The Real Cost Of Convenience
The other day I went through my weekly flyers, did some online snooping, and made a list of all my local deals that would help feed my family healthy fresh foods on the limited budget we have. We've been trying to feed our family of 3 whole foods and proteins for less than $100 a week. What started as a simple hunt for sales to stock up, ended up turning into a huge eye-opening lesson on convenience and our health. Please let our family's shopping trip and findings not only inspire you to eat healthier at a lower cost, but also open your eyes on the real cost of convenience on our health and wallets.
To summarize my findings, it turns out that we could buy over TWO TIMES the amount of vegetables that would feed us for a month (or more) STILL for less than opting for convenient, already-prepped frozen veggie alternatives. I spent $33.61 on fresh veggies to chop up and freeze, and after some research, the cheapest alternatives listed online equaled out to $75.64 for a nearly identical amount of frozen veggies (I accounted for the veggie waste difference). Which means I am cutting my vegetable grocery bill in half! That is absolutely insane. Keep in mind this amount of veggies would feed my family of 3 for a month at the price and amount I've already spent. Which means I could get about 2 months of food for my family for the price of 1 month of convenient, frozen options. This leaves us so much more room to invest in quality grass-fed red meat and pasture-raised poultry, so we can elevate our health and diet without spending more out of pocket. So, if you would like more affordable and healthy options for food in your house, I highly recommend looking for deals on fresh vegetables and stocking up when you are able to, rather than opting for the easy to grab and prepare option off the shelves. Eating healthy does not have to be expensive and is actually really affordable for families. Your health and wallet will thank you.
I plan to do more cost comparison and snooping around to see what else I can uncover and tips that I can give you all to elevate your lives in the future, but for now, here is a breakdown of where I shopped and what I spent, versus the cost of the cheapest convenient, frozen options of similar poundage online (after processing to account for veggie waste):

Lesser known budget cooking tips
So many budget cooking tips are just things like “eat less meat!” and “only buy what you need!” and “buy the supermarket own brand!”
This advice is obvious, and most people looking for budget cooking advice are already doing it. In this post I will write some lesser known tips which are likely to give better results.
1. The cheapest way to get carbs is to make your own bread. The quickest way to do this is to make flatbreads. All you need is some flour (currently 69p for 1.5kg at Aldi; you only need like 50g at once), a pinch of salt (negligible money), and water from the tap. Make a dough (adjust flour and water until it is dough-like), knead until stretchy, leave it to rest for a bit (not essential step, can be skipped), roll/stretch it into a flatbread shape, and fry it in a dry frying pan for a minute or two on each side.
This may be more effort than buying bread, but it’s a fun thing to try if you happen to have a bit more time than money.
2. The cheapest way to get herbs is to forage them. For example, go to a churchyard and you’ll find loads of rosemary. Go around where you live, smell the plants, take pictures, look them up to see if you can eat them, and if so, eat them. (You can also get your very own rosemary bush by propagating a cutting. Easy to do, if slow. Look up directions online!)
3. Second cheapest way to get herbs - grow them. Around autumn or winter, go to a garden centre, and buy a packet of seeds reduced to clear. I got a huge pack of parsley seeds for 30p! Now have parsley growing out my ears. This is only cheap if you have access to soil though. You can also re-pot the potted herbs from supermarkets - hoping everyone saw that tiktok of the guy saying the reason they always die quickly is they are too many plants cramped together in too small a pot.
As for growing other stuff, it only helps you save on groceries if you have the space to do it large-scale. But it’s fun so do it anyway. (This tip was quite well known but i’m including it in order to propagandise gardening)
4. Cooking bacon is often mentioned as the cheapest meat (It’s about £1/kg i think). However I’ve never seen that in the shops. What I have seen is a kg of frozen sausages from tesco for about £1.50. This is excellent value even if you consider that they’re only 42% meat.
The cheapest fish is basa (catfish), and don’t listen to the haters: it’s delicious in both taste and texture (and £1.79 for 3 frozen filets from ALDI right now).
5. Another uncommonly mentioned cheap meat is chicken paste. Or fish paste. It’s 42p for a little jar that contains a lot of protein! It gives me the shivers but I think it’s worth promoting more widely.
On the other hand, one which doesn’t give me the shivers and which is great value protein is mini pork pies - these are very frequently reduced to clear in smaller supermarkets.
6. The cheapest vegetables are still carrots and potatoes, and the cheapest fruit is still bananas. However, the price of bananas has increased, so now if other fruits are on a good offer, it’s possible for them to be cheaper than the 18p per fruit which bananas now cost. Have seen apples at this price.
7. Don’t buy things for the store cupboard. I’m always tempted to buy in advance stuff like cereal and tea and pasta and rice and tins. However, having stuff in the cupboard doesn’t seem to save money on future shops at all. Even if I’m buying multiple e.g. boxes of cereal because they’re on offer. The reality is that I just eat a lot more cereal when I have more in the house.
I think it’s helpful to have to use up all the food you bought last week before you go on next week’s shop. This often compels you to have a random using-up dinner, which is always a good idea. Pay no heed to conventional ideas of which foods go together.
8. An alternative to sweets when you’re feeling snacky: make some buttercream with margarine and icing sugar, put it in the fridge or freezer, and enjoy. Can also add cocoa powder to make chocolate buttercream. Super sweet and way cheaper for the amount you can get out of a box of icing sugar.
Instead of buying baked goods, make cookies. Similarly, instead of buying cereal bars, make flapjacks.
9. The only food I’ve had to throw away in the last year has been mushrooms that have gone mouldy quicker than I anticipated. Watch out for those sneaky blighters.
10. If you are a porridge enjoyer, and you enjoy your porridge with milk, then use whole milk rather than semi-skimmed. You can replace the amount of semi-skimmed milk you would use with half the amount of whole milk, topped up with water, and get a porridge with the same level of creaminess.
The same applies for white sauce/cheese sauce for pasta bake. Doesn’t apply for milk to drink on its own though (watered down whole milk does NOT taste like semi skimmed, it tastes like watered down whole milk).
Same principle also applies for cheese (the principle being ‘semi-skimmed and whole milk are the same price’; so too are mature and extra-mature cheddars). Buy the strongest possible cheese to add to cheese sauces and pasta bake, as you will need to add less for more flavour.
Of everything I’ve mentioned in this tip, only the porridge milk substitute has saved me money, as when I was doing this I ate porridge every day and measured how much milk I used. The other examples are extensions of the principle which I can’t guarantee would save money in practice.
Having porridge for breakfast is also a very good idea when it comes to saving money as it fills you up for pennies. You knew that though.
11. Cheap meals generally take forms like:
- cheesy pasta bake with one vegetable in it (e.g. broccoli, peas, sweetcorn)
- lentil stew with one vegetable in it (e.g. carrots, peppers, spinach)
- rice with a single vegetable stir-fried (e.g. mushrooms, aubergine, reduced-to-clear 30p stir-fry veg bag)
- rice and beans (check out jack monroe’s chilli)
I save most money when I’m mainly eating this kind of thing.
Also some people don’t realise that you can cook rice in a saucepan just like you cook pasta. It is not at all tricky.
12. Leftovers are your friend if and only if you have the willpower to avoid eating them for breakfast or midnight snack. Otherwise they are your ENEMY!
13. Don’t buy drinks (apart from tea bags and squash). Fresh juice and smoothies will lead you astray.
I will consider this post my repository of knowledge and may add to it.

Conversations with Dad: Smart Shopping with Zorabian Chicken Products
Dad always had a knack for making shopping trips not just efficient but also educational. Whether it was teaching us the art of comparing prices or finding the best quality, his wisdom shone through, especially when it came to food choices. One of his favorite topics during our grocery outings was how to smartly shop while saving money and time, and one brand that often made its way into our cart was Zorabian Chicken Products.
Saving Money with Zorabian Chicken: “Dad, why do we always buy Zorabian Chicken?” I once asked, curious about his choice. He smiled, a twinkle in his eye that always preceded a lesson. “Son, quality matters. Zorabian ensures their chickens are raised in the best conditions, which means healthier meat for us. And healthier meat means we save money in the long run on healthcare costs.”
He went on to explain that while Zorabian might seem slightly more expensive upfront, the value it provided in terms of nutritional benefits and taste far outweighed the cost. “Plus,” he added, “they have a range of products that cater to different needs — whether it’s marinated cuts for a quick dinner or premium chicken cuts for a special occasion, they have it all.”

Saving Time with Convenient Choices: “Dad, why not just buy any chicken?” I questioned on another occasion, as we navigated the aisles. “Time, son,” he replied promptly. “Time is the most valuable thing we have. Zorabian’s pre-cut and pre-marinated options save us time in the kitchen. We can focus on cooking delicious meals without spending hours prepping ingredients.” He emphasized how these products fit seamlessly into our busy lives, allowing us to whip up gourmet-style dishes without the hassle. “Remember the last barbecue we had?” he asked, recalling the family gathering. “The marinated chicken from Zorabian made it a breeze to prepare. Everyone loved it, and we spent more time enjoying each other’s company.”

Smart Shopping Insights: As our shopping trips continued, I began to appreciate Dad’s approach to smart shopping more and more. Beyond just buying what’s cheapest, he taught me the importance of considering quality, health benefits, and convenience. Zorabian Chicken Products became a staple in our household not just because of their reputation but because they aligned with Dad’s principles of value and efficiency.
“Son,” Dad said one day, summing up his philosophy, “smart shopping isn’t about cutting corners — it’s about making informed choices that benefit us in the long term. Whether it’s saving money or saving time, Zorabian helps us do both without compromising on quality.”
As I reflect on those conversations with Dad, I realize that his lessons on smart shopping with Zorabian Chicken Products weren’t just about groceries — they were about making thoughtful decisions that enhance our lives. And for that, I’m grateful for the memories shared and the wisdom imparted, one grocery trip at a time.

From Clicks to Kicks: Navigating the World of Online Shoe Shopping in the UAE
In recent years, the digital realm has become a bustling marketplace, offering everything from groceries to gadgets with just a few clicks. Among the many categories experiencing a surge in popularity is online shoe shopping. This trend is particularly pronounced where consumers embrace the convenience and variety virtual storefronts offer. Whether you are searching for sleek sneakers or chic heel sandals for women, the online landscape promises an extensive selection to suit every taste and occasion.
Convenience and Accessibility:
Gone are the days of battling traffic or braving crowded malls searching for the perfect pair of shoes. With shoe online shopping in the UAE, convenience reigns supreme from the comfort of your couch or while on the go; shoppers can peruse an endless array of options with just a few taps on their smartphones or clicks of a mouse. This accessibility means that online shoe shopping offers unparalleled convenience, whether you are a busy professional, a parent with little ones in tow, or simply someone who values their time.
Variety and Selection:
One of the most exciting aspects of shoe online shopping in the UAE is the sheer variety of options available. From international brands to local designers, the digital marketplace is a treasure trove of styles, colors, and sizes waiting to be discovered. Whether you are seeking athletic sneakers for your daily workout, sophisticated loafers for the office, or elegant heel sandals for women to elevate your evening ensemble, there is something for everyone. The breadth of selection ensures that you will find the perfect pair to suit your needs, no matter your style or preferences.
Tips for Navigating Online Shoe Shopping:
While the convenience and variety of online shoe shopping are undeniable, navigating this vast landscape can sometimes feel overwhelming. To ensure a smooth and satisfying shopping experience, consider the following tips:
Research: Before making a purchase, research varied brands, styles, and retailers. Reading reviews and customer feedback can yield valuable insights into a specific shoe's quality and fit.
Set a Budget: With so many tempting options available, getting carried away and overspending is easy. Set a budget before shopping to help keep your spending in check.
Prioritize Quality: While going for the cheapest option can be tempting, investing in high-quality footwear is always wise. Well-made shoes are more comfortable, durable, and better for your feet in the long run.
Sizing and Fit:
One of the biggest concerns for online shoe shoppers is ensuring the right fit. Many online retailers provide detailed size guides and measurement charts to mitigate the risk of ordering the wrong size. Moreover, perusing reviews from fellow customers can provide invaluable insights into the fit of a specific shoe and whether it accurately aligns with its advertised size. And remember to familiarize yourself with the retailer's return and exchange policy just in case the shoes do not fit as expected.
Material and Construction:
Another important consideration when shopping for shoes online the material and construction of the footwear. From luxurious leather to lightweight synthetics, the choice of materials can significantly impact the shoes' comfort, durability, and overall quality. While browsing online, carefully review product descriptions and scrutinize the materials used to craft the shoes. Opting for well-made footwear crafted from premium materials guarantees both an aesthetically pleasing appearance and longevity.
Discovering New Brands:
One of the joys of online shoe shopping is the opportunity to find new and emerging brands. While established labels certainly have their appeal, pay attention to smaller, independent designers who may offer unique and innovative styles. Exploring lesser-known brands can lead to exciting discoveries and help you cultivate a genuinely distinctive shoe collection. Backing independent designers and boutique retailers further enriches the fashion scene, fostering a more varied and dynamic style environment.
The Role of Technology:
Technology significantly shapes the online shoe shopping experience in the UAE. From advanced search algorithms that recommend personalized selections based on your browsing history to virtual try-on tools that allow you to see how a shoe will look on your feet before you buy, technology has made online shopping more immersive and interactive than ever before. Embrace these technological innovations to enhance your online shoe shopping experience and make more informed purchasing decisions.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, shoe online shopping in the UAE offers unparalleled convenience, variety, and excitement for footwear enthusiasts. Whether searching for everyday essentials or statement-making styles, the digital marketplace has something for everyone. By heeding these suggestions and embracing innovative technological features, you can adeptly explore the realm of online shoe shopping, ensuring that you discover the ideal pair to enhance your wardrobe and stride out with flair.

Traveling on a Budget: Tips for Planning a Cheap Car Rental Vacation
Dreaming of getting away but don't want to break the bank? With flexible planning and savvy searching, you can book a cheap car rental and enjoy an affordable, memorable vacation. Follow these tips to keep costs low without sacrificing once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Research Destinations in the Off-Season
Visiting destinations during shoulder or off-peak seasons means fewer tourists and lower prices overall. For warm-weather spots, travel in the spring or fall. Ski resorts and cold-weather regions also offer major discounts in their warmer months. You'll enjoy smaller crowds at attractions and discounted hotel rates.
Use Comparison Search Engines
Instead of rental company websites, use comparison search engines like Kayak and Expedia to find the best deals. In seconds, input your destination city and travel dates to browse rates across major and local providers. Then, filter by vehicle type, mileage limits, insurance, and more to pinpoint the cheapest options.
Comparison sites even display any current promo codes or discounts in listings, so you can instantly identify the most cost-effective reservations. You can also set email price alerts for extra savings opportunities right up until departure.
Stick to Compact Cars
Opting for an economy or compact rental car ensures maximum savings unless you require extra seating for a large group. These smaller vehicles deliver great gas mileage plus some of the cheapest rental rates. You'll still enjoy tune-ups and routine maintenance for a reliable ride.
Be open-minded about makes and models, too, for added cost savings. Comparison sites let you filter vehicles by size/class versus specific brands or cars. Avoid upgrades, too, which jack up fees unless safety features are a priority.
Review Insurance Policies
Before automatically paying for insurance from the rental company, check whether your existing auto policy or credit card covers rental vehicles. Most credit cards provide at least basic liability protection for car rentals made on that card, and your personal car insurance may offer secondary coverage.
If you need to purchase rental insurance, only opt for liability rather than unnecessary premium plans to limit expenses. Third-party insurers like Allianz also offer cheaper add-on rental car policies to review.
Sign Up for Loyalty Programs and Coupons
Joining rental car loyalty programs and email lists scores members-only discounts and upgrade perks. Most are free to join and provide instant signup perks. You'll also gain access to periodic promo codes and sales for future bookings.
Use Airport Shuttles
Skip expensive rideshares or taxis by taking advantage of free or low-cost airport shuttle services to access nearby rental branches. Most major airports provide shuttle transport to nearby lots where you can pick up your rental car and start saving.
Research airport maps and ground transportation options to identify shuttle stops near participating rental agencies during your booking process. Some even offer curbside airport delivery but may charge small convenience fees that add to big ground transport savings.
Pack Food and Drink
Given that you'll likely have a rental car with plenty of trunk space, pack food, snacks, and drinks from home to cut dining costs. Grocery shop before your trip and pack a cooler, snacks, reusable water bottle and even a camping stove for easy road trip meals. Carryout also tends to be cheaper than sit-down restaurants in destinations.
Discount Car and Truck Rental
Check out discount rental providers like U-Haul, Penske, Budget, and Enterprise Truck Rental for cheap car and moving truck rentals. Rather than targeting vacation travelers, these companies cater mainly to local and one-way renters looking for cargo vans, pickups, and box trucks.
Pricing tends to run much lower than rental car company rates, even after mileage, insurance fees, and other add-ons. Most offer online booking with instant quotes and low-price guarantees versus competitors. Special discounts and coupons for truck rentals can also help maximize savings on local or long-distance relocations.
Discount Car Rental Near Me
For travelers seeking the very lowest rates on local rental cars, independent agencies often undercut the major chains. Search for "discount car rental near me" and browse small business listings in your destination city or airport area.
Be sure to thoroughly vet rental requirements, insurance options, and business reviews before booking since regulations vary. Reputable local companies can deliver huge savings, though, for last-minute deals or longer-term rentals. Avoid ones pushing sketchy fees or upsells that erode any discount pricing, however.

Note
i'm an autistic person with significant sensory issues who is pretty good at shopping, and I'd like to help others maybe not suffer so much, so here's my system:
1. i wear sunglasses in the supermarket (i wear sunglasses a LOT, in a lot of indoor locations, and honestly the supermarket is the place i'm least likely to get a funny look or a question) ((i don't wear headphones cause it freaks me out that someone could come up behind me, but you could wear headphones if that doesn't apply to you))
2. i try to go at weird times when i can, like it's not always possible with work, but i definitely avoid the busy busy times, so it's not too too noisy (some of the supermarkets also now do like an Accessible Hour where they have the lights dim and the music off; I haven't tried that yet but it sounds good!)
so between the sunglasses and going at quiet times, I can tolerate being in the supermarket a lot longer
3. i break up my shop; i get a couple of daily things in a small shop on my way home from work (like fresh bread), and then i get the stable items in as bulk as possible, as rarely as possible (based on what i can afford and what i can transport and what i can store, like i can't get a YEAR of toilet paper but i can definitely get several dozen rolls at once)
4. i also break up some of my shop to online options where affordable, like there's a local eco shop that i get my soap, toothpaste, laundry detergent, chocolate, etc, and the shipping isn't expensive cause they're local, but it takes a bunch of stuff off my grocery list (plus they use all paper packaging and stuff!)
5. i check for grocery delivery, and sometimes there's a coupon or something, and also sometimes a specific delivery option turns out to be good value, like for a while we were living in an area with a milk service, and it was actually only a little more expensive overall to get the milk dropped at the doorstep, and it was so convenient. I really miss that service now we moved elsewhere!
so now I've eliminated daily perishables (I'll just grab those on the way home quickly), big bulk items (I'll go like once a month to specifically get those), various miscellaneous (delivered from the local eco shop), and maybe milk or something (if there's a delivery service that isn't expensive), so when I'm at the supermarket i basically only need to look for my overall food for the week
6. the online grocery delivery page doesn't know I'm not going to order, so I look on there if I'm not exactly sure what to get, or how much something costs, or if something exists. (if you're organised you can make a REALLY specific list using the online grocery thing, especially if your supermarket does like a "pickup" service, like the options on the online system are exactly what's in the shop, and if someone orders online, a grocery worker just prints out the order and walks around the shop and puts all the things in a bag for the person to pick up. you can do that too! make your list, print it out yourself, and just go around to pick up exactly those things!)
7. I have little systems for how to make decisions, like, okay for fruit if I'm stuck between options, always pick the one that'll last longest, for flour just always pick the cheapest by weight, for a spice I'm not going to use much of just pick the smallest container, and you can put those deciders on your list, like "spaghetti, min 500g, cheapest option", so then when you're in the shop, you're just searching for the cheapest 500g of spaghetti, not trying to decide between a dozen kinds and prices and weights and offers of spaghetti
so when I'm at the supermarket, I have a list that's as specific as possible, with notes on how to make decisions (for me the notes are mental notes cause that works for me, but you can totally write them down if it helps, especially at first)
the supermarket is a very difficult location, but I actually really like supermarkets now! when the pressure is off, the supermarket is like a cultural experience centre, full of interesting products to look at and maybe even buy and eat. sensory overload and decision paralysis are so awful, and so debilitating, and it's ridiculous that supermarkets aren't more accessible. but I hope seeing my system might be useful for other autistic people!
/venting /gen
neurodivergent culture is trying your hardest to plan a list to get to the store but being overwhelmed by all the options, and prices, and lights, and shadows, and noises, and people, that it takes six hours or so, and tears, but still not getting everything you needed anyways.
stores are designed to be disorientating and overwhelming for neurotypicals so they spend more. so yeah, of course we would come out of there exhausted.
seriously. i dont understand how people joke about how growing up is learning to enjoy going to the grocery store. at least with a 'junkdrawer-store' it's not necessities, just nicknacks you likely wont buy anyways and thus you can walk away at any time.
you need groceries to live. you need to suffer through till it's done
please dont tell me to get it dropped off that is expensive financially.

Five things to keep in mind when buying a car:
Before you have your heart set on a car you should research the common issues that occur with the make, model, and year of the car you’re interested in buying. I would do research online but also by going into auto-mechanic shops and asking mechanics. Another good place to go to and ask is an auto parts shop.
Look into the car insurance. You are not just paying for a car - you are going to pay for car insurance. Before purchasing a vehicle you should research the average insurance cost of the make, model, and year of that car. (If you have the VIN number of the vehicle you’re interested in you will have a more accurate idea of what you will be paying.) If you are ordering a car online you may need to show proof of insurance when they’re delivering the car. If you’re aware of this earlier rather than later you have more time to find the best deal for car insurance instead of running around like a headless chicken and just going with any car insurance. And last but not least some auto insurance companies offer a discount if you have a plan with them a certain amount of days before you need the insurance.
A general rule of buying a used car is don’t pick a car that has a hundred thousand in mileage or near that mileage. A smart way to get an idea of how long your car is going to last before you reach that mileage is to find out how many miles a single trip to your job or college is, multiply it by two, and then think on how many days you will be driving to school or work. If your job is sixteen miles away then driving there and back home would be thirty-two miles a day. If you work five days a week that is a hundred and sixty miles per week just to commute to your job - that is not including going grocery shopping regularly, driving to meet friends, or anything else. Now let’s say there's thirty-two weeks left in the year you buy your car. That is five thousand one hundred and twenty miles you will be driving that year just from work alone. Use this example to find how many years it will take your car to reach that hundred thousand mileage.
Your credit score affects your loan but can also affect your car insurance. If you know you will be car shopping in the future you should try and raise your credit score. Your credit score is affected by payment history, the length of your credit history, how much you owe, the types of credit accounts you have open, and last but not least credit inquiries. Understanding how credit score works and how to improve it can save you money.
If this is your first car you should research the auto mechanic shops near you. Go ahead and figure out which auto mechanic has good reviews - please keep in mind the cheapest option may save you money upfront but could bite you in the ass if the mechanic isn’t good - so you’re not abruptly scrambling to pick an option when you abruptly need it. Even if a sudden emergency doesn’t occur you still need to look into a good place to get your oil changed. I mention oil change because that will be the most common work you will need done to your car.

Baby formula soaring costs: 'I struggle, but I won’t buy a cheaper brand'
Emma Davies
By Sam Gruet and Ashleigh Swan
Business reporters, BBC News
Single mum Emma Davies is struggling with the cost of baby formula for her 13-week-old daughter Nancy.
But despite the expense, the 42-year-old says she won’t buy cheaper alternatives.
“You just want the best for your children, you don’t want to give them a cheaper brand,” she says. Many new parents feel the same.
Amy, 25, says she and her husband have skipped meals to ensure their children are fed, clothed and warm. The mum of two spends about £72 a month on formula milk.
According to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), formula prices have risen by 25% over the past two years, generating high profit margins.
The watchdog highlighted that parents could save £500 in the first year of a baby’s life by shopping around for alternative brands.
Although there are many available, the market is still dominated by two big players.
Danone, which owns the Aptamil and Cow & Gate brands, and Nestle, which owns SMA and Little Steps, have an 85% market share.
Shoppers hit by escalating prices of branded goods
Emma feels like breastfeeding is not an option for her, after she contracted mastitis while breastfeeding her first child.
When it comes to her weekly grocery shop, she says she will buy the cheapest possible own-brand products available and will often look for deals and damaged products that are discounted.
“I’ve always been a single parent, so you budget,” she says.
But for baby formula, she won’t change from a more expensive brand.
“It’s a risk. I’d rather stick to what I’ve been told, obviously, by my parents, and what I’ve used with my older children. It’s what’s been reliable.”
Some parents worry that cheaper brands are less nutritional than the more expensive ones. But Amy Brown, a professor in maternal and infant health at Swansea University, says that is not the case.
“All infant formulas are tightly regulated to make sure they include the same carb, fat and protein levels and there is no evidence to say that one formula milk is better than the other.”
She believes that parents may be reluctant to buy cheaper brands due to the idea that if a brand is more expensive, it must be better quality.
“Parents want the best for their baby and so they will get the more expensive product. However, parents need to understand that the price does not reflect the quality,” she says.

Part of the issue might be down to the law as well.
In the UK, it is illegal to advertise infant formula – for babies up to six months – because it might discourage breastfeeding.
Additionally, retailers cannot communicate special offers via any platform for infant formula, although they can with follow-on formula – for babies older than six months.

Many, including supermarket chain Iceland, want those rules to change.
The frozen food chain’s boss Richard Walker has called them “archaic and outdated” and said it prevents Iceland from being able to accept loyalty cards, cash equivalents and High Street vouchers.
“You can’t even donate to food banks with infant stage formula,” he said.
Another factor may be that, although the CMA says savings can be made by shopping around, when it comes to baby formula, there aren’t that many own-brand products available, which are typically much cheaper than branded products.
Currently, Aldi is the only supermarket that offers formula through its own brand Mamia. Campaigners have called for more retailers to do so to help ease the financial pressures on parents.
Whatever the reason, experts agree that this is a huge issue.
Sophie Livingstone, the chief executive of charity Little Village HQ, says she hears about “terrible choices” parents and carers are having to make every day.
“Watering down formula to make it stretch further, nappy rationing and kids wearing shoes that are too small for them,” she says.
The charity supports families with children under the age of five living in poverty across London.
Ms Livingstone says increases in bills, rents, food and the price of formula has created a perfect storm.
“The huge increase in demand for our help is a clear indicator of the increased pressure families are under. By August of this year, we’d helped 50% more families than the same time last year,” she adds.
The CMA has said it is launching an investigation into the baby formula market, with an update expected around mid-2024.
