I remember being in front of the computer at my parents' (en la habitacion de leer) with my siblings trying to figure out the lyrics to this song (which it wasn't that hard, since the video is verbatim what he sings)

Handful of years back I remembered and wondered about Chad Vangaalen, whose album Infiniheart was a favorite for a time. What I found was this video he animated for Andy Shauf:

On first listen its bittersweet but romantic, but on repetition and especially with the video illustrating the tension in the lyrics, the image of the situation becomes more strange and sour. After an obsession with this song, I went through much of his discography on repeat, track by track, and my collection of his albums just keeps increasing. For a few weeks I've been listening to his most recent release, Norm, basking in the warm and blissful vibes.

I'm not really someone who listens to lyrics so it takes me about this long to start understanding what is even being said, and once again this comforting beauty floats over the surface of what slowly and quietly is unfolding to me as a nightmare. As I've been starting to piece this together, I found out that there were once again animated videos. Catch Your Eye's video (Mary Vertulfo) captures the tired, sweet, mundane feeling. Like the lyrics, the subtle ending is easy to overlook.

But Telephone also gets its own video. (cw dead insects, stalking)

The whiplash is bringing me back to how as a teen i'd listen over and over to Sufjan Steven's "John Wayne Gacy Jr" not knowing the real story behind the name and lyrics. The cozy, dreamlike energy and the sinister narrative are melting together. The feelings I have are like oil and water, both there simultaneously but distinct and unable to blend.

The story continues through the entire album of Norm. I don't really have any insight or deeper thoughts, i'm just throwing this into the void in case anyone wants to enter this very strange space and be simultaneously soothed and disturbed with me.
