Charlie Collins

Charles Michael Collins was an accountant who lived in Gotham Estates, a suburb of Gotham City. Along with his wife, Bonnie, and their son, Kenny, Charlie had lived an exceptionally ordinary life.  

All of this changed one fateful night when Charlie yelled at a fellow motorist who had cut him off on the highway.  The motorist turned out to be none other than the infamous Joker, the murderous Clown Prince of Crime.  The Joker tracked Charlie down and only spared his life on the condition that Charlie ‘owe him a favor.’  Charlie agreed and then promptly changed his name, relocated his family and prayed the villain would not find him.  

Yet The Joker never lost track of ol' Charlie and some two years later he finally reached out to collect.  Fearful of what might happen to his family were he not to comply, Charlie agreed to travel back to Gotham and assist The Joker.  The task that was asked of Charlie was for him to merely open a door so that Harley Quinn could wheel in a cake for a party.  It all seemed harmless enough.

Although the party was for Commissioner Jim Gordon; and the cake contained a paralyzing gas.  Charlie watched on in horror as The Joker planted a bomb on the temporarily paralyzed Jim Gordon.  He then realized the doorknob was coated with a strong adhesive, trapping Charlie to die with Gordon and the others.   

Thankfully, Charlie had kept his wits and managed to leave a signal for The Batman.  the Dark Knight arrived in time to defuse the bomb and release Charlie and others.  

As The Joker attempted to escape, Charlie cornered him with a bomb he had taken from the villain’s van.  He stated that he was going to blow himself up and take The Joker along with him.  Caught off guard, a frightened Joker yelled out for Batman's help.  He surrendered all the information he had gathered on Charlie and his family.

As Batman took The Joker into custody, Charlie revealed the joke was on him for once.  The bomb was only a gag and did not contain any explosive.  A joke which Batman seemed to appreciate.  Finally free, Charlie returned home to his wife and son, now much more appreciative of his ordinary life.

Actor Ed Begley Jr. provided the voice for Charlie Collins, with the character appearing in the seventh episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Joker’s Favor.’

Batman AU where

the Jokester saves Charlie Collins from Owlman, like a sort of reverse version of The Joker's Favor.

Like, Charlie Collins becomes...The Straight Man! A third comedic vigilante to go with Harlequin and Jokester. Harley is Jokester's GF, and Charlie is Jokester's platonic BFF.

Charlie's intentionally not let into the meat of most plans because they are planned around his confusion. When the Jokester puts on stand up comedy at theaters in friendly areas of town, Charlie is the Abbott to Jokester's Costello.

Heck, maybe they put on Abbott and Costello sketches.

They develop a running gag of saying "Third Base!" whenever anyone around them says "I don't know".

Heroic Harvey Dent, interrogating an Owlman minion and yelling in his face gravelly like the trilogy Dark Knight: "WHERE ARE THEY?"

Crook: "I-I-I don't know-"

Charlie and Jokester from the background: "THIRD BASE!"

Heroic Harvey Dent: (exasperated silence, you can tell he's rolling his eyes so hard under the two-tone mask)

Crook: ....????
