#BLOG POST NO. 2
By Angel Jean Gupit
June 2023
Tumblr media
The experiences of many members of the LGBTQ+ community are reflected in Brandon Teena's story, a transgender man who is victimized by society. By acknowledging and apologizing for the mistakes she made in her reporting on Brandon Teena's narrative, Donna Minkowits demonstrates that as a journalist, she has thought back on her past errors and worked to learn more about LGBTQ+ society in order to prevent making the same ones again. In the time of Brandon Teena, discrimination against those who identify as neither men nor women was evident. Even in the present day, there remains prejudice and discrimination against those who don't comply to social norms, especially in the sectors responsible for enforcing laws and preserving public order.
"Boys don't cry" is a dramatization of Brandon Teena's true narrative, which was sparked by the village voice story. According to the story, 21-year-old transman Brandon Teena was severely beaten and raped by two other young men on December 31, 1993, for being trans. A week later, they shot and stabbed him to death close to Falls City. This horrifying incident demonstrates the risk homophobia poses; it is wrong to take someone's life because of how they are different from other people. The author of the Village Voice article including Brandon's experience, Donna Minkowitz, expressed regret for the blunder she made in the piece due to her lack of knowledge regarding trans individuals. She claimed that by basing her evaluation of Brandon's situation on her own experiences, she had made an error. Minkowitz describes her reporting mistakes in a brand-new column for The Voice, adding, "For years, I had wanted to apologize for what I now understand, with some shame, was the article's implicit anti-trans framing. Her own approach, which was based on the notion that Teena's transsexual identity was the result of internalized homophobia, is criticized. In other instances, Minkowitz noted that she focused too much on her perceived homophobia when speaking with Teena's mother JoAnn Brandon rather on a sadness or the anecdotes about Teena's upbringing that she related. The author Donna Minkowitz's article demonstrates both the society's terrible truth and the value of a parental presence in a child's life. According to the report, Brandon Teena was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to a traditional patriarchal family. He was supported and reared by his mother, who had him when he was a teenager. Because the author knew little about transgender people and conservatism, she mistook JoAnn- Brandon's mother for a homophobic parent. But amidst those, she realized that despite Joann disapproval on Brandon’s gender orientation, she loves her son and grieves for his death. She regretted not supporting him and learning what her son had been as a person.
Another topic that needs to be included in this essay is how unfairly and unprofessionally Brandon was treated by the police when he was detained for a particular offense; they called him a "thing" in jail, which is horrible in many ways. As a hermaphrodite, Brandon Teena identifies with the statement, "I was born a girl, I am a girl, but I have the feelings and intentions of a man. Many people in the society are prejudiced against me because it was mentioned that transsexuals and other gender identities other than being a man or a woman existed as a mere whisper in a storm of moral, psychological, and even legal judgment. This demonstrates how earlier generations lacked knowledge about how gender orientation varies depending on an individual's upbringing and surroundings. In addition, it says that Falls City Sheriff Charles Laux declined to apprehend the perpetrators of Brandon's rape because he asked Minkowitz at the time, "What type of person was she? The first few times we got her arrested, she was posing as a boy. This demonstrates how absurd it is for people in positions of power to alter or correct injustices. Even treating Brandon Teena as a human was not an option for those who have a homophobia. Moreover, with this article, people became more informed about what happened in the society, and this incident pushed LGBTQ + organization to fight for their rights.
As a conclusion, the article about Brandon Teena discusses the unfortunate experiences that trans men have, despite the fact that it is biased and, as the author herself admitted, is the most offensive and inaccurate piece of journalism ever produced. As a result, Donna Minkowitz expressed regret, admitted her "mistakes," and claimed that she was naive at the time. Despite being a well-known journalist, her public apology is a highly admirable gesture. This demonstrates how carefully she thought back on her past and was able to correct the error with Brandon Teena's story. Furthermore, Donna Minkowitz's essay can help in educating readers about the truth behind the real-life incident depicted in the article "Village Voice Story," which could throw some light on a variety of topics relating to prejudice against LGBTQ+ persons. A significant accomplishment of the current generation is the gradual granting of the LGBTQ+ group the care and protections to which they are entitled.

Page 4: Kathie Lee Gifford is talking to NBC bigwigs about coming back to Today and they’re hot over the idea but Hoda Kotb is not pleased and Jenna Bush Hager is feeling threatened because Jenna never really grabbed the audience like Kathie Lee did, Martha Stewart and Gwyneth Paltrow are heading into the holidays trash-talking each other even more than usual and their pals have nowhere to hide -- they’re snippier than ever and can’t get through the week without saying something crass but the trouble is they have the same friends and they use some of the same chefs and caterers and crew -- all their friends in the Hamptons including the Seinfelds and Beyonce and Jay-Z and Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley and Rachael Ray are trying to keep out of it but it’s impossible because Martha and Gwyneth are both screaming for loyalty
Page 5: Legal hotshot and writer Jeffrey Toobin has been shelved by the New Yorker magazine for showing off his willie to co-workers during a Zoom conference call -- witnesses say Toobin was masturbating but he insists it was a blooper
Page 6: Dolly Parton was so lovestruck when she met Elvis Presley that she nearly chucked her marriage and career to shack up with Elvis -- Dolly is ready to tell all about Elvis after decades of protecting her husband Carl Dean and Elvis’ only child Lisa Marie Presley -- Dolly was in her late 20s and Elvis was in his late 30s when they had their sizzling encounter where she got dolled up to meet Elvis in a Nashville office and discuss working together and he wanted to do a duet but she didn’t trust herself to work with him and she didn’t even let Elvis do a cover of her song I Will Always Love You -- even though Dolly didn’t actually cheat on Carl she sure was tempted and she’s felt guilty about it ever since

Page 9: Distressed Kelly Clarkson and her two toddlers are in therapy to help cope with the anguish brought on by her divorce from Brandon Blackstock -- the talk show host is especially struggling because the split is playing out so publicly and the kids are seeing things about their mom on TV and she feels immense guilt about the divorce but knows it was the best decision because she wasn’t happy married to Brandon though she did try but staying in a marriage just for the kids wasn’t an option for her -- Kelly was deeply wounded when her father-in-law Narvel Blackstock’s management company recently sued her for $1.4 million in alleged unpaid commissions but she’s speaking with her ex privately in an effort to resolve the issue out of court but Kelly suspects he’s using it as a bargaining chip for a bigger settlement and also feels he’s using the kids against her as a weapon

Me: FUCK HIM UP BABY BOY
B: I love callie
[egregious puking noises]
Look ship whatever you want
Just acknowledge when things are problematic
Ship brallie to your heart’s content as long as you don’t condone in*est IRL
I’m not here to police ppl, I’m just giving opinions no one asked for cause that’s the entire purpose of this blog
Oh no jude
Poor boy
I literally hate brandon sm he needs to get his shit together
[aggressive vibing to the theme song]
[weeping] you’re surrounded by love and you’re wanted
I used to think the theme was cheesy
Now i literally love it sm
The RUBBER DUCKY
THE HAND HOLDING
Ugh ads
I really think people are overlooking jude’s feelings rn
Omfg stef’s mom (her name is sharon, bee)
I love her
I love jude and sharon’s dynamic it’s
Chef’s kiss
Immaculate
Sh: I’m not gonna break up with him cause I love his bed
“Subtext, by calvin klein ;)”
Oh right this is the bed that fucks up their marriage
Ju: I’m a taco :D
Me: [I can’t find it but the clip from b99 where boyle says I’m gonna need a minute
It cuts to a black screen that says one minute later than cuts back to charles tear and snot stained face after clearly crying a lot
Boyle: sorry for the sobbing and the wailing and the weird snorting noise I made at the end
But yeah that’s me rn]
Oh god not more jesus lexi drama
I wish mariana and jesus got along better
Also jake t austin jesus walked so noah centineo jesus could run
I love that typed out it looks like I mean jesus the religious figure
Oh shit
Lexi needs to stop gatekeeping and mariana needs to stop taking the division of time as a personal offense
I mean she and jesus are both taurus so I’m not surprised they’re clashing
Oh god callie why did you run away w wyatt
I hate wyatt
I hate the aliens dialogue
W: the government is making it seem fake oOoOoH
Literally hate it
Callie “he’s better off without me” addams foster is getting on my last fuckin nerve
Like the insensitivity?????
The not actually caring about the people around you under the guise of caring about them??????
The only difference between martyrdom and soupyslide is press coverage
The whole Wyatt And Callie On The Run thing is getting old and it’s been happening for like 10 minutes
Self sacrifice isn’t cute sis
WYATT WHAT THE FUCK
He claims to care about her and yet
Deletes the fucking voicemail from her mom??????????
What???????
Christ stef is fucking crying
Sh: my love…
STEF AND HER MOM BOTH CALL PPL MY LOVE
SO FUCKING CUTE
Now wyatt is playing the good guy???F???
Okay hold up
Look
Callie and brandon are both at fault for kissing each other at stef and lena’s wedding
which was SO cute btw
the wedding not the gross kiss
I will say that callie, who was literally r*ped by L*am, was incredibly emotionally volatile then bc everything with him had been stirred up and she just found out he wouldn’t go to jail
No one would be surprised if she did something impulsive and self destructive bc of the trauma, especially something related to having an inappropriate relationship with a foster brother
Brandon knew about all of this and he wasn’t having flashbacks or a bunch of trauma about anything
He should have stopped her or at least pushed her away
And he didn’t
I’m not saying Callie isn’t at fault too, what I am saying is that brandon had more responsibility in that situation and didn’t do what a decent person would do
WYATT AND BRANDON ARE BOTH BAD FOR CALLIE
SHE DOESN’T NEED A RELATIONSHIP RN SHE NEEDS A LOVING SUPPORTIVE FAMILY
Callie is so clearly sprialing rn
At least Wyatt is actually trying to help her
No one can handle a stressful situation in this show
I can’t describe how much I hate the pseudo end of the fucking world energy they’re going for
At least wyatt had the decency to not immediately try to share a bed w her
I like how flustered he gets cuddling her
That’s cute at least
I don’t like that callie didn’t consider that sharing a bed would make him nervous or uncomfy
OH SHIT THERE THEY ARE
MOMS HAVE ENTERED THE CHAT
And now callie, feeling trapped again, is going to run away yet again
And do something impulsive
Yet again
Jfc
Look I have trauma and a strong fight or flight response too, but I dont hurt the people I love
Hitching a ride with a trucker??????????? She’s going to put herself in a very avoidable irreversibly bad situation
I love mike getting to be a good dad figure
It’s rare with the whole alcoholic plot
I really hate that too btw
He has a comforting presence
Let him be a good dad
Mariana you can want to be vegan but pls don’t be a toxic vegan
Let people make their own choices
I love frazzled mike trying to be a good dad
I wish mariana would be a little bit more of a problem solver
If she doesn’t want any animal products or peanut butter offer to make your own lunch maybe??????
I hate how fast Jesus and Mariana forgave brandon after the whole “We ToOk YoU iN wHeN NoOnE eLsE wAnTeD yOu!!! sTeF iS mY mOm!!!!” bullshit
“Mom’s car won’t start” lmao
What the actual fuck callie
If she’s this at risk for such self destructive behavior she needs way more help
HOT GIRL WITH PINK MULLET
MARRY ME
Oh god not the begging for a job scene
I hate this part
I’m a little over half way done with the episode so I’ll cut it here, part 2 will be up shortly

Brokeback Mountain and Brandon Teena
i think for me, growing up where i grew up was both good and bad. i spent a large portion of my childhood lonely, i felt isolated from other people no matter if they where adults or children. where i live its what i’ll call “the most souther” part of the midwest, we have the poverty and ideology of small-town southern america even deep into the city, and so i often find myself relating more to LGBT characters from movies set in the south rather than the cities in the north/east.
for me, Brokeback mouton really spoke to my heart. the large about of terror both men had for loving each other, the way the wives reacted when they realized their husbands where in love with one another, the movie in its whole.
the movie goes deeper than two repressed gay men having a beer and fuck once a year, the movies dives deeper into showing us the fear these men had. jacks pain and longing to be with ennis, while ennis was so scared of the idea of loving him openly that his emotions where completely shut off and absent throughout their relationship.
when ennis was young, his father had showed him some horrible shit- a gay man from their town bloody, mutilated and dead. jack never knew of this, but i believe that was the root of Dennis’s fear. he didn’t want that to be jack; or himself.
he had probably known, and likely his father too, and thats why they decided to add that into the movie. that particular scene was one of the most striking and powerful for me.
jacks family, however emotionless they where, where not like ennis’s. however, he had a lot of internalized turmoil. the turmoil turning to great frustration as time went on.
over the 20 years in their relationship, there was a lot of lying, tension, and even agony. all because of what? their fear of judgement? or, their fear of the worst; death.
when jack was found dead and ennis found out, i felt my heart stop. i felt that pain in that moment, that crushing pain that ennis felt. all his fears had come true. in a frantic frenzy to find out what happened, he called his lovers widow, and she then (as i assume) knew why her husband was always so joyful to go on those fishing trips.
the whole movie is powerful- and painful. it shows our terror to be ourselves, and shows how we often are treated.
another movie that i find myself relating to the most would be Boys Don’t cry, which is a film about Brandon Teena, a trans man who was murdered based on his identity.
(TW for some of what i talk about coming after this, there will be specific TW for when violence is mentioned)
brandon teena was born in lincoln Nebraska, which i don’t live 3 hours away from, so this one scared my pants off.
he had had quite a troubled childhood; his father died 8 months before he was born, and he spent the first few years of his childhood living with his grandmother, then eventually his mother. (TW) when he was young, he was sexually abused by his uncle, and eventually sought counseling for this.
in 1993, after some legal trouble, he moved to falls city nebraska where he first started identifying as a man openly, and then met Lana Tisdel, and some convicts by the names of John Lotter and Marvin Nissen.
in late december 1993 brandon was arrested for forging checks, and Lana ended up paying his bail. he was thrown into a woman jail, and his girlfriend of course questioned him on it, to which he said he was a Hermaphrodite working towards a sex change, and they continued dating.
Brandon’s arrest was put in the papers, and so he was outted. now, heres the fucked up part; his murder.
now, i couldn’t make myself watch this far into the actual movie, so I’m going off of a wikipedia article now, but i know it was bad. so TW for this part.
this is copied from wikipedia but ill edit it some:
During a Christmas Eve party, Nissen and Lotter grabbed Teena and forced him to remove his pants, proving to Tisdel that Teena was anatomically female. Tisdel said nothing and looked only when they forced her. Lotter and Nissen later assaulted Teena, and forced him into a car. They drove to an area by a meat-packing plant in Richardson County, where they assaulted and gang raped him. They then returned to Nissen's home where Teena was ordered to take a shower. Teena escaped from Nissen's bathroom by climbing out the window, and went to Tisdel's house. He was convinced by Tisdel to file a police report, though Nissen and Lotter had warned Teena not to tell the police about the gang rape or they would "silence him permanently". Teena also went to the emergency room where a standard rape kit was assembled, but later lost. Sheriff Charles B. Laux questioned Teena about the rape; reportedly, he seemed especially interested in Teena's transsexuality, to the point that Teena found his questions rude and unnecessary, and refused to answer. Nissen and Lotter learned of the report, and they began to search for Teena. They did not find him, and three days later, the police questioned them. The sheriff declined to have them arrested due to lack of evidence.
Around 1:00 a.m. on December 31, 1993, Nissen and Lotter drove to Lambert's house and broke in. They found Lambert in bed and demanded to know where Teena was. Lambert refused to tell them. Nissen searched and found Teena under the bed. The men asked Lambert if there was anyone else in the house, and she replied that Phillip DeVine, who at the time was dating Tisdel's sister, was staying with her. They then shot and killed DeVine, Lambert and Teena in front of Lambert's toddler. Nissen later testified in court that he noticed that Teena was twitching, and asked Lotter for a knife, with which Nissen stabbed Teena in the chest, to ensure that he was dead. Nissen and Lotter then left, later being arrested and charged with murder.
one of the real kickers for me, is that brandon’s grave is written as “Daughter, Sister, And friend”.
Because Teena had neither commenced hormone replacement therapy nor had sex reassignment surgery, he has sometimes been identified as a lesbian by media reporters. However, some reported that Teena had stated that he planned to have sex reassignment surgery.
JoAnn Brandon sued Richardson County and Sheriff Laux for failing to prevent Brandon's death, as well as being an indirect cause. She won the case, which was heard in September 1999 in Falls City, and was awarded $80,000. District court judge Orville Coady reduced the amount by 85 percent based on the responsibility of Nissen and Lotter, and by one percent for Brandon's alleged contributory negligence. This led to a remaining judgment of responsibility against Richardson County and Laux of $17,360.97. In 2001, the Nebraska Supreme Court reversed the reductions of the earlier award reinstating the full $80,000 award for "mental suffering", plus $6,223.20 for funeral costs. In October 2001, the same judge awarded the plaintiff an additional $12,000: $5,000 for wrongful death, and $7,000 for the intentional infliction of emotional distress. Laux was also criticized after the murder for his attitude toward Teena – at one point, Laux referred to Brandon as "it". After the case was over, Laux served as commissioner of Richardson County and later as part of his community's council before retiring as a school bus driver. He has refused to this day to speak about his actions in the case and swore at one reporter who contacted him for a story on the murder's twentieth anniversary.
In 1999, Brandon became the subject of a biographical film entitled Boys Don't Cry, directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Hilary Swank as Teena and Chloë Sevigny as Tisdel. For their performances, Swank won and Sevigny was nominated for an Academy Award. Tisdel sued the producers of the film for unauthorized use of her name and likeness before the film's release. She claimed the film depicted her as "lazy, white trash, and a skanky snake". Tisdel also claimed that the film falsely portrayed that she continued the relationship with Teena after she discovered that Teena was transgender. She eventually settled her lawsuit against the movie's distributor for an undisclosed sum.[14][15]
JoAnn Brandon publicly objected to the media referring to her child as "he" and "Brandon". Following Hilary Swank's Oscar acceptance speech, JoAnn Brandon took offence at Swank for thanking "Brandon Teena" and for referring to him as a man. "That set me off", said JoAnn Brandon. "She should not stand up there and thank my child. I get tired of people taking credit for what they don't know. However, in 2013, JoAnn told a reporter that she accepted Teena being referred to as transgender in the media. Although she was unhappy with the way Boys Don't Cry portrayed the situation, she said about the film, "It gave them [gay and transgender advocates] a platform to voice their opinions, and I'm glad of that. There were a lot of people who didn't understand what it was she (Teena) was going through. We've come a long way". When asked to how the murder affects her life today, JoAnn replied, "I wonder about how my life would be different if she was still here with me. She would be such a joy to have around. She was always such a happy kid. I imagine her being a happy adult. And if being happy meant Teena living as a man, I would be fine with that."
Brandon, an interactive web artwork created in 1998 by Shu Lea Cheang, was named for Brandon Teena. The artwork was commissioned by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Much of the site's content relates to Brandon's story.[36]
The British duo Pet Shop Boys released a song called "Girls Don't Cry" (a bonus track on U.K. issue of I'm with Stupid) about Teena in 2006. Vancouver-based pop-punk band JPNSGRLS released the song "Brandon", off their debut 2014 album Circulation, in memory of Brandon Teena.
boys dont cry was very hard for me to watch because i felt a sense of attachment to brandon, both in personality and feeling. i felt like i really understood, and it scared me.
both brockback mountain and Boys Dont Cry are amazing movies, if you can, check them out. they deserve all the appreciation they can get.

Monuments to America’s Racist History Toppled Amid Mass Protests
Confederate monuments celebrating the United States' racist history are coming down in several states after being targeted by protesters over the past week.

Monuments celebrating the nation’s racist history are coming down in several states after being targeted by protesters over the past week. On Wednesday, the city of Philadelphia removed a statue of the city’s former racist police chief and mayor, Frank Rizzo, just days after protesters attempted to topple it and light it on fire. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said, “The statue represented bigotry, hatred, and oppression for too many people, for too long.”
In Virginia, Governor Ralph Northam is expected to order the removal today of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from the state Capitol grounds in Richmond after it was vandalized during the protests.
In Birmingham, Alabama, protesters toppled a statue of Confederate officer Charles Linn and vandalized a monument known as the Confederate Sailors and Soldiers Monument. Following the action, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin ordered the rest of the statue to be removed.
In Nashville, Tennessee, protesters toppled a statue of Edward Carmack, a racist politician and newspaper publisher who incited violence against Ida B. Wells for her reporting on lynchings.
Three Other Officers Involved in George Floyd’s Killing Charged and Arrested
Tumblr media
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has filed charges against all four Minneapolis police officers involved in last week’s killing of George Floyd, which sparked ongoing nationwide protests. A charge of second-degree murder was added against officer Derek Chauvin, who was already facing a third-degree murder charge for kneeling on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds while Floyd pleaded for his life. The other three officers present were charged with aiding and abetting the murder. Chauvin was arrested last week. The other three officers — Thomas Lane, Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao — are now in custody. Keith Ellison, Minnesota’s first African American attorney general, announced the charges on Wednesday afternoon.
Attorney General Keith Ellison: “Let me be honest here. I mean, our country has had — has underprosecuted these matters, in Minnesota and throughout the country. And so I think the trust is a result of historically not holding people who are public guardians accountable for their behavior in situations where we should have.”
A memorial service will be held today for George Floyd in Minneapolis. On Wednesday, his son Quincy Mason Floyd welcomed the charges against the officers.
Quincy Mason Floyd: “I am happy that all the officers have been arrested. My father should not have been killed like this. We deserve justice. That’s all I have to say.”
200+ New York Mayoral Staffers Demand “Radical Change,” Police Budget Cuts
Tumblr media
Mayor Bill de Blasio holds a media availability at New York City Hall on Wednesday, June 3. (Ed Reed/Mayoral Photography Office)
Two-hundred thirty-six current and former staffers for Mayor de Blasio signed an open letter calling on him to live up to the promises of reform that initially drew them to work for him. Read about the effort here. Below is the full text of the document:
An Open Letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio
We are former and current de Blasio Administration staffers.
We came to the Mayor’s Office from different places and walks of life, but we all shared a common goal: to work for a fairer, more just New York City.
None of us joined the de Blasio Administration believing this mayor would be radical on criminal justice policy. That was apparent from the moment he hired Bill Bratton to be his police commissioner. But we saw in Bill de Blasio a chance for real change.
He made his opposition to “Stop and Frisk” a pillar of his run for the mayoralty. He spoke passionately about his duty as a parent to make New York City safer for his Black son and daughter. He called for cuts to the City’s jail population, and for the closure of Rikers Island.
It was our hope that these words were a starting place. That we could push the Administration further to reform New York City’s racist criminal legal system. That together we could create real, lasting change for a City and police department that have failed Black and brown New Yorkers, generation after generation.
Our time in the Mayor’s Office showed us that the change we had hoped for, and fought for, might never come.
We saw up close the Administration’s unwillingness to challenge the abuses of the NYPD—the Mayor’s refusal to fire Daniel Pantaleo for choking the life out of Eric Garner, the continuation of the failed “Broken Windows” policing strategy that criminalizes our Black and brown communities, the rejection of even basic accountability measures like making information public about police officers accused of misconduct.
We saw how, while crime rates are at record lows, the Administration has continued to pour money into the NYPD budget—which is now almost $1 billion larger than when de Blasio took office—heightening the over-policing of Black and brown communities.
We saw how the Mayor refused to end the use of solitary confinement, which took the lives of New Yorkers like Kalief Browder and Layleen Polanco, in the City’s jails.
We saw the aggressive push for the construction of new borough-based jails, at a cost of $9 billion, despite activists’ cries to invest that money in jobs and alternatives to incarceration.
The chasm between Mayor de Blasio’s promise to reform the criminal legal system and the actions of his Administration has only widened in the past year.
De Blasio expanded the City’s cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which wages war on our immigrant communities.
He joined with police and prosecutors as they demonized the progressive bail and discovery reforms that activists and advocates spent years lobbying for in Albany.
He sat by as thousands of our fellow New Yorkers remained locked in cages on Rikers Island, while a deadly virus raged inside its jails.
And these past long days, as New Yorkers have taken to the streets demanding an end to the racist policing that humiliates, maims, and kills Black New Yorkers, he stood with the very police who perpetrate that violence.
Many of us marched at these protests. We’ve all seen the images and read the stories. Crowds of cops swarming over a single protestor, raining down blows with their batons. Protestors rammed with police cars. A rampaging cop throwing a protester to the curb, sending her to the hospital with seizures. A cop drawing his gun and pointing it into a crowd. A cop macing a defenseless young man with his hands in the air. Cops covering their badges so they could act with utter impunity.
What was the Mayor’s response? He said that the NYPD had “acted appropriately.” That police had “shown a lot of restraint.” That he “was not going to blame” officers who were trying to deal with an “impossible situation.”
And while the Mayor did attempt to walk back some of his comments on Sunday morning, by Tuesday he had implemented an 8:00 PM citywide curfew, an unprecedented attempt to silence New Yorkers’ cries for justice.
We have joined together in writing this letter because we could not remain silent while the Administration we served allows the NYPD to turn our City into an occupied territory. Our former boss might not hear the cries for justice from Black and brown New Yorkers, but we do.
We are demanding radical change from the Mayor, who is on the brink of losing all legitimacy in the eyes of New Yorkers.
1. Reduce the NYPD operating budget by $1 billion in Fiscal Year 2021, and reallocate that money to essential social services, including housing support and rental relief, food assistance, and health care, in alignment with the demands of the NYC Budget Justice campaign.
2. Immediately fire all NYPD officers found to have used excessive force—or to have covered their badges—at protests.
3. Release the names and official disciplinary records of all NYPD personnel who have been accused of using excessive force, covering their badge numbers, or other misconduct.
4. Appoint an independent commission, in the vein of the Knapp and Mollen Commissions, composed of civil rights attorneys, journalists, and activists, including abolitionist organizers, to investigate the response of the Mayor’s Office and the NYPD to the May and June 2020 protests against police violence.
We are also calling upon all former and current staffers of conscience to stand with us in our call for change.
We all chose to serve for a better New York. Stand with us now and demand justice—for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery. For Eric and Erica Garner. And for all Black and brown New Yorkers.
Signed,

Because we can’t have nice things, “#HetersexualPrideDay” is currently the top trending topic on Twitter.
Thankfully, when you take the time to scroll through the tag, most tweets are there to lambast the concept and explain why heterosexuals don’t need a Pride day. If you’re heterosexual and proud of it, go you, but no one is trying to take that pride away from you. No one is trying to convert you, jail you, ban you from activities like marriage to the person of your choice. You are not estranged from your family because as a result of your heterosexuality. You did not have to come out to anyone because your identity is considered the norm.
As the assumed “default” sexuality and accepted worldwide, heterosexuals haven’t struggled against hatred, fear, violence, and repression because of their sexuality. Every day is goddamned heterosexual pride day. Let the LBGTQIA community have June as Pride Month, which was hard-fought for. Let them have this one month. Expressing pride in you non-heterosexual sexuality can still be a death sentence in many places today around the world. STFU with Heterosexual Pride Day.
I’m reminded of people who yell about All Lives Matter, incapable of getting the point that all lives are not treated equally in this country. I’m reminded of the men who just could not handle the concept of a handful of women-only Wonder Woman screenings, who didn’t feel it appropriate or “fair” that females could dare choose to celebrate the first female-led superhero movie without them. For the love of God, people in positions of power and privilege, just let others have the things that, for ONCE, are not about you. It’s not about excluding you. It’s about calling attention to groups that are historically and still marginalized. Learn the difference.
Persecution complexes are reaffirming to those who benefit from unearned privileges. #HeterosexualPrideDay #trump #theresistance #iqrtg

The responses on Twitter are spot-on, searing, and sometimes funny as hell. Not that I expect many people of the heterosexual pride persuasion to absorb their message. (However, the only pro-Heterosexual Pride Day tweets I’ve seen so far are from obvious troll accounts and accounts with “Red Pill” in their name.)

Cover: The Kennedy family torn apart
Tumblr media
Page 2: Angry and isolated Caitlyn Jenner is on a downward emotional spiral that some friends believe have left her one step from the psycho ward -- she feels shunned by her own family and can’t find romance and is unhappy with with her looks -- Caitlyn is so tense and insecure and sensitive about everything so she’s diving into more and more prospective projects in a desperate effort to kickstart her flagging career and she’s flying off the handle all the time plus she’s tried to drown her sorrows in a new round of cosmetic improvements including a face-lift and lipo to trim her waist and thighs but she’s horrified she’s still not happy with her looks after all her surgeries
Page 3: Lovestruck Halle Berry has leapt headfirst into a red-hot romance with Van Hunt but the singer is a skirt-chasing cheat -- Van and his ex-wife split in 2007 after she said he abandoned her and their only child to move to L.A. and she claimed the musician admitted adultery shortly before divorce documents were filed -- Halle would be disturbed to hear that Van walked out on his son because she’s a very family-oriented person and she could never imagine living on the other side of the country to her kids -- Van’s grown and matured since the divorce and is sure to have shared all about his situation with Halle and he’s said to be on good terms with his ex-wife but people say once a cheater always a cheater and that’s got to be at the back of Halle’s mind
Page 4: Runaway Prince Harry is reeling after being publicly snubbed by his royal relatives and now he is having second thoughts about ditching his official duties for a glam life in Hollywood; he’s finally realizing just what he gave up when he left England with wife Meghan Markle and their son Archie and he’s wondering if it was worth it -- the simmering rift between Harry and the royals exploded after they refused his request to be part of Britain’s Remembrance Day ceremonies to honor fallen soldiers so Harry retaliated by staging a photo op at Los Angeles National Cemetery with Meghan with his military medals pinned on his navy suit; Harry was banned from wearing his military uniform when he quit royal duties and he also had to give up his military duties which devastated him -- photos from the cemetery released by the couple triggered an immediate backlash and they were accused of being shameless publicity-seekers trying to steal headlines and overshadow the royals doing their duty back home; it was a disaster and Harry was shocked -- he’s reaching out to the palace to make amends but calls to his brother Prince William and father Prince Charles have gone unanswered
* Katie Holmes and Emilio Vitolo Jr.’s hot new romance is in a pressure cooker as their families fight to claim the couple as their guests for the holidays -- things were going great for them but this tug-of-war may tear them apart because Emilio’s folks told him they want him home with them but Katie is desperate to spend Christmas with her relatives in Ohio and they really want to meet her new boyfriend and Katie is feeling guilty because she spends so much time with Emilio’s clan at his dad’s Manhattan eatery so she thinks it’s only fair that he does this for her but Emilio’s never missed a holiday gathering with his own family and there are a lot of them he hasn’t seen because of the pandemic
Page 5: Celine Dion is finally ready to put the past behind her as the fifth anniversary of her beloved husband’s death approaches in January and she is planning to leave Las Vegas with their sons and she is pining to return to her native Quebec and give twins Nelson and Eddy and 19-year-old Rene-Charles a taste of her own childhood -- Celine had been careful to not upset her kids’ lives since the death of their dad from throat cancer but she now believes the boys would benefit from spending time in The Great White North -- she also thinks it might be more likely she’ll find lasting love in her home country
Page 6: Defiantly plump Lizzo has ditched her diet and frightened friends are staging an intervention to get her to a fat farm to save her life -- Lizzo had committed to eating vegan after weighing in at 350 pounds but once on vacation it lasted like two days before she couldn’t take it any longer -- she has anxiety issues and uses food to comfort herself but the stress the weight is putting on her heart and other organs could have a detrimental effect on her health and cut her life short
Page 7: Mark Harmon and Pauley Perrette have agreed to meet for peace talks after a long-simmering feud triggered her angry departure from NCIS and Mark reached out to her to invite her back -- Mark feels bad about how Pauley left the show and knows she played a big role in its success and he’s anxious to set things right between them and bring back one of the show’s favorite all-time characters for fans -- Mark also feels he’s been painted unfairly in Pauley’s departure and would like to know he was not behind it but the two clashed for years with Pauley charging Mark’s bullying caused her to quit the show and Pauley even tweeted she is terrified of Harmon and him attacking her -- while Pauley is not saying yes or no to returning to the show she’s definitely willing to sit down and talk
* The drama between sickly Phil Collins and his squatting ex-wife Orianne Cevey is really getting down and dirty with Orianne charging that Phil degenerated into a pill-popping addict who stopped showering and brushing his teeth and was impotent and she also claimed Phil became emotionally and verbally abusive and refused to provide emotional support or love or care for her -- Phil’s lawyers said Orianne’s charges are scandalous and scurrilous and unethical and for the most part patently false or grossly exaggerated

#Timeless S1, Ep. 14-15 "The Lost Generation"/"Public Enemy No. 1" Recap/Review
"The Lost Generation"
"The Lost Generation" is another amazing episode and story builder as we reach the last couple of episodes of the season.
With Wyatt arrested and taken to a secret undercover blacksite, Lucy and Rufus still has to deal with Flynn as he travels back to Paris 1927 the day that Charles Lindbergh completed his trans-Atlantic flight, in this case almost did.
During this episode, Lucy gets a little understanding of what her dad tells her about Rittenhouse, that it's not only a legacy, it's in her blood. She threatens to take down it but he doesn't believe that she would, hell he even said that he said and did at the time he learned about Rittenhouse.
Just before the mission, Rufus learns about Lucy's dad, gets a bit upset, but they move on to the next mission along with a new solider ( I rather call it a new companion), Bam Bam (as Wyatt calls him). They go back sees that Flynn has been around and tat Lindbergh had crashed his plane. As they got word they bump into another famous face, Ernest Hemingway at the time a journalist and author of one book. I don't know about you, but I would probably enjoy having Hemingway as a life coach after this episode.
Another famous face was Josephine Baker, back then she was the Beyonce at that time which was the best description. They asked for her help in finding Lindbergh and soon later Bam Bam spotted Emma with Flynn's hitch-man along. Soon they followed them outside where then gunfire was exchange, hitting Bam Bam and dying.
Lucy, Rufus and Hemingway search for Lindbergh, they come to an abandoned house, as Hemingway asked for help (he was about to punk), Lucy looks around by herself and gets caught and taken to Flynn. There Flynn and Lucy talk: about Rittenhouse, her father and of course, Lindbergh. Lindbergh is one of Rittenhouse and Flynn wants some answers and Lucy offered a deal if she can get him to talk about them in exchange for his safety. Flynn agrees and hears the name Cheviot, as one of the members and soon went to meet him to have a chat about Rittenhouse.
Rufus and Hemingway had some nice scene together one of them Hemingway trying to spark up Rufus that got him motivated and found both Lucy and Lindbergh. But on their way out Emma was there and after Rufus gave her the option to either come along or let them through and not get shot; she let them through.
Meanwhile, while all of this was happening, Agent Christopher gets word that she is no long in command that the NSA has taken over. She goes to Wyatt about it and discuss why there are over a dozen of people just like that to come in and take over. It all made sense when it all connects to Rittenhouse. Christopher offers him a deal but Wyatt denies it but after she left, she leaves him with a paperclip to escape, which he did and soon meet with her, Lucy and Rufus back at their secret location (Warehouse).
Just before the episode ended, Lucy talks with her mom about meeting her dad. She tells Lucy that she wouldn't have anything different knowing what a fine woman she has turned out, but also gives her a gift something to express her feelings when she's upset about something: which happens to be the journal that Flynn has been holding and getting his information.
I enjoyed this episode so much. The writing was strong and the cast from Spencer, Barrett and even Brandon Barash as Hemingway was amazing and so much fun to watch. Even Wersching was good and she only had a couple of scenes in the episode. As I said before I loved that scene with Rufus and Hemingway talk about fighting the good fight. It really made me want to do something bold that I never done before. Overall, I give this episode a 8.5/10.
   "Public Enemy No. 1"
The team is reunited and it just feels so so good (even though it was only about an episode since Wyatt left).
"Public Enemy No. 1" not only brings the team back together again, but gives us one hell of a cliffhanger that'll dive right into the season finale, that I'm sure we're all looking forward to.
With no success on capturing Flynn, Agent Neville orders Rufus and Lucy to go back to 1963 and take out Flynn's mother and this time they have no choice otherwise. So as they take off with another solider (terminator look-alike), they make and took out or knock out their solider companion, headed back to present day to meet with Wyatt and Christopher. There we learn that Rufus placed a temporary virus to the computer's mainframe back at the post so Mason and Rittenhouse couldn't find them.
Now, with a stolen time machine and not working with Rittenhouse, Wyatt suggested that they should go and save Lucy's sister. But as soon as they get ready to do so, Rufus gets word that Flynn jumped to 1931. Lucy doesn't want to go after Flynn but Wyatt tells her that they should take one problem at a time, stop Flynn from whatever he's doing and then go save her sister.
There Flynn meets with Al Capone and informs him about he would be put in jail on tax evasion. After the charges being dropped by the court, Capone grants Flynn with a favor: to meet with the mayor and ask about the Rittenhouse meeting.
After seeing Capone gone with Flynn, Lucy and gang heads to the one person that can stop Capone, Eliot Ness, who isn't happy. They talk at his place about Flynn and Capone and just before they plan to do something, Capone had a guy come and shoot the place up, killing Ness. So the one person now that Lucy and the gang can go to is the one person that knows Capone...his brother.
Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus meets with Richard Hart and asked him for help to take down his brother. After some convincing, they headed over there and it was a family reunion until it turned into an argument of betrayal after Hart tells him he's taken him in. Guns go up in the air three get shot, Capone, his hitch man and Rufus.
Lucy and Wyatt tend to Rufus, who was bleeding pretty badly. They get him up and drive back to the time machine. They get Rufus in his seat and set everything up but by the the time everything was a go, Rufus looses consciousness and we leave it there.
Other things: With Rufus' plan of diversion, Mason takes things to his own hands and place Jiya in holding after she had made contact with Rufus on a burner phone. As Mason tries to get things back up and spotted where Rufus is at, Jiya builds her own computer and takes out the system again. IT's the first time I've enjoyed watching Jiya this season. Also, Flynn gets word from Chicago Mayor William Hale Thompson about the next Rittenhouse meeting would be in 1954, for which that's where he'll be in the season finale.
This was just another amazing episode that had fun moments like Wyatt telling Rufus and Lucy to leave Ness' dead body behind because they didn't have no IDs and he's wearing button-fly jeans from the GAP. Trilling when Jiya and Mason butted heads, that gave me a coupe of chills. The writing was amazing once again and so was the acting from Spencer, Lanter, Barrett and even Goran Visnjic, who had an amazing first open scene at a church and talking to the priest about life and the possibilities to change it if it all matters in the end. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
You can catch the season finale of Timeless tonight at 10/9c on NBC.

Resistance, Repression, and Media Lies in Philadelphia: Reportback from the Black Resistance March, 2/17/17
Donald Trump has taken to his soapbox to carp about “fake news,” as if the corporate news media were a subversive force. On the contrary, while biased or outright dishonest reporting is the rule rather than the exception, it almost always serves those in power. The interests of the corporate news media cannot be disentangled from the advertisers who fund them and the authorities they count on for scoops. In this eyewitness report from a demonstration in Philadelphia last Friday, participants relate how police attacked them with batons and pepper spray, then persuaded local media to report that it was the demonstrators who pepper-sprayed them.
Last night in North Philadelphia, four people were arrested and many were injured by batons and mace during a march organized by a local militant Black Lives Matter group, Philly Coalition for REAL Justice. The flier described it as a “Black Resistance March.” The online description expanded on this:
> "All are welcome as long as they make space for black people at the front of the march. The issues contained in the assaults on LGBT folks, on Muslims and refugees, occupation and militarization abroad are intersectional. Today we center our black women, our black immigrants, black LGBTQ family, and our black Muslims. Dress warm and be vigilant."
The march kicked off with a line of Bodyhammer-style shields made from large city traffic cones. Each one had a letter painted on it so that together they read “U-N-G-O-V-E-R-N-A-B-L-E.” Even the protest chants had an air of militancy. “Bullets Trump Hate” resonated throughout the streets as the march headed north on Broad Street. One person with a megaphone paid homage to the words that became a rallying cry after police officers murdered Eric Garner. “They say ‘hands up, don’t shoot,’ but we have another one for you… ‘guns up, shoot back.’”
The march made its way north towards the Temple campus. We stopped at the bustling intersection of Broad and Girard, a main artery for traffic and public transit. The crowd blocked the streets and burned American flags while people of color talked about police repression and terrorism through a megaphone. “This is not my flag. It has never been my flag. We’re burning this flag for Emmit Till. Trayvon Martin. Michael Brown. Freddie Gray. This is for Brandon Tate Brown.” There was more talk about the current racist stop-and-frisk policy, and, of course, the MOVE bombing of May 13, 1985. The list went on while the fire grew.
After it began to burn out, the march started to move again. The group wasn’t half as large as some anti-Trump demonstrations that brought out thousands only a few weeks ago. In a fashion typical of Philadelphia Police, the march was followed by dozens of squad cars and at least two police helicopters, and surrounded on either side by bike cops who seemed to outnumber participants by at least two to one. The strategy for policing mass mobilizations in Philadelphia is heavily influenced by former Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey; usually, the police avoid making arrests, while oversaturating the area with officers. This approach is informed by the “Vancouver Model” as outlined in the police manual Managing Major Events: Best Practices from the Field by the Police Executive Research Forum.
As soon as we neared Temple University, the march became confrontational. Those with megaphones tried to rush into the campus dining hall. Uniformed officers tripped over each other as they hurried to block the entrance and exits, using their bikes to shove people who stood in their way. They formed a line in front of the doors with their bikes as blockades.
Someone noticed a Bank of America across the street and everyone rushed in that direction. Only one officer stood guard before all the shielded protestors formed their own line at the entrance. Bike cops rushed over, clumsily tripping over each other again as they scrambled to catch up with the crowd. A scuffle broke out. Someone threw black paint over the bank window and perhaps an officer or two. Cops extended their batons. Shielded protesters stood their ground and moved forward, chanting “Kill the Rich.” Police pepper-sprayed a large portion of the crowd, then began swinging their batons and hitting many people. Four arrests took place. There was an unsuccessful attempt to de-arrest someone. I saw at least one person bleeding from the head after being hit by police. Street medics took care to help flush the pepper spray out of the eyes of those struck.
All the local news media outlets that covered this event reported that protestors pepper-sprayed the police and that police were hospitalized with injuries. No one I spoke with has witnessed anything other than the police pepper-spraying protestors. One person’s account is as follows: “Here's what happened. We wanted to get inside Bank of America. A bunch of cops started beating people up with bikes and batons because they care more about capitalist institutions than people. One of them started spraying us with pepper spray. I got it in my eyes. The cops started shouting to their own guy, "Who's spraying? Stop spraying!" Now, in order to cover up their incompetence, the press is implying that we were the ones who injured them.”
Six more people were arrested outside the precinct the next day while doing jail support. It took over 24 hours before everyone was released. The Up Against the Law Legal Collective worked nonstop to find out where everyone was being held and when they would be eligible for bail, while the local Food Not Bombs chapter fed the gathering crowd of people expressing support outside the jail. The charges being filed against the arrestees are outlandish, but we plan to fight the system with solidarity.
The courts and the police want us to feel scared and isolated. As long as we have each other’s backs in the mounting resistance to come, we can win. And we will win.

These are the Deutsche Bank Executives Responsible for Serving Jeffrey Epstein
Deutsche Bank is not legally obligated to name those responsible for the its relationship with the client Jeffrey Epstein, whom 40 underage girls reported for sexual assault, resulting in a bank fine of $150 million. Large companies often agree to pay a big fine as long as senior managers are protected. If you were DB’s CEO would you: (1) name the executives involved in managing Epstein and take accountability for their actions or (2) refuse to name them? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
Jeffrey Epstein, the sex criminal and financier, didn’t act alone. Now we know in vivid detail who some of his financial enablers were: executives and bankers at Deutsche Bank.
Last week the New York Department of Financial Services laid bare at least some of the financial underpinnings of Mr. Epstein’s sophisticated enterprise. Deutsche Bank agreed to pay a $150 million fine for its dealings with Mr. Epstein, who committed suicide last August, and for two other matters.
Mr. Epstein’s bankers “created the very real risk” that payments through the bank “could be used to further or cover up criminal activity and perhaps even to endanger more young women,” the department asserted.
Deutsche Bank executives approved Mr. Epstein as a client in 2013 and then kept working with him, even though employees worried about the fact that “40 underage girls had come forward with testimony of Epstein sexually assaulting them,” as the bank put it in internal communications about Mr. Epstein in early 2015.
And even though such high-risk clients are required to be carefully monitored to detect and prevent illegal activity, once Mr. Epstein was a client, “very few problematic transactions were ever questioned, and even when they were, they were usually cleared without satisfactory explanation,” the New York regulator concluded.
Deutsche Bank itself is a corporation, and, as has often been said, it’s people, not corporations, who do bad things. Responsibility for working with Mr. Epstein permeated the ranks of the private-banking division that caters to wealthy clients.
Yet Deutsche Bank declined to publicly identify any individuals involved — and the authorities didn’t demand it. The so-called consent order with the New York agency included no names of the bankers or executives who were implicated; instead, the document is littered with references like RELATIONSHIP MANAGER-1 and EXECUTIVE-2. A bank spokesman, Daniel Hunter, said the bank meted out appropriate punishments to employees who were still at the bank, but declined to name anyone.
Based on descriptions of the employees in the consent order and interviews with current and former Deutsche Bank officials, The New York Times was able to identify nearly every person anonymously described in the order. At least one high-ranking executive remains in her position: Jan Ford, the bank’s head of compliance in the Americas.
It is rare for companies and regulators that are settling allegations of crimes or other misconduct to name the individuals responsible for those misdeeds — a practice that perpetuates the myth that such acts were inadvertently committed by a faceless institution and were not the consequence of decisions made by human beings.
Large companies “will happily pay a big fine as long as senior managers are protected,” said John Coffee Jr., a Columbia Law School professor and author of the forthcoming book “Corporate Crime and Punishment: The Crisis of Underenforcement.”
Fines paid by public companies, even of the $150 million magnitude Deutsche Bank is paying, fall almost entirely on shareholders rather than the individuals responsible. When those individuals bear no discernible consequences, the result is an astonishing rate of recidivism, Mr. Coffee noted, despite repeated apologies and promises that bad behavior won’t happen again.
New York’s Department of Financial Services, not Deutsche Bank, wrote the consent order that omitted the executives’ and bankers’ names. “The New York State Department of Financial Services is the first and only financial regulator to take action against a financial institution in connection with Jeffrey Epstein,” said a spokeswoman for the agency, Sophia Kim. “The department’s consent order provides a wealth of detail about the course of conduct of the bank, consistent with D.F.S.’s role as the New York licensing agency for the institution itself.”
While the bank may not be legally obligated to name those responsible for the Epstein relationship, it should do so to rebuild public trust, said Brandon Garrett, a professor at Duke Law School and author of “Too Big to Jail.” “When a company does something seriously wrong, then accountability is all the more important,” Mr. Garrett said. “You want assurances they’re cleaning house. That’s especially true for Deutsche Bank, which has been around this block many times.”
Indeed, Deutsche Bank is a symbol of corporate recidivism: It has paid more than $9 billion in fines since 2008 related to a litany of alleged and admitted financial crimes and other transgressions, including manipulating interest rates, failing to prevent money laundering, evading sanctions on Iran and other countries and engaging in fraud in the run-up to the financial crisis.
Deutsche Bank claimed to have put all this behind it when it named Christian Sewing as chief executive in 2018. “We all have to help ensure that this kind of thing does not happen again. It is our duty and our social responsibility to ensure that our banking services are used only for legitimate purposes,” Mr. Sewing said last week in a message to employees.
Since neither the regulator nor the bank would reveal the people responsible for the misconduct, my colleagues and I decided to fill in some of the blanks left by the consent order. (Some of the bankers and executives confirmed their roles; none would comment on the record.)
“RELATIONSHIP MANAGER-1,” who brought Mr. Epstein into Deutsche Bank, is Paul Morris, who had previously helped manage the Epstein account at JPMorgan. Despite Mr. Epstein’s conviction in 2008 of soliciting prostitution from a minor and widespread press coverage of his involvement with underage girls, Mr. Morris in 2013 introduced Mr. Epstein to his Deutsche Bank bosses as “a potential client who could generate millions of dollars of revenue as well as leads for other lucrative clients to the bank,” according to the consent order.
In a subsequent email to higher-ups at the bank, Mr. Morris noted that the Epstein relationship could generate annual revenues of up to $4 million.
Mr. Morris needed approval for a client who carried such reputational risk. He sent Charles Packard, the head of the bank’s American wealth-management division and described in the consent order as “EXECUTIVE-1,” a memo detailing Mr. Epstein’s controversial past. In a subsequent email, Mr. Packard said that he had taken the issue to the division’s general counsel and the head of its anti-money-laundering operation and that neither felt Mr. Epstein required additional review. “We can move ahead so long as nothing further is identified,” Mr. Packard wrote in a May 2013 email to Mr. Morris.
(Deutsche Bank told regulators that it found no written record of any approval from the executives Mr. Packard said he consulted.)
At the time, Deutsche Bank was aggressively expanding its U.S. wealth management business under its new co-chief executive, Anshu Jain. The bank developed a reputation for courting wealthy clients who other banks shunned — including a default-prone real estate developer named Donald J. Trump.
Once the Epstein relationship was underway, Deutsche Bank executives ignored repeated red flags, including suspiciously large cash withdrawals and 120 wire transfers totaling $2.65 million to women with Eastern European surnames and people who had been publicly identified as Mr. Epstein’s co-conspirators, according to the consent order.
That and other activity — including media accounts of Mr. Epstein’s sexual misconduct — led employees in the bank’s anti-financial-crime department to urge executives to further scrutinize the Epstein relationship.
Mr. Morris and Mr. Packard met with Mr. Epstein at his East 71st Street mansion in January 2015 and asked him “about the veracity of the recent allegations,” according to the consent order. No one took notes; the bank told regulators it had no record of the substance of the meeting.
Whatever Mr. Epstein said, Mr. Packard “appeared to be satisfied,” according to the consent order. No one subsequently asked Mr. Morris for his opinion. Deutsche Bank apparently didn’t further investigate the allegations against Mr. Epstein.
Eight days after the visit to Mr. Epstein’s mansion, a bank committee charged with vetting transactions that pose risks to the bank’s reputation held a meeting. According to a bank official familiar with the meeting, it was chaired by Stuart Clarke, chief operating officer for the Americas; other attendees included Michael Chepiga, acting general counsel for the Americas; and Ms. Ford, the compliance executive who had joined the bank just one week earlier.
The committee concluded that it was “comfortable with things continuing” with Mr. Epstein, according to an email that a committee member sent Mr. Packard. One committee member “noted a number of sizable deals recently,” according to the consent order. In other words, the relationship was making money for Deutsche Bank.
The following week Ms. Ford, the head of compliance, memorialized the decision in an email to Mr. Packard and other executives that put the onus squarely on Mr. Packard: Deutsche Bank would “continue business as usual with Jeff Epstein based upon” Mr. Packard’s “due diligence visit with him.” Ms. Ford also imposed some conditions on the relationship, but Mr. Packard and others “inexplicably” failed to convey those conditions to all of those who regularly dealt with Mr. Epstein. The bankers “continued conducting business with Epstein in the same manner as they had,” the consent order said.
Only after The Miami Herald revealed in November 2018 the extent of Mr. Epstein’s sexual misconduct and lenient plea deal did Deutsche Bank begin to wind down its relationship with Mr. Epstein. Even then, a bank executive wrote letters to two other financial institutions essentially vouching for Mr. Epstein.
By then Mr. Morris and Mr. Packard had both left the bank. Mr. Morris went to Merrill Lynch, where he’s a private wealth adviser. Mr. Packard joined Bridgewater Associates, the hedge fund founded by Ray Dalio.
Of the members of the risk-assessment committee who approved continuing the Epstein relationship, Mr. Clarke and Mr. Chepiga have both left the bank. Only Ms. Ford remains.
The bank’s Mr. Hunter declined to comment on her behalf. “Deutsche Bank undertook appropriate disciplinary actions based upon its findings regarding the underlying conduct, including termination for some employees,” Mr. Hunter said. “We do not comment on individual instances of employee discipline.”

Notorious (2009)
Biography, Crime, Drama |
Notorious is a American biographical drama film directed by George Tillman Jr. about American rapper Christopher Wallace / The Notorious B.I.G., following his life and murder. The film stars Jamal Woolard as Wallace, alongside Angela Bassett, Derek Luke, and Anthony Mackie. Woolard reprised his role as Wallace in All Eyez on Me (2017).
The film opens at a party in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997. Just as The Notorious B.I.G. is about to be killed in a shooting, the film flashes back to Biggie’s childhood in Brooklyn, New York, where he lived during his childhood years as a hard-working school student before he begins dealing drugs. Christopher, now older, sells drugs at the height of the crack epidemic, hustling with his friends “D-Roc” and Lil’ Cease.
When his girlfriend, Jan Jackson, tells him that she is pregnant, he takes drug dealing more seriously so he can earn more money to support his growing family. Christopher eventually participates in a rap battle, where he wins, but his mother, Voletta Wallace, kicks him out of the house after finding drugs underneath his bed and also because of the fact letters were sent home about him not attending school.
Chris gets caught with guns and drugs, and he serves nine months in jail before being bailed out. Christopher meets Kim Jones, but Kim refuses to pursue a relationship with him due to her abusive past. After reconciling with his mother and visiting his newborn daughter, T’yanna, he records a demo under the name “Biggie Smalls”, which catches the attention of Puff, an ambitious record producer working for Uptown.

Bianca Devins’ Killer Is Dealing with A Life Sentence, Says Utica D.A. – Hollywood Life
http://tinyurl.com/y4d9cmo5 Social media star Bianca Devins was brutally murdered on July 14. And now, the person who’s been charged with the crime (her presumed boyfriend) is dealing with life behind bars, in keeping with the Utica D.A. Bianca Devins’ life was lower quick on July 14, and following her horrific loss of life at 17, police arrested Brandon Andrew Clark, 21, whom they imagine was her boyfriend. Police suspect Brandon slit the throat of the popular Instagram user and have since charged him with second diploma homicide. Now, the Utica District Legal professional Scott McNamara tells HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY that the suspected assassin may probably spend the remainder of his life behind bars. “In NY State, our typical homicide is taken into account homicide within the 2nd diploma. Homicide in 1st diploma used to imply the loss of life penalty however that was deemed unconstitutional so now the punishment for homicide 1 is life with out parole. However to be thought of a 1st diploma homicide the crime has to have very particular aggravating components. For instance the homicide of a police officer qualifies as 1st diploma. This case doesn’t have any of the annoying components so it falls underneath homicide in 2nd diploma and the punishment for that’s 25 years to life. So, if he will get the utmost punishment he must serve 25 years in state jail after which be eligible for parole each two years after that. The minimal sentence for homicide 2 is 15 yr to life. After 15 years he’d be eligible for parole. He may serve the remainder of his life in jail although, if the parole denies him launch. You could recall that Charles Manson saved getting turned down by the parole board, so he spent the remainder of his life in jail,” Scott tells us. The twisted crime was made all of the extra ugly as a result of images of Bianca’s useless physique began circulating on social media after Brandon seemingly posted them. In keeping with the the Utica D.A., these social media posts will probably be used as proof within the case. “I anticipate we’ll use the social media posting as a part of the proof that we are going to put forth,” Scott tells us. “We are going to current all of the proof that we predict is compelling that proves to the courtroom that we will maintain him with out bail.” In a closing act of violence, Brandon slit his personal throat when police surrounded him in his automotive, previous to his arrest. He survived, however needed to have surgical procedure and remains to be within the hospital, however in keeping with Scott, he’ll quickly be in county jail. “He’s awake and he can speak and at this level he’s being handled for the self inflicted accidents to his neck. We anticipate within the subsequent few days he will probably be launched from the hospital and transferred to the county jail the place he will probably be held with out bail. Inside six days we could have the felony listening to and the subsequent step after that’s the grand jury. In some unspecified time in the future within the case we’ll go to the grand jury and it will likely be sooner fairly than later. We now have to go inside the first 45 days so it’s all going to occur pretty shortly. We’re already placing the case collectively for the grand jury.” After Bianca’s loss of life, her household launched the next assertion to HollywoodLife: “We’re very grateful for the outpouring of affection and sympathy now we have obtained from our Mates, Household, Bianca’s Mates and the entire neighborhood. Your prayers assist to strengthen us by way of this tough time. Bianca, age 17, was a gifted artist, a loving sister, daughter, and cousin, and an exquisite younger woman, taken from us all too quickly. She is now trying down on us, as she joins her cat, Belle, in heaven. Bianca’s smile brightened our lives. She’s going to at all times be remembered as our Princess. Bianca graduated from T. R. Proctor Excessive Faculty this previous June and was trying ahead to attending MVCC within the fall.” Source link

Democratic strategist launches new firm
With David Beavers, Garrett Ross and Daniel Lippman
FIRST IN PI — DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST LAUNCHES NEW FIRM: Brandon Neal, who was political director for the Democratic National Committee and director of the Transportation Department’s small business office under former President Barack Obama, will launch his own fundraising, political strategy and lobbying firm Tuesday. Neal was most recently a senior adviser and national political director for Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.).
Story Continued Below
— In an interview with PI, Neal said that the firm, Pylorus Strategies, will focus on political strategy and planning for candidates running for Congress. “Now is the time, now is the space and opportunity,” he told PI. “You don’t see a lot of African-American firms focused on political fundraising and strategy.” Neal plans to work with various arms of the Democratic Party, as well as with celebrities interested in getting involved in the political process. He will also assist small businesses competing for federal contracts and work on transportation, infrastructure, labor workforce development, and small business and economic development issues for clients. He plans to register as a lobbyist.
— So far, Neal’s clients include two members of Congress, an IT firm and a small business providing professional services to the DoD. He is also in talks to work on political strategy and fundraising for House candidates Antonio Delgado, who is running to represent New York’s 19th congressional district, Lauren Underwood, who is running to represent Illinois’ 14th congressional district, and Mary Scanlon, who is running to represent Pennsylvania’s 5th congressional district. He plans to eventually make the firm bipartisan and bring on a partner with experience fundraising for Republicans.
Good afternoon, and welcome to PI. Did you spend the weekend relaxing on the Eastern Shore with a cold drink and a good book? Just remember there are younger, better-looking lobbyists who work weekends nipping at your heels. Send us your tips: [email protected] and [email protected]. THE LATEST ON MANAFORT’S TRIAL: Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team filed a motion this morning pushing back against a request from Paul Manafort’s lawyers to exclude more than 50 pieces of evidence from the jury during Manafort’s trial, which is set to start on Tuesday. Mueller’s team argues the exhibits are necessary “to prove the source and amount of Manafort’s income.” (Manafort is facing trial on bank fraud and tax charges in federal court in Alexandria. He’s set to go on trial a second time in federal court in Washington in September on other charges, including violating foreign lobbying law.)
— The motion filed this morning provides a good summary of what Mueller’s seeking to do in the trial. Mueller “expects to prove that Manafort earned more than $60 million dollars from his Ukraine work during the period at issue and failed to report a significant percentage of it on his tax returns. … No ‘pay stub[s]’ or ‘paychecks’ reflect that income … rather, the invoices and bills submitted by various consultants provide proof on that issue. Accordingly, to prove that Manafort earned that much income, the government must be able to show the extent of the work that he performed for Ukraine.”
— Separately, Mueller’s team on Friday afternoon “submitted a roster of 35 witnesses the prosecution may call” during the trial set to start on Tuesday, POLITICO’s Josh Gerstein reports. “The deep dive into Manafort’s pricey tastes is expected to include testimony from a proprietor of a New York boutique where he allegedly spent more than $850,000 on high-end suits, an employee of a car dealership where Manafort’s wife bought a $130,000 Mercedes, the owner of a Florida home-theater company and a manager of season-ticket sales for the New York Yankees.” Full story.
SPEAKING OF MANAFORT: The New York Times’ Jason Horowitz is out with a story on how former journalist Alan Friedman put Manafortin jail. “Documents filed last month by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, as part of the investigation into Russia’s influence campaign in the 2016 American presidential election, showed that Mr. Friedman worked closely with Mr. Manafort in creating the so-called Hapsburg Group,” Horowitz writes. “Neither Mr. Manafort nor Mr. Friedman registered as lobbyists, a potential violation of an American law intended as a bulwark against foreign agents peddling influence in American politics. … When the group was revealed in February, Mr. Manafort desperately sought to give Mr. Friedman a ‘heads up about Hapsburg,’ Mr. Friedman’s lawyer has said. That included messages on WhatsApp saying ‘This is Paul.’ Mr. Friedman told investigators that he considered the messages an effort to ‘suborn perjury.’ A judge agreed and in June revoked Mr. Manafort’s bail for witness tampering.
—“Now Mr. Friedman, 62, has gone uncharacteristically silent on the issue even as he travels around Italy promoting his book, ‘This Is Not America,’ which begins with his 2016 interview with Donald J. Trump, then a presidential candidate. Mr. Manafort and his associate Rick Gates had a hand in arranging the interview, which was outside the usual media channels and led campaign aides to question its purpose, according to a person familiar with the issue who was granted anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.” Full story.
LAW FIRMS GIVE RAINMAKERS ACCUSED OF BAD BEHAVIOR MULTIPLE CHANCES: “Law firms stand out in a corporate landscape where rainmakers accused of bad behavior often receive second and third chances, according to interviews with dozens of lawyers, legal recruiters, consultants and leaders at some of the country’s largest firms,” the Wall Street Journal’s Sara Randazzo and Nicole Hong report. “Firms’ sole assets are lawyers and their client relationships. As demand for work from the biggest law firms has softened since the financial crisis, poaching top partners has become one of few ways to boost revenue. Many firms ask about prior complaints in new-hire questionnaires but do nothing to vet the answers, lawyers say. Firms rarely ask partners for references at their old firm, for fear of alerting competitors a star lawyer is in play.
— “Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher partner Jeffrey Reeves departed in December after an investigation into sexual-harassment allegations, the firm said. Mr. Reeves was the partner in charge of the firm’s Orange County, Calif., office in October 2015 when co-workers saw him making out with a junior associate at a Las Vegas nightclub during an office retreat, current and former Gibson lawyers said. … Mr. Reeves, who had worked at Gibson Dunn for 26 years, quickly joined litigation boutique Umberg Zipser in January. The next month he moved to a different boutique, Theodora Oringher.” Full story.
DISPATCH FROM KOCH DONOR RETREAT: “Billionaire industrialist Charles Koch extended an olive branch to Democrats during a weekend donor confab, saying Sunday that he wants to work with lawmakers regardless of party — so long as they work on issues he cares about — and admitting he has regrets about politicians his powerful network supported in the past,” POLITICO’s Maggie Severns reports. “‘I don’t care what initials are in front or after somebody’s name — I’d like there to be many more politicians who would embrace and have the courage to run on a platform’ that embraces the values he espouses, Koch told reporters when asked how he would feel about Democrats flipping the House of Representatives.
— “The Kochs’ political network has been bombarding the 2018 midterm elections with millions of dollars to help Republicans keep their seats in Congress, but the tone of the weekend was a departure from previous years, when the Kochs engineered tea party opposition to Obamacare and positioned themselves as the archnemesis of the Democratic Party. Charles Koch said he has sometimes regretted his network’s financial support for Republican lawmakers in the past and will be more careful with how he spends money going forward.” Full story.
