body will do. Remember those good old push ups? Yep. YouTube will help you find some exercises ideas for what part of your body you want to work out. Weights can be found easily at thrift stores. Elastic bands offer multiple possibilities and are not too expensive. Cardio is important too so if running outside isn’t an option, because breathing smog will annihilate any benefits of working out, for instance, maybe look for a stationary bike in the ads.
You can still party
Even if you’ve decided that for health reasons, alcohol, sugar and carbs are to avoid, you can still allow yourself to have them every once in a while. Just don’t binge, and limit the damage. For example, I drink on rare but meaningful occasions and I choose low sugar and gluten free drinks like vodka-soda or gin-soda. Vodka is pretty much tasteless so that leaves you more drinks possibilities. (plus, you can DIY perfume using vodka: avoiding chemicals on your skin and saving $200, yay)! Sugar in food now. It’s always best to choose natural sugars like honey, instead or refined sugar, or use stevia. Man, stevia is the best: it tastes like sugar, but it’s not. It’ll make your food taste sweet and do zero damage. Buy in a giant bottle to save money. Hell, you could even grow your own stevia plant! Let’s go crazy! You can also pour a drop in your vodka. Now that’s starting to look like a party to me! The use of the word honey and saving money just made me think of a fine browser extension you can use for online shopping. So, where were we. Sugar. When I stopped eating sugar, I bought dark unsweetened chocolat in bulk, thinking it would taste like dark 70% chocolate. Oh, was I wrong. It tastes bitter. But it’s cheap to buy in bulk and I can control what goes into it, so from time to time I like to melt some in a pan, add stevia and eat that with bananas.

24 Hours
I woke up in the dark, cocooned by cardboard boxes. I sent signals to my toes to wiggle, as I breathed in deeply. My arms were across my chest, vampire-like, not for any effect, but out of need within the cramped space. My combat boots were by my feet, removed to prevent sweating and rot. I had propped my head up the night before with my duffel bag, full of clothes, and had fallen asleep with a knife in my hand, but it had since dropped by my left side. For warmth I had my leather jacket, and the garbage bags lining the cardboard boxes that I had fitted together, like a kid would connect straws, forcing one end inside of another. I grabbed my knife before I crawled out of the boxes, slithering and jerking to free myself, seeing the gray light of morning and feeling the fresh, crisp air on my nostrils and in my lungs. I stood slowly, stretching out the stiffness, a by product of sleeping on the hard surface, and then grabbed the boxes, shaking my boots loose and onto the rooftop. I had a very simple philosophy when it came to homelessness; disappear. Rooftops, storm drains, abandoned buildings. Any place where people tend not to rest their gaze, or even consider. I stayed away from the shelters because of the thieves and violence. I kept clear of the tent cities, as I liked my privacy. I had been squatting with a couple of other people in an abandoned building, but everyone had moved on, so the solo methods kicked in. Not that I minded. I needed some alone time to clear my head, to revert to a more natural, animalistic state, where the only concern was survive. Any other thoughts were subsumed by a primal directive-be invisible as much as possible. I put on my jacket and the boots, then broke the boxes down. I had the boxes the night before, from the Subway sandwich shop on P Street. They kept them behind a gate in the alley that I had to climb over to get to, but I was fairly agile, and light. I had scaled more than one rooftop, shimmying up pipes and ladders. After I had thrown the boxes over the gate, I raided the trash cans, looking for fairly clean garbage bags. The garbage bags kept the heat in, and the rain out. I had used a dumpster to climb onto the roof with the boxes and bags, then assembled my makeshift hotel. Now I had to reverse the process. Leave no trace. Become the Nowhere Man. After I had surveyed the ground around the roof I jumped down to the dumpster, then the hard concrete of the alley. I was not a great jumper, and always felt the jarring impact. I threw the boxes back over the gate, and shoved the garbage bags into the dumpster. I was ready to start the day now. I walked out of the alleyway, looking for signs from the traffic to tell the time of day. The sun was creeping slowly, illuminating the top floors of the buildings more than the streets, and the traffic was intermittent. I knew the flood of the morning commute would come quickly, bringing the attendant foot traffic. I had successfully grown in tune with the environment, waking in time to get what I needed. I had a couple of minutes to get across Dupont Circle and start panhandling. Dupont was slowly coming to life, with a few cars making their way and a couple of walkers, spread out and moving in different directions. I stepped across the circle in a matter of moments, heading to my favorite corner in front of Vesuvio’s Pizza. The foot traffic was becoming fuller, so I waited. A commuter bought a paper and I asked him if I could grab one before the door locked shut on the box. He said sure, and as he walked off, I grabbed all of the papers, intending to sell them for less. As the street filled, I began to panhandle. “Spare change? I’m tryin’ ta get somethin’ to eat.” If they said no, or ignored me, I’d offer, “Newspaper! 10 cents!” A couple of the working stiffs laughed at that, but only a couple bought them. I had tested the market and found it lacking, so decided never to do that again. After the streets had quieted again, outside of the steady motor traffic, I had made about 15 bucks. Not bad for 45 minutes of work, but not as lucrative as the day before. I was happy to disengage, to end interaction with a different world than my own. To them, I was an anomaly, a misplaced piece of gravel, rough and broken, on a pristine walkway. To me, they were a horde, in pressed shirts, with the alcohol smell of mouthwash covering their base nature. I didn’t hate them. I didn’t like them. They were one of several currents in the flowing river of the city, useful for fishing out a few dollars in the morning. I needed a shower. The heat of the day before, plus the natural oils my body produced in the evening had left me with that not so fresh feeling. My working friends who would let me shower and often crash, were out earning the money that gave them the ability to afford such things as showers, and shelter. I needed something more immediate. The hotel. Getting in required waiting for the lobby to clear. There was a single bathroom behind the front desk, near the restaurant, that I had used before. The odds of getting caught were high, which I didn’t like, but I didn’t want to compound the stench I was developing throughout the day, plus I had to brush my teeth. The lobby cleared, and I walked quickly through the glass door, and made a bee line for the bathroom. I opened the wooden door for the toilet, then closed and locked it behind me. I had to move quickly. I ruffled through my bag to find my toothbrush, and a set of clean clothes. I stripped naked and shoved my dirty clothes into a plastic grocery bag before putting them into the duffel. I had to keep them separate so the odor would not transfer. They would be washed in a bath tub or a laundry mat later. I ran the toothbrush under the water, then the soap dispenser, and shoved it into my mouth. I scrubbed my teeth vigorously. I put the toothbrush back into the ziploc, and tossed it into the duffel. My heart rate was elevated, so I took a deep breath. “Move precisely, but calmly.” I told myself, forcing my heart and mind to slow down. I took a step toward the paper towel dispenser. It was full of the stiff, brown paper, in a single roll. I started hitting the lever over and over, creating a long trail of paper. I took the paper and ripped it into several pieces, which I balled up. I grabbed one of them and got it wet in the faucet, then put it under the soap dispenser. I rubbed the soap into the wad, then washed myself. I had to repeat the process several times to get everything, then had to do it again sans soap, to wash the soap off. The final step was cleanup. Leave no trace. The whole process probably took 10-15 minutes. Before I could get dressed someone knocked on the door. “Who’s in there?” “I’ll be done in a minute.” I said, as calmly as possible. I had almost made it, and didn’t like the intrusion. I started dressing quickly, happy to at least have gotten clean before being discovered. “Open the door! You don’t belong in there!” “Hold on.” I said as I put my boots on. I knew I had to open the door, and didn’t know who I was going to face. I laced my boots up, listening to the voice on the other side of the door become more angry and demanding. I stood up, took a breath, let it out, and opened the door. The man on the other side stared awkwardly. I stood there, in my boots and leather jacket, with my bag over my shoulder, staring back at him, every sense alive. He was blocking the doorway. “You don’t belong in here!” I walked toward him, silently, without hesitation. He stepped back, not sure what to do, which created the space I needed to walk past him. I could feel his presence as I brushed by, and it was inconsequential. He wasn’t going to do anything. I headed for the door, my momentum carrying me into another moment devoid of the encounter. The man screamed at my back, but his words had no meaning. I hit the bright street, full of sunshine, and made my way to Habib’s. I can’t remember if the store was actually called Habib’s, but Habib ran it, and he never carded any of us. He also sold the cheapest vodka in town. I bought a pint for later, and hid it in my leather jacket, the inside pocket. I had some vodka at Johnny’s, but I needed a pint bottle, and 2 bucks was nothing. Next was breakfast. I walked over to the McDonald’s and grabbed a couple of biscuits, and water. The spot in front of the grocery store across the street was a good panhandling spot, if you didn’t get booted. I could make 30-40 bucks in a couple of the afternoon hours, but I had what I needed. I wandered the city for a few hours, making my way down to the record shop. I flipped through the CD’s, records, and books, staring at the things I would never buy. Back on the street, I stared at faces that had their own stories, or non-stories. Vacant eyes and lives. I couldn’t fathom being them. I headed downtown, hoping to hit the food truck. I was now in full public territory. None of my friends were close by. This wasn’t my neighborhood. The bums and assorted crazies were out in force, so I knew I had to watch my back. Years ago, I felt more at home on this side of town. I had been running with a crowd of around ten homeless kids. I say “around” because people would come and go. As a pack, we were unstoppable. The other homeless weren’t organized, so weren’t a threat. The crazies were always a threat, but ten beats one. Tourists were harmless, and we would either find ways to amuse ourselves by tormenting them, ignore them, or we would panhandle. One of our favorite methods for getting money from them was to charge them for pictures. If we caught one taking our picture we would turn our backs to them. If they persisted in trying to photograph us we would surround them and tell them they didn’t have our permission to take our pictures. This was a lie. They didn’t legally need our permission, but they were usually compliant when we told them it would cost them a dollar. One nice guy actually bought us lunch, and we sat eating with his family. Now, here I was alone, surveying the congregation, waiting for the food truck to deliver the life sustaining Eucharist. The disheveled masses, dirty and unwashed. A veritable Babylon of humanity, muttering to each other and themselves, all hoping for more than the normal sandwich. If we scored a cup of soup we were lucky. The sandwiches were anemic at best, and tasted better dipped in the soup. The problem with the soup was if they ran out. The guy in line when that would happen would inevitably raise hell. I didn’t give a shit. It wasn’t like I was paying. I got in line. A dirty rasta guy got in behind me. He started talking shit almost immediately, and my hackles raised. I turned my head to him, only to discover that his vitriol was directed at my jacket. He was having a conversation with the words on my coat. “BLITZ. THE FINAL SOLUTION. RAZORS IN THE NIGHT.” Blitz was an Oi! band from England. The other words were titles of songs. I decided to ignore him, but stayed on the alert in case he decided my coat was shit talking his mother. I finally got my food. It consisted of a flimsy peanut butter sandwich, and the treasured cup of soup. I walked away from the group, wanting to distance myself, not just from the potential issues, but the smell. I wanted to eat without gagging on the air around me, so I chose an isolated spot in the grass. It wasn’t isolated for long. A native American guy sat down to the right of me, which piqued my interest, as I’d always been fascinated by American Indian cultures. He was shirtless, long hair, mid 20’s, from what I could tell. He had a tattoo that read, “DOG SOLDIER.” I knew the Dog Soldiers were a warrior band, but I didn’t know which nation they belonged to, so I asked. “Cheyenne.” he answered, focused on eating. He was soon followed by a black man, who sat to his right. Things looked like they might get interesting. I was looking forward to whatever conversation followed. It didn’t happen. We were interrupted by a large black man screaming. “You ain’t homeless, cracka! You just takin’ from us!” We all looked at him, as he stared at me. Shit. “Why you muthafuckas sittin’ wit’ that white boy?” The black man who had sat with us told him to shut the fuck the up. I started to devour my food. “Lookit him eatin’ our food!” The black man near us got up. “I told you to shut the fuck up!” As they started fighting, the Cheyenne and I got up, and left in different directions, with me shoveling food into my face. I watched the fight as I left. It wasn’t too serious. The interloper was afraid of the man who had sat near us, and kept backing up, out of distance. Either way, I didn’t want police attention, so just kept walking back toward Dupont Circle. I appreciated the man standing up, but it seemed that they knew each other, and a lot of it had to do with him being tired of hearing his shit. I didn’t need the complications or chaos. Once back, I lazily panhandled, more to occupy my time until John came home. When he did, I walked over to his apartment. I drank some of the vodka and orange juice I had left there, until I felt loose and warm. Our evening plans were simple, a regular routine. Hit the club two blocks away and drink the night away. This meant listening to shitty industrial music all night, probably played by DJ Mohawk Adam. There was a dirth of punk clubs in the early 90’s, and very few punks living in the city. Most of the clubs played industrial. The goth and industrial folks were nice enough, and some of them were cool, including Adam, but I hated that fucking music. I had watched a live video of Ministry’s, and liked it well enough. It was a good show. My problem was the problem all people have with the music that follows theirs, it seems like it all sounds the same. Either way, open bar was open bar, and people usually bought me drinks afterward. The bartender would throw some free ones my way, plus I had my pint of vodka in my pocket. I had no fear of being searched by the bouncers, and usually got in on the guest list. I was going to drink my mind away. We spent the night glued to the bar. When open bar ended I ordered some water, chugged it, then went into the bathroom and filled the glass with my vodka. When that was depleted, I had some drinks sent my way from various people, and finished the night earlier than usual, tired of the noise, and physically drained from walking all day, and a poor diet. On my way out, someone told me about the Rodney King verdict. Rodney King was a criminal, and had led the police on a chase, before being apprehended and thoroughly beaten on the street by them. The police were acquitted, which set off rioting in L.A., and apparently there were roving bands of blacks causing mayhem all over D.C. “Be careful.” Red Steve said as I left. I was only going a block over to my rooftop, so wasn’t too concerned. I hit the street and breathed in the night air. It wasn’t fresh. The smell of smoke lingered, and a helicopter was flying low nearby. My senses came alive. I was instantly sober. I passed one alley and saw a group of about 5 black males on the other side of the block. One of them yelled, “We gonna fuck up some white folks tonight!” The proclamation was met with shouts of approval. I hurried past the alley before they could see me, and ran down the street to the alley where I slept, where I accessed the roof. I jumped the cage and gathered my boxes, stopping periodically to listen for trouble. The helicopter was closer. I knew I couldn’t get trapped in the cage and had to get to the roof. I climbed back out, grabbed some garbage bags, without the care for cleanliness that I normally used. I threw everything on top of the dumpster, climbed up, then threw it all on the roof. I assembled everything quickly. My bag was at John’s, so I used my jacket for my pillow. For added warmth, I tucked my arms into my shirt. I listened to the noise of city; the traffic, the shouting. I closed my eyes, and let the sound of the helicopters rotors sing me into a fitful sleep.
I woke the next morning, hung over, and in need of water. I was exhausted from not sleeping well. I crawled out from the boxes, and sat there for a moment, restoring needed oxygen to my body. I stared at the gray light, slowly brightening, looked at the sky, and wondered what was waiting for me today.

Our last stop for this summer is in MIMAROPA, the longest and most expensive trip by far. The cheapest we could get is a fixed overnight trip as joiners. On this last hurrah, I am with my boyfriend and sister again.
We got there via land transportation, a huge van to fit 14 heads of travellers.
We hadn’t a good experience from our organizer but nature has its way of redeeming our mood.
After a long butt-hurt drive from Manila, we arrived at around 6:00 in the morning and had a quick breakfast at the General Luna port for boats going to Maniwaya Island located in Sta. Cruz, Marinduque. It was low-tide so we had to use a small boat to transfer into the big one. We’re quite not prepared for that though. All our stuff were dripping with water because of the huge splash that welcomed us en route to our big boat.
We headed off after filling the boat with our fellow sojourners. We secured the sit near the captain on the side edge of the boat so we can free our legs down. It amused me to see how the captain navigates the direction when all you can see is a vast form of water. He knows exactly where is where when I can hardly even tell if we’re moving because the view doesn’t change at all - until the water turns into a different clarity and color.
It took around 30-45 minutes before our touchdown to the Island. We pitched our tent in Pielago Beach. They have fanned rooms (kubo) but of course, where’s the fun if we had to have comfort and luxury? Since it’s also an arranged itinerary, it already included our meals and it’s not some self-service kind of meals. You have to sit together with your fellow travelers and share the food.
This is what I love about being a joiner, getting around and eating together with strangers. You get to see more of people transparently when things get tough on the trip. There’s this irate tita who doesn’t like noise and judges everyone in the place except us; a kind couple who brings the ate-kuya vibe; instagram couple and the jolly human as everyone’s ball of happiness and humour.
I’m quite an observant person so I’m particular with the details and smallest gestures of the people I am hanging around. Sometimes, it frustrating but at least I get to learn how to approach a person in way that won’t start a fire.
As we finished lunch and setting everything up at the beach front, we went on our Island Hopping. First, we visited Mongpong Island to see the Ungab Rock Formation. This is so far the trip I saw my sister the happiest. I urged her to climb up the Rock Formation and be accompanied by Chris. I watched them from afar while cheering them to get on top. I couldn’t explain that simple fulfilment I felt after seeing her dance when she made it on top. Sigh. What a sight.
The second island stop is the Palad Sand Bar. Unfortunately, we haven’t had a good shot of the “Sand Bar” because it was damn crowded. We were only there waiting for everyone to finish their photo ops. Anyway, our third and last stop regained our energy and hype. We went snorkelling and fed the fishes at the sanctuary of Taclobo viewing site. There again, seeing my little sister all smiles doubled my happiness.

Man, I’m the softest person when it comes to this human. We went back to Pielago at around 3:30 or 4:00PM for refresh and free time. Their restrooms are 10/10 neat BUT do not expect fresh water. While they have faucets, the water seems unfiltered coming from the ocean. It’s salty and not totally refreshing since you have to deal with its sticky feel in your skin.
They also have a convenient store and the outlets in the unoccupied fanned rooms are free to use for charging. However, signal and electricity are pretty inconsistent. So it’s better to bring a fully-charged powerbank and a handy rechargeable fan with flashlight.
Of course, to end our day, we didn’t want to miss the sunset.
The weather was too humid at that time and you can hardly feel a wind. Thus, we were sweating all night and have to fully open the windows of our tent. We didn’t have a chance to shoot a long exposure because ironically, it was cloudy.
Our organizer asked if anybody wants to stroll around and explore the Island via habal-habal. No one joined after knowing the rate. It’s like around 300-400php per head as far as I remember? We agreed to spend more free time at the beach until our pack up by 10:00AM instead.
We left the Island by then and I can say that all expenses are worth it. As we drove back to Manila, we had a side trip to a Sun Flower Garden. A not so amusing garden but the 50php entrance didn’t hurt.
What we love about this Island is that it has clear turquoise water and living corals that you can see through. This is the farthest province I have been this summer; really no regrets for splurging on a gorgeous nature and fulfilling trip as you see someone you love at her happiest moment. Success!

🍓BAGUIO City 2022: Solo for 3-days!
Are you a fan of cold & chilling weather with light rain pouring? That sky's full of clouds and dimmed day? When you walk you feel that cold touch of the breeze? Then YOU NEED TO VISIT BAGUIO CITY IN AUGUST (August - November)!
I'm so bummed and pissed off in these hot and sweaty weeks in Bulacan. Yes, It's raining but let's be honest here... Even if it rains, it's still HOT. My AC keeps me sane these days. That's why I immediately started a plan when I saw a post about Baguio City! And I'm going to share it with you guys. 🍓
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
🍓Check Bus Stations that have the Baguio City trips. For me, I choose Victory Liner. There's also Genesis and Joyous which are excellent for a deluxe experience. As for me, I went on a regular bus aircon which cost less. Check this link for more information about Victory Liner trips. This cost me 485 PHP. The roundtrip would x2 the cost.
🍓Check Baguio City's accommodation. There are a lot of apps that can help you find the best and cheapest accommodations. I used Facebook, Agoda, and Air BnB. Air BnB got me the best accommodation for me, it's near the City center and has cheap taxi fees(Around 70-80PHP) + it has a great balcony and view and the house is comfortable. This cost me 3,999 PHP for 3 nights.
🍓Budget your food expenses. Foods in Baguio aren't so far from the prices in Manila, there are cafeterias around and convenience stores for your budget meals. So expect that your meal expense should play around 100-250 PHP. But if you have a really expensive taste then prepare 500 PHP a meal.
(3 meals x 250) x 3 days = 2,250 PHP

🍓Budget your pasalubong. If you're really on a tight budget, then I suggest minimizing your pasalubong. Anything in bulk is cheap if you're haggling. As for me, I only bought 2 shirts, 3 Baguio accessories, 4 strawberry wines, 4 strawberry jams, and 2 snacks that cost me an overall of 1,890 PHP.
🍓Plan your itinerary for tourist spots. The way I organized how I visit the tourist spots here in Baguio City is by their location.
On my first day at Baguio, I visited Mirador's Hill - Lady Lourdes Grotto - Burnham Park - SM City order. This way I can lessen the taxi fees from traveling to point A to B and also take advantage of the near places. At night I went to Night Market(NM) which starts at 8 PM until 12 AM. This cost me 300 PHP to get around + an Environmental fee of 100 PHP at Mirador's Hill + Burnham Park Boat 300 PHP + Night Market at your expense. Be sure to be early @NM since rare items at the lowest price(50-100 PHP) get sold out immediately.
On my second day at Baguio, I visited Botanical Garden - Wright Park - The Mansion - Mines View - Good Sheperd. You can actually use a jeepney for transportation and it'll cost you less than a taxi, but for me, I like traveling privately. From Botanical Garden, I walked to Wright Park and rode a horse then walked to the Mansion. Then used a taxi again to travel to Mines View and Good Sheperd. This cost me 500 PHP to get around + an Entrance fee of 10 PHP at Botanical Garden + Wright Park Horseback Ride 250 PHP.
On my third day at Baguio, I went to rest and at night, I visited HillBilly's restaurant and bar instead of the famous Baguio Craft Brewery. A Tour of Cambridge’s (cheaper) Grocery Stores
As summer draws to a close and I prepare to move from Maseeh to East Campus, I must face the fact that I may no longer rely sporadic shopping trips and my weekly Interphase TechCASH allowance to sustain me. Armed with a tote bag, no sunscreen, and not even close to enough water, I embarked on a 6-mile trek around the city and into Somerville to check out where I may acquire wholesome and affordable provisions.
The Targets:
Dollar Tree - Not a regular shopping destination, to be sure, but reputed to sell staple foods in reasonable quantities as well as very cheap snacks.
Star Market - There used to be one on Mass Ave, but it closed earlier this year. The nearest one is in the same shopping plaza as Dollar Tree.
Market Basket - The furthest store on the list, it’s a standard American grocery store with incredibly inexpensive produce.
Trader Joe’s - Popular among MIT students for a reason, it offers extraordinarily healthy options in an accessible location.

As expected, Dollar Tree’s selection wasn’t fantastic. However, it does boast a surprising variety of shelf-stable foods, including tofu (I didn’t know that was a thing??) and milk. It’s a decent enough place to get started if you don’t already have food and aren’t willing to invest a ton into staples--it has spices, oils, dried beans, boxed rice, pasta, cake mixes, oatmeal, peanut butter, cereal, and a ton of snacks that Hmart would probably sell at about 3x the price. Some of the products are “accidentally vegan” as well. Be diligent, though: there is not much nutritional value to be found in Dollar Tree food and if you do try to live off of its non-perishables, you yourself with almost surely perish.
Star Market
Distance from Maseeh: 1.3 mi/27 min on foot
Maybe I’m just the only one who likes to spend entire Sundays grocery shopping, but Star Market was insanely quiet--even more so than Dollar Tree. It’s very large (as supermarkets often are) as compared to Hmart and has a considerably wider selection of products, including a magnificent vegetarian/vegan refrigerated section. Its produce is somewhat cheaper than Hmart’s, though it does carry some more expensive varieties, like passionfruit, kiwano melon, and starfruit. It also has a ton of organic options.

HOLY WOW FINALLY FOOD THAT I CAN AFFORD
I was very, very excited to check out Market Basket. Even though it’s all the way in Somerville, I would seriously consider returning if the weather is nice enough. The packaged goods were priced reasonably enough, but the produce prices were unbeatable--at most half the cost of Whole Foods or Hmart produce. They did have vegan cheese, but that was it in terms of “alternative” diets--I didn’t notice any faux-meat products or tofu for sale. But back to the produce. It was all super affordable and really nice quality. I couldn’t help myself and I bought a bunch of fruit (which I quickly devoured. Walking is hard work, okay?). It was seriously better than what Hmart sells.
Market Basket also had a decidedly different culture from the stores in and closer to Cambridge. Not only was it packed, everyone there had a stuffed shopping cart and appeared to be stocking up for a large family, especially on packaged foods. The lack of vegan options was more than replaced by a lot of frozen, processed meals. I got a much-needed reminder that not everyone near MIT has the option to shop when and how they please nor the means to eat healthily. We still have work to do.
Trader Joe’s:
Distance from Maseeh: 1.4 mi/27 min on foot/13 minutes by grocery shuttle
Ah, Trader Joe’s. My old standby. Considerably more affordable than Hmart or Whole Foods, it boasts a huge selection of vegan options, from faux-milks and tofu to meat substitutes to packaged snacks. No Halo Top, as far as I could tell, but that’s more than made up for by all the prrrooooootteeeeeiiiiinnnzzz for we plant-based fellows. The produce was definitely more expensive and not as varied as that at Market Basket, but it’s all much cheaper than Hmart or Whole Foods.
Final Verdict:
Veg*n-Friendly: Trader Joe’s wins by a landslide in this regard. Many of its products are animal-free and don’t even advertise it, and many more shout that quality from the rooftops. There are plenty of packaged goods like legume-based pastas, canned and dried beans, and grains for in addition to the faux-meats, and even some frozen-meal options.
Cheapest Produce: Market Basket, hands-down. If it were closer to school, I’d go at minimum twice a week. I’d feel like a nutrient-blessed goddess all day, every day.
Cheapest Snacks: Dollar Tree. Its options are limited, but if you’re trying to feed a crowd on a very limited budget I strongly advise checking here first for chips and cookies.
Widest Variety: Star Market. It has everything under the sun (coincidentally, a star).
Overall:
As much as I love Market Basket, its distance is a huge impediment. If I could get there via public transportation I would, but the bottom line is I simply don’t have ninety-plus minutes to travel to and from the grocery store, especially if that travel is on foot during the winter, and MIT’s transportation system wouldn’t get me there much faster.
Hmart and Whole Foods are always options, but the former is very expensive and the latter is both expensive and nowhere near close enough to justify the cost (though it does sell Halo Top for $4.99/pint, vs. $6.49 at LaVerde’s. Don’t ask me why I remember this and not Stoke’s Theorem).
Therefore, my go-to grocery store shall be Trader Joe’s. MIT has a grocery shuttle that goes straight to it, which I assume will be much nicer than trekking all the way from East Campus, where I’ll be moving this week(!). Though I have no doubt that I’ll start every semester with a vow to eat healthy and make a weekly trip to Market Basket and end it living of Halo Top and Clif Bars from LaVerde’s.
