Basic Info For Unrivaled Tournament Series.
We are a little over a month until Unrivaled Tournament Series begins, and things are starting to pick up. Games are beginning to be announced, and new surprises are popping up weekly. I was trying to decide which I should talk about first. Important info, crash course of games, or even theories about remaining questions. I decided to start with we should solidify important info first. On that note, here’s some important information you should know about Unrivaled T.S.
How The Tournament Works
The tournament goes in three waves. The first part is known as Satellites. These small-scale events happen at Friendly Local Game Stores (FLGS) during the month of April. It is here that you can compete to qualify for the finals in one of 8 games. NOTE! I have a gut feeling that there might be one more game introduced, but only time will tell. The current 8 games are….
1. King Domino
2. Evolution
3. The Red Dragon Inn
4. Champions of Midgard
5. Villagers and Villains
6. Nevermore
7. Klask
8. Onitama
The games used this season are all diverse, and YOU will need to win at this level to play your game in the finals. If you fail here you can also qualify at events known as Super Satellites. These larger scale events will happen after satellites at conventions and other locations. Winning here will also qualify you for the finals. It is also here that you have to chance to win other cool things, and meet some awesome people.
Finally, if you qualify for the finals, you will play in Chicago. This will happen in August, and if you make it to the final table here then you will walk away with cash, prizes, bragging rights, and a sweet ring. THIS is your journey to gaming greatness.
This Is Not A Free Trip
Ok, this one goes out to all my Unrivaled Vets. Last year qualifying for the finals at any level, also allowed you to get the trip covered. This year you are not so fortunate. If you qualify in Satellites they will not cover the trip. In order to get any help with the trip you will need to win at Super Satellites. Winning there will provide you with a $600 voucher to help cover travel expenses. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know for me this will only cover about half of my trip at best. This does not mean that travel is officially out of reach. This just means you either gotta earn it, or you’ll just have to get creative. I know I’m planning on forming a group, so that we can work together to cover some expenses. Sharing hotel rooms, carpool, blah, blah, blah.
Snooping Pays Off! How To Keep Informed.
The site has been opened for the past few weeks, and since it’s opening the site has evolved to provide more info. Sometimes you just need to dig a little. Let’s start with the obvious. One big way to keep informed is to scour the website (www.unrivaled.com). Every week they are adding more, and more info to the site. Some of it is blatantly shown through blog posts, and updates to the FAQ, while some of it is hidden until announced. An example of this would be King Domino. Upon opening the website there was no info on games to be played this year. When you take some time to look through the site you will find THIS.
Even more interesting if you click the picture it will take you to the developers site to order the game! It was a few weeks later when the games were announced, and King Domino was the first on the list. In short, snooping pays off. Sometimes it leads to dead ends, but more times than not it’s always promising. This leads to Social Media! They are super active on Twitter, and talking to them can sometimes lead to other promising info. This is how I confirmed my King Domino theory. When I made a post about it, Unrivaled had some fun and chose to plead the fifth though gifs. You will also find that most of the updates to the website are announced through social media.
Finally (if you really want clarification) you can actually call/message Unrivaled. They are really good at communicating with people, and it was really cool to have staff recognize my name and voice from times I called them about questions.
I think that is enough to get you started. Know that it is my plan to do frequent posts about the games, and information about Unrivaled. Next on my hitlist is to do a crash course on some of the games. If you have any other questions/challenges you want me to tackle feel free to message me. Until next time though I’m signing off!

Japan on a budget: readers travel tips

Japan on a budget: readers travel tips
The perception that Japan is an expensive destination is challenged by our tipsters, who find 70p sushi delivered by robot, cheap internal flights, all-you-can-drink-deals and friendly hostels
Winning tip: Art and yurts, Naoshima
Naoshima, the jewel of Japans art islands and an easy one-hour train journey from Kyoto or Osaka, has museums ranging from a gallery hotel to art installations. Free buses take you around the art locations and to an amazing art-filled sento bathhouse (4.40), complete with full-size elephant sculptures overlooking the baths. Staying in the Benesse Foundations hotels is very pricey (from 250) but there is a fantastic alternative a very short walk from the key art sites and beautiful: Tsutsuji-sos yurts (25-30 per person per night). They are private, traditional Mongolian tents with proper beds. Pat Kirby
E-bikes in Takayama
Photograph: Hanah
A tour on e-bikes of the Japanese Alps countryside around Takayama with Daisuke, the tour guide, for just 42 per head, was the highlight of our holiday. We started from JR Hida-Hagiwara station and took in historic villages to start with then a hidden valley off the tourist trail, the e-bikes making light work of the hills. There were surprises along the way such as a traditional Japanese lunch (included in the price) and coffee on the river in the middle of nowhere, and all for a reasonable price. The 26km/six-hour route and its views were incredible. Hanah

Readers’ tips competition: send a tip for a chance to win a 200 voucher
Show Hide
Every week we ask our readers for recommendations from their travels. A selection of tips will be featured online and may appear in print, and the best entry each week (as chosen by Tom Hall of Lonely Planet) wins a 200 voucher from hotels.com. Friendly hostel, Nagano
Photograph: 1166 backpackers Nagano
One of the best hostels Ive stayed in was 1166 Backpackers in Nagano, run by a lovely woman named Orie who makes everyone feel at home. She runs regular events in the hostel communal areas, such as sake tasting. Beds are about 20 a night. Its in the Monzen district of Nagano, within easily walking distance of Zenkoji temple. Its well-placed for day trips to nearby amazing Matsumoto Castle or Snow Monkey Park. Samuel Parker
Alpine honeymoon bliss
Oshi Ryokan, Nagano
To get a complete contrast from city life, I suggest a stay at the Oshi Ryokan in Naganos Japanese Alps. Mr Oshi (a Shinto priest who looks after the nearby temples) will take you to the temple at the crack of dawn an incredible experience. Mrs Oshi also cooked us what was probably the most amazing meal we had in Japan each dish was a work of art and it was so special having the experience in their home, rather than a restaurant. We were on our honeymoon and the lovely couple even offered to let us try on their own wedding kimonos and take photos. Double from 65 B&B, about 120 with dinner, oshiryokan.com/en-gb Lucie Johnson
Subtropical beaches, Yaeyama Islands
Kabira bay, Ishigaki island. Photograph: Ippei Naoi/Getty Images
For a 25 return flight from Naha (on Okinawa) to Ishigaki, you can experience the subtropical climate and unspoilt beaches of Japans Yaeyama Islands. Stay at Shiraho Friends House (12 a night in shared gender-specific rooms). Almost every review of this hostel praises its owner, Hiro; he really is amazingly helpful without being overbearing. The island is great for swimming and leisurely walks along the palm groves. In the evening you can head to a bar, see night-blooming flowers, or go to a free viewing at the observatory. Isabella Dmochowska
Day trip from Tokyo
At the foot of 600-metre Mount Takao, a great day hike within the Tokyo city bounds, is the tucked-away Keio Takaosan Onsen. With a mix of indoor and outdoor (rotenburo) baths of various water temperatures, it is the perfect place to restore sore muscles, with all the vibe of a mountain ryokan (traditional inn) for a fraction of the price:6.70 for adults and no time limit. You just need to bring your own towel. The onsen is next to Takaosanguchi station on the Keio line. Sarah Liang
Campervan savings
You can save thousands of yen by hiring a campervan from japancampers.com. Its near Narita airport, and runs a pick-up service from Narita station, so you can be mobile within a few hours of arriving. The campers start at 6,000 a day (40), less than youd pay for a hotel room, and come with camping equipment. The staff are helpful, bilingual and just a phone call away if you run into difficulties. It is perfectly legal to sleep in your van anywhere you stop, giving you the freedom to roam around the worlds safest country, and the Japanese baths (sentos) are on hand for your daily scrub. Dom
All you can eat and drink, Tokyo
An izakaya in Tokyo. Photograph: Alamy
Instead of drinking in western-style bars, which can be very expensive, go to a typical izakaya such as Kin no Kura in Shinjuku, Tokyo, where Id suggest a nomihodai option all you can drink for a set time and set price. Pay around 17 for 2-3 hours of uninterrupted drinking! Order from a tablet on the table, and the server will announce briskly: Hai dozo! (Go ahead). Its a great, social place too ideal for playing card games. The range of drinks include beer on tap, highballs and sake. You can also get a tabehodai (all you can eat option in izakayas). 1-16-6 Kabukicho Darren
Excellent hostel, Tokyo
Kaisu Hostel
The Kaisu Hostel (6-13-5 Akasaka) in Minato is a short walk from Roppongi but quiet enough to have a good nights sleep in its shared rooms with pods. Its spotless like almost all Japanese hotels and serves great beer in the stylish bar area; and at around 20 a night it was great value. It has a female-only shared room too, with 10 pods. Its a short walk to an izakaya called Motsusen (lunch 3.40, dinner 19 and all-you-can-drink menu, 9-2 Kabutocho) where you can rub shoulders with salarymen and eat until you cant move. Ben
Bathtime, Tokyo
Photograph: Karen Kasmauski/Getty Images
I accidentally miscalculated how much cash to bring (my hotel gave price per night rather than the total of all three nights and I was careless in checking) and on my last day in Tokyo I was broke … I took myself to a sento for the afternoon for the equivalent of 3. I spent a couple of hours in there, sheltering from the 38C heat, getting clean after a sweaty day stomping the streets and having a cultural experience at the same time. It was one of the highlights of my Japan trip because, as well as being a sucker for a spa, it was great to feel SO comfortable strutting about naked because nobody bats an eyelid. Best three quid I ever spent. Gaby
Conveyor belt sushi chain
Photograph: Alamy
If you want to try conveyor belt sushi, Genki Sushi, with branches from Hokkaido down to Kyushu, is a great choice. Most of its dishes only cost 70p and you can order your food via multilingual touch screens. If youre with kids, they are going to love being able to order their own food, as well as the little robot trains that deliver your order to your seat. We visited the Shibuya branch in Tokyo and it was wonderful, but later on we saw the dinner queue stretching into the street, so best get there early. Bori Kiss

Well….we have only gone and won £100k on a scratchcard!!!!
That’s right…ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND smackaroonies!
Lynne went out yesterday morning to drop Lily-Belle at school and popped into the local shop for ‘essentials’. As she queued she thought, ‘do you know what, if that couple down the road can win £115 million, surely we might get lucky and win a few quid that could pay for our next holiday’. A few scratches later, winner winner chicken dinner…£100k…we’re still letting it all sink in! Madness!
Now, some of our readers already know that Mummy is the budget Queen but lover of all things holidays! Not content with the cold-cash making a cosy home in our bank account, she has come to the conclusion that life is far too short and has decided to blow the lot on seeing those places that we have dreamed of for so long. After a long night checking out villas on Clickstay, we now have our TOP 10 TRAVEL GOALS 2019 plans in place.
So here goes, our TOP 10 TRAVEL GOALS 2019…..excited!
February
It’s the middle of winter here on the island of Ireland and snow has fallen across the province, so we’ve decided the first trip of 2019 should be to somewhere warm, a place where we can rid ourselves of our pasty white skin…Australia it is then. Our first trip will take us to the beautiful town of Cairns to see one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World; the Great Barrier Reef! Sea Temple 205 Palm Grove looks stunning and the girls are going to love the pool. Mummy is looking forward to some R&R in the onsite Spa, and daddy, well…I’m just hoping to join up the freckles to get a ‘ginger’ tan!
Sea Temple 205 Palm Grove: click to view Cost: very reasonable at £3,857 dingo dollars.
March
March 2019 is a BIG month in the Callaghan household; it’s Mummy’s big 4 0 birthday and also our 15th wedding anniversary! We spent our honeymoon in the Maldives so the beautiful Olana Beachfront Apartment that we have chosen is right on the beach in the Black River region of Mauritius. Perfect location to explore the beautiful Black River Gorges National Park. There are so many wonderful things to do on the island but we are especially looking forward to snorkelling in the crystal clear water and watching the dolphins go by whilst eating breakfast!
Olana Beachfront Apartment: click to view Cost: prepare to be amazed…only £3,108 which is equivalent to a large bucket of sea pearls.
April
It’s still cold on the island of Ireland so we are sticking with a warm sunny destination. Well, why not, we have just won £100k on the lottery! Although we love our holidays, neither of us have done the backpacking craze, and in all honesty, we are not about to start! Thailand is one of those places loved by backpackers so we thought we must pay it a visit! Booking a Villa in Koh Samui seems to be very popular and now we can see why! Absolutely stunning, and we’re sure you’ll agree that the Exclusive Five Bed Beach Front Villa on Koh Samui is also absolutely stunning too! What are you planning on seeing and doing I hear you ask…SO MUCH! Swim with turtles at Koh Tao, check out the Big Buddha shrine and take in the spectacular Namuang Waterfall.
Exclusive Five Bed Beach Front Villa on Koh Samui: click to view Cost: definitely not for budget conscious backpackers, £17,412. That’s a lot of wonga!
May
For those of you who follow our blog, you will know that we amor Italy and find it impossible to stay away. Winning so much money on the lottery is never going to change that! Last year we stayed in a fantastic campsite in Tuscany. We also spent an afternoon in the beautiful city of Florence which was far too short. I remember driving up to Piazza Michaelangelo and going past the most amazing houses so we thought, ‘why don’t we stay somewhere like that’. Not the cheapest but how amazing does this Florence Dream Villa look…Mummy is really hoping it comes with a live-in Chef to make her favourite Penne Arrabiatta..don’t ask! The ‘Penne Arrabiatta’ is a whole post by itself!
Florence Dream Villa: click to view Cost: not campsite rates at a whopping £18,475
July
As parents we try our best to not have the girls miss school so we plan on making the most of the 2019 summer holidays! The girls have always wanted to visit Disney so we’ve seen that there’s a great Villa To Rent In Four Corners, Florida. It’s my (non-disclosed age) birthday on the 1st and of course Independence Day is on the 4th July, so I’m sure it will be a truly memorable holiday. Disney is definitely on the ‘visit’ list and we also need to head over to Clearwater Marine Aquarium to see Winter from Dolphin Tale. Lily-Belles ultimate dream is to swim with rescued dolphins Winter and Hope!
Villa To Rent In Four Corners, Florida: click to view Cost: cheap(ish) at £5,232, we aren’t going to spend much time here apart from chilling in the pool.
This next trip isn’t terribly exciting but we have been asking Mummy’s parents to have a holiday with us and the girls for quite some time. Mummy really doesn’t understand why they don’t want to travel with us; but if I was them, I wouldn’t want to travel with us either! The Callaghan Posse are ALWAYS late, The Maclaine Crew are ALWAYS early! And who needs the added stress of being late when on holidays (Lynne, she thrives on it). Anyway, her Dad finally agreed that we would all go on a short holiday to Scotland! If we are going to Scotland I have decided that we should become King and Queen in a Timeless Castle. What do you think of this beautiful Scottish Castle located in the Scottish Borders? Perfect for us all to have our own space; if you know what I mean, and for Father-in-Law to enjoy the rolling hills and local heritage.
Timeless Castle: click to view Cost: this trip will empty the sporran of £8,567 but I’m certain it’ll gain me a few Brownie points!
August
Historically, most August’s in Ireland the weather is shocking and wet! Irish summer is normally over before it has even begun, so we have decided that we will probably need to catch a few rays after our trip to bonnie Scotland! Greece is a country that we have never been to; it looks absolutely stunning in photos and we love the beautiful white washed villas. Oh yes, we are also very fond of falafel, so where better than Greece to get the authentic deal! As we are not expecting for the ‘in-laws’ to have had a change of heart about travelling with us after their Scottish stay, a little villa for four is all that is require.d or desired. The Zephyros Guesthouse in Santorini looks perfect with it’s white-washed walls and tiled terraces. We especially love the outdoor seating area and I think you will agree that it is definitely ‘insta-worthy’. In a word…wow!
Zephyros Guesthouse: click to view Cost: £6,270 I’m getting seriously concerned about what is left in the ‘scratchcard’ money pot!
Our Top 10 Travel Goals 2019 list would not be complete if we didn’t live it up in the South of France. The town of Molleges is calling to us and we have totally fallen in love with this rustic villa named Water Lily House. Picture perfect! This ‘gorgeous gaff’ is just how we would expect a dreamy French villa to look. Astonishing and just perfect to relax in before the start of the new school term. The grounds are like something from a 1930s movie and have you seen the cooker…not that I/we plan on cooking! Lily-Belle and Matilda can’t wait to take a dip in the pool and tackle the climbing frame. No trip to the South of France would be the same without ‘rubbing shoulders’ with the rich and famous in Saint-Tropez…don’t mind if we do!
Water Lily House: click to view Cost: £14,561, well it is the South of France. Not known for cheapy-cheapy!
December
I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of Christmas or New Year. Personally I would prefer to go away for 2 weeks at this time and come home when it’s all over and normality has returned to the home. Mummy always refuses to holiday at this time due to the excessive cost. There’s no excuse now, we’ve just won mega-bucks on a scratchcard. Val d’Isere here we come. This delightfully characteristic French ski chalet is what dreams are made of; just look at those views!
Chalet Mont Blanc: click to view Cost: £18,733 so I don’t think Santa will be coming this year….he’s skint!
Last, but by no means least, New Years Eve in (drum roll please…drrrrrrr) NEW YORK CITY! What better way to end 2019, fabulous year of travel; than by ringing in the New Year in Times Square. There are no villas in NYC but we have are really lucky to have found this Gorgeous 2 Bedroom Duplex In Manhattan. A lovely apartment that is centrally located. There will be lots of clothes shopping of course; not by Mummy, but me, one can never have too many shoes you know…that is if we have a penny left in the pot!!
Gorgeous 2 Bedroom Duplex In Manhattan: click to view Cost: Saving for the shoe shopping spree so £3,093 all in…bargain!
Ok, if you’ve got this far we have a HUGE CONFESSION to make…….
….we haven’t actually won the £100k on a scratchcard…fooled ya! This post is our entry into the Clickstay Travel Blogger Competition for the chance to win a £600 Clickstay™ voucher!
We apologise for trying to pull the wool over your eyes, harmless fun, but we also hope you enjoyed reading our Top 10 Travel Goals 2019 post. Rest assured, if we do win £100k or more, then these ‘fantasy’ trips will become a reality. If you tally up above, these trips come to £99,308… a little left over for Daddy to buy shoes in New York City. Win a £100k on a scratchcard…if only…in our dreams!
Around the World In 18 Years would really appreciate your VOTE for us to be in with the chance of winning a £600 holiday voucher from Clickstay. It’s not going to pay for that stunning Italian Chateau or the beachside villa in Koh Samui, but out of this world accommodation is not what is important to us for our holidays. What is? Spending quality time together as a family when we travel!

Hanah

For a 25 return flight from Naha (on Okinawa) to Ishigaki, you can experience the subtropical climate and unspoilt beaches of Japans Yaeyama Islands. Stay at Shiraho Friends House (12 a night in shared gender-specific rooms). Almost every review of this hostel praises its owner, Hiro; he really is amazingly helpful without being overbearing. The island is great for swimming and leisurely walks along the palm groves. In the evening you can head to a bar, see night-blooming flowers, or go to a free viewing at the observatory.
Bori Kiss
