I'm so curious about how being from 200 years in the future affects Silver's attitude about relationships (both platonic and romantic). Like there's absolutely no way it doesn't, considering Silver's yeeted between time periods whenever a crisis happens (this is implied as early as Sonic Rivals 2 btw, as it's kinda implied in Silver and Espio's story that a portal just. shows up to take him back to the future). He's constantly yeeted between a time period where all his friends are (usually) happy and healthy and a time period where all his friends are dead.

That feels like it'd fundamentally fuck up somoene's views on relationships, making them either inclined to avoid connection (much like Shadow's attitude), crave connection to avoid loneliness (which does seem to be Silver's current attitude, and is something he directly mentions in issue 8 of the IDW comics), or both. It makes me wonder where Silver's at on that spectrum, and if he has attachment issues. These are people who have been dead for probably at least a century in his time period.

This is actually something I think is a minor flaw of the Sonic franchise. While there are exceptions (notable ones being Espio post-Zombot arc and Shadow) we don't really see how events have affected these characters. We don't get to really see how Forces affected anyone. We don't get to see how Generations affected anyone (and we know it did affect Tails, Charmy, and Cream at the very least, because Tails says he's going to have nightmares for weeks after you save him, Cream says "It was scary in the dark, but I tried to be brave" when you save her as Modern Sonic, and Charmy describes it as "very scary" if you save him as Classic Sonic and tells Modern Sonic "I was scared because somebody took me"). We don't really see how anything affects Sonic (which is a missed opportunity, because he probably has PTSD at this point and I think that's something that'd be wonderful to show. Unfortunately I don't see Sega showing Sonic with PTSD any time soon due to their dumb mandates). There's absolutely no way Silver isn't incredibly traumatized from all the time travel shenanigans he gets into (not inherently because of the time travel shenanigans, but because he's constantly trying to fix his future and doesn't have purpose without that. Additionally he's from a time period where all of his friends have been dead for decades, which cannot be good for one's psyche).

My point is none of these characters should be as okay as Sega likes to portray (with the exception of Shadow I guess) and the best we get regarding Silver specifically is his premonition thing in Team Sonic Racing and his existential crisis in Future Growth.

Spooky Season Shenanigans for the Nekos Part 1

America-Cat 

He begins to gather clumps from his litter box and soil that is damp from the backyard. America cat has taken some of his owners socks which he uses as casings to store his ‘ammunition’. This crazy cat is even in the midst of crafting an underground lair of sorts. He’s stored a few long lighters, fireworks, toilet paper rolls, eggs he’s brought to ‘ferment’, masks, costumes, etc. America cat is going to be putting on an entire production. If he already wasn’t the King of Halloween this will make him the king now for like ever meow! 

Canada-Cat 

Has gone to cat markets, candle shops, and bakeries where cat’s all over the world come to visit when Sept 1st hits. There is one shop in particular that sells this legendary Maple Fish Cake, which only available during this time of year. They’re so popular in fact that they have to limit cats with only being able to purchase 5 of these specialty cakes for the season. [Yes, there were many years where scammer cats hoarded the entire stock of cakes in the morning. They’d mark up the price of them 300% to say that ridiculous is an understatement but the cakes are that yummy. And they may or may not have a special cat-nip lacd in them] 

Canada-cat tentatively passes by the costume shops debating with himself on if he’s going to attend his brothers cat’s annual Halloween party and prank-a-thon. 

China-Cat

Busy raiding his owners' pastry / cookbooks to make an entire special Fall menu of food for the season. He will do more to spend time in the sun while it still lasts. China-cat wants his dark chestnut fur to get nice and toasty so he can store it away for the Winter months. [So his old bones don’t get frozen and brittle.] China-cats favorite pass time is to go to Yi Dian Dian & The Alley once or twice a day to get a hot or cold milk tea that occasionally has Boba in it. 

England-Cat 

His tail will be flicking back and forth lowly on the carpet. The season where he got to be on the fresh grass or out on the open sea. When he daydreamed about the wide open waters he thought about the days that he was a mouser alongside his swashbuckling and commanding owner. As England cat was in the midst of his thoughts clouds made the sky darker and the air became colder. When his head rises he was able to catch the last milliseconds of a lightning boldt. He hears low chattering rising from the basement. 

‘Arthur must be at it again so he can try to win Halloween this year against that Yank. I guess now is a good time for me to maybe get ready for America cats shenanigans this year as well.’

France-Cat

He’d invited ‘Charmy Chartreux,’ a famous cat known for doing home holiday decorating, planning, and execution. By the time Spet rolls around, France cat will be ready for the season of the spooky but make it posh & elegant. Tangerine tea lights, pumpkins with the flur de lese, macaroons, & the Eiffel Tower carved into them. He even managed to make a deal with Canada-Cat to have a shipment of Maple Fish Cakes sent to him. 

Germany-Cat 

Planning safety guides for cats and what to do when you’ve had too much cat-nip contingent plans. He knows America-cat is planning an insane rager complete with ill-advised pranks, stunts, and performances all meant to stroke his ego. Germany-cat also makes note to buy extra sausages, treats, and Apfelsaft (Apple Juice—just make it sparkling). He does this so no cat is on an empty stomach and has its whiskers twisted by catnip. 

Italy Cats 

They haven’t thought about Halloween all that much. They’re just vibing with the season changes. The crisper air carried the fresh scent of harvested grapes, olives, pumpkins, etc. The two of them love stealing Felicianos tortelli di zucca (pumpkin soup), minestrone, and strudel di mele. 

“Germany! Germany! Help me! The kitties have run a-way with my delicious food again!” 

Japan-Cat 

Yet, another cat who loves to watch the season transition into the next. He adores watching the thousands of leaves float down to the ground. The mesmerizing colors of the fall leaves are cornsilk, fawn, midnight greens, and burnt oranges. All these colors melded together to create a beautiful scene that is ephemeral and sort of angelic in a way. Japan-cat has a special stash of tuna that he likes to eat when he finds a magnificent view. 

While he eats he’s working out how he’ll survive another America-cat rager. 

Russia-Cat 

Happily roaming the streets receiving belly rubs, scratchies, and treats from the last of the summertime tourists. Halloween only seems to come to his mind when his owner mentions it or begins to decorate for it mid-September. When Ivan does begin to get the decorations out Russia-cat gets far too comfortable in the organs of one of the pumpkins Ivan has made. 

“Really, my little cat?” He crouches down to pet his loveable but somewhat mischievous cat. 

“Meow.” (Da.) Russia-cats beady eyes will be looking at Ivan like: “I’m cute and a cat. What are you not understanding? I’m number one now, BELLY RUBS human BELLY RUBS!”

hii im back!! and i’ve finally read through all the fae au lore for everyone that’s been released so far! ok first off, it’s absolutely crazy how cool the chaotix turned out to be,,, i really like vector’s design in particular! but both charmy and espio look amazing too,, i like how the wisteria flower works as pio’s head + the little hat on charmy is super cute <3 the rabbits being higher members in the court is also a very cool detail, they’re the firsts to be introduced as part of the court so far too i think?? i love their wings :D, vanilla’s are sooo long and wide. it’s awesome.

we sure have a lot of spring fairies… aside from rouge who’s revealed to be a winter fae, do you have plans for any other characters currently? i was pondering about who sonic was referring to in his own intro post: “their current goal is to wake up early enough to spend a few days in the Winter - to challenge their fastest fae to a race to prove they're the fastest out of anyone” and honestly i think beside shadow (but since shadow’s a season) the only one who would fit this description is jet,,, babylon rogues as winter fae :0?? speaking of trio, it’s kinda sad that omega won’t be around in this au for team dark shenanigans, im wrecking my brain for a possible encounter but i really dunno how that would work out when faes and eggman never mesh together rip. Thank you sm! They're not all spring fairies, they just all wake around the same time! Knuckles and Tails are in the Autumn Court, Amy's Summer and Sonic's Spring, it just doesn't matter too much as they all hang out anyways and none of them are high members. Spring, Summer and Fall fairies all wake Spring, and die in Autumn, but they all belong to different courts. Winter fae don't die, some hibernate some don't but they're all pretty elusive - Sonic doesn't know who's the fastest of them but to find out he has to wake up early and ask them himself - this is how he accidentally runs into Shadow.

Currently I've vague plans for the SatAM crew and Rouge (maybe Cosmo? but she's sorta already a plant so it feels like cheating), but I'm brainstorming for any others, the Rogues are definitely a consideration!

At this point we probably have a good idea about all the things Silver is used to doing that would cause Espio to worry about him more often than he already does - you know, all that self-destructive type of "placing anything and everything before himself" and its inevitable consequences - but do you think there's anything Espio does that'd cause Silver to "extra worry" in a similar way? (also sorry if you've already been asked a question like this before, my brain's not really firing on all cylinders atm)

It's a very good question, because I struggle with finding out what Espio's flaws are. A problem I am kind of running into with my writing is that he is... too perfect. Does that make sense? But he can get himself out of basically every problem because he's well-trained and diligent, he's the straight man and good at being the straight man in most cases, he's soulful and intelligent, ruthless without it getting in the way of his actions or causing him to make mistakes, his more self-opinionated aggrandising is accentuated by the fact he's so good at fighting, and he is a nice blend of social and withdrawn alike. So... it feels like there is not much for Silver to worry about in the first place, because Espio is just really very good at handling himself. I really need to look into Espio more, because there must be something he's bad at, haha.

Hmm, now I am thinking. Espio does often get dragged along with Vector's and Charmy's shenanigans in Sonic X, definitely at times against his will. Would that be a flaw, that he gets steamrolled by his colleagues and their zany plans? I can see Silver worry about such a thing, because Silver is absolutely not someone who follows the herd and lets himself be mouthed off so easily. His way of reacting (namely in anger) is not the best response, but it is one wherein his mission and his values remain protected and unchanged until Silver himself begins to see that there's something wrong with them. Espio's meanwhile can get compromised when Vector and Charmy are being too forceful, maybe? That would make a good flaw. And in TMOSTH, if I remember correctly, Espio's also not so adept at lying and keeping his composure: he gets flustered somewhat easily when Tails and Barry begin pushing him. But Silver himself doesn't lie in the first place and has little composure to keep at times, so I feel like that is something he's less worried about.

So overall, a flaw I think Silver might worry about is Espio's inability to keep his values and decisions from getting overrun by his colleagues. But I think we can also conclude I might need to do more research on Espio to get a better grasp of his personality🤔

Backstory:

Ceffy is a squirrel that lived in a remote part of Mobius for most of her life. She lived as a hoarder who would buy, sell, and trade items for a living. Her ability to open a pocket dimension made it easy for her to move out from her parents house and around the world to continue seeking out collecting the strangest of items.

After discovering Earth, she moves there in order to add more items to her collection. She freeloads in a tree down the street from Espio and co.'s apartment. They all meet Ceffy and gradually she is introduced to the rest of the cast, eventually getting dragged in with their shenanigans. Her story includes her learning the importance of friendship and the sacrifices it takes to keep the people you care about in your life.

AU SUMMARY:

Triple☆Stars is a band au centred around Sonic, Silver and Shadow where i seem to draw and talk about them doing anything but actually making music! They're managed by Eggman whose sole reason behind bringing them together was to make a profit to fuel his own company - he's a terrible manager who overworks, manipulates and ignores them but unfortunately, it's a little difficult for them to leave him due to a contract they had signed when this all first began (and trust they really want to)!

This au mainly follows their daily life in their shared apartment as well as any other shenanigans they may get up to with other characters!!

If I understood the condition better and had more motivation I'd want to make a plural Amy where each different take on her is a personality in her system. That'd be neat.

Tho before SEGA went "fuck you, they're ageless now" Amy was eight before SA made her 12 (tho strangely kept Tails 8 and made the 16 yo Charmy 6) so you could explain the big changes in personality as "Well of course she's different now, she's fucking 35"

Tho it's also funny saying "Literally all of Sonic canon happened in 1991." (Which I personally explain Sonic/Amy/Robotnik's age change as time stone shenanigans, tho I also sort of see the Sonic cast as replaced with look-a-likes when they got too old to play the character)

the chaos emeralds spawn from a planet where thousands of chaos emeralds spew out of it (if im remembering that part correctly)

knuckles' dad experiemented on his egg when he wasnt born yet, ??? i forgot why but i think involves him being green at some point

theres a whole prophecy involving tails becoming a god, and he becomes this giant with abs and the worst thing iv seen in my life with the worst panels ive laid my eyes on after every panel drawn by penders and he has to kill mogul (who doesnt die for some reason despute that being part of his destiny i believe) and hes told about it through a weird ass uncle

also tails' parents are revolutionaries who think the acorn family have to be taken down, this is actually one of the more interesting arcs

sally was with geoffrey saint john who while not having a canonical age in a flashback its shown hes much older than alias (who in currebt time is sallys brother and 21, sally is 16) (im taking this information with a grain of salt i cannot prove this one yet)

shadow has a brother,this is the least ridiculous thing ive mentioned

charmy is royalty, married to another bee girl, and got brain damage at some point after eggman tried to suck the life out of every mobian he caught to fuel his machines and this is after making sonic believe he disintegrated/killed all his friends and everyone he knew

eggman is not human and neither is maria and gerald theyre an evolutionary/mutated offshoot from humans after aliens decided to experiement on humanity by dumping weird shit on the planet which is why theres talking anthropomorphic animals, also the offshoot is supposed to be distinguished by four fingers but they forget this deatik if theyre actully importnt to the plot or have relevance

scourge the hedgehog(anti sonic/ bad boy green sonic) has daddy issues, this is shown through a fathers day mini where in an attempt to get at sonic in his own home finds Jules (sonics dad who was roboticized at some point) and this man just calls out this green bastard until hes crawling out the window trying not to cry

Amy has a cousin named Rob 'o the hedge whos a prince if im remembering correctly, amy is related to royalty yep

eggman canonically dies early in the comic and is replaced by his alternate self who did achieve world domination and is modern eggman as we know it, (dead eggman being SatAM robotnik/classic robotnik if im not mistaken on this)

Vector the Crocodile, head of the Chaotix Detective Agency, relaxes in his space-craft - which is just a scrap-heap escape pod he’s somehow managed to get flying again and had Tails install a steering system on, among other amenities (even if it’s questionable just how much the ship NEEDS a mini-fridge) The Chaotix - consisting of Vector, Espio, Charmy, and on some rare occassions Mighty (he house sits for the crew while they’re out n about), are a group of questionably capable detectives who somehow always manage to technically succeed in the end; they also sometimes end up stuck in space for quite a while on jobs, so it’s good to have Mighty at home to keep the Agency itself running, especially since he’s rather antsy about the idea of leaving Mobius’s atmosphere himself - Angel Island or maybe Little Planet is the farthest he’s willing to go. I kinda picture the Chaotix in Batroid to be a group that would be fun to follow if they were the protagonists of a weekly shenanigans saturday morning cartoon with adventures to random planets or even just shenanigans on their own craft in space; their craft is probably like 50% Duct Tape at this point and one of Vector’s tried n true solutions to get it running again if it breaks down is to bang on the dashboard like it’s a jukebox and that somehow DOES work

Sonic Heroes (2003) Story Review

Disclaimer: I will be judging this game by the plot and writing, not the gameplay.

Introduction

Greetings, mortals! For today's review, we'll be looking at the cheesy but endearing Sonic Heroes.

This is a new series of mine, in which I’ll be going into slightly more detail about my thoughts on the main series Sonic game storylines, and why I think they're either well written and engaging, or an absolute trainwreck (or somewhere in-between). I’ll be giving my stance on the character portrayals, visuals, soundtracks, voice actors, and what themes/messages they had to offer. Keep in mind that these are just my own personal thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree, feel free to share your own thoughts and opinions!

Anyway, let us begin! ^^

Plot

Neo Metal Sonic goes against Dr. Eggman, bringing Team Sonic and Team Rose to him under the impression that it is Eggman, while Eggman sends the Chaotix Detective Agency after Neo Metal Sonic. Also, Rouge finds Shadow in a pod locked up by Eggman guarded by E-123 Omega. Rouge awakens Shadow and the two reprogram Omega and form Team Dark to join the other three teams on their own. Meanwhile, Neo Metal Sonic is copying data from each of the teams for his plan.

Characters

I think the relationship and dynamic of the four teams all seem like good friendships.

Team Sonic, consisting of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, are friends who know how to work together. Sonic is mentoring Tails, and Knuckles seems to be the older brother figure of the group, which is nice.

I find Team Rose's relationship to be very wholesome. Amy is still a good character, despite her moving towards the crazy fangirl trope when it comes to her crush on Sonic. She was willing to help her friends, Cream and Big find their missing pets, which was nice of her. She’s still helping others and I like that. Big kind of had the mentality of "protect at all costs", which was nice, since there was a tiny rabbit on the team. Cream was caring, and kind of seemed like the most concerned in the group.

Team Dark is easily my favorite out of the four teams. I love their dynamic and friendship, it's a very comforting and exciting trio to see work together. I love watching them work together as a team and see how they love and care for each other despite their hard pasts. Regardless of how much Sonic talks about friendship and teamwork, ironically, Team Dark seems to be the one where the characters are the closest. Their relationship truly brings out the best in Shadow, Rouge and Omega.

I've always loved Team Chaotix's dynamic. They're such a hilarious and awesome team. In Sonic Heroes, they're a struggling detective agency who are barely capable of paying the rent, and are willing to take on any commission they come across, and throughout the story, they often find themselves getting in comedic shenanigans. Each member contributes something to the group: Vector is the muscle and comic relief, Espio is the calm, cool and collected ninja and Charmy is the eccentric, excitable young kid. For me, Team Chaotix’s misfit personalities and dynamics with each other is one of the biggest reasons why they’re amazing.

Metal Sonic was at his PEAK in this game, achieving a new form, Neo Metal Sonic. Neo Metal betrayed Eggman, locked him up, and analyzed data from the heroes and the aquatic god of destruction, Chaos (via Big's pet Froggy, who was mutated by Chaos in SA1). Neo Metal, with all his newly acquired power, plans to overthrow the world after transforming into his best form yet... Metal Overlord. This game highlights how ambitious he is. He wants to crush Sonic and rule a robot kingdom. The dialogue also tells us how insecure he is too. He isn't a mindless Badnik. He's adapted over time, and now he's definitely a three-dimensional character. After the battle, he admits defeat. Even with all that data, he's no match for teamwork.

It's a shame he never became as big of a deal after this game, as he had regressed into a mindless, subservient robot henchman in all of his subsequent game appearances. Yes, he was kind of the main antagonist in Sonic Free Riders, but that wasn't a main series game.

Visuals

I think the visuals look amazing by 2003-2004 standards. They really make sure that when the characters emote, you know what emotion they are conveying. In my opinion, Sonic Heroes has the best presentation out of the entire Adventure Era.

Soundtrack

I consider this game's soundtrack to be my third favorite in the Sonic series next to Sonic 06's soundtrack and Shadow the Hedgehog's soundtrack. The main theme, Sonic Heroes is really good. I really enjoyed all four of the team themes. We Can (Team Sonic's theme) and Follow Me (Team Rose's theme) are really good, and This Machine (Team Dark's theme) and Team Chaotix (Team Chaotix's theme) are two of my absolute favorites. Also, What I'm Made Of is an absolute banger.

Voice Acting

I must say, the Adventure Era voice cast had significantly improved by the time Heroes came around. In fact, I would consider their voice work in Heroes to be their best performances yet. Ryan Drummond (Sonic) sounds very energetic and lively. William Corkery (Tails) is often criticized by many, with some even considering him to be the worst Tails voice, but do keep in mind that he was only nine years old when he voiced the character. Scott Dreier (Knuckles) has improved since SA2. David Humphrey (Shadow) once again does a great job, and Lani Minella once again nails Rouge. Jon St. John did an amazing job voicing Omega, making him sound robotic, but still very threatening. Jennifer Doulliard once again does a good Amy, filled with passion and a girly attitude. Sarah Wulfeck makes for a good Cream. Jon St. John voices Big as well, and he sounds just like he did in SA1. Marc Biagi (Vector), Emily Corkery (Charmy) and Bill Corkery (Espio) all did a good job voicing their respective characters, and Deem Bristow (Eggman) does a good job as well. This was his last acting performance before he died in 2005, the same year SEGA decided to replace the cast with the 4Kids voice cast.

Theme/Message

While Heroes does have a different plot and story from SA1 and SA2, I think Metal Sonic still fits the Adventure Era's overall theme of things returning from the past that you cannot run away from any longer. He was last seen in Sonic CD, so he would want revenge for being left on Little Planet (well, Sonic 4 changed that, but that game didn't exist at the time).

Conclusion

Overall, I find Sonic Heroes' story to be quite entertaining. Sure, it does have a more basic narrative compared to its predecessors and the games that immediately followed, but it's still well-written and very enjoyable in my opinion.
