i am in the silliest goofiest of all moods so i decided to take my top 3 ice creams of this summer and share with you which characters they remind me of the most. let me know if you think you are sillier and/or goofier by sending me your favourite ice cream
Tumblr media
at number 3 we have Arpeggio as Haagen-Dazs Dulce de Leche, and specifically the mini tub that comes in a box of four flavours. despite the flavour's Latin American roots, i think Arpeggio would savour it because he likes to indulge in different cultures as a certified genius. kinda sophisticated like him, and just like his time in the game, short and sweet
Tumblr media
number 2 is a cool remix of a childhood classic: blondie caramel Maxibon with the waffle. I've paired it with Rajan because the packaging is orange, duh but also because it has two different sides. the waffle is Rajan's regal facade, appealing to Westerners, whereas the ice cream bar side is rough and rocky just like the predator within
Tumblr media
the Kinder Bueno ice cream is paired with Carmelita and takes the number one spot this summer. is this coupling based on personal bias? maybe! the flavours here are so nostalgic and reimagined into ice cream form perfectly. the cone and hardened chocolate on top form a tough exterior but inside the core is soft and rich, just like Carmelita herself. 10/10 masterpiece

I finally got all 100% trophies in BG3! It took me 541 hours of gameplay and 4 different playthroughs to do it. It's crazy to think I've been playing this game routinely since its release and I still kept finding new things on every playthrough, truly one of the most games of all time 😭

unconditional devotion is fun and all but i love when you have to work on your relationships with characters in rpgs. it's so much fun when they openly question mc's decisions if they are not aligned with their morals. when they object and start an argument and must be convinced to do something. when they don't join mc in the final fight if you don't trust each other enough.
the payoff hits so much harder this way. if you're a dick to them they will not put you above their principles and stances because why would they? but if you helped them if you proved yourself to be trustworthy if you were good to them they will stand beside you even if they're conflicted and have to sacrifice something for that. and it's so cathartic when you know they could leave but at the end of the day they didn't! because them and your character are besties! friendship and love are hard to earn but you did it and now it helped you win!

i saw like a "bad fanfiction bingo" thing and it kinda struck a nerve because there were so many things on there that were just like. either personal preference or things that were NOT inherently bad writing. i'm sure that plenty of the best fics i've ever read would hit some squares on that card.
it just reminded me that so much of writing is about context and intent.
using little-to-no punctuation is something that can be employed to great effect, if it's a stylistic choice.
script format? works perfectly well for something like homestuck as-is; also, that's such a vague description that includes screenplay and comic script fics.
moaning/screaming/laughing typed out? so context-dependent oh my god. huge fan of when dialogue is broken by a little -- ah -- during a scene, for example
"eye color compared to gemstones" really peeved me personally since like. yeah one of my favorite characters has amber eyes. like that's straight up on the wiki page. yeah sorry i compare my blorbo's irises to blue labradorite because they are blue and gold and have chatoyant properties. skill issue if you don't like that
i'm sure i'm willfully misinterpreting the intent of the post i saw a bit. i'm sure op would not universally claim every single thing they wrote is a Sign of something being Bad. but like. that's the problem with generalizing anything when it comes to writing

"oh really?" / "yes, really." / "lying doesn't suit you, sweetheart." + jacob/mercy?
Tumblr media
Mercedes frowned at the closed bedroom door and turned on her side, trying her best to fall back to sleep after Jacob had woken her up with a hushed "good morning" before crawling out of bed and getting dressed quickly without muttering even a word. Just as she felt herself drifting off, she heard him reenter the room, but the expected dip of the mattress never followed. "You're lurking in the corner as a sleep paralysis demon now?", she remarked after sneaking a glance his way and finding him standing at the footboard with his arm crossed and an unreadable expression on his face. "Get dressed.", his tone carried the same impatient note it did anytime he dealt with his men, "I will be waiting outside." "What for?", she called out at his retreating form, letting out a curse when the front door slammed shut behind him, "Yes, I'd love a coffee first, thanks for asking." She threw on a dress and shoved her feet into her boots, her mood only soaring further at the chilly morning air when she left the cabin. Jacob was waiting for her in the driveway, blue eyes running over her body, "That would be a first.", he grumbled under his breath, taking off towards the woods that surrounded the property. "Wait up.", Mercedes tried her best to keep up with his long strides, "You know, I like it better when I wake up with you between-" "No distractions." "Did you completely snap on me?", she couldn't help the humor that slipped into her question when he came to a stop in front of what she could only describe as newly set shooting targets. "No.", came as reply, and he unholstered his pistol, "Come on." She shook her head, gesturing at his extended hand, a lie rolling off her tongue easily, "I'm actually not a fan of weapons." "Remember what you told me yesterday?", he didn't wait for her answer, "You want to run around my region unsupervised, sweetheart? I gotta know you can at least protect yourself." "So you took that as an invitation to wake me up at crack of dawn… then march me into the woods without a word so I can shoot at targets?" Jacob smirked, "You forgot the part where you put on a dress for it." "Sure, I did."
Her eyeroll didn't seem to discourage him from his mission as he began explaining to her the basics before he extended the pistol to her. "I said-" "We're at war, Mercedes." Refresh my memory… whose fault is it, again? She grabbed the gun from him reluctantly, but on the inside, she was relishing in its familiarity as he positioned himself behind her. "Breathe. Focus on the target. Then, pull the trigger.", Mercedes set her sights on one of the easiest targets, and the shot landed exactly where she intended it to. Far, far away from the center. Baby steps. "Excellent. Again.", he muttered, making her bite back a laugh at the praise and the fact her performance was far from that. She took three more shots, their sound echoing in the quiet forest. "Now for the next shot, actually try, Mercedes.", Jacob chirped as his hands landed on her waist, and he shifted closer. "Wow. Rude much? I was trying the whole time.", she let hurt mix with the annoyance in her voice. "Oh, really?", fingers pushed her hair aside to expose her neck before his mouth moved to it. "Yes, really. Why did you even praise me, then?" A kiss. His lips traveled upwards until they reached her ear, "Lying doesn't suit you, sweetheart." If you only knew how ironic this is… "I don't know what you mean." "You could continue to act dumb or actually show me what you're made of…" Her annoyance was real then, mostly at his arrogant demeanor and the fact he was seeing through her act, "You're an awful teacher, you know? If this is some strange way of motivating me… it's failing." "Hit the center this time.", there was no hint of doubt in his words as his fingers squeezed her waist at the same moment she pulled the trigger. Bull's eye. When her hands lowered, he pried the pistol from her grip and returned it to its holster before his eyes settled on her face. The curiosity swimming in their depths wasn't something she was excited to see. "What?", she asked innocently, rubbing her hands over her upper arms in attempts to warm up, already wishing she was back inside and snuggled in bed instead of playing soldier, "Are we done? Can I go back to sleep now?" Jacob stripped off his overshirt and threw it over her shoulders, "We're only just beginning, sweetheart. How about we move on to the part where you tell me where you learned to shoot, and maybe I will let you know what gave you away." Well, that should be fun.

EN vs JP: Firelit Sky
Tumblr media
Original Jamil: I’m just a servant who doesn’t like hassles.
EN Jamil: Just a dedicated employee who hates cleaning up other people’s messes.
Tumblr media
Original Malleus: As to be expected of a servant of the merchant family, Asim.
EN Malleus: You're a credit to the merchant family that employs you, Viper.
Tumblr media
Original Jamil: I have a generous master...
EN Jamil: Kalim is a big spender.
Tumblr media
Original Vendor: You're not on an errand for Kalim-sama, right?
EN Vendor: You're not on an errand for Kalim, right?
Original Jamil: I must apologize for when Kalim-sama did that.
EN Jamil: I must apologize for when Kalim did that.
Tumblr media
Original Jamil: ...this person is a friend of my master...
EN Jamil: You're speaking to a friend of my employer...
Original Jamil: I have been assigned to showing my master's school friend around town today.
EN Jamil: I'm showing my employer's friends around town today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(It is not unusual for Jamil's role to be changed from "servant" to "employee," and Kalim's role changed from his "master" to his "boss.")
Interestingly, Jamil does not refer to other people in the Asim household with the same word!
Tumblr media
He uses 使用人 when referring to the other people that Kalim’s parents employ, which is closer in meaning to employees or staff, so no problems here.
Tumblr media
For himself, however, he uses the word 従者, which is closer to the English word “servant” (personal attendant / follower / body servant / etc).
Tumblr media
Original Jamil: The lord of the manor asked you to wear your dorm uniform for the unveiling, right?
EN Jamil: And that’s why your father told you to come to the party in your uniform, right?
Tumblr media
Original Jamil: Word reached the Lord and the Lady, and they told me they wanted to try some…
EN Jamil: Work reached Kalim’s mother and father, and they told me they wanted to try some.
Jamil uses extremely formal speech when speaking about Kalim’s mother and father.
Tumblr media
Original Cater: Our cute guides of the Scalding Sands increased by one!
EN Cater: Yeah, why settle for one guide, when we could have two?
This is a difficult sentence to put into English, but Cater isn’t just saying that now they will have a cute guide, in reference to Najma; he is specifically calling both Viper siblings cute.
Removing (or replacing) the word “cute” from Cater’s dialogue is not new for the EN server.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like most languages you are generally supposed to avoid repeating the same words over and over again in written Japanese, just like in English. Whenever it’s done in Twisted Wonderland it is generally on purpose and for a story- or character-related reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cater, for example, intentionally refers to everything around him as “cute” as a remnant of the environment in which he was raised.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The “-sama” honorific gets localized into multiple different words for EN.
Tumblr media
If Jamil’s expression here was kind of confusing for you, this might be why: he originally says “DOKKAN!”, which is kind of like “boom”? The sound of something exploding/breaking.
It is a direct homage to what Jafar yells in the Japanese-language dub of Disney's Aladdin, during his version of the "prince Ali" song.
Tumblr media
It was also a shout-out to Book 4 when overblot-Jamil sent everyone flying into the desert with an explosion (where “DOKKAN!” was translated as “WHOOPEEEEE!” for EN.) Jamil’s DOKKAN is infamous amongst JP server fans, and he is often referred to as Dokkan-senpai.
In the original, English-language Aladdin, Jafar's line there is "whoopee", making the Book 4 use of the line a direct homage, just like the original game :>

In lieu of a joke post about how people who choose to do "evil" playthroughs have much greater willpower than I can ever aspire to (was in turn based combat against Wyll with tears in my eyes), I gotta say I'm disappointed with the evil route, at least insofar as it manifests in act 1.
Not in that you lose some companions for attacking the Grove - there should be consequences to suddenly turning on a bunch of innocents - but in that aside from bloodlust or rp'ing that your character hates tieflings, there isn't really a compelling reason to do so. What does siding with the goblins offer? An easier fight, technically, but on paper beforehand you're told to go after 3 people that can each be isolated in the goblin camp, versus the entire druid grove, so why would the player assume the latter would save time or effort? Conceivably they could offer information about the Absolute, but it doesn't feel like there's enough dialogue to justify that - what with Gut trying to kill you almost immediately and Minthara going straight to demanding your obedience. Why do you have to default to an avid worshipper right off the bat, when it would be perfectly reasonable to play into your ignorance and gather information about the Absolute from her followers first, with the promise of more if you gain their respect? I'll admit that this could be difficult if True Soul is already a position of authority, but these interactions could feel a bit more tit for tat by laying out some lore breadcrumbs to pique interest. Or I'm imagining if there were some sidequests or even conversations like that with Rolan, Cal and Lia with the goblins that could lend them some character traits beyond violent and happily violent.
After the raid, you're given the option when speaking to Volo to say that you had to convince the goblins that you were on their side. But when did you decide that would benefit you. What [PERSUASION/DECEPTION] dialogue options or discussions with other party members lead up to that. If Wyll and Karlach are going to advocate for eliminating the goblin leaders, who's playing goblin's advocate? The motivations don't need to be laid out as plainly as the narrator going 'hey, this could be manipulated to your benefit', but it would be neat if everybody had something to say about the possibility of the raid before it actually happened.
I tend to style 'evil' characters as being self-serving and spiteful rather than bloodthirsty for the sake of it, and maybe that's on me for just looking for things the game isn't designed for. But from that perspective, the most in-character choice seems to be skipping out on this conflict altogether. Which I would think most people are disinclined towards in favour of seeing as much of the game (and gaining as much XP) as they can. I would love to have Minthara as a companion, but my power-hungry wild magic sorcerer isn't going to be convinced into some quick genocide on the hunch that she'll prove more open to sharing later. If you're playing a Dark Urge and leaning into it, this probably works well, but it doesn't seem well suited towards other interpretations of what evil entails.
(Also seen other people point out that the druids have some not at all subtle racism going on, and as a tiefling it would have been nice to have the option to save the tieflings and leave the druids to fend for themselves.)
For anyone out there who has sided with the goblins, would really love to hear your thoughts on it/what guided that decision! Or if there's some dialogue that I'm missing out on! I want to like it, but it's looking like a lesser alternative right now. I'm genuinely debating going back, getting Halsin and then leaning into the Absolute with Act II with the rationale that they're presenting an obvious way to get through the Shadowlands. Once it becomes clearer what the Absolute is/how much danger they're in in trying to stand against it, then I can see the characters playing along, but in Act I the motivation feels weak.

while i think it's fair to worry about how much they're going to change certain stuff, i also think there's Way too much doomposting surrounding bg3's changes in characterisation
#'they changed lae'zel' its literally a greeting.#which changes w different levels of affinity#and according to what i've read it was always in the game files but wasn't working?#she's pretty much still the same in the main plot and in her romance#and the whole thing w gale being more lenient about the magic items is literally bc he would leave if you closed the inventory#without giving him anything#like literally the only real change in characterisation that i've seen has been astarion and his opinion on the mizora thing#that and the gortash gay letters that were changed#other than that the changes have only added scenes (mostly related to epilogue stuff which may have felt lacking at first) and fixed bugs#i will also say that wyll's part in all of this has been Very lacking because he truly needs more content in comparison to astarion#but if they're willing to listen to fans? maybe they Will add stuff?#and about the added lines to the gortash scene.... adding more dialogue options is Not changing the characterisation of a character#it's literally giving you more options. if you don't like them you can literally NOT press the button#OH. i've just remembered. halsin's new thing. not going romantic on you if you didn't flirt with him#that's also another characterisation change i noticed. but that's a coherent one#if you didn't flirt with halsin why would he. yk.#anyways. i'm seeing too much doomposting. worrying about this is normal but people are being so pessimistic#mona.txt

Hello! For the character building questions…
13, 21 and 45, all for your Hawke? :)
(or anyone you'd like to answer for)
13. When do they fake a smile? How often?
Really often, actually. Secret's whole thing is built around the idea of "fake it 'til you make it" and she's also a trickster by nature, so that means a lot of smiles that aren't entirely genuine. I guess I can split those fake smiles into two main categories: one is what Malcolm taught her, finding something to smile about when everyone expects you to be distressed (I guess this is more forced than fake, but I'll say it counts for the question), and the other is her being over-the-top on purpose, turning her charm up to eleven to distract people from something else that's going on. This could be anything from chatting up some guards as a distraction to going out of her way to become the most popular recruit at Ostagar despite being an apostate who, theoretically, shouldn't draw attention to herself at all.
21. What common etiquette do they disagree with? Do they still follow it?
She got plenty of criticism for being "too cheerful" in the wake of Malcom, Bethany and Leandra's deaths, respectively, exactly for the reasons detailed in the previous answer. This was especially ironic in Malcolm's case, because this version of Malcolm was the kind of guy to have "come up up at least one good joke about my death after I'm gone" as a last request. She knows that most people don't approach heartbreak the way she does, but she keeps doing it, and honestly, maybe that's why she comes out of the events of DA2 a little less haunted than some of my past Hawkes. (at least in theory. here's to hoping that things don't suddenly become Super Tragic once I actually play her)
45. What’s something unimportant / frivolous that they hate passionately?
I actually don't think she's the type to hate something passionately, especially small things. Secret tends to turn even the biggest bad things that happen to her into jokes and stories and just another part of the lore she's building around herself, so if she did have a pet peeve, it would probably just be some kind of inside joke.
Thanks for the ask!

@bxtsence said: “So what exactly do you do for sustenance….? Do you drink human blood or…?”
Salvatore rolls his eyes and shoots Rowan a glare that has no real heat behind it. He taps his claws against the cool glass in his hand.
"I'm dead," he says flatly. "I can eat, but I don't gotta, because I'm dead." His shoulders tense up and he sighs, his eyes flicking down to look at the table in front of him. The surface is polished, ever so slightly, and he can see his hazy reflection against the wood. The sight makes him sneer.
Finally, he looks up. "Yes, I drink blood," he says. "I drink blood just like any other bloodsucker--it's just that I don't need it to live. I need it for energy, sure, but I ain't alive anymore, so I don't need food. I ain't gonna fuckin' starve if I can't get a meal."
As he speaks, Salvatore feels an uncomfortable twinge in his gut, long-gone hunger pangs of the past digging their teeth in as he remembers what it felt like. For nearly ten years, he'd rotted away in that basement, feeling every second of the starvation while never being granted the relief of death.
Abruptly, Salvatore rips himself out of those memories, bringing his glass to his lips and taking a long swig of his scotch. It burns going down his throat, but he hardly registers that anymore. Then, he slams it back down on the table, perhaps a tad too harshly.
"Point is," Salvatore drawls, feigning nonchalance as he turns his head back to look up at Rowan, "I drink blood, yeah. I ain't exactly special compared to the other bloodsucking leeches out there." Salvatore falls quiet after that, deciding he'd rather let the subject drop. A moment later, though, he supposes it's only fair if he asks a question in turn.
"And you?" he says, smiling wryly. "Know you've mentioned drinkin' blood before--is it the same for you? Or can you substitute somethin' else now and then?"

*Collapses*
I’m not sure I’m totally happy with this conclusion, so I’ll be waiting until morning to go over it and post, but FINALLY I got A conclusion.
I’d like the record to show that THIS was supposed to be the easy fluff that would take very little effort, and it’s taken much longer to write than the core of the one about human experimentation. This has been a PATTERN.
