He wakes up panicked and disoriented, and digs his claws into the warm body next to him entirely on instinct. As his brain catches up with reality, though, it's a whole new kind of terror that comes rushing in. He hurt you. There's blood. Clawing you up like some kind of feral animal (while you allowed him in your bed) is far from the image of cuteness and desirability that Like2 so desperately aims for— and worse, he's certain you're going to punish him for it.

Herme

Even when he's back to full consciousness and looking right at the shallow, bloody lines scored into your shoulder, Herme can hardly believe he was the one to cause them. Such a lapse in control is unheard of for him— and over a mere nightmare, no less. He'll apologize immediately and make sure the wounds are tended to, while fully expecting severe punishment for the damage he caused. Still, it's hard to process that he'd make such a mistake at all.

Gras

Though he's far from surprised that he'd end up clawing someone while frantic and hardly conscious, having it happen while he was in bed with you is a stroke of truly awful luck. How typical, Gras thinks, that he'd fuck up and hurt you when all you'd done was offer him a place in your bed. The spiral of self-loathing thoughts only makes him more emotional and unstable; and that plus the fear of incoming anger and rejection likely leads him to lash out.

Chassepot

Waking up to your yelp of pain and the sight of blood sends Chassepot into a far worse panic than the nightmare alone. He's horrified that he hurt you, and the mix of terror and choking shame has him stumbling through frantic, clumsy attempts to clean up the wounds and apologize. Hurting his Master is the kind of behavior that his awful brother is known for— he's better than that! This lingering shame will haunt him for a long, long time.

It takes a few seconds for the nightmare-induced panic to fade once he's awake... and a moment or two past that for him to think to remove the claws embedded in your arm. Once reality catches up with him, he's somewhere between horrified with himself and instinctively anticipating whatever punishment you'll decide he deserves. In the moment, he covers up his terror and does what's needed to care for the wounds, shoving his fear far out of sight.

So this is nationverse and unfortunately the ambassador is not Alfred. It is John Lothrop Motley, the historical ambassador to Austria at that time and a figure that I happen to be very interested in. He just so happened to be best friends with Otto von Bismarck, the Minister-President (and de facto leader) of Prussia, who started the Austro-Prussian war. The fic explores Motley's interactions with Roderich and the eventual fallout of Motley's secret being revealed.

-Motley gets lost and stumbles into Roderichs piano room - They have a conversation, Roderich really enjoys Motley's presence since he actually treats him like a human instead of a personification (Motley has no clue who he really is)

-heartbroken after the loss, Roderich goes to Motley's room to seek comfort but doesn't find him. But there is a letter on his desk signed with the name of the man who killed 25,000 of his own men

Paris-Commune-Related Work for Commune Week 2023

Léon Choubrac, Le Dernier Jour de la Commune (1883).

Seeing that my post from last year (thank you, @paperandsong) has gained a little attention, I am compiling the works I have written to commemorate the Paris Commune in this post. These are not explicitly POTO-related, but no knowledge of the fandom I'm writing in is required to read them. The franchise (Senjyuushi) personifies various firearms, and I write about historical firearms related to the Franco-German War and the Commune during the Commune. The franchise does not deal with this context, and all the firearms I write about are original characters. If you're interested in the historical context of the Commune, or learning various facts about it, you can read my Madder Skies series:

Une fête cerise - The Commune as witnessed by a Tabatière rifle. (He is affectionately named Ignace for his fiery nature.) Themes: women of the Commune, disillusion, hope. A lot of unsaid affection.

Allons enfants de la patrie - The Commune from the eyes of a Chassepot rifle named Florence, owned by a child Communard. Themes: children, war horrors, innocence, bathos, propaganda. Erik makes a cameo! The second chapter contains historical notes on the Commune.

Beyond Madder Skies - The centrepiece of the series. A Chassepot rifle from the Versailles army finds himself stranded behind German forces that are observing the repression of the Commune. He acquaints himself with a Dreyse needle rifle (from Prussia), and they re-negotiate their relationship as enemies as the Chassepot fights to return to his comrades. Each chapter covers a day in the final week of the Commune.

I would love to put out new work related to the Commune, POTO, or Madder Skies this year, hopefully before Commune Week ends. Stay tuned...

The valentine's day lines inspired me. How would Chassepot, Gras, Enfield and Marks deal with a Master who has an obvious favourite and it's some other gun? Master still likes them, just... Not as much

Chassepot — He's absolutely miserable, and doing everything possible to keep you from realizing that. Chassepot knows that jealousy is unbecoming of a noble weapon like him, but that doesn't help how it eats him alive inside every time he sees your favor going to someone else. Sooner or later, he's bound to lash out.

Gras — Keeps up the "perfect gentleman" act in front of you while not-so-subtly seething whenever your back is turned. Gras is plenty used to being the unfavorite, so it's an equal mixture of vicious envy and a sort of bitter, resentment-filled acceptance formed from never really expecting to be your most precious tool, in the first place.

Enfield — No matter what, he won't let you see any unsightly displays of envy... even if he's internally debating every possible method of replacing your current favorite. Enfield can live without your undivided attention, of course, but his attempts at proving his usefulness get a little more desperate when he feels threatened like this.

Marks — The most obvious about his displeasure, by far. Marks isn't ashamed to admit that he wants to be your one-and-only partner at the best of times— having another gun as direct competition means either constant attempts to "prove his worth" or lashing out at the other gun on pure emotional impulse. He's a whiny mess about it!

Hallo again!! I’m the Falin-anon turned 🍀anon and yeah, honestly I thought the Sanrio collab was at least coming in December cause of the presumed Halloween event like the last two years did. But nope, popped up and luckily my wallet was saved because I got the Lucas card I wanted (;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`) I shall forgive him for the full year that his cards have been avoiding me. I do hope the event story stays cause I’ve honestly been too busy collecting up those butterfly gems for June Bride and leveling up Bellen to lvl 16 to unlock all his memories. If not then…oof.

Yeahh…honestly I’ve been stacking up tissues in preparation for the potential angst fest they’re gonna give us knowing their record of happy to bad things happening to the butlers. Darn you Studio Wasabi! Let the butlers be happy I say! (I’m a liar, I like angst too much to truly be mad at them). Personally though, I think the twist may be the reveal of the fourth angel or something like that? Or perhaps a deeper understanding of why the ring exists and how it even came to Aruji? Since we still don’t really know how the ring came to be, if there were any other masters before Aruji, or the black cat that appears every so often.

Butler wise, yeah I think they’re gonna wait at least another year to introduce the last two butlers since we haven’t really gotten to know Bellen or Shiro that well yet. To establish their fans and all and to get to know their personalities and motivations better. I mean, compared to the other butlers (including the first floor villa ones) we don’t really know them all that well aside from what others have told us (in the case of Bellen) and the little snippets they’ve given to us (Shiro). Still a big fan of Bellen but I am trying to hold onto my loyalty to Lucas.

On a different topic, Senjyushi!! I honestly did not think I’d find another active Senjyushi fan after all this time ever since it ended service (╥_╥) my prayers have finally been answered. My favorite (not saying that I don’t like all the musketeers it’s just…some hit different in a good way) are Marks and Fal tied for first place. Kinda..opposite in terms of personality and how they interact with the Master but ahhh! I couldn’t decide! Who’s yours 👀?

Story wise I got to Japan before it shut down 😭 I’ve been living off of YouTube to remember those days since I can no longer go back and reread the stories. And yeah, the original game ended pretty spontaneously (within one year) and has a really rushed ending.

SPOILERS (SKIP IF YOU WANNA READ THE OG STORY)

Basically the Resistance is able to push through and defeat all the modern musketeers and, with Like❤︎︎Two’s help, was able to reach the World Emperor. Before they can finish him off, Ashley (World Emperor) essentially crumbles down and is shown to have what the Senjyushi mc has whenever their modern musketeers overuse Absolute Ruthelessness and is dying. The og mc feels bad and decides to save Ashley and heal his wounds. However, Mauser disappears because of this and Ashely, who’s been defeated, tries to end himself but Mauser (in gun form) refuses to do it. This, presumably, changes his mind on how he should bring peace to the world + the og masters mercy and is what leads to his actions in Senjyushi.

Since the og master healed Ashley’s wound completely, their wounds starts fading too (this is hinted by a few scenes before as the musketeers had gathered beforehand to discuss what’s going to happen after the final battle) and the musketeers say their goodbyes and return to gun form. We don’t really know what happens to the og master after this but there is a short scene at the end of the og game where I think an old guy (or perhaps the master themselves) is cleaning a gun in a cabin in the woods surrounded by guns. The translation is pretty bad but that’s what I could get out of it. According to this and what’s hinted in game, the og master may have the og Brown Bess (?) and Chassepot (?) wherever they’re hiding.

Yeah I don’t think we’ll get a new game out of the Senjyushi universe after this one either ;-;. It’s such a compelling story and the mc is written decently well from what I’ve seen even if they’re supposed to be an insert self. So much trauma in the poor mc…wait I just realized when the switch version comes out we’ll probably have to witness Vivian’s death again. . . NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

HOPEFULLY, it does do well and the story can continue on (also delusional) as the stakes are pretty well thought out. Actions have consequences and the development of the characters are great. The gameplay should be improved in the new version though as in the og game it was…kinda lackluster despite the pretty graphics whenever Absolute Nobility/Ruthelessness was used.

and the ‘twist’ could be both, the probabilities are high!—maybe something related to Aruji, the fourth angel or even the room in the basement of the Prison of Chaos (Sardis’s prison from Lato’s arc.). because the room was so creepy and we ended up getting no information about it either.

now that I think about it, the whole matter of the ‘traitor to humanity’ is still pending as well; maybe a hint could be dropped towards who it is? lol.

yep, we still don’t know much about Shiro, like at all. so I think we need a lot of information about him revealed—with Bellen he himself doesn’t remember much about himself or anything really. I read 2 of his 3 initial card stories and in them, you can see how he’s trying to adjust to everything—the world, the fact he’s not as strong or experienced as the other butlers, his memories (which were supposed to be important in figuring out a lot of questions) are fuzzy. he’s going to take quite a while to adjust, figure himself out so we do need time before the next butlers ✨!

coming to senjyushi (*≧∀≦*) Mark and Fal 😭? they’re too different my friend, in a lot of ways.

(in case of their interaction with MC and it’s sharp contrast, Mark got a leash and collar for MC to use on him, so they could be together 24/7. then there’s Mr World Army soldier who, (in his affection story?) told MC that if it had been up to chance, it could have had been him who would have executed MC’s parents 😭)

(though, I never ending up finding out about Fal’s past or why he his the way he is 🤨 /j)

ahem, well who am I to judge? the reason why I even became obsessed with Snider (like the push for me) was that he told MC that he wanted to put a collar on MC to show everyone that they belonged to him (in the older game, affection story) so uhh yeah 🫢 you like ‘em crazy, I like ‘em crazy; just in different ways.

I also loved Mark 😔 our adorable meow meow. oh! and I loved Like-two too! he was the first tsundere character I had liked in a while! I loved all the characters but my favourite were definitely Kathariste, UK and France’s factions 💗

and man, that’s a whole lot of stuff that happened in the original game 😭 I haven’t read the complete main story (so my feelings may change afterwards) but I don’t think the ending of MC healing Ashley’s wound was a good decision. like after all they did, letting them go scotch-free doesn’t seem appropriate.

I’m so looking forward to the game on switch (even though I don’t have switch 😭) but I am not looking forward to our girl-boss vivian dying again. I grew really attached to her in the main story and then boom! she’s dead? 💀 MC and Vivian were soul mates!

and yep, they need to work on the game-play mechanics. while it was easy to play (just had to leave it on auto), the game play wasn’t entertaining or engaging. (the delusional part of me would love to have that battle mechanics similar to PGR or HSR; they aren’t open-world but the battle system is pretty engaging. it could work out well because we fight outragers or the World Imperial Army soldiers.) i hope it works out well enough; i love the story too much to let go of it 😭

Sentier des Turcos

One of the more stirring examples of courage in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 took place outside Woerth, on a hilltop now known as the Path of the Turcos.

The Turcos were Algerian colonial troops, black, Arab, Muslim. The 2nd Algerian Regiment had arrived near a rallying point outside the small town of Woerth. They were a curious attraction to the locals, dark-skinned, strangely attired with baggy pants. Their notation as Turco referred to their former occupier, the Ottoman’s, who controlled Algeria before the French wrested away the region from the decaying empire of the Turks.

After the defeat of an exposed French detachment at Wissembourg, the French survivors retreated and were joined by other forces around Woerth. This position had been noted as a potential defensive line in pre-war studies; now it would need to serve just that very purpose.

The French were severely outnumbered, and their exposed and ineffective deployment risked defeat in detail. The Prussians and Bavarian’s pressed forward after their initial victory looking for their enemy. On the morning of August 6, 1870, battle was joined as Prussian troops made contact

The Turcos anchored the French left flank. Over the afternoon the German and Bavarian troops swarmed up the hillsides. They suffered significant casualties but found flanks and rears of French positions by keeping moving and taking advantage of their numbers and low-level leaders to press their attacks. The French Chassepot rifle was lethal - it was far superior to the German “Needle gun” - but Prussian artillery arrived as the afternoon wore on and further tipped the balance decisively in the Prussian favor. The French commander, McMahon, threw his heavy cavalry into a charge to help extract his main force. While they were able to assist the extraction, they paid an awful cost, ambushed in the village of Morsbronn Les Bains on the right flank.

The Turcos, holding the opposite, left flank, were in severe trouble. Like the tide, Prussian forces assaulted them mercilessly. The Turcos lost 80% of their force and 90% of their officers. They fought bravely, heroically and Prussian forces, frustrated by their losses, the Turco’s stubborn defense and confronted by their racially alien demeanor, showed no mercy. Turco prisoners were simply not taken.

After McMahon called for a general retreat, the paltry few Turcos survivors left the field with their flag intact and staggered back the 50km to Strasbourg, which Prussian-Bavarian forces had bypassed. The cities defenses, much like Metz and Sedan were to experience in the next weeks, were a trap. The story of the Turco’s bravery, their savage casualties and their heroic defense of their adopted flag, was writ large in the tales of the battle.

The Sentier de Turcos is a winding trail around the French left flanks position, where the Turco’s had camped the night before the battle, and where they stood and died that afternoon. One can see the fields of the left flank and, in the distance the spire of the church at Froeschwiller, the French HQ, and which confusingly became a second name of the same battle, can be seen.

It is a poignant, and unfortunately little-known aspect of an equally vaguely-known conflict that fired 75 years of Franco-German fratricide.

History Is Not a Straight Line -- This Week in Hunting Darkness

Hello Hunters, Darkhearts, and Beasts!

I've been doing quite a bit of research this week. Some for the worldbuilding for Season 2 of From the Bay of Fangs, but most to give myself a timeline on the development of the Hunters' gear through the years. I like using historic weapons and I like those weapons to be used in roughly accurate order.

But what I've noticed this week is that 19th century gunsmithing was really quite messy. The smoothbore Brown Bess musket was used until 1867, well after rifling became common. The Chassepot initially used paper cartridges in 1866, even though metal cartridges had been around for years. Revolvers produced in 1836 were used alongside revolvers produced in 1861. Sometimes guns were designed and produced in the same year, sometimes there were years -- even a decade -- between the two steps.

It got me thinking how we -- or at least, to my knowledge, most people -- tend to see history as a straight line. I think in recent years we've gotten to the point where we no longer speak of linear progress because, well, some things are getting worse, or just bad in different ways. But I also think we still speak in terms of linear development and although I think that's more accurate I still don't think it's fully accurate.

History is a mess. Historians like to point out anachronisms in people's perceptions of history, but history is often anachronistic. The world is large and humanity is diverse. Ideas don't naturally go from one step to the next, like some deterministic walk along a single logical path. Ideas clash and jostle and mingle and merge and fall in and out of favour in different places and communities.

The modern world -- shaped so heavily by globalisation and colonialism -- sometimes seems to be turning homogenous. Many people think the patriarchy is and has been a global given. Same with heteronormativity. Old and problematic stati quo that have to be overcome by new thinking. And maybe in some ways that's true, but people also seem to keep rediscovering ways in which the precolonial, pre-Christian-Missionary'd world was often not quite as patriarchal and not nearly as heteronormative as we now take for granted.

That's fascinating to me. I'm thinking of reading some more books delving into that subject matter, maybe use it for Hunting Darkness beyond what I've already done to question patriarchy and heteronormativity in my worldbuilding.

But first, I'm going to see Jesus Christ Superstar.
