Yuri!!! on Life, official guidebook, Making of figure skating scenes

Part 5.

Not all cameras used to take the footage were placed at a fixed position. Figure skating coach, Odagaki Kanako, put her skating shoes on, got on the ice and holding a handheld camera, she filmed the choreography, following Miyamoto, as he skated. In case of real-life competition or ice show, it is certainly impossible to film the skaters from such a close distance. This unique angle was added to present the characters' performances with intensity, that is possible only in animation.

In addition, bearing in mind that the footage would be used as a base for animation, the choice of clothes, that Miyamoto wore when on the ice, was also very well thought-through. To make the movements well-visible on the white background of the ice rink, the basis was to wear all black, but because in case of fast movements, it was difficult to tell left and right leg apart, Miyamoto put duct tape on one of his legs. When skating some of the programs, it was necessary to wear loose outerwear to show how the costume would flow in the wind.

Of course, the costumes were original, as well, and ordered from a professional costume designer. The person responsible for costume design was Chacott's Sagiri Yuko, who has been creating costumes for such skaters as Oda Nobunari for long years - she is a real expert with a throughout knowledge of figure skating costumes. The costumes were designed with such precision, that it is possible to sew the real thing anytime - each was matched to the skater's personality and program, while also making sure that the skater's movements aren't hindered when skating, and the costume looks good on the ice. Even the kinds of fabrics and other materials that are used in the design, and the way the costume can be put on and taken off were taken into consideration.

Nott gives me the vibes of my one friend who would get the hardest shoe Grishko made and wear it until the box was as soft as a regular ass ballet shoe and only ended up buying like 1 pair a year, it was truly insane I don't know how she did it. But I don't know if the same is true for Veth and I don't know what else I would give her if not Grishko. Possibly some real obscure ass brand like Chacotts. And ofc Jester. My heart says Gaynors. And maybe that's just bc I personally hate Freeds. But it feels right to me in my soul. -- The way colors are used in the OP animation is very cool!

Otsuka: When we listened to the demo tape of the OP song, Director Yamamoto got incredibly excited, because of how good the song and Dean Fujioka's beautiful voice was, and she announced to us that the OP would be all new figure skating scenes. To be honest, I personally thought that the skating scenes in the main story took us so much time and effort, that it didn't seem very likely that we could 'make all these characters dance in the opening animation, too?!', but... (laugh) The result is that opening, that certainly is very impressive, isn't it? From episode 1. onward, the opening will be gradually upgraded and you should definitely pay attention to that, too. If I have to guess, it will be ungraded until the Director is satisfied with the final version (laugh).

-- I'll look forward to it! The ending was very stylish, too - the Instagram-like look of it. Was that also Director Yamamoto's idea?

Otsuka: Yes, it was her idea. She often checks figure skaters' Instagram accounts, and I think that she likes seeing them having fun (laugh). I think that's the reason, why she picked up scenes from skaters' everyday life and included them in the ending animation.

-- I see! The choreography was created by Miyamoto Kenji-san, and the costumes were designed by Chacott - an assembly of people actually involved in figure skating. How was the decision to engage them in the project made?

Otsuka: It was all Director Yamamoto's idea. In the past, when she created a short figure skating movie 'ENDLESS NIGHT' for Japan Anima(tor)'s Exhibition, a short-length animation project, the choreography was created for her by Miyamoto-sensei. I think that, because of that connection, Miyamoto-sensei agreed to get involved in Yuri!!! project. You can say that we are now making a good use of the know-how that Director Yamamoto learned working on 'ENDLESS NIGHT'.
