how many versions of cats were released on cd? I have the obc and olc versions so I was wondering if you knew what other versions there were, and if possible where to find them :D many thanks!
Hello Anon,
There are eighteen cast recordings:
Original London 1981 (both 2CD full recording and 1CD highlights)
Original Broadway 1982 (both 2CD full recording and 1CD highlights)
Vienna 1983 (1CD highlights)
Budapest 1984 (1CD highlights)*
Australia (Sydney) 1985 (2CD full recording)
Japan (Osaka) 1985 (2CD full recording)
Hamburg 1986 (2CD full recording)
Amsterdam 1987 (1CD highlights)
Paris 1989 (2CD full recording)
Japan (Nagoya) 1989 (2CD full recording)
Mexico 1991 (1CD highlights)
Warsaw 2004 (1CD highlights)*
Prague 2004 (1CD highlights)*
Dutch Tour 2006 (1CD highlights)
Italian Tour 2009 (1CD highlights)*
Japan (Tokyo) 2019 (2CD full recording)
2019 Movie (1CD highlights)
Vienna Revival 2021 (2CD full recording)
*Non-replica production, if that matters
In addition, there are a number of promo CDs that include a handful of tracks from the casts at the time of release:
Hamburg 1996 (3 track promo, assuming audio taken from 1986 cast recording)
Japan (Tokyo) 1996 (3 track promo)
CATS 1998 Elaine Paige (3 track promo; 'Memory' included, and two other non-CATS songs)
Japan (Osaka) 2001 (4 track promo)
Madrid 2003 (1 track 'Memory' promo)
Moscow 2005 (8 track promo?, two versions; both have 4 instrumental tracks)
Dutch Tour 2006 (3 track promo, audio from 2006 cast recording)
German Tent Tour 2011 (3 track promo)
Of everything listed above, the only ones I do not own are the Madrid 2003 'Memory' promo, Prague 2004 cast recording (a very rare CD that was scrapped before moving to production, only test/promo copies exist), and Moscow 2005 (another very rare promo release, only found with the press packages). Who knows if I can ever get my hands on them.
In terms of where to find them, the OLC, OBC, and Vienna 1983 are still being produced today and can be easily found new online, through Amazon or eBay (or better yet, in-person at your local music store!), and so is the Budapest 1984 CD as well (at least from what I can tell, it is always readily available brand new from Hungary). The 1989 and 2019 Japanese cast recordings are also still readily available brand new from Japan through the Shiki webstore. The 2019 movie highlights is also very easy to find, considering it just was released. The Vienna 2021 recording is still available from the label's website (at 45% right now!), but they only ship within Europe.
All the others can be found second-hand to varying degrees of ease online (i.e., eBay). The 1980s cast recordings are not too difficult, with Hamburg being fairly easily found, but as you start moving into lesser known (and shorter running) productions, it becomes more difficult to find them. Some are extremely uncommon, and I purchased the only copy I have even seen go for sale throughout the years, and I am still waiting for the chance to get the few I do not have.
Happy hunting to you, Anon!

🎶 🎬 💛 for the Cats ask game :o3
hi hello!!!! sorry this took so long 😭😭😭
🎶. Who’s your favorite ensemble cat and why?:
I’m fully in love with Jemima, but I don’t really count her as fully ensemble, just because of her multiple solos, and because of that, Pouncival is my favorite ensemble cat :)
He’s just the silliest ever, and I’m 100% obsessed. I love the way he’s hanging with the girls in skimbelshanks (the girls and pouncival™️), and me and my friends had a running joke for a while that was literally just iterations of “the girls, the gays, and pouncival <3”
🎬. What’s your favorite moment from the show?:
Moments of Happiness, 1998, specifically Jemima’s solo. It’s so perfect, ethereal, emotional, and whimsical. I can play it on the piano, and I can sing it :] it also makes me cry
Rapidfire a couple of moments from other shows:
Tecklenburg 2015: Bombalurina’s deliver of
“Das Gewächshaus ist zerschlagen”
in Macavity drives me so completely insane. The way she growls zerschlagen makes me so jealous, I WISH my voice had that sort of power.
Madrid 2003: Jemima again. Surprise! This time her solo in the middle of Memory, specifically, the way her actress sings the final “endless masquerading” line. It sounds so strong and gorgeous, I could rant about it forever
Vienna 2019: in the 2021 Ronacher album on Spotify, (WHEN I FIGURED OUT THAT ALBUM WAS VIENNA I FREAKED THE FUCK OUT. ITS SO CRAZY), the white cat solo, and Misto’s subsequent section sound really nice, I’m a big fan
💛. What’s your favorite familial ship?:
I’m not entirely sure what this means, but I’m a huge fan of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer as siblings, PLUS Electra as their kid sister. I came up with it once and I think it’s super cute :D
Monochromatic siblings are a must, they’re also very special to me, along with Jennyanydots and Skimbleshanks as brother and sister :)
#asks!!!!!!!#THANK YOU SO MUCH HUGGING YOU TIGHTLY#I decided to listen to my compilation of my favorite cats songs while writing this out and man. it’s a good show#ALSO my father dropped one of the most interesting takes on cats that I’ve ever heard last night. just dropped it out of the blue.#maybe I’ll post it someday but I’m pretty sure he’s got it pretty locked down actually#ANYHOW I MISSED YOU CATS *cries*#thanks for giving me the opportunity to yap about this stuff :)))#guys I’m so 100% serious if any of you ever want to hear far too many opinions on the German versions of cats#I am here and ready I love German cats more than I love myself#cats the musical#cats musical#pouncival cats#im serious though when i figured out that 2021 katze was the same as Vienna 2019 i almost exploded with excitement

AAAH THE SKIMBLESHOOS I LOVE HIM
I would like to bring your attention to:
✨💖✨ Skimbleshanks keeping Jemima from touching the Sad Sad Garbage Lady ✨💖✨
This is a 7/10 Skimbleshoo. He let her get real close to touching the Lady, looks like he's gonna lead her away after, solid push of the touchy hand. Jemima does react dramatic af to this shoo. This is a solid base-level Skimbleshoo we should all respect
This is a 5/10 Skimbleshoo. Baby just wants to stop the violence :( why are your pro-bullying skimble?? (plus 5 points for just picking her up and moving her away like a fat nope)
The gentleness! Doesn't even touch her! Just sticks an arm out! What a gentle guide away from the Lady! Moves between her in the Lady without any violence! THE LITTLE SIT COMMAND WAAAAAH 9/10 SKIMBLESHOO! AHHHH! THE SKIMBLESHOO THAT MADE ME LOVE THE SKIMBLESHOO (the leg tent after 😫)
See what happens when you are gentle with baby? Look at the eye contact! Skimble says "you know better tsk tsk" and Jem is like "u rite :) I go" 8.5/10 Skimbleshoo built on love and trust~
Skimble here shows a variety of options and methods. I like the "no further sweetheart" shoulder grab and the divide-and-conquer. Good way to separate Jemima from strangers. This Skimbleshoo is a 8.7/10, kind and paternal.
(🥺 omg nvm I'm so sorry, plus 50 points, 100! 10/10 Skimbleshoo... So soft...)
Skimble... SKIMBLE! THIS IS BULLYING!! THATS A CHILD!!! YOU CANT BODYSLAM A CHILD!!!!
...
10/10

Sorting Misto Portrayals Into Categories Because I Do This With Literally Everything wtf
So, most Mistos can be placed in six vague groups
Showman Misto:
Sings a lot Takes charge of his own number early on Memorable and fun to watch, but lacking an arc Example: Timothy Scott (Original Broadway Cast)
Tugger’s BF Misto:
Confident when backed up by Tugger Doesn’t have the usual disdain for Tugger Seriously, his character revolves around Tugger Example: Ricky Ubeda (Broadway Revival)
Note: Ricky is the only example of this type of Misto I’ve seen, but it felt like it needed its own category. Could be considered a variant of Showman Misto.
Character Arc Misto:
Only sings a little or not at all, though he’s usually not mute Young and trying to prove himself, doesn’t lack confidence outside of general inexperience Lets Tugger lead his number and doesn’t direct him, unless it’s at the very end Example: Jacob Brent (1998 VHS, among others)
Vague and Aloof Misto:
Mute Leads his own number, not lacking confidence, but also not singing any of it It’s hard to tell what his motivations are: He’s mysterious Example: Valentin Baraian (Vienna 1983-1990)
Note: This is the most likely type to be cryptid, though Cryptid Misto is an aesthetic that can be applied to any type, really.
Shy Misto:
Mute Young and insecure, prone to making mistakes Not taken seriously by most older characters until near the end Example: Lindsay Chambers (1992 Zurich, among others)
Note: Laurie Davidson is a sort of speaking variation of this, but the movie’s too different from the play for anyone to match up with anything.
Munk’s Assistant Misto:
Sings Gumbie Cat Clearly an adult, on equal footing with Munkustrap Too present in the tribe to hide his powers. For this reason, this version is rarely used Example: Victor Ullate Roche (Madrid 2003-2004)
Note: This was probably the first type of Misto to ever exist, because Misto sang Gumbie Cat originally, creating a sense that Munk and Misto were passing leadership back and forth. I haven’t paid enough attention to the Original London Cast to be certain that Wayne Sleep fits the type, outside of singing Gumbie Cat. The character has evolved away from this and the Madrid production might be the only later production to use it.
None of these Mistos are bad. I have a preference for Character Arc Misto, but Misto is not required to have an arc and other types can be fun. Each version plays a different role, and they all have strengths and weaknesses. The only one that doesn’t entirely work is Tugger’s BF Misto, because of how much Misto becomes a satellite character. But, this version of Misto is much newer than the others, so the bugs haven’t been worked out yet. It’s a new Misto prototype.

Day 17 of Jellicle Ships month - Bombalurina
Now, we all know Bombalurina. But I will add this: she shouldn’t be reduced to just “the sexy one”.
She shows strong protective qualities, devotion, and warmth: in the 1998 movie she shows visible sympathy when Mistoffelees is embarrassed by Munkustrap’s glare in ‘the Gumbie Cat’, for example, and she can often be seen petting the kittens in the background. And, of course, one of her three words is “generous”.
Relationships
Her most obvious and strongest relationships are with Demeter, Tugger, and (offstage) with Macavity: the first could be familial or romantic, the second could be romantic or flirty friends (possibly with benefits, the third is almost explicitly sexual but not particularly romantic. The decade-long fifth US tour (Troika, 2001–2012) included a regular bit of business to end the curtain call: a very suggestive little exchange between Tugger and Bombalurina, where it’s made quite clear who’s in charge in that relationship!
In many productions (such as Madrid 2003) she has a strong relationship with Munkustrap—I seem to recall Jack Rebaldi saying that he was playing Munkustrap there as yearning after her but being too busy leading the tribe to let himself make a move. In the 1998 movie she pairs up with Pouncival at the Jellicle ball, but this is not common.
Her manner of mentioning Griddlebone in Macavity’s song might be read as her having a crush on Griddlebone (either as a fictional character or a real cat).
In many Broadway-based productions, since Alonzo dances with Demeter during Bombalurina’s dance at the ball, Bombalurina dances either with Munkustrap or with Plato (who seems closer to her age in the Broadway tradition than Plato/Admetus in the London tradition). Alonzo is another cat with whom she often flirts: in the 2020 Asia tour, for example, Fletcher Dobinson’s Alonzo and Suzie Melloy’s Bombalurina usually end the curtain call sequence with a playful little dance competition. Suzie (who was also Bombalurina in the 2017 Asia tour) has suggested that Electra is her daughter—either by Macavity or Alonzo.
When it comes to familial headcanons, she is also a strong candidate for Jemima’s mother, though not currently so popular in fandom as Demeter.

Another addition to my CATS programme and brochure collection is this CATS London programme from February 1999. I would have loved for there to be more photos in here, but these are likely in the companion brochure, which I do not own (yet).
The cast here includes some familiar faces from CATS (1998) like Veerle as Jemima (my favourite Jemi) and Beth Robson, who was the dance captain and assistant choreographer, and was an on set swing (she covered Jennyanydots for that one short reprise of 'Grizabella the Glamour Cat').
Also featured is Jack Rebaldi who played Munkustrap on and off in London from 1997 to 2001, and then decided that he might as well do Berlin (2002-2003), Madrid (2003-2004), Dusseldorf (2005), the German Tour (2005-2006), and the German Tent Tour (2010) as well. Because why the hell not when you can speak and sing in at least three different languages (I have been told that he actual speaks six different languages) well enough to perform, and are just generally taller than everyone else? Everytime you look at the cover of CATS (1998) with the cast photo, that is Jack as Munk (Veerle is also on that cover as Jemima).
There are also many other cast members in this programme who were a part of other previous and future productions of CATS, such as Antwerp 1996 and the UK tours.
As I have said before, these are snapshots into CATS history, and I am glad to own them!
