Book Review: The Real Bridgerton by Catherine Curzon
If you think the tv series Bridgerton is scandalous, you underestimate the upper classes of the eighteenth century. Catherine Curzon has taken the most outrageous happenings and placed them in a collection, each verified by historical evidence, it is a well-written account of the era. However, I found the repetitive nature of the scandals wearying. It gives little away to say the vast majority…

Women’s History Meme || Scandals (big or small) (4/5) ↬ Sophie Dorothea von Braunschweig & the Königsmarck Affair
When Count Philip Christoph von Königsmarck wrote those lines to his lover, Sophia Dorothea, Electoral Princess of Hanover, they were just one stitch in a patchwork of romance, intrigue and, ultimately, catastrophe. From her spoiled girlhood in Celle to her lonely incarceration at Ahlden, her life truly ran the gamut from charmed to cursed. Confined to her genteel prison, Sophia Dorothea was supposed to vanish like a conjurer’s assistant. Yet she never quite disappeared and as the mother of George II, she played a vital role not only in the history of the United Kingdom, but of Europe. Without her the world would have been a different place and though she may have been locked away, her memory has persisted. Today Sophia Dorothea’s fate continues to fascinate as a grim fairy tale that was all too real. No matter how much her husband hoped that she would be forgotten, she lives on, as vibrant today as she was more than three centuries ago when she took up her pen and wrote, ‘My only pleasure is to make you remember me’. And to this day, we do. — The Imprisoned Princess: The Scandalous Life of Sophia Dorothea of Celle by Catherine Curzon

"Caroline of Ansbach was, by all accounts, a beauty. With her dazzling blue eyes, rosy cheeks and waves of blonde hair, she had a poise and grace that turned heads wherever she went and a bosom that set noble hearts aflutter.
She was also smart, a witty and known for her pitch perfect, witheringly arch impersonations of courtiers. By the time Caroline reached 20, speculation over her future was rife, and would-be suitors came calling from the continental courts, keen to snatch this astute, well connected stunner for themselves.
Dowager Electress Sophia of Hanover (...) called Caroline "the most agreeable Princess in Germany" and it seemed that one man who certainly agreed was Archduke Charles of Austria. This was a man with connections, a man who would make any politically ambitious girl a fine husband, set as he was to eventually become the Holy Roman Emperor.
(...) The one small spanner in the works was the fact that Caroline wasn't only a Lutheran, she was vehemently a Lutheran. Charles was Catholic and so, if the marriage was to be contracted, one of them would have to change their persuasion.
(...) Although devout in her faith, Caroline agreed to consider conversion and Father Ferdinand Orban, a Jesuit priest, was sent to school the young lady in her possible change of faith. In fact, this proved to be a decisive moment in the negotiations and far from convincing her that Catholicism was the way forward, Orban actually did precisely the opposite.
After her lessons with him, Caroline was often distressed, unable to reconcile the idea of converting to Catholicism with her pious devotion to her own faith.
Eventually, perhaps with not such a heavy heart, Caroline decided that she wouldn't be able to accept Charles's proposal if it meant to change her faith. Together, she and Leibniz composed a letter explaining the decision.
Caroline would later shine as a beacon of Protestantism in her adopted country, and memorably told John Robinson, the Bishop of London, that he was 'very impertinent to suppose that I, who refused to be Empress for the sake of the Protestant Religion, don't understand it fully'."
Book: Catherine Curzon, "Queens of Georgian Britain".
Fancast: Sarah Gadon as Queen Caroline.
