Chapter 02
True, I set out not entirely certain of what it was I was looking for, but a good detective’s intuition gets them through. I followed my gut, and more efficiently, I followed my nose.
Not too awfully far from the tea house-- just off of Oolong Lane and nearing an intersection-- I found it: signs of a struggle. Several bags of groceries lay on the sidewalk, its content scattered. I avoided the carton of eggs, now smashed to smithereens, nearly tripping over a bag of oranges in the process. I, however, was able to collect myself. And with it I noticed my biggest clue: a woman’s purse laying in the middle of all the mess. A quick investigation of said purse, and one identification card later, and my rising suspicions had been confirmed.
Ms. Maeiz, recently missing mother of seven, had been nanny-napped. Right off the street, in broad daylight, no less! Oh, to think about the sort of things they could be doing to that poor woman even as I stood there-- poor pretty miss, meek and miserable.  It was enough to make even a hardened detective, such as myself, weary as I stared at the family photo in Ms. Maeiz’ wallet.
It was then I knew, surrounded within the disturbing destruction, that the kids had to have seen SOMETHING. Anything, really, would be more of a tip to the terror that had taken place, than just meandering about.
I made haste, and hotfooted it back to the tea shop-- determined to solve the case.
I’ll admit, the police cars parked in front of the building may have squashed my enthusiasm over my discovery, ever so slightly. I drew a hand down my tired face.
“I told them not to call the cops!”
TYPICAL! Just like a bunch of well-to-dos to not listen to the word of the working class. That is to say, I was working and they didn’t listen! Disregarded my commands altogether! WELL, I wasn’t going to put up with it, no siree. So it was with aggravation hardening my disposition that I stormed up to the front of the shop determined to stare the cop on guard down!
Unfortunately for me, not only did the guy have no eyes to be seen, he was missing his entire head.
“Sir,” he said from who knew where, holding up a hand to stop me. “I’m sorry, but this is a crime scene. You’re not allowed to enter the premises.”
“I know it’s a crime scene-- I was here first!” I was mad, let me tell ya. And with it I got closer to this headless herald, jabbing him in the chest as I stared down his neck. “Now you WILL let me through to interrogate the Maeiz children, or so help me, I’ll--”
“You’ll WHAT?” This voice was gruff, and one I recognized-- even in my surprised stupor. “Need I remind you that threatening an officer is a punishable offense?”
Broad and as boorish as ever, it was the last person I wanted to see: Constable Ogol. Tall, and just as unsightly as any ogress you’d expect to see, she didn’t look happy to see me, either. She placed a hand on the other officer’s shoulder, gently pushing past him even as she refused to break eye contact with me.
“I’ll take it from here, Jack. I’ve had dealings with Mr. Wolf before.” Ogol huffed, looming over me as she crossed her arms against her chest. “Your friend said to be expecting you. What did you find?”
Really! How dense did she think I was? Like I was going to assist her in taking this case away from me! As if I was just going to hand it to her on a silver platter!
“Oohh no, I don’t think so!” I tucked my findings away under my coat, just in case Ms. Ogol happened to be the snatching type. “This is my case, get your own.”
Childish, perhaps, but the truth. The constable didn’t seem to appreciate the gesture or my words. She loomed over me, looking none too pleased.
“Mr. Wolf, you are aware that withholding evidence is a criminal offense, yes? As is disturbing a known crime scene.”
I was distantly aware of Felix behind me, tapping my shoulder. As I felt I was dealing with more important matters at the moment, it only served as an annoying distraction.
“Norman! I thought you might like to know--” Felix was whispering to me now, couldn’t he see I was busy? I waved him off.
“To an ordinary citizen, sure! But I am a trained detective!”
“Trained?” At this the constable raised a brow. “I believe your file says otherwise.”
“HA! Like you know anything about MY life.” I snarked. I wasn’t having any of what she was saying, and was calling the ogre’s bluff.
And unfortunately for me… she answered the call.
“‘Norman Davis Wolf. Four foot; one hundred eighty two pounds.’ Last recorded, of course.”
This was added with a smirk, as she looked at my covered midsection. Let’s just say a certain someone’s stock of dainty cakes hadn’t left me quite as dainty since my academy days. I frowned. Constable Ogol, on the other hand, became serious once more.
She continued.
“‘While the candidate shows overzealous passion for the job, he lacks much else. Trouble with coordinating with others, refusal to think before rushing ahead. This, and low test scores, are why we must regrettably excuse Mr. Wolf from the academy.’ End quote.”
And at this I was silent. It was… a shock to hear words I hadn’t thought of for some time. And by somebody I didn’t like, to boot! It was equal part humiliating as it felt like having an unhealed wound get stabbed violently with a fork. It wasn’t going to end your existence, sure; but it still HURT, you know!
“I… see the old adage is true,” I grumbled, clutching the purse closer to my person. “An ogre truly doesn’t forget, do they?”
“Um… Elephant.” It was the other officer, the headless Jack of the trade, that had interrupted the conversation this time. He rubbed the stump where a neck would have been, awkwardly. “I think the saying is ‘elephants never forget’…”
I rolled my eyes.
“Nobody’s ever said it that way.” I challenged.
“Norman, everybody says it that way,” was Felix’s sassy retort. Great, whose side was he even ON?! I turned to give him a look to let him know his betrayal was not appreciated, but the look he gave me back seemed to overwhelm mine.
“Oh so now I’ve got your attention.”
I was about to comment on all of the excess sass this afternoon, when he surprised me by wrapping an arm around my shoulders and pulling me close.
“I thought you might like to know, Norman, the kids mentioned their mother having a boyfriend?” He whispered. Of course! My trusty sidekick had come through with vital information to our case. His earlier betrayal must have simply been a ruse to confuse our intervening company. What luck!
Felix stepped away and I turned back to face the constable again. She did not look happy about our conversation being interrupted, but then again, I don’t think I’d ever seen this woman look happy about anything.
“Perhaps you were right, constable, I was being unreasonable.” Oh, it hurt. But I reached into my coat and took out the pilfered purse. “Here, take it.”
Ogal gaped at me as if I’d just pulled out a rotten cod instead of an unassuming fashion bag.
“You touched it? Without wearing gloves?!”
Ah. Right. Whoops? It was time to make a hasty escape. I tossed the purse at her, and she fumbled with it, before securing her hold on the object. Of course, I was already on my way out.
“Good luck with that!” I called out, my partner and I making our way out of the crime scene and back onto the trail of our next clue.
____________
“You realize she was wearing gloves, right?”
Outside and down the block from the tea shop, Felix decided to share with me his “wisdom”.
“What?”
“The constable. She was wearing gloves, it’s still only your fingerprints on that purse, Norman. And another thing, was it a good idea to just give her the purse? Don’t you still need that?”
Ah, Felix, always getting so caught up in the little details. I scoffed and waved him off, so he would know just how silly he was being.
“Please! I still have her wallet, we’re fine. All Ms. Grump got was a bag full of makeup and coupons for baby wipes.”
“You kept her wallet? That is not going to look good! Oh Norman, what have you gotten yourself into ...”
I was about to retort-- and oh boy did I have a good one!-- but I was interrupted by a little voice from behind me.
“Yeah! You’re gonna get in so much trouble!”
I turned to see seven little kids lined up behind me. How had they managed to sneak past the cops? How had they followed us without being noticed?
“How did you! Where did you! When did-- oh forget it.”
I didn’t know why I was complaining. While I could have easily and flawlessly found other ways to find the fiendish felons who filched from fatherless tykes’ mother, it didn’t hurt to have a personal source. What I needed to know was the ‘who’, and any detective worth their salt knew the first suspect was always the spouse.
Or in this case: boyfriend.
“Enough about that.” I started, getting on a knee to be at eye level with the children. “You’re here, and I could use your help.” I gestured to Felix standing next to me. “My pal said you guys mentioned something about your mother dating someone. What can you tell me about him?”
What I didn’t expect was for all the children to speak at once.
“He’s really nice!”
“And funny!”
“Plays all sorts of games with us!”
“Mommy says he’s handsome!”
“And TALL!”
“And he has lots of friends!”
“BAAA!”
The last was a bleat from the baby of the bunch, nestled into the arms of the oldest son. While it would only be fair to trust the tyke’s testimony, I had a feeling it had nothing to do with the case. Especially as the sibling stuck a bulbous binky into their mouth.
I tapped a finger against my maw in thought, as I considered if anything of value had actually been said.
“I… see.” Admittedly, I did not. But I tried to come up with another line of questioning. “And just where might I find this Mister… Mister… “ I frowned, feeling ridiculous. “Um, actually, what do you kids call the guy? I can’t keep calling him your mother’s boyfriend.”
My witnesses were eager to answer my questions.
“Momma calls ‘im Honey.”
“And Sweetie!”
But unfortunately, maybe not the most helpful. That was, until the eldest spoke up.
“He has us call him Larry. But between you an’ me, I don’t think that’s his real name.”
Larry? Could it be, THE Larry? I had my doubts. What were the odds! It was then I remembered the wallet. I took it out and began searching through it for clues, now on the lookout for more than just the missing’s identification. What I found confirmed my wary speculations and squashed my doubts.
A wallet sized family photo: A nice little middle aged woman. Seven nice little kids. And right beside them?
“Ah HA! Larry Lemonade! This guy just can’t help himself, can he? Felix! Keep an eye on the kids, I’ve got a wolf to question!”
“WHAT?” The Fox questioned, eyes wide as he whipped himself towards my direction. “And just what am I supposed to do with them?”
“I don’t know, take them to the park? The movies?”
I had no idea what kids liked, but it was evident SOMEbody needed to keep them busy. Lest the guys who napped their mother returned for them. I threw my arms up in frustration, even as I began to stomp away.
“Heck, take them to our place, for all I care. I just need you to stash ‘em away while I go hunt down the next piece of the puzzle.” Stomping became a jog, as I called back to the best (and only) babysitter I knew. “Things are coming together, Felix. I CAN FEEL IT!”
And it was with zealous that I began running. Seven little goats were no longer my concern, as I was a wolf on a mission. Destination? Where all no-good wrong-doers ended up once caught:
Prison.

Chapter 2
Her bathtub mixture was not the same thing they’d used for Barnaby, but it was close enough. It was the simplest way she knew to kill someone so swiftly and so painfully. And it was a renewable resource, unlike many of her weapons. All she needed was a good stock of peaches and a pool-supply store. Nothing that required restricted access or even a mailing address, nothing that her pursuers could track.
She says shit like this, yet in chapter one, she told the readers that she needed to take private contracting jobs so that she could buy her lab equipment and chemicals.
I get that fake IDs cost a lot of money. But if she’s whipping this shit up in her bathtub with a peach pit and common pool chemicals, then there’s literally no need for her to endlessly put herself at risk by continuing to stay in her former occupation.
If Carston was lying to her—which she was 97 percent sure he was— and arranging an ambush, then everything he’d said was a lie.
This is why I can’t take her seriously as a protagonist. Because I would not risk my life for that 3% chance that the entire thing wasn’t yet another trap to murder me.
Casey went back to her room and changed into the clothes she’d kept inside the briefcase…
It’s not that I don’t mind the fact that our MC is constantly using fake IDs. I don’t even mind that the narration drops a name, especially when it goes on to explain to us WHY MC is going out of her way to intentionally use gender-neutral names.
But what I cannot even begin to comprehend is why in the name of sanity does the narration itself randomly rename her every single time a new ID is flashed about?
Like her name isn’t fucking Chris or Taylor or Casey. PICK ONE NAME AND FUCKING GODDAMNED USE IT FOR THE DURATION OF THE STORY.
Next, the earrings, which she always handled with delicate care. She wouldn’t risk wearing them for this part of the journey; she would wait until she was closer to her target. Once they were in, she had to move her head very deliberately. They looked like simple glass globes, but the glass was so thin that a high note could shatter it, especially as the little spheres were already under pressure from the inside. If anyone grabbed her by the neck or head, the glass would burst with a quiet pop. She would hold her breath —which she could do for a minute fifteen, easy—and close her eyes if possible. Her attacker would not know to do that.
This is 100% written by somebody who is only thinking of how cool that it is, rather than the practicality of it all.
One wrong head turn from our dear MC, and it’s all over for her. Why the fuck would anybody risk something like that?
“I don’t suppose you have the files on you,” she said.
Chapter 2 summary: The next day, Chris’s anger reaches a boiling point. She goes out and rents a car, and drives out to the DC area, where she rents a second car and goes to a hotel. On the way there, she tells the readers about the first attempt on her life.
Her mentor, Dr. Barnaby, had seen the writing on the wall. The two of them had been preparing for their own ends… and how to avoid it for as long as possible. But in the end, it was Chris’s small bladder and an urgent need to pee that saved her life; nothing but dumb luck. They’d used a poison gas through the vent system into the lab where the two of them worked. After that, they’d sent 3 hit-men, all of whom had been killed by the poison gas in the bed system Chris explained to us in the first chapter.
At the hotel, Chris talks to the manager and spins a tale of being a battered woman, of how the police weren’t helping, and neither were the restraining orders. I don’t know what any of this is doing, since it’s never explained.
We then spend the next THREE pages going over all of the cool murder gadgets that Chris has. It’s beyond tedious to read, and could have been completely and utterly cut, since none of it currently serves any purpose at all.
She then goes to the park where she told Carston to meet her. Even though she’s early, the dude has a security-breach level of daily patterns by eating lunch at the same restaurant. Three costume changes later, and she slides into the seat across from him.
Her actual name is finally introduced as Juliana (Julie), so that’s what I’m going to fucking call her, since the goddamned book changes her name every time a new fake ID is used. Carston says all of this garbage about how “there were so many untrustworthy people who didn’t believe that honest people could exist!” The only thing Julie can think of is that he’s quick to put the blame onto a mysterious third party, and never the fact that he himself was complacent in letting Dr. B be killed.
Eventually, Carston gets around to telling Julie about this great danger that’s so urgent it trumps their need to have a hit on HER. The usual buzz words are thrown around, like “terrorists” and “biological”. Julie sits and thinks about this for a full page before asking if he has the files.

Hi! Could I request TBD for WIP Wednesday if I’m able?
11/20/24 WIP Wednesday (Closed) | TBD AU
It feels so strangely similar to the immediate aftermath of Baltimore. Andrew can’t stand the thought of Neil leaving his field of vision and if he has to close his eyes he wants Neil’s rough scarred hand in his. Neil stays with him and Andrew doesn’t even comment on all of the staring Neil does since Andrew has been staring right back at him.
Eventually Andrew’s released with a clean bill of health but there isn’t a single part of him that’s ready to deal with his brother or sister-in-law yet. Thankfully Neil seemed to have understood that as he asks Andrew for the key to his house.
Andrew hesitates on giving it to him until Smith shows up asking if there’s anything in particular he should pack for Andrew.

Chapter 02: AO3
Summary: She hated this bitter fate and wished that her father would return even for one day. But this was an impossible wish that will never come true.
Admin talks: Hey guys long time no see. I miss you all. Forgive me for disappearing. As you know I had therapy sessions for my mental status. Now I'm completely fine and will update more. I can't wait to write again. Please welcome me with your reviews 😭.
With the sunlight shining on his face, Kou slowly opened his eyes. He was never a morning person. He usually couldn't sleep well at night because of his nightmares, so he woke up in the morning with great difficulty. Sometimes he wished he could just sleep peacefully for one day without any nightmares.
Kou: Damn it... why do I have to go to school every day? Ahhhhhh...
With great difficulty, Kou got up from his bed and went to his wardrobe to put on a shirt. After choosing his shirt, he put it on and tried to fasten the buttons.
Kou: Ahhh... this is very difficult... I wish someone else would do this for me.
Saying this, Kou remembered the pale girl who is now in the dungeon. And he smiled with this thought.
Kou: ...! Hahaha... I remembered now. I have a new little girl. Maybe I can make her listen to me. Of course, I am sure that she will do it with full satisfaction. She is probably one of those fangirls who is dying to be with me for just a few seconds. What a lucky girl you are...
Thinking about his weaving and dreaming, he buttoned his shirt hard and went out of his room and went to his brothers.
Kou: Yahooooo.... Good morning...
Yuma slowly appeared from behind Kou while yawning.
Yuma: Why are ya making so much noise in the morning?
Azusa: Good morning... Kou... Yuma
Ruki, who had woken up earlier than everyone else and was busy making breakfast in the kitchen, entered the living room with a breakfast tray.
Ruki: Good morning everyone. Breakfast is ready. You can go to the kitchen and start.
Kou: Ruki, do you want to eat breakfast alone?
Ruki: No. This is not for me. It's for Eve.
Kou: Ahhhh... you are right... I was forgetting that, that girl is now in the dungeon. Poor girl must have had a hard night. I am sure she is scared now. Haha, her scared face must be so cute.
Yuma: Haha... did ya really forget or were ya thinking about her all night haha?
Kou: what the fuck Yuma? Why should I think about that ugly girl?
Azusa: Kou... you're such a liar... we all saw yesterday... how you... were staring at Eve. Besides... she is very... cute and beautiful... if you call her ugly, you are lying.
Kou: Azusa, you should see my fans, they appear in front of me every day with the best makeup. I'm sure this girl has never put on makeup.
Azusa: That... makes her more beautiful...
Kou: It's ridiculous...
Yuma: Haha, just say you love her.
Kou: Never...
Ruki: Enough. Your fights are like children's fights. Do not forget the right behavior. Anyway, I will take het breakfast to explain some rules to het. Then we all have to go to school.
Kou: Shall we take Eve too?
Ruki: Of course not. She disappeared last night. Besides, we can't let the Sakamaki brothers see her.
Kou: Ruki, isn't it better to have someone stay with her at home. I mean, even if you make rules for her, she will still be a rebellious girl.
Ruki: Yeah. I will stay with her.
Yuma: Ya...
Ruki: Is there a problem?
Kou: No, you are just an honor student. Are you sure you want to stay?
Yuma: Hahahaha... What's wrong? Don't say that you want to stay with her. Boy, you fell in love with her badly.
Kou: Ahhh.... Stop Yuma. Don't say such nonsense. I'm just tired. I didn't sleep well last night. I prefer to stay at home.
Ruki: Okay.
Yuma: ...!
Kou: ....! Really? Is it okay?
Ruki: yes, but just this once.
Ruki went to the dungeon with the breakfast tray to see Eve and explain the rules to her. Kou went to the dungeon with him. Ruki frowned when he noticed Kou is following him and turned towards him.
Ruki: Why are you following me?
Kou: I want to see Eve. Her pitiful scared face should be interesting. And since I'm going to take care of her today, I need to know what rules you set for her.
Ruki: Ah... okay.
Ruki and Kou continued on their way until they reached the pale girl. It was unbelievable. She was sitting quietly staring at the door without any attempt to escape. It was as if she was waiting for them to arrive.
Ruki: Good morning Eve. So you are awake.
Hearing Ruki's voice, the girl raised her head and looked at him. You can tell from her shaking eyes and hands that she is scared. But she was trying to show herself strong. That's why she looked at those two people without showing any fear.
Yui: Who are you? where am I?
Ruki: Don't worry Eve, I will explain everything to you soon.
Ruki put the breakfast tray in front of Yui.
Ruki: You must be hungry. you can eat I will open your hands, but remember, if you make a foolish attempt to escape, you will be punished.
Ruki slowly unchained Yui's hands. Yui was hesitant at first, but she was very hungry. Since the Sakamaki brothers are vampires, they eat little, Yui also eats very little, and this has affected her health.
Yui first took the glass of water and drank it. She seemed very thirsty. She looked at Ruki as she ate some of the food and waited for his explanation.
Ruki: Listen Eve. Or Komori Yui. You are here on the orders of an important person and you must obey us. You are going to stay here for a long time. Remember, don't think of stupid attempts to escape, they will all be futile and you will only get yourself in trouble. From today you have no right to go to school. You have no right to contact the Sakamakis and most importantly, you have no right to disobey. It is in your best interest to listen to everything I say, otherwise you will be severely punished.
Yui: Why am I here? On whose orders am I here?
Ruki: This is not important anymore. I am Ruki, the older brother of this family. And this is the second brother of the family Kou. You will meet Yuma and Azusa soon.
Kou was listening to the conversation of these two people without saying anything. He was staring at Yui. He knew he had seen Yui somewhere before, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't remember.
Ruki: We will free you. As long as you respect all the rules I said. Do you have anything to say?
Yui: Please... let me go...
Ruki: Ahhhh.... Didn't you hear what I said? Do not resist, you will only make it difficult for yourself. Now eat your breakfast as soon as possible. I will introduce you to my other two brothers and we have to go to school. But don't worry, you aren't going to be alone. Kou is by your side and makes sure you don't break the rules.
Yui was afraid of Ruki. She had to obey him, otherwise it was not clear what fate awaited her.
*TIMESKIP*
After Ruki introduced his brothers to Yui, they left the mansion and went to school, leaving Kou and Yui alone at home.
Kou: Ahhhhh... I'm finally alone. I can't wait to just have fun and relax today.
Kou walked over to the couch in the living room and threw himself onto it, yawning deeply and chuckling. He could see Yui staring at him. He smirked at Yui's look.
Kou: What happened? Didn't you think you would see your favorite idol up close, M-Neko-chan?
Yui: Idol? Are you an idol?
Kou: Haaaaaaaaa? Don't say you don't know me.
Yui: I'm sorry, but I don't know you.
Kou: Are you kidding me?
Kou went to Bookshelf and picked up some of the magazines and came to Yui. He put the magazines on the table and pointed at them angrily.
Kou: My picture is in almost every magazine. What do you mean you don't know me?
Yui: Fufu... I never read such magazines. I am sorry. But I felt that I have seen your face before. Maybe that's why you looked familiar?
Kou: Familiar? Are you crazy or something? All the girls in Japan know me. I am a famous idol that girls die to be with me for just a few seconds. How can you not know me?
Yui: I'm sorry... but I've never been interested in this kind of thing... but that doesn't make the value of your work less.
Kou: You bitch... are you trying to pity me?
Yui: No... I just...
Kou: Shut up... you worthless bastard... you are the one who is worthless. You are just a moving blood bag.
Kou angrily walked over to Yui and grabbed Yui's narrow neck in his fist and began to squeeze it to strangle Yui.
Kou: You see... you are so worthless... if I kill you now, no one will be upset. No one even knows you exist.
Yui: Kou-kun... I can't... breathe...
Kou: If I feel a little sick all the girls in Japan send me postcards and gifts to wish me well. You see, this is the difference between you and me.
Yui: Kou...kun...my breath...
Kou: Hahaha... yes, hurry up and beg for your life. You have to beg even for your life. You are just worthless prey, nothing more.
Yui's eyes were about to close when Kou released his hand and let go of Yui's neck. Yui fell to the ground in despair, coughing and struggling to breathe. Tears were flowing from her eyes and her vision was blurry.
Kou: Don't forget your place. You are as worthless as a mouse and I can easily crush you under my feet. I don't even have to do it myself. Just mention it and the fans will destroy you.
Yui: Huh...huh...I'm sorry...
Kou smirked when he saw Yui in that state and walked out of the living room. When Yui was alone in the room, she started to cry. She hated this bitter fate and wished that her father would return even for one day. But this was an impossible wish that will never come true.

Diabolik lovers Bloody Roses Novel [Chapter 02]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 02
A terrible silence filled the room. Yui was very scared. She was so scared that she could even hear the echo of her heartbeat. Her hands were shaking and she was staring at the empty bag with wide eyes. She frantically searched and shook the bag. All her belongings were thrown out of the bag, but there was no sign of the diary book.
Yui: No... No... this is impossible. The book is not in my bag.
Yui looked inside the bag several times, but there was no sign of the book. She felt ashamed that she could not keep her promise to Peter. It was perhaps the simplest thing that Yui could have done, but she had failed to do it, and a feeling of shame filled her entire being.
Yui tried to control herself and think a little about where the book might be. She reviewed all the events after the forest in her mind and remembered that while she was running in the forest, she tripped and her bag dropped from her hand. It is possible that the book fell out of her bag when she dropped it.
With these thoughts and fantasies, Yui tried to calm herself down. She now knew where the book might be, so she tried to take a deep breath and push the fear out of her heart. As she took a deep breath, she placed her bag next to her bed and lay on the bed, staring out the window at the silver moon.
Yui: (Tomorrow I will go back to the forest and find the book. Nothing bad will happen.)
In her positive thoughts, Yui slowly closed her eyes and tried to sleep. She wasn't sure if she would be able to find the book tomorrow or if her father would even allow her to return to the forest, but she tried to hope so that she could sleep peacefully.
*TIMESKIP*
In the morning, with the sun shining on her golden hair and hearing the beautiful sound of birds singing, Yui slowly opened her eyes. When she regained consciousness, she quickly got out of bed, changed her clothes and combed her hair.
Yui had slept last night hoping to go back to the forest to find her book, but now she was afraid to share this with her father and face his disapproval. However, she gathered all her courage and left her room and walked up the stairs to meet her father and talk.
When she went down the stairs, she found an empty room. Yui looked around. There was no sign of her father and apparently his hunting gun was not at home, and it seems that he has gone hunting again. But this was very strange for Yui. Her father usually used to go to the forest for hunting three times a week, but this time is the fourth time in a week. This was very strange.
Yui was very worried about her father. But she had other problems to worry about. So she decided to take advantage of this situation and her father's absence and quickly return to the forest to find the book.
Yui put on her leather boots and wrapped Hina's precious scarf around her neck and grabbed her bag and hurried out of the hut. She didn't want to make eye contact with any of the villagers because it would slow her down and she wouldn't be able to get home before her father returned. So she decided to run all the way to the forest.
She runs at full speed without looking around. Sometimes a strong wind blows and slaps Yui's face. Yui closed her eyes for a few moments to protect her face from the wind. She continued to run with her eyes closed when she hit a hard object and fell to the ground.
???: Oi stupid. What are you doing?
Hearing this voice made Yui panic. She opened her eyes and saw that she had bumped into one of the village girls and because her eyes were closed she did not see her and bumped into her. The girl had fallen on the ground and her clothes were soiled and she was looking at Yui with eyes full of anger.
Tina: Clumsy girl. Look what you did. You dirty all my clothes. Are you blind?
Yui: Tina-chan... I'm sorry... I didn't mean to...
Yui tried to apologize to her with a voice full of fear and with broken words, but before she could finish her sentence, Tina stood up and shook her clothes and walked towards Yui angrily. With every step she took towards Yui, more fear filled Yui's being and she tried to find a way to escape but there was no way. Tina stood facing Yui and leaned towards her.
Tina: You are the stupidest girl I have ever met. I will make you regret being born.
Yui: Tina-chan.... please calm down.... it was just an accident..... I didn't mean to....
*slap*
Yui's words were stopped by a hard slap on her face. In the shock of the strong blow that hit her face, Yui suddenly felt a heavy weight on her head and her head hit the ground hard. Tina hit Yui's head with her boot and put her weight on Yui's head.
Tina: You are a dirty animal..... You were just lucky that Seiji-san saved you. Even your real parents didn't want you...
Tina's weight pressed harder on Yui's head, causing Yui to moan in pain. Her cruel words made Yui cry. Even though Yui never wanted to appear weak in front of them, she couldn't stop her tears from flowing. While Yui was crying silently, Tina put more weight and pressure on Yui's head and Yui screamed in pain.
Yui: Aarrgggg.... Tina-chan... please stop.... you're breaking my head...
Tina: Hahaha... that's what you deserve, dirty animal.
Tina removed her foot from Yui's head and Yui raised her head in pain. She felt dizzy due to the great pressure that Tina had put on her and her eyes could not see anything clearly.
While kneeling and holding her head tightly, Yui tried to clean her hair. It took a few moments for her to see things clearly again and she realized that Tina was still standing facing her, staring at her with a mocking grin. Tina put her right boot in front of Yui's mouth and looked at her with an evil grin.
Tina: Hurry up you dirty dog. Lick my boot to forgive you. Lick it just like a dirty dog.
Yui was looking at Tina with a frown. She was very embarrassed. She felt ashamed to be treated like this. Yui couldn't allow herself to do such a shameful thing, but on the other hand, she was very afraid of Tina's cruel behavior and didn't want to make her angry.
Tina: Be quick...
Yui: I'm not a dog... I'm not dirty... Please leave me alone.
Tina: Aaaahhhh..... poor girl. I warned you but you ignored it.
Tina held Yui's hair with her right hand and started pulling it. Yui struggled to free her hair but Tina continued to pull it and took Yui to the village fountain and pushed her with all her strength towards the fountain causing Yui to lose her balance and fall into the fountain. All her clothes get wet.
Seeing Yui's embarrassing situation, Tina started laughing mercilessly and seemed very pleased to see Yui in such a state.
A strong autumn wind was blowing and Yui began to shiver in her wet clothes. The cold was so much that it even burned Yui's bones and Yui started to cry in despair. She was hugging herself like a full-fledged rose to warm herself a little.
Tina: That's what a dirty animal like you deserves.
???: I don't think so. I think the real demons are in front of us and we don't need to go to the forest to see them.
Hearing a strange voice behind her, Tina turned around and faced the angry face of the lovely village librarian. Peter was standing in front of her with clenched fists and a face full of anger and hatred.
Tina: How dare you call me a devil? Don't tell me that you want to support this stupid girl?
Peter: Shut up.
Tina: Ahhhhh, you are like her. Both of you are dirty worms that feed on books.
Peter: Get out of my sight before I crush your teeth. Don't forget that I am a man and my power is much more than you. You will never be able to bring the disaster that you caused to this girl on me and you will not be able to defend yourself against me. So it's best for you to get out of my sight right now.
Hearing Peter's threats, Tina panicked but tried to act calm. So she slowly walked away from the two of them without saying a word in response and didn't look behind her even once.
Peter was staring at Yui with a look full of pity and sadness. He was confused and did not know what to do. He slowly walked over to her and knelt in front of her and took off his coat and threw it around Yui's shoulders hoping to warm her up a bit.
Peter: How are you?
Yui: Achoo... Peter-san.... I can't.... move.
Peter: Don't worry Yui. I will help you.
Peter leaned over to Yui and picked her up. He tried to do it very slowly so as not to hurt Yui. Yui was shivering in his arms and her cheeks were red from the cold air. Peter started walking while holding Yui in his arms.
Yui: Peter-san... where are we going?
Peter: Don't worry Yui... I'll take you to the library. There I will give you warm milk and clean clothes to make you feel better.
Yui: No... no... wait... we shouldn't go to the library.
Hearing Yui's words, Peter stopped moving. He stared at Yui with wide eyes. He could not believe what he heard. Yui loved the library and the library was her refuge to relax. Peter didn't know what is Yui's reason for refusing to go to the library was but he was sure she had a good reason but Yui was in no condition to explain to him so Peter didn't ask her any questions.
Peter: Yui, would you like me to take you to Hina-san's house?
Yui: *Cough*.... *cough*.... yeah... take me there.
Peter gave Yui a soft smile and changed his direction towards old Hina's house. Yui was still shivering and Peter did his best to cover Yui with his coat so she wouldn't catch a cold. After walking for a few minutes, they finally reached Hina's house.
*knock knock*
Hearing the sound of the door, old Hina picked up her cane and got up from her armchair next to the fireplace and slowly walked towards the door. When she reached the door, she opened it with her old hands and seeing the sad scene that was in front of her, her smile faded very quickly and her heart beat faster and faster.
Hina frowned seeing Yui in Peter's arms with wet and clothes and looked at Peter with questioning eyes.
Peter: Hina-san, please help us. Yui is not in a good condition at all. All her clothes are wet. She may get sick at any moment. Please help us.
Hina: What happened?
Peter: I don't have time to explain. Please help Yui. I promise that I will explain everything to you. I promise.
Hearing Peter's pleas and seeing Yui's dire state, Hina opened the door fully and led Peter into her small hut. Peter took Yui to the fireplace to warm her with the fire burning in the fireplace. Meanwhile, Hina went to the kitchen and brought some warm milk for Yui and Peter.
Hina offered glasses of warm milk to Peter. Peter was trying to warm Yui and Hina went to her room to get Yui some warm and clean clothes.
A few hours passed. Meanwhile, Yui was sitting by the fireplace and trying to warm herself. Peter was sitting next to Yui and old Hina was sitting in her armchair facing them. Peter told the whole story to Hina and Yui stole her gaze from the two of them the whole time.
Hina listened carefully to everything that Peter said and at any moment she could start crying. Hina had a very kind heart and had great love for Yui. She loved Yui like her own child or even more and she didn't want to see her sad at all.
After Peter told the whole story to old Hina, Hina wanted to talk to Yui alone. She motioned with her eyes to Peter to leave them alone. Peter immediately noticed and picked up his coat from the floor and said goodbye to Yui and Hina and left the hut and returned to his library.
After a while. There was deathly silence between Yui and Hina and neither of them said anything. Only the sound of firewood burning inside the fireplace could be heard. Yui was staring at the fire and didn't even look at Hina once.
Hina: Yui... my dear girl... why are you stealing your gaze from me?
When Yui heard Hina's voice, she couldn't look away anymore. She looked at Hina with eyes that could fill with tears at any moment. Seeing Hina's innocent face and sweet smile, Yui couldn't control herself anymore and ran to Hina, laid her head on her lap and started crying. She buried her head in Hina's lap to stifle her crying and was crying with all her heart.
Yui: Hina-san.... *sob*.... why.... *sniff*.... why does everyone hate me?
Hearing Yui's words, old Hina felt her heart break into pieces. She always wished that Yui would be the happiest girl in this village and smile from the bottom of her heart. She wished that Yui would never feel the lack of affection that she could see from her parents. But it wasn't like that. Yui was an innocent girl and needed her parents' love more than anyone else.
Hina started stroking Yui's head. She tried to calm Yui down. Yui has been enjoying this since she was a child. Hina caressed Yui's soft hair with her old hands and placed a kiss on her hair.
Hina: Yui dear.... no one hates you my girl.
Yui: Yes, Hina-san. The village girls hate me. Even my real parents hated me and abandoned me.
Hina stood up from her armchair and grabbed Yui's chin, forcing her to look directly into her eyes. Hina hugged Yui and caressed her gently.
Hina: Yui... my girl.... I'm sure your parents love you.
Yui: So why did they leave me?
Hina: Maybe they wanted to protect you. We can never understand why they did it. So we should not judge.
Hearing old Hina's soothing words, Yui relaxed into her arms and closed her eyes. She felt that she was holding the dearest person in her life. Hina's embrace was so warm that Yui felt like she was holding her mother for a moment.
*TIMESKIP*
Hours passed. It was almost noon and Yui was still in old Hina's hut. Hina, who had been hugging Yui for a while, slowly fell asleep and Yui helped her go to her bed and rest.
Yui was looking at her with a soft smile while old Hina was napping. She caressed Hina's hair and kissed her forehead.
*smooch*
Yui: Thank you, Hina-san. I am really lucky to have you.
After making sure that Hina was sleeping peacefully, Yui took her bag and left the house. She had a mission that she had to complete, but these events prevented it. While her body still hurt, Yui went to the forest to find the book. She had to do it even though she was not feeling well and had a high fever. Because she had promised Peter and she could not break her promise.
Yui walked in the forest for a long time. She searched everywhere but could not find the book. Because it was dark the night before, she couldn't remember well enough where she had fallen to find the book there.
Yui searched all the places she was there yesterday but there was no sign of the book. She was getting frustrated little by little. Her body was hurting a lot and her head was spinning and she could stand on her feet with great difficulty but Yui went on to find the book.
While Yui was checking under the trees and bushes, she heard the sound of a horse neighing, which made her flinch. This area of the forest is very scary and the villagers do not dare to come here. That's why Yui was surprised when she heard the sound of the horse.
Yui didn't expect anyone to come to this part of the forest, but she was curious about where this horse's neighing sound was coming from. Yui followed the sound and looked for the owner of the sound from behind the bush.
A young man with white hair was standing next to his horse. He had blood red eyes. Or not, his red eyes were a reflection of roses. His hair was white like a swan's feather and shone under the golden light of the sun. But his face was not fully clear because half of his face was covered by his hair. This young man looked very beautiful.
Yui: (He is very handsome... but that man is not from the village.)
While overwhelmed by the young man's beauty, Yui lost her balance and fell to the ground, causing him to hear her voice.
Young man: Who is there? Come out now.
After saying this, the young man turned to his horse and tried to keep it calm. He took out the silver knife and assumed a defensive posture. Yui was horrified to see the knife in his hand and was more afraid of revealing herself to him. He was a stranger and Yui wasn't sure if she could trust him or not.
Young man: If you don't come out, I will come to you.
Yui was very scared and was shaking. She didn't know what to do and whether to take the risk of revealing herself to her or not.

Chapter 2
…and the floors are some type of soil-your-pants brown. I know this for a fact. Last week, a guard threatened a new guy with castration and all hell broke loose...just like his bowels.
Imagine sitting at your computer to write, and the line that really wants to come out is this.
And an editor lets you.
Since public schools aren’t allowed to lean one way or the other, only private schools…
You’ve heard of private Catholic schools. Now get ready for… private Satanic schools.
My aunt Lina is my dad’s crazy twin sister who, I’ve been told, suffers from polyfused disorder, meaning the older spirit (supposedly) Fused to hers is strong enough to gain control of her body. When she isn’t acting like a giggly ten-year-old who speaks in the past tense, she works for A Look Beyond, a tour company owned by Myriad.
Sounds more like the people in this world are religious bigots who cover up people’s out of control mental illnesses by saying that they’re “possessed by an angel/devil”.
I’ve often wondered why she’s singular to Vans. Is she sleeping with him?
I’ve heard rumors about girls earning special privileges with their bodies. I’ve also heard about girls being threatened with harsher punishments if they refuse. Even the thought fills me with rage.
Again, the author could have written literally anything. And she actively CHOSE to write about a juvenile asylum in which the girls are basically being raped or turned into whores.
My dad is a senator in the House of Myriad, responsible for ensuring Myriad-friendly laws are passed and Troika-friendly laws aren’t.
Again, you might as well call them “Republicans” and “Democrats”, and this story wouldn’t change at all.
No matter what’s done to me in the future, I will hold out. I must. I’ll be released on my eighteenth birthday. Though my parents signed with Myriad before my conception, there was a special clause for the birth of a child.
When I came along, their contracts had to be renegotiated. Now their benefits are dependent on my decision. An incentive to raise me the “right” way.
If I haven’t signed with Myriad by the time I’m a legal adult, my parents will lose everything they love more than they ever loved me. Money, prestige. Homes. Cars. Boats. Not to mention the things they were promised in the Everlife.
That sounds like such an amazing deal. And also in no way like a combination cult and MLM. (Which, aren’t MLMs cults in their own way?)
TRIGGER WARNING: Suicide discussion
Suicide is expressly forbidden by both realms, and it can even render a contract null and void.
Not like I’m pro-suicide in general, but this seems like the perfect escape from those shitty contracts. Don’t want to go to either realm? Simply nullify the contract by offing yourself!
“Laborers are sent to protect the chosen and then, when the human reaches the Age of Accountability, they negotiate covenant terms and guide the human through the rest of Firstlife. With us, though, covenants are voided if the signer is coerced.”
So this entire time, we’ve been shown these literal children being tortured, abused, raped, simply so that they could sign. But yet, Bow is telling her that children being forced to sign is literally illegal.
MAKE UP YOUR GODDAMNED MINDS.
I would ask where the editor was, but I think we all know that there were none.
For some reason, as happiness buzzes in my veins, my gaze is drawn to New Guy.
He’s staring at me again.
Each of my pulse points leaps. Not knowing what else to do, I nod in acknowledgment
Oh look, it’s the love interest.
His surprised laughter follows me out of the cafeteria.
Chapter 2 summary: Ten fumes about what happened, and kind of takes it out on Bow. Bow, for her effort, is not daunted by the first roadblock, despite Ten basically telling her to fuck off.
The narration then pauses to meander through some more explanation about heaven and hell. (Until further notice, I refuse to call them the stupid names the author came up with.) It’s forbidden to talk about it in public schools, so the only information kids get is from their parents. Who are obviously biassed towards one end or the other. They have these “tours”, but they vary so wildly that the entire thing sounds like a joke.
The book then meanders through a tedious scene where some of the boys are making fun of Bow, before Ten goes to her morning “therapy” group. (I’m reluctant to use any sort of actual medical terminology here since, again, none of this sounds remotely legal by our standards.) There, Sloan makes an off-hand comment that some more guards are going to try and kill Ten again tonight. Ten explains to the readers that she killed the last guard who tried that.
Ten and Bow stay up that night, and end up fighting off four guards. This is mercifully glossed over. But after the fight, we have to endure more of what’s quickly becoming this book’s nonsensical conversation between Ten and whomever else is in the room with her. There’s probably a good reason why she’s in a mental hospital, NGL.
Six days pass without incident, which begins to worry Ten that something big is coming for her. Then, a new boy shows up, and Bow randomly hates him. I know that he’s the other love interest, but at the same time… From Ten’s perspective, Bow hates him simply because he exists. It’s kind of weird. Ten then talks some about the “Humans Against Realm Turmoil” or HART group, who are trying to stop these wars. But Heaven and Hell don’t give a shit about what you think; they only want soldiers who are dumb enough to follow orders.
Bow is still hung up over the unnamed guy, and asks for a distraction. She asks about Ten’s life from before. She mentions briefly that children are literally forced to sign when they turn 16. Instead of doing that, Ten stole her mom’s car and then got sent to the asylum the next day.
This quickly morphs into a discussion about Bow’s steadfast belief in Heaven that has never once wavered. Ten is honestly impressed with this, but it’s hard to say if that awe is because of how fucking dumb the entire thing sounds.
She then catches the new guy’s eye, and Bow asks if she’s interested in him. Ten gets angry, and rudely pushes the new guy over as she leaves the cafeteria.

What the actual FUCK?! (no. 1)
So apparently the show decided to paint Novyi Zem as Grisha-loving idyll.
Alina: “You're a Durast?“
Zemeni librarian: “Oh. Zemeni do not use such narrow terms. We are all "zowa". Blessed.“
Alina: “Oh, that's, um... That's lovely.“
Zemeni librarian: “Being Grisha is a wonderful thing. A beautiful thing. But we are lucky to be safe here in Novyi Zem. I feel for the Ravkan Grisha. May their Saints watch over them.“
SAFE IN NOVYI ZEM?! Is that why Jesper had to hide being Grisha?!
When he was a little boy, lying in his father’s fields, he’d discovered he could leach the color out of a jurda blossom petal by petal. One boring afternoon, he’d bleached a swear word into the western pasture in capital letters. His father had been furious, but he’d been scared too. He’d yelled himself hoarse chastising Jesper, and then Colm had just sat there, staring at him, big hands clasped around a mug of tea to keep them from shaking. At first, Jesper thought it was the swear his father was mad about, but that wasn’t it at all.
“Jes,” he’d said at last. “You must never do that again. Promise me. Your ma had the same gift. It can bring you only misery.”
...
There were secret lessons too. Sometimes, when they got home late, and she needed to get supper on, she’d boil the water without ever heating the stove, make bread rise just by looking at it. He’d seen her pull stains from clothes with a brush of her fingers, and she made her own gunpowder, extracting the saltpeter from a long-dry lake bed near where they lived. “Why pay for something I can make better myself?” she asked. “But we don’t mention this to Da, hmm?” When Jesper asked why, she’d just say, “Because he has enough to worry about, and I don’t like it when he worries about me.” But Da did worry, especially when one of his mother’s Zemeni friends came to the door looking for help or healing.
“You think the slavers can’t reach you here?” he’d asked one night, pacing back and forth in their cabin as Jesper huddled in his blankets, pretending to sleep so that he could listen. “If word gets out there’s a Grisha living here—”
Crooked Kingdom Chapter 16
... safe in Novyi Zem? Well yes, unless you’re kidnapped by Kerch slavers and sold to *checks notes* Fjerdan witchhunters, Shu experimenters or just other Kerch to use you however they please...
Most rogue Grisha ended up in Novyi Zem. Aside from Ravka, it was the only place where they didn’t have to fear being experimented on by Shu doctors or burned by Fjerdan witchhunters. Even so, they had to be cautious about displaying their power. Grisha were valued slaves, and less scrupulous Kerch traders were known to round them up and sell them in secret auctions.
These were the very threats that had led so many Grisha to take refuge in Ravka and join the Second Army in the first place. But the rogues thought differently. For them, a life spent looking over their shoulders and moving from one place to the next to avoid discovery was preferable to a life in service to the Darkling and the Ravkan King. It was a choice I understood.
