"COMMISSION OPENS HEARING ON INTERNED COMMUNISTS," Toronto Star. September 29, 1942. Page 3. ---- Secretary of the Communist party in Canada (LEFT), and 12 other leaders met in the law office of J. L. Cohen (RIGHT) yesterday and notified R.C.M.P. that they would surrender themselves in a group, as all have been sought for two and a half years under Defence of Canada Regulations. The head of the Communist party in Canada issued this statement: "I and my associates have decided, in the interest of national unity, to appear voluntarily before the authorities so as to appeal against the internment orders which now prevent us from giving our full energy to strengthening the country's war effort." Their cases will appear before a board of appeal in Toronto Tuesday.

"TIM BUCK SEEKS FREEDOM AS TRIBUNAL SITS IN JAIL," Toronto Star. September 29, 1942. Page 3. ---- Party Secretary and 14 Others Are Heard in Appeal Arguments === COHEN IS COUNSEL --- The special board of appeal set up to hear the case of Tim Buck, general secretary of the Communist party, and 15 other Communist leaders began sittings in Toronto Jail today. Hearings are being held in a large room where once persons were kept who couldn't pay their debts.

Years ago when it was illegal not to pay a debt, persons owing money were taken to Don jail under a warrant and were confined to the room, where the hearing was held today They had to supply their own bedding and provide their meals while they "paid off their debt."

J. L. Cohen, counsel for the men held on internment orders after their surrender last Friday, said the case of Tim Buck would be heard first. The Communist secretary, although represented at the hearing by Mr. Cohen, was expected to address the commission personally and present arguments in favor of his immediate release.

The commission consists of Judge Donald Miller of Hull, Que, Prof. Charles Cochran University of Toronto and A. S. Simpson, Winnipeg labor leader.

Mr. Cohen said he had no idea how long the hearings would last and that it depended on how wide would be their scope. Such hearings were long at one time, but recently, when he argued the cases of the Hull internees, seven were held in one day and the men's release expedited.

In Good Spirits Scheduled to start the hearing at 10 a.m.. the commissioners were late in arriving and when they got there learned that their official court reporter was ill and would not be able to attend. Mr. Cohen offered the services of his secretary if no substitute could be arranged.

As the commission arrived, Tim Buck and his associates were exercising in the jail yard. All were reported in good spirits.

Hearings will be private. Detective Dan Mann of the Toronto police special branch: Corp G.. Archer and Constables Hogg and Spriggs of the R.C.M.P., will attend. Arrangements were being made for the commission to eat a special meal in jail.

One of the commissioners said: "The minister of justice asks that there be the least possible publicity."

Mr. Cohen arrived at the jail 20 minutes before the hearing was scheduled to begin and interviewed Mr. Buck.

In the past, hearings of this type were held in a city hall courtroom, but it was reported they were ordered held in the jail by the justice department, which it is said, wanted to avoid any demonstration by public appearances of the arrested men. There was no one outside the jail as the hearings started.

Patriot Games is a more than serviceable thriller, perhaps a bit out of date when viewing it now, but still a very effective good against evil piece. The source material is so dense and intricate it was always going to be hard to condense that into a 2 hour movie, but I feel the makers manage to keep it fleshy whilst making the respective characters interesting and watchable. The acting on show is more than adequate, Harrison Ford is great in the role of Jack Ryan, he manages to portray him as a sensitive family man who can step up to the plate when things get ugly, and Anne Archer is solid enough as the wife and mother caught up in the web of nastiness unfolding. The baddies are led by the brooding Sean Bean who is a little under written, whilst Richard Harris is sadly underused. However, the action set pieces make their mark and thankfully we get a riveting...

Well, even though quarantine and lockdown may slowly open up for many of us, it’s not over yet, and besides one can never have enough means to escape reality, so here are a few book reccomendations.

All books on this list are LGBTQ or at least have (important) characters who are.

The “Classics”:

Wraeththu  - Storm Constantine (how is it no-one’s talking about this anymore? Please do take into account that those books were written in the early 1990s, they were way ahead of their times, and yet there may be some offensive things - it’s been a while that I’ve read them so I can’t come up with any example, but should you find them somewhat un-feminist, wait until the end xD)

The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin (a true classic)

The Last Herald Mage series - Mercedes Lackey (gee yes Vanyel can be a real brat - not quite without reason though, but you’ll come to love him xD And yes we all just pretend that scene in book 3 never happened -_-) (also: influenced the Nightrunner series)

The World of Riverside series - Ellen Kushner (another influence on the Nightrunner series)

The Doctrine of Labyrinths quartet - Sarah Monette (beware, those books are not for everyone, trigger warnings are in order: rape, violence, mental issues, abuse / none of this is ever glorified or belittled, but it’s there, and it is so much a part of the characters’ lifes that it might occasionally seem like it’s not appropriately treated. Speaking of characters: very complex, intriguing characters with very dark sides, but you gotta love ‘em; intricate, complex world building / Nowadays Sarah Monette writes under the pseudonym Katherine Addison) (as far as I know they are unfortunately out of print so you’d have to check second hand book stores)

Whyborne and Griffin series - Jordan L. Hawk (lots of paranormal stuff, magic, Lovecraftian creatures, awesome ladies, and so much more - and you will love those boys so much xD)

Magic in Manhattan - Allie Therin (the Roaring 20s, magic, prohibition)

The Collin Pendragon Mysteries - Gregory Harris (imagine Sherlock Holmes and Watson were canon; whodunnit, Victorian England)

Chloe Huskey, 12

Miss Chloe Reese Huskey, age 12 of North Wilkesboro, daughter of Ronnie Huskey and Alisha Adams Huskey, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020, at her home.                               Reese touched the lives of many with her infectious smile, her sincere kindness, and her incredible and courageous journey.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Fairplains Baptist Church with Pastor David Dyer officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Reese was born February 7, 2008, in Catawba County to Ronnie and Alisha Adams Huskey. She was a member of Arbor Grove United Methodist Church.  Reese was a student at Central Wilkes Middle School and attended North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro Elementary  Schools during her elementary school years.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather; Gene Adams, her paternal grandfather; Troy Huskey and an uncle; Tommy Huskey.

Reese is survived by her parents of the home, maternal grandparents; Dean and Linda  Absher of Wilkesboro and Cleo Huskey of North Wilkesboro, a sister; Reagan Adams of Charlotte, a brother; Reid Huskey of North Wilkesboro, aunts and uncles; Angel Minton and husband Jeff of Wilkesboro, Alison Thornton of Mooresville and Alison Huskey McCormick, cousins; Alex Minton, Lauren Minton, Raylan Minton, Aubree Thornton, Pierce Thornton, Cole Huskey, Alaina Grit, her special person, Deana Wyatt, and other relatives and friends who loved Reese very much.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Levine's Children's Medical Center CVICU and Sanger Pediatric Heart Institute for their excellent care provided to Reese.  A very special thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice for the incredible care and compassion provided to Reese and the entire family.  The family appreciates all of the prayers and concerns extended to them during this time.

 Eldon Gentry, 81

Mr. Eldon Gentry age 81, of Roaring River passed away Saturday February 15, 2020 at SECU Hospice Center. Mr. Gentry was born March 30, 1938 in Wilkes County, to Lonnie Spurgeon and Ruby Walters Gentry.

Eldon was a Retired farmer and a member of Benham Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mable Billings Gentry; and a brother, Bob Gentry. Survivors include: son, Eddie Gentry and wife Rhonda of Wilkesboro; brother, Raymond Gentry of Roaring River; granddaughter, Meagan Leigh Gentry of Raleigh, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service with be conducted Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Benham Baptist Church, with Rev. Keith Lyon, and Rev. Joe Souther officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 pm at Elkin Funeral Service.

  William Jennings, 51

William "Billy" Jennings, age 51, of Hays, passed away, Saturday, February 15, 2020 at his home. He was born May 29, 1968 in Portsmouth, Virginia to Roy Glenn and Onnolea Jean Johnson Jennings. Billy loved his model car collection, building and collecting hundreds of models. He loved NASCAR, the Pittsburgh Steelers and golf. He Loved and adored his family. Mr. Jennings was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Chrystal Jennings.

Surviving are his wife, Natasha Wingler Jennings; daughters, Stormy Dawn Davalos and spouse Alejandro of North Wilkesboro, Shandy Rae Miller and spouse Daniel, Kaylea Gentle all of Hays; grandchildren, Davari Davalos, Leticia Davalos, Zaiden Davalos; sisters, Angela Jennings Reed of Jefferson, Vickie Fox of Hays.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Miller Funeral Chapel with Jamie Rollyson speaking. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.  Gary Miller, 66

Gary Wayne Miller, age 66, of Millers Creek, passed away Friday, February 14, 2020 at Alleghany Health. He was born June 11, 1953 in Wilkes County to Issac Lester and Adna Ruth Miller. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta Miller; several brothers and sisters. He was of the Baptist Faith and employed with W&L Motor Lines as a truck driver.

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Billings and spouse Dwayne of Millers Creek; son, Richard Bryant and spouse Shelley of Millers Creek; brother, Lee Miller of Millers Creek; sister, Louise Beverley of Greensboro; grandchildren, Christopher Queen and spouse Rebecca, and Breanna Billings all of Millers Creek.

Funeral service was February 17, at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Danny Dillard and Rev. Don Bowling officiating. Burial followed in Miller Cemetery.  Flowers will be accepted. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.  

 Linda Brown, 66

Mrs. Linda Mae Wagoner Brown, 66, of North Wilkesboro, passed away on February 12, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.  

Linda was born on March 25, 1953 in Wilkes County to Dollie Odell Wagoner and Gladys Eddie Brown Wagoner.

Linda is preceded in death by her parents; sons, Randall Shannon Wagoner, Allen Parsons and many brothers and sisters.  

Linda is survived by her husband, Christopher Brown; granddaughters, Kaitlyn Wagoner and Erica "Hannah" Wagoner both of North Wilkesboro ; mother in law and father in law, Vea and Paul Brown of North Wilkesboro; sisters, Marlene Testerman ( Jerry) of Millers Creek, Rebeca Blevins (Dewey) of Wilkesboro, Jeanne Shumate of Millers Creek, Sue Absher of Wilkesboro, Shirley Osborne (Robbie) Gallatin, TN, Sandra Stewart of Grover, NC; brothers, Fred Wagoner (Delores) Taylorsville, James Brown of Forrest City, Danny Brown (Kathy) of China Grove.

A visitation was held at the Mountlawn Memorial Park Chapel  February 14, and graveside service   followed.

Mr. Billy George Anderson, 75, of North Wilkesboro, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at his home.  

Billy was born on August 3, 1944 in Wilkes County to John Olden Anderson and Johnsie Bell Miller Anderson.

Billy is preceded in death by his parents; son, Jason Dewayne Anderson; brother James "Jimmy" Anderson; sister, Mary Jane Lowe and grandson, Zackary Cochran.  

Billy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Wanda Lee Cain Anderson; daughters, Gail Parks (Ricky) of Yadkinville, Penny Cochran (Larry) of North Wilkesboro; sons, Tim Anderson of Denver NC, Dalton Anderson (Anne) of North Wilkesboro; brother, David Lee Anderson of North Wilkesboro; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held February 22,  at Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes Chapel, 2109 Moravian  Falls Rd, Moravian Falls.

 Kent Greer, 81

Mr. Kent Tracy Greer, age 81 of Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

A private burial service for the family was at Mount Lawn Cemetery in Boone, February 15. Masonic rites were conducted by Ashler #373 and Military Honors were provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard.  A Celebration of Life service followed with Reverend Shannon Critcher and Reverend Jim Gore officiated.

Mr. Greer was born on February 9, 1939, in Watauga County, North Carolina, to Walter Monroe and Viola Nichols Greer. He was a devoted husband to Kate for fifty-two years, a beloved father, and grandfather. He was a member of Millers Creek Baptist Church. Throughout his entire life, Kent had an adventuresome, entrepreneurial and get it done spirit. He served in the United States Air force for four years, which took him to several countries. Later, he took his wife, Kate, to many more countries abroad and all fifty states. Known for his sense of humor and fun-loving nature, Kent readily shared laughs, jokes, and hugs with people he knew and didn't know. Regularly, Kent stated, "I've had the best life of anybody I know."

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Lenna Kate Greene Greer, a sister; Anna Lee Greene and four brothers; W.M. Greer, Jr., Fayne Greer, Brook Greer, and Quentin Greer.

He is survived by a daughter; Janet Greer Brown and husband Mike of Banner Ek, North Carolina, two sons; David Kent Greer and wife Nicole of Concord and Philip Ray Greer of Wilkesboro, six grandchildren; Zach Brown and wife Emily, Jenna Brown, Kent Richard Greer, Katelyn Greer, Tracy Greer, and wife Kelsey and Amanda Greer Stewart and husband Chris and four great-grandchildren.

  Brenda Savage, 74

Mrs. Brenda Joyce Caul Savage age 74 of Wilkesboro passed away Sunday February 9. 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston Salem.

Funeral Services were February 15,  at Rickards Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev Richard Watts Officiating.  

Mrs. Savage was born January 24, 1946 in Wilkes County to Anthony and Cynthia Marie Rouseau Caul. She retired from Tyson Foods and was a member of Rickards Chapel AME Zion Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Joe Campbell and a brother Reginald Keith Caul.

She is survived by her husband, Lavon Savage, two daughters Yolanda Burgess and husband Stephen of Walnut Cove and Lola Porter of Statesville;  two sons John Porter and wife Staci of Louisville, KY, Billy Campbell of Wilkesboro, and two step sons Terry Calhoun of Wilkesboro and Rashaun Calhoun of Wilkesboro; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren and four sisters Jacqueline Barber and husband Marvin of Wilkesboro, Deborah Carlton of Wilkesboro, Linda Howell of Wilkesboro, Maria Harris and husband Ronald of Wilkesboro; and one brother Timothy Caul of New Philadelphia OH.

 William Childress, 64

Mr. William Cole Childress, better known as Bill, age 64, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at his home in Moravian Falls.

Funeral services were February, 14, 2020 at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Murray and Pastor Rodney Blake officiating. Burial will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mr. Childress was born March 19, 1955 in Wilkes County to Luther and Pauline Annalee Porter Childress. He retired from Louisiana Pacific after 44 years of service. Bill liked to fish, loved to go out on his boat and going to Auctions. He loved his family and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Ellie Minton Childress, a daughter; Jennifer Childress, two sisters; Florence White and Mary Kay Childress and a brother; Edward Gray Childress.

He is survived by a daughter; Sally Hampton of North Wilkesboro, three grandchildren; Katie Hackett, Michael Walker and Malcolm Walker, a great granddaughter; Journee Hackett, two sisters; Elizabeth Murray and husband, Ronnie of North Wilkesboro and Carolyn Parks and husband, Alan of Lenoir, a brother; Harold Childress and wife Betsy of North Wilkesboro and a girlfriend and caregiver; Virginia Dancy and her family of Purlear.

 James Garris, 94

James Arthur Garris, age 94, of Traphill, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Woltz Hospice Home. He was born June 9, 1925 in Wilkes County to Isom and Oma Wiles Garris. He was a member of Christian Home Baptist Church. He enjoyed coon hunting and fishing. James was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Floie Prevette Garris; daughter, Lois Gregory; son, Willie Garris; brothers, Guilford Garris, Troy Garris, Lester Garris; sisters, Estelle Walls and Edith Tucker.

Surviving are his children, Billy Garris and spouse Janet of Traphill, Dottie Stanley of State  Road, Buck Garris of Traphill; sisters, Cordie Bauguess of Traphill, Ruth Martin of Lexington; special friend, Mary Pruitt of Hays; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and ten great great grandchildren.

Funeral service was February 13,   at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Key officiating.  Angel Brown, 31

Angel Nicole Brown, age 31, of North Wilkesboro, was called home early on Thursday, February 6, 2020 and left her worldly struggles behind. Angel was born June 3, 1988 in Wilkes County to Gary Maurice and Bessie Bell Bledsoe Brown. She enjoyed cooking, camping, wild crafting herbs and loved to sing.      

Angel graduated from North Wilkes High  School with honors and was a former cashier with Dollar General. She was preceded in death by her father, Gary Brown; grandparents, Ruth Ann Edwards and Faye S. Goss.

Surviving are her son, Channon Roark of the home; fiancé, Chancey Roark of the home; mother, Bessie Brown of Hays; sister, Ashley Brown and spouse Kenny Ashley of Hays; niece, Riley Ashley of Hays; nephew, Bentley Ashley of Hays.

Memorial service was February 16,  at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert Harris officiating. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the family for her son, Channon.

LGBTQIA+ Historical Romance Novels with...Favorite Authors

If you’ve followed the blog any length of time at all, you know I make lists based on themes, the one unifying factor being LGBTQIA+ representation that happens in historical romances. I started reading historicals when I was in middle school, because my grandmother and great-aunt would trade them with one another, and back then they were usually low on heat level. I went on to collect them myself, and still have most of those in storage, but left off for various reasons over time.

By the time I came back to it all, I’d reached well into adulthood, and had gone from thinking of myself as a female with tomboy issues to realizing I was non-binary and graysexual. I didn’t feel represented by any of the main characters in those romances I’d once read so avidly, but I still wanted history with a romantic twist. So, I started exploring.

What fits me, won’t of course fit everyone, but I’d like to recommend some of my favorite LGBTQIA+ historical romance authors that I haven’t seen on similar lists in the past, and authors I’m hoping to see more from soon...Maybe it will add to readers’ TBR lists...

Alex Beecroft - I honestly have no idea why Beecroft doesn’t make more Best Of lists. The broad range of her novel settings (from ancient Crete to 18th century Transylvania to Regency ships), the amount of research, character development, and evocative language, makes her one of my favorites. I don’t think there is anything she couldn’t write about, and do it well. For those interested, she also writes contemporaries, and fantasy. My favorites are The Reluctant Berserker (role reversals from the typical warrior and bard combo), and Labyrinth (non-binary MC and a twist on an old myth).

Erastes - One of the first LGBT historical romance authors I found, this author got started by writing Harry Potter slash fiction. Favorite by this author is Muffled Drum, because it’s a lovers-to-friends-to-lovers plotline.

Ainsley Gray - This author normally publishes under other names, but their recently released Unchained came to my attention, and kept it. If you like your Victorian romances with a darker twist, this one is for you. Hoping to see more from Gray, soon.

Eliot Greyson - I know next to nothing about this author, but their Like a Gentleman (Love in Portstmouth #1) put them on my One-to Watch radar. It’s actually a novella, but packs a lot into those few pages, and makes for an adorable read.

Jude Lucens - Lucens is new on the LGBT historical romance scene, but has already managed to give the genre representation in the forms of gay, bisexual, demisexual, and polyamorous MCs. She’s also a WOC author, and has included a biracial MC in her novella/novel pairing of Gutter Roses & Behind Closed Doors: Indecent Proposals Book One.

Katherine Marlowe - I don’t know what happened to Marlowe, but after several lovely novels, she disappeared. Still, her novels are ideal for those that like low dose homophobia in their historical romances, enjoy novels with working class MCs, and she has at least two novels with POC MCs. Favorites: A Wager of Love & The Blue Ribbon.

Farah Mendlesohn - Normally an author of fantasy and science fiction (they’ve won the coveted Hugo Award), this versatile author transported us to the Regency era with some wonderful historical detail, in the delightful and affordable f/f Spring Flowering. They are also the Managing Editor for Manifold Press, which will be returning this January, with a focus on LGBT historical romances.

KA Merikan - The pen name of a duo, their highwayman novel The Black Sheep and the Rotten Apple is one of my favorite bad boy/cinnamon roll novels ever. This pair typically writes contemporary series with motorcycle gangs, but even then they manage to bring historical ghosts and details, with their series Kings of Hell MC. The Art of Mutual Pleasure is another historical, which will amuse and educate, because it deals with the historically accurate notion of illness being brought on by the loss of male essence, and aggravated by self pollution.

Ruby Moone - If Moone writes it, I read it. Moone’s gents tend to reside in the Regency era, and have been adapting in terms of historical elements and diversity. They were some of the first non-titled MCs I read, and some have disabilities and/or cope with mental illnesses. The plots have increased in tension over time, but a mainstay of Moone’s novels is that despite laws against men being together, her MCs are often supported by those around them. There are also sometimes multiple Favorites: The Wrong Kind of Angel, The Mistletoe Kiss, & Thief of Hearts

Niamh Murphy - Looking for lesbian historicals? Murphy has you covered, with loving details, and also high adventure. Her Escape to Pirate Island is a staple of the LGBT pirate genre, and you can read a free sample on her site.

Victoria Sue - Typically Sue is known for contemporary novels and babies. That said, her Regency novels The Innocent Auction and The Innocent Betrayal are two you should try. They’ve a fair dose of angst, but they also come with some good espionage and character development.

Hayden Thorne - If YA and gothic are something you’re into, Thorne’s novels are a staple. An extremely prolific writer, she has created some of the most unique plot lines of any genre, while managing to have intriguing MCs, and representation. Favorites: Ansel of Pryor House

Leandra Vane - Normally a contemporary author and librian, Vane recently published the great historical Cast From the Earth, which takes place in America’s heartland in the 19th century. Vane is another author that uses her novels to explore with MCs that have disabilities, and this novel also delves into polyamorous love.

NR Walker - Walker is actually known for her contemporary m/m romances, and is one of the rare temp authors that I read a lot, because she includes so much research and detail. Recently, she made the leap into historicals though, with the fantastic Nova Praetorian, which takes place in ancient Rome.

Kelley York - In the past, some of you may have read York’s contemporary YA work, but she’s begun publishing about her beloved Victorian era gothic tastes, too. The Dark is the Night series is co-written with her wife, and I’ve been relishing the two novels that have come out so far. It even comes with its own artwork, and playlist.

Of course, there are the mainstays of the genre, authors that have gone above and beyond on bringing LGBTQIA+ representation to the historical romance reader: Keira Andrews, Joanna Chambers, KJ Charles, Charlie Cochrane, Bonnie Dee, Summer Devon, Jordan L Hawk, Ava March, EE Ottoman, and Cat Sebastian.

Page 3. ---- ESCAPED NAZI RECAPTURED GUARDS FIRE AT FIVE CARS ---- German Officer Who Bolted From Hospital, Is Found in Parked Auto --- Special to The Star Oshawa, May 14 - Five shots were fired at west-bound motor cars last night by members of the Veterans' Guard seeking Major Hans Asmus, 27, a Nazi airman. He jumped from a window at the Oshawa General hospital while reporting for x-ray. Asmus was captured at 2.30 a.m. today in the rear seat of a parked motor car in Oshawa's residential section. The capture was made by two Oshawa policemen, Patrol Sergt, F. Fawbert and Constable Charles Stainton.

The shots were fired by the guards at motorists who did not stop at a barrier across the highway at Pickering.

Asmus' escape was the second in 24 hours, Hans Hilpert having escaped from a prison camp at Monteith, Ont., Wednesday. He was captured later at Cochrane.

While military and police authorities prepared to extend their dragnet to Niagara Falls and Orillia, Jane A. Murdoch, Reg.N., an assistant in the x-ray department at the hospital, notified police that Asmus,

whom she had met previously in the course of her duties at the hospital, had stopped her near her home and asked her to change some English currency into Canadian money.

"I was so frightened I did not know what to do." she said. She was returning from the hospital on her bicycle when Asmus jumped from the rear end of a truck and accompanied her a half block to her home.

"He came around to the side of the house and told me that he intended to take the afternoon 'off," she related, "He told me he had about three dollars in English money and he asked me to give him five dollars. He promised that he would return it when he got to Toronto.

Miss Murdock said Asmus told her he had no intention of trying to get out of Canada. "He told me that he had been behind barbed wire for nearly three years and that he wanted some fresh air," she said.

"He told me that he had spent most of his time on the main street. He said he almost touched an armed soldier who was detailed to hunt for him."

This occurred, Miss Murdoch said, while Asmus was helping an elderly woman across Oshawa's main Street.

Miss Murdoch explained that Asmus had shown little desire to remain free very long. "He told me it was against his 'German hơnor' to give himself up and that he had to to be captured."

Asmus had been taken to the hospital for the last of a series of x-ray treatments shortly after 5 p.m.

Believed Window Barred "Asmus asked to go to the washroom," an officer said. "The escort is under orders never to let his prisoner out of his sight. But in this case the escort was said to have have been given assurance that the washroom window was barred."

Asmus was seen by Angus Mitchell climbing out through the hospital window.

More than 30 members of the Veterans' Guard were called out from the prison camp at Bowmanville, where Asmus had been held. to aid in the search. A call was also sounded for city, provincial and R.C.M.P. officers. R.C.M.P., Constable J. L. Thomson of the Ohsweken detachment, who handles the German shepherd dog Duke which has taken part in many searches, was called. At the time of Asmus' capture Duke was within 100 yards of the parked automobile and heading straight for it. Using the officer's hat, hat, which he had left at the hospital, Constable Thomson put Duke on the scent at the side of the Murdoch home.

Edward Hopper and the American Hotel at  the Indianapolis Museum of Art

INDIANAPOLIS, IND.- Explore  the highly-anticipated exhibition, Edward Hopper and the American Hotel at  the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields from  July 19, 2020 through October 25, 2020. This exhibition is welcoming guests  back inside the IMA Galleries for the first time since mid-March. Travel back  in time to experience the iconic American painter like never before in this  major loan exhibition.

   “Newfields is thrilled to welcome guests back inside the Indianapolis Museum  of Art with this major exhibition,” said Dr. Charles L. Venable, the Melvin  & Bren Simon Director and CEO of Newfields. While Hopper has long been  considered one of the most important American masters, interest in his work  has soared during this period of anxiousness and isolation. His depictions of  individuals alone in their hotel rooms and even completely empty rooms have  even more relevance now.”    The exhibition features 57 of Edward Hopper’s (1882-1967) paintings,  drawings, watercolors and magazine covers–including the Indianapolis Museum  of Art’s iconic Hotel Lobby—that show his fascination with commonplace  hospitality settings of the time. Hopper’s work is often explored through a  lens of loneliness, but American Hotel provides a different context for the  celebrated American artist’s work. Guests will discover how 20th-century  Americans participated in travel culture, depending on their race, gender,  and class; and see how Hopper’s works fit into a larger tradition of the role  of the hotel in art. Hopper’s paintings and works on paper are being  presented alongside 31 works by over 20 other artists including Derrick  Adams, David Hockney, Cindy Sherman and John Singer Sargent.

The works are accompanied by firsthand accounts of travel culture in Hopper’s time in the form of photographs, postcards and personal stories from Americans of different walks of life. While the white artist and his wife Josephine ‘Jo” Nivision Hopper could check into virtually any hotel of their choice in the mid-20th century, this was not true for Black Americans nor single women because of racism and sexism. These facts are highlighted in the show to give a more accurate depiction of hotel culture in America during this time. The exhibition features a life-size recreation of Hopper’s Western Motel painting that invites guests to peer into a mid-century modern getaway, much like the woman painted in the original scene. After a long day of travel (through Newfields) stop by Pop-Up: Hotel Bar, just steps away from the exhibition space, to sip cocktails that were popular among Americans during this time. Edward Hopper and the American Hotel was organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, in partnership with the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. The exhibition was conceived and curated by Dr. Leo G. Mazow, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art’s Louise B. and J. Hartwood Cochrane Curator of American Art, and curated for the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields by Anna Stein, Assistant Curator of Works on Paper. “There have been so many exhibitions and books written about the famous Edward Hopper. This one takes an especially thoughtful and creative approach to de-mystifying a great artist,” said Stein. “Dr. Mazow has brought together a stunning group of artworks that can rarely be seen together, and our team is so excited to present them in Indianapolis.”
