thinking about the moment ortega realizes sidestep is different now. that exact moment where they realize that the sidestep they knew and cared about and loved just. isn't the same person. and they're not different in the way that time changes everyone, or in the way that ortega might have expected them to be different after heartbreak. there's a moment where they have to realize that there is something unavoidably wrong with sidestep now. they've been bent and broken down into a new shape that they can't come back from. and ortega still loves them, of course they do... but sidestep isn't really sidestep anymore. not like they were.

and of course the other side of this is steel realizing sidestep is different. he knows (at least more than ortega does) what happened, so he can put the pieces together a bit more. see the through line. but at the same time that he knows the exact fucked up thing that has demolished the person sidestep used to be, he is also seeing someone that he now... likes? is capable of having affection for? might even be falling in love with? but all of that is also so tied up in the guilt of knowing he gave up on them. that in a very real way, he shoulders some of the blame for what happened to them.

with ortega it's "i was in love with you and now you're different and i still love you, but it's different." and there's a grief in that, i think. with steel it's "i hated you because i couldn't understand you so you suffered unimaginably. and now i don't hate you anymore." and there's grief in that, too.
