Creature Design Elective!!

The course that was basically 3h of nerding about creatures we think are really cool, and 30 min of teaching material. Nothing wrong with that, I loved it!

I had two concepts i wanted to make. The Weasel Bear, because I wanted to make something big and fluffy and made for the arctic, or the Crystal Newt, which started as a glowing newt that i was pretty sure i saw in a cave tour when i was a child but apparently they don‘t exist.

In the end the crystal newt won, being the more interesting looking design of the two. Small lizard with no thoughts is just always a good concept.

Inktober Day 7 - Blind

Splitting inktober 3 ways again this year with the Weird Eye Collective on instagram

1922. Geologists explore a cave system under the ancient ruins of Babylon (Kingdom of Iraq) finding a massive stone structure. It appears to have been worshipped in some way by the ancient Mesopotamians. Carvings in the cave wall associate it with Humbaba, a mythological demon.

The carvings tell the story of the stone giant waking up after something they did angered it. It appears to be some sort of warning, perhaps a metaphor of the decaying Babylonian empire in the XVI century BC.

Near the city, the group of geologists documented finding very large indentations in the ground. Convinced that the creature was real and these were its footsteps, they never released the location of the cave structure. It has not been found again to this day.

I based Brainy-as-a-bat off of the Eastern Red Bat. Clumsy-as-a-dog is just a big fluffy mutt.

The Waters Inside - so, I became briefly obsessed with caves with past week. It started with learning about the Devil’s Hole pupfish, an extraordinary species which I found some great informative YouTube videos on. Then I moved on to a YouTube documentary on the filming for “Ancient Caves” in Devil’s Hole Cave (different from the Devil’s Hole itself). Then I watched a bunch of videos about caving gone wrong. I think I’ve mostly gotten it out of my system, but I had to make some cave art, so here you go!

Excerpt from chapter 1: The two unlikely friends sat in companionable silence for a while dwelling each on their own thoughts and listening to the soft snoring of their sleeping companions and the quiet crackling of the fire. Then there were other sounds. At first an almost imperceptible shuffling like a blanket dragged across the floor. As the noise came closer it became more distinct, a soft tapping of furry paws on stone. A dozen paws at least, and not tiny ones. Without making a sound the Witcher reached for his sword. Maybe the creatures had not noticed them yet and would just pass by their little side cavern? But no such luck. Soon Geralt and Regis could see the glow of one pair of huge, pale eyes in the entrance. Then two. Three. Finally there was a whole group of creatures, seven or eight of varying height, maybe more behind them. They kept standing there, not moving, not making a sound. Geralt and Regis did likewise. Even with their enhanced night vision they could only make out vague, furry shapes against the glow of their fire. And the eyes. Now the creatures started to whisper, first very quietly, then increasing in volume, a murmur turning into an agitated chatter of squeaking, babbling, puffing and rumbling noises. They seemed to argue about something in a language that did not resemble any human one, nor any other language the Witcher had heard. They still did not move.

Milva, however, began to stir, woken up by the strange noise. Cahir, next to her, too. Only Angoulême was still fast asleep oblivious of the possible threat the company was facing. Geralt motioned his comrades to keep quiet and not move. Then, as suddenly as it had started, the chatter subsided and one of the creatures, the biggest one, slowly entered the cave and shuffled toward the fire. Cahir noiselessly inched his hand closer to where his sword lay ready to jump up the second the Witcher, who had grabbed his sword more tightly, gave the signal to fight. Milva did likewise with her bow, her eyes glued to the mysterious being that was advancing toward them ...

CAVE CREATURE

What’s this? Another Non-MSPA, So soon after the last two? Also, the first year since 2017 to have atleast 3 NON-MSPA Fanadventures???????? Insane. I guess that makes sense, though. 2021 was the year that everybody wanted to have a break from Homestuck properties, so just like in 2017 when people were still reeling from the ending of Homestuck, in 2021 it also felt like Homestuck stuff was truly dead. And since nobody wants to read Homestuck stuff anymore, you get to have these neat other fanadventures that might not have gotten that much traction in the first place. Or maybe there’s some other variable that I’m not noticing that accounts for why there was only *6* Fanadventures that were non-MSPA related on my Spreadsheet from 2018-2020. But whatever. CAVE CREATURE TIME!

I love how deliberately monochrome everything is (no, not that Monochrome). Stuff like a limited pallet goes a long way into sucking me into the story. The UI buttons for “Favourite” and “RSS Feed” also have the same monochrome treatment which is a really neat detail to me.

Okay so I literally had nothing else to say about it but I do like the weird antics of this strange little fluffy cave creature, and I have that same “awwww really?” feeling about having to stop reading this, so I would say that this Fanadventure successfully wormed its way into my cavernous heart. Just a classic Fanadventure in the Classic Fanadventure style. Cool!

A creature concept of mine.

Basically there exists a giant cave/maze/catacomb that is filled with all sorts of horrors and is impossible to map for most.

The only people who can navigate the tunnels are ones like this dude. Cave Creatures is the only name I have for them now lol.

They have tattoos that seem to be maps, usually they’ll have some sort of lantern and/or staff, and have all sorts of trinkets and jewelry on them and their staffs.

Just like their home they are hard to predict. Sometimes they will help travelers get around or they’ll be the monster that kills them.
