Louis Jadot Moulin A Vent Clos de Rochegres, Chateau des Jacques 2018
Louis Jadot Moulin A Vent Clos de Rochegrés is a single, 8 hectare, vineyard and is part of Jadot’s Chateau des Jacques Beaujolais estate.
Louis Jadot is one of the largest and most famous wine producers and negociants in the Burgundy wine-growing region. The origins of the company date back to 1859 when the business was founded by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. Over time the company has acquired plots of vines is some of the most prestigious vineyards in the region including Beaune Clos des Ursules, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Savigny Les Beaune and many more. As well as Burgundy, they also own vineyards in Beaujolais at Chateau des Jacques and at Domaine Ferret in Pouilly Fuisse.
Maison Louis Jadot bought Château des Jacques in 1996. It is situated in Moulin à Vent, between Fleurie and Chenas, and has a 27 ha vineyards of ‘Moulin à Vent’. The 5 ‘Clos’ cover an average of 19.5 hectares. Moulin à Vent is often referred to as the “King of Beaujolais”, and is considered to be the most Burgundian Cru of Beaujolais. The geological origin and soil composition are quite different from the Côte d’Or, which is why Beaujolais red wines are made only from Gamay grapes. The soil is quite light, made up of sand and a little bit of clay, lying on a bedrock high in manganese, that gives the wine its deep colour.
Louis Jadot Moulin à Vent “Clos de Rochegrès” is a special “cuvée” from old vines. The wine is vinified in closed vats with pumping over, and then aged in oak barrels for 12 months. One part of the grapes is de-stemmed. Clos de Rochegrès is an 9ha vineyard, renowned for producing wines of great weight and character, that are capable of ageing and maturing over 10 years. The wine is made in the traditional Burgundian way and is aged in new oak casks prior to bottling.

2013 Chateau Des Rontets Pouilly-Fuisse
Tumblr media
Ok, since it’s been awhile and this bottle has a pretty long name, let’s break down what’s going on here.
Many Americans are familiar with US and other new world wines being labeled based primarily on the producer (e.g. Robert Mondavi) and the grape varietal (e.g. Cabernet Sauvignon). There often is information about the region (e.g. Napa Valley) and in some cases even a specific vineyard (e.g. To Kalon). Occasionally additional information is on the label such as a positioning description for the wine (e.g. “reserve”) or a creative name for the specific bottling. Oh, and let’s not forget the vintage (e.g. 2001).
Ok, that’s upwards of 7 variables to track, though most labels usually have no more than 5. While this seems like a lot, if you look around you’ll find many other consumer products with a similar depth of variables. For example, consider a mobile phone purchase. It has a producer (e.g. “Apple"), a specific model (e.g. “iPhone 7 Plus”), a color (e.g. black), a carrier (e.g. AT&T), and memory capacity (e.g. 128 GB).
Ok, no problem, right? You got this. So now let’s head to France and check out this Pouilly-Fuisse.
French labels include most of the same information an American label has. In this case the producer is Chateau Des Rontets, the region is Pouilly-Fuisse, the vineyard or this unique bottling would appear to be Les Birbettes (ok, I’m not entirely sure here!), and the vintage is 2013. Cool. But wait…where’s the grape varietal? For example, how do you know whether this is Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay?
This is the key difference in the labels. French wines, like most old world wines, do not often list the grape varietal. This is because wines made in a particular geographical area (in France called an Appellation d’origine controlee) usually can only be made with specific varietals. For this particular bottle, it’s from Pouilly-Fuisse in Burgundy and so must be Chardonnay because the producer wouldn’t be allowed to use the appellation name with another grape varietal.
So does this mean you need to memorize which grapes are associated with a bunch of regions? Unfortunately, this is more or less what you need to do, though there is general consistency within a broader region. For example, virtually all white wines from Burgundy are Chardonnay and all red wines are Pinot Noir.
Honestly, I think the new world approach makes more sense. While you might familiarize yourself with French appellations, what about Italy? What about Spain? It can be a lot to remember.
Ok, phew, now on to the wine.
First, the smell. I didn’t get much from this, though I have a slight cold so am not really qualified to make a judgement. (Why am I writing this? Well, I have a schedule to keep!) I did get a whiff of smoke.  Now, in some extreme cases this can be considered a fault, but in this bottle it was a more nuanced and pleasing scent.
The first taste sensation that hit me was the acidity. As is common with white Burgundy, it has a more lively bite than a typical American Chardonnay. Refreshing!
I did say I had a slight cold, so I won’t comment further :O
Overall, this appears to be a well made, food friendly Chardonnay. Not something I’d jump to serve guests as an easy sipping cocktail wine, but defintely a nice pairing with foods, even fatty foods that you might otherwise pair with a Sauvignon Blanc. (One easy tip to remember is to consider serving a wine high in acidity with food that commonly benefits from a fresh squeeze of lemon on top - in both cases the acidity helps cut through the fat or complements the sweetness).

Wine Reviews: Weekly Mini Round-Up For July 9, 2018
I taste a bunch-o-wine (technical term for more than most people). So each week, I share some of my wine reviews (mostly from samples) and tasting notes in a “mini-review” format.
They are meant to be quirky, fun, and (mostly) easily-digestible reviews of (mostly) currently available wines (click here for the skinny on how to read them), and are presented links to help you find them, so that you can try them out for yourself. Cheers!
2015 Zocker Paragon Vineyard Gruner Veltliner (Edna Valley): It’s perennially a fascinatingly good time to watch what this one is up to. $19 B+
2011 Oso Libre “Quixotic” (Paso Robles): There’s nothing unrealistic about how enjoyable – and abundant – the tangy red fruit flavors still are. $62 A-
2016 Dutton Estate La Familia Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley): Sure, it might be young, but with all of that brooding darkness, it’s also deadly freakin’ serious. $70 A-
2015 Grgich Hills Estate Paris Tasting Commemorative Chardonnay (Napa Valley): For those times when refinement, texture, and contemplation are meant to trump bombast, weight, and raw concentration. $95 A
2015 Georges Duboeuf Pouilly-Fuisse (Maconnais): The white figs have come to party, and they will not be denied, my friends! $32 B+
2017 Chateau Ferry Lacombe “Haedus” Rose (Cotes de Provence): Red flowers, red berries, and very likely a red face and nose from drinking so much of it. $18 B+
2013 Cartuxa Evora Colheita Tinto (Alentejo): Dark, floral, and like a dreamscape, it’s at once exotic but also eerily familiar. $21 B+
2013 Gaja Dagromis (Barolo): Yet an energetic pup at this stage, with all signs pointing to it growing into a fine example worthy of its prestigious pedigree. $90 A-
2017 Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough): So, you think that you know pungent? Well, this is here to tell you that you don’t really know pungent yet, bro. $28 B+
2015 Hickinbotham The Revivalist Merlot (McLaren Vale): What this will revive is a) your faith in high-end Aussie wares, and b) your love of Merlot done right. $75 A-

Day 32 - Continuing the journey of Jadot
Early in the morning, we set out to drive to Chateau des Jacques in Beaujolais to meet with Cyril, the manager of the estate. The estate was currently under construction, as they were revamping the buildings and land. They had moved all the tanks to a separate building, and most of the fermentations were finished.
Tumblr media
He took us down to the cellar where he led us through a tasting of 10 wines. The wines included: 2016 Beaujolais Blanc Grand Clos Loyse, 2014 Moulin a Vent, 2014 La Roche, 2014 Morgon, 2000 Moulin a Vent, and 2014 Fleurie, which was my personal favorite and which I bought a bottle of later.
Tumblr media
We had a quick lunch with Cyril at Les Plantanes de Chenas, and quickly drove over to Domaine Ferret in Pouilly-Fuisse. where we met with Audrey, the manager of the estate. She gave us a quick tour of the vineyards in the vicinity and the winery, finishing with a tasting of their wines. The tasting included 2015 Autour de la Roche, 2015 Les Menetrieres, 2015 Les Perrieres, and 2015 Clos des Prouges. Audrey was a great guide through the wines because she also had a map of the area and talked through the terroir and history of the vineyards with great detail.
Tumblr media
Our last stop was at the Jadot winery in Givry, Cellier des Pierres Rouges. Now, we had two cars, and the car I was in entered the wrong address into the GPS so we drove for about an hour in the wrong direction. The other car arrived and did a quick tour while they waited for us. After getting the real address and driving for another hour, we arrived and apologized profusely for getting lost.
Remi, the manager, was extremely gracious and understanding and did the tour a second time for us! We were very thankful he took extra time out of his evening to show us around. The winery is fairly new for Jadot, and he himself is new to the industry! He has a huge responsibility with the winery but is looking hopefully into the future.
