The Top 10 Picture Books I Posted This Year! 

Some don’t surprise me at all (Brambly Hedge -- it’s so pretty! how could anyone not want this art on their blog! -- or Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood -- the poetry is so meaningful, it was a book I had to go buy for myself) but there are others that really do shock me (strange scifi Barbie? a basic Dora book? a Baby Einstein rhymes book?)

It really is neat to see what resonates with some people. Honestly it’s one of my favourite parts of running this blog, seeing which of the strange assortment of picture books I find really hit someone in a meaningful way. Some of the tags I get of people reminiscing about reading these books as kids are honestly just the best thing ever. I can’t wait to see which books speak to folks next year.

SHENANIGANS: where Mai gives headcanons to the Voices in your head™️ based purely off vibes.

This episode: THE VOICES IN GARDENING!

Yeah this was supposed to be the next in line but then my friend decided to get high. But that's over so onto what I was gonna write!!

As usual, have a Complimentary Connie to protect from potential spoilers!

Voice of the HERO: as stated previously, Hero is good at a lot of things. Gardening with her is a dream. She doesn't use invasive plants, she waters and fertilizes them on time, she is a wonderful carer of any plant you give her. But she isn't as immerse in gardening as a hobby, so don't expect a big thing. She probably has a couple of vegetables and herbs in a lil corner to use for her cooking.

Voice of the SKEPTIC: He has no green thumb. He isn't interested, so do not expect him to be in the garden. But if he has to, he will make sure they won't die. Probably goes into deep research about the plant he has to care for, all the while grumbling about he could be reading something better (even though most plants are as self-maintained as they could get...). Ends up putting way too much effort and invested for someone who "hates gardening".

Voice of the PARANOID: He is sooooo nervous. What if the plant dies?! What if he did something wrong!? It took a while for the hobby to really sink in that "no, this plant won't die, if you forgot to water it for ONE DAY". and when it did, he really embraced the hobby. Probably has some sweet smelling flowers that are easy to maintain and kept indoors (so he can smell them as he tries to sleep).

Voice of the STUBBORN: don't get me wrong, he won't INTENTIONALLY ruin the garden...but has rolled onto a flower patch once or twice, after a spar. He has agreed to pay it back by tending it!! He's...not good at it. Plants are so small and delicate and he's so big and massive! But give him something more solid to take care of and it won't die. That's as far as you can get with him. Though, despite all of that, his room always smells of poppy flowers from a small pot, where he planted a couple...wonder what that means (:3)

Voice of the SMITTEN: HOW THE FUCK DID THE GUY MADE A HEDGE MAZE?! That is to say, he is...weirdly determined. It's not that he's even necessarily knowledgeable, stuff just...happens around him! Like something straight outta Disney. It's a miracle that they lived in the Long Quiet and not a tangible garden with actual logic otherwise it won't be a Princess that's breaking his heart...oh, and his favorites are any flowers, particularly roses and carnations.

Voice of the COLD: he's somehow more knowledgeable than Skeptic. Everyone chalks it up to being around the Belle for so long. But only when it comes to vegetables and fruit bearing plants. And he won't take care of it himself. He just either tells you what to do, or get Belle to do it. Though, once in a blue moon, you can see him tending to something. It's rare, and the plant needs like...the bare minimum of care, but give it time (or Smitten's Disney magic) and he will grow an entire acre...of Marijuana.

Voice of the BROKEN: Being so connected to the Wild means that she knows things by default. She cares for Wild, most of the time, tending to her trees and roots even if it's not needed, often by assimilating with the collective to share nutrients. Sometimes she even takes Wounded Wild on a stroll. She TECHNICALLY cares for plants this way, so that's something(?)

Voice of the CHEATED: being the tender girlfriend she is, she has taken it on herself to care for Wild/Broken from the outside. But there's so much a forest needs by outside. Best she can do is plant new saplings around the parameter. She loves fruit trees because it gives you a reward for her hard work. Many had sadly died, in her path to learn how to take care of her sometimes-tree girlfriend. The lucky plant is a tomato plant that has really withstand the odds. She named it "Charlie" and she is protective of it.

Voice of the OPPORTUNIST: Thorn loves to garden, and so did he! At first, he wasn't so invested in gardening, as he was just spending quality time with her. But as time passed, and their little garden together grew, it became clear that Thorn was struggling to keep up with the care, so he took it on himself to do more work. Overtime it became a real passion of his. Something about tending to something so beautiful and delicate resonated with him, I supposed. And the end results were worth the hours he spent. His favorite flower are actually lilies.

Voice of the HUNTED: he's not interested in planting as he is in eating them. He'd love to nibble on plants, but he also won't eat from their flock's well tended garden. If anything tries to come to eat it in the middle of the night, he's there to shoo it away and if it's bug enough, he'd hunt it down. Though, he is the frequent seed collector for the flock, since his feathers get caught in all sorts of stuff, making him an impromptu pollinator. He likes dandelions for how they fly in the breeze.

Voice of the CONTRARIAN: while she doesn't suck, nor would she harm any plants...she also likes to do shit that's funny. Like mixing weed (the wild kind) into seed packets so the guys have to spend extra effort in getting rid of em. Or releasing a couple of caterpillars to scare Paranoid. Nothing permanent, or harmful, but a garden to her is yet another battleground for her mischief. However, her efforts to spread weeds inadvertently help increase the biodiversity of the garden, attract natural pollinators like bees and butterflies (how did they get here?!), and some weeds and moss climbing the walls is kinda cool looking. That just enabled her to keep it up.

BONUS: Helping the Wounded Wild.

The Wounded Wild's forest wasn't much to look at. It wasn't a real forest, so it didn't had much. But Broken reassured through their connection that she has someone who will help.

The next day, the whole flock showed up with the plants they cultivated in their gardens. Greens, weeds, flowers, saplings and so forth. Soon, the Wild went from an exposed network of pain to a protected body of nature. She was healing, and in a way, they all found solace in a little green, so she allows them to use her woods as a sanctuary from whatever troubles them.

I've had a theory while rereading SBG with a friend, and idk if its been discussed yet. I was thinking about how in ch 82, they learned the Facility is trying to make supersoldiers. I was curious about how the Phantoms would be supersoldiers if teenagers could take them down... but they aren't. I think the kids are.

If you pay attention, you notice some odd things about their physical capabilities.

In ch48 Tyler got himself half off that tree, and then Ash did the other half. Tyler was impaled and Ash was balanced on a ladder, neither of which are good positions for exerting large amounts of strength.

Then, in 73 Ash breaks the infected's neck and they comment on how its an impressive amount of strength.

In 77, Ben accurately throws the hedge trimmers and they fly perfectly straight and impale the Phantom, which definitely isn't natural.

Finally, in 84, Charlie notices how all the kids are outrunning him, and then they seemingly effortlessly throw a guard to the ground and snap his knee.

When RiD15 RatBat and his Mechservant Catilla began overseeing the Earth campaign for the Crown City bound Decepticons, the filthy rich bat decided to hedge his bets, and orchestrate an assassination of Optimus Prime. While technically retired, Optimus was still a major component of the new high council on Cybertron, and therefore a problem to his plans. Regardless of Optimus’ desires, a Prime was still required to lead Cybertron, even if Optimus tried to reduce it post war as a figure head while the council lead.

Able to manipulate a chain of events in his favor, a small unit of Decepticons insurgents, unable to be traced back to RatBat, attacked Optimus when he was diverted to a back road during road construction.

The Decepticons were successful in their attack, the Prime was dead. Or was he?

In actuality, Optimus had been saved by Smokescreen, and Phase Shifted to a secure location; the greying body left behind was the result of Light Bending tech and a long rusted Centurion drone. Heavily damaged, Optimus and Smokescreen agreed Optimus would remain a target, but Cybertron ultimately still needed a Prime, so once more, Smokescreen was offered the Matrix. Accepting, Smokescreen evolved into a new Prime, while Optimus reverted back into his original Orion Pax body.

After explaining the matter to Ratchet, Bulkhead, Ultra Magnus, Jazz and Windblade through a secure line, Smokescreen equipped Orion with Light Bender tech to disguise himself further. Afterwards Orion goes to rejoin the Council under a new temp identity, while Smokescreen takes the Matrix to Earth.

RatBat does realize soon something isn’t right, but for now is content Optimus is out of the picture. A bit too late he discovers via Steeljaw and Glowstrike’s units that the Matrix survived and is on Earth, and naturally he assumes it passed to Bumblebee, but was surprised it instead went to Smokescreen, or rather Facadimus Prime.

Apparently Smokescreen tried to call himself “Obfusimus Prime”, but Strongarm and Cloudraker thought it sounded too much like Optimus, while Sideswipe flat out called it stupid.

Facadimus was settled on, and when asked by Bee what he was doing here, the new Prime said he came observe Earth’s finest Autobot leader, and because Heatwave wasn’t available, he came to see Bee instead! Bee is unamused, but Facadimus reassures him he’s just kidding on the later. Indeed Facadimus does shadow Bee to figure out how to be a good leader, trying to piece together what he’s learned from Optimus too, but put his own rinse on it.

Strongarm and the others do find it a bit weird how the new Prime seems content to just let Bee mostly call the shots, while Facadimus respects that Bee is doing his own thing; there are times, though, Bee insists Fascadimus needs to take charge to get accustomed to his new role.

Later on, several members of Team Prime and the Bee Team find themselves caught up in the Legacy Wars, a multiversal conflict that saw Fascadimus Prime team up with Skybound Optimus Prime, Energon Sentinel Prime’s, TFA Optimus Magnus’ and G1 S4 Rodimus Prime’s teams to help clean up Jhiaxus’ and Staxxus’ ambitions. One unusual matter saw Facadimus, Predaking, Miko and Professor Princess deal with a Pony corrupted by Unicron’s scales thanks to Jhiaxus.

Braverman, Dean, Skybound Spike, Skybound Carly, Kicker, Mischa, Daniel, Nucle-Ai, Grahm, Thompson, Maddie, Meister, Sari, Russel, Charlie Watson-Clay, Fowler, Denny, Hank, Jack, Raf and Miko in particular met during this conflict and became friends.

Post Legacy War, the Cyberverse kids fell into the EarthSpark universe, and as part of Quintus Prime’s chosen, reunited with Facadimus Prime, Rodimus Prime and Energon Sentinel Prime’s crews once more to take part in the Age of the Primes conflict.

I LOATHE winter with the power of one thousand suns and the first signs of spring (crocuses pushing up through the snow, little buds unfurling on the branches of my garden hedge) are a balm on my soul. The days start to stretch out. Cool, sunny mornings where you can start to feel the heat of the sun on your face. Spring!!

Favorite Book: oh, earthsea maybe? Or the shining mountain, which is a classic mountaineering book (my favourite genre!)

Do you play any instruments? : no, although I've tried and failed at many! Piano, violin, trumpet, chanter: all abandoned due to my general rubbishness and non-musicality

Do you have any pets? : I'm allergic to almost everything with fur so no, but I did used to have pet rats as a kid.
