Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles
Tumblr media
[ID: Banner of the game Yonder. It shows an illustrated scene of a farm. In the foreground, a brown-haired player character and a small red fox are napping next to a big fluffy brown animal with huge horns. In the background are two wooden animal pens with red roofs and a pair of the same horned animal, on adult and a young one. The sky is blue and the grass green and dotted with flowers. The game logo is mostly golden, with the O being an illustration of big blue round sails. End ID]
I want to put this whole review under the fact that I bought this game on sale for less than 5 Euro. There will be a lot of bitching, and many things I would not accept with the non-sale price, but it was cheaper than a pizza and kept me busy for over 25 hours (though I admit, I am not the fastest, so I think <20h is realistic).
In Yonder, you are trying to find out about your past when your ship sinks and you end up stranded on an island threatened by the murk - some kind of dark fog blocking areas. Only you can see and befriend the small creatures called sprites which you need to clear the murk, progress the story, and finally discover the (very surprising! :o not) truth about your past.
On your way to do so, you have to gather resources, barter for goods, tame animals, catch fish, and discover secrets.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot of the game. The player character is overlooking a vast landscape with a huge mountain in the far background, surrounded by a pink forest. Trees closer to the player are green instead, and the landscape sports many cliffs and an ocean on the right side of the picutre. The sky is mostly blue, with a few pinkish-white clouds. Some kind of whale-shaped animal is floating in the distance between the clouds. End ID]
The positives:
Save whenever, good autosaves, multiple save slots.
Customize character with hair and eye colors, but also body shapes! Yay.
Lots of clothes to discover as well.
Cute animals to tame <3
If you have 2 of the same animal on a farm, there will be a third, baby version, it's so adorable.
Very relaxed, stress free gameplay. No combat, no death, drowning ports you back up on land.
The quest log is very detailed and works as a marker on the map, too.
Tons of things to discover, and very clear progression indicators.
I really liked the lighting in this game. Beautiful sunrises <3
Two modes of fast travel - from farm to farm for a (small) cost, and from one sage stone to any of the others once their quest is cleared.
Big inventory, early unlocked stash.
Some beautiful, diverse biomes.
Keyboard controls can be rebound.
Plays perfectly on the steam deck.
Tumblr media
[ID: Another screenshot. The player character is gliding over a purple forest while hanging onto a rainbow colored umbrella. Underneath the character is a settlement with purple buildings, what looks to be an observatory and a giant planet model. The landscape in the distance is covered in fog and tinted with warm sunlight. End ID]
The neutral:
Short, lackluster story. This is not a game I bought for the story.
Farming is very basic. There's 4 different crops, a couple different animals to tame, and you can plant trees, which only give you the same wood you can find all over the place. It's not a farming game, though, so whatever.
The foxes are adorable but don't give anything unique. Some produce items that are harder to get, which is nice.
The game is a bit inconsistent whether a quest will use up your items or not. All the clothes you have to find for the scarecrow you get to keep, while other items get used up.
Hell, you can BUY tools, even though you get every single on for free and they cannot break, get lost, or get dropped. Why tf? I played the whole game having 2 sickles, unable to get rid of one of them.
Crafting is an over complicated, horrible UI, convoluted mess. Why is this in neutral?
Because you can buy pretty much everything. You can break rocks for days and then spend several minutes crafting ever increasing intermediate steps to get a bunch of stone pillars and arches - or you return for a few days and just buy them.
There is no money, so you barter with goods matching prices, which is a bit annoying. I ended up paying everything with potatoes and grass.
With a bit of patience and luck, you can even buy every fish, and it counts for the fishing collection, which, thank you, fishing is annoying.
Very short ingame calendar; a year is 30 days, so each season only lasts 7-8 days.
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot of the game's crafting menu. It shows available recipes for the profession Constructor, with things such as stone arches and pillars, farm buildings made from stone, various metal ingots, and a set of profession specific clothes. End ID]
The negatives:
(Aka things that made me want to throw my deck at the wall.)
Jumping sucks. If you're standing wrong against a rock, jumping will make you jump back instead of up, which might lead to you falling off things. Luckily, very little jumping is actually required.
You can't select a hairstyle when creating the char, you find them all over the place. Default hair is ugly af. If I hadn't found a cute one pretty soon, it would have been WAY less fun staring at an ugly blob of polygons for 20 hours.
Similarly, you get some basic hair colors and can unlock super fancy ones in the game. Now why is this negative? Because not all default colors exist as shampoo, and I was so happy to find a perfect hair color when making my char, which I would have never gotten back, so I couldn't use any shampoo :(
The. Sounds. This game has some of the most grating, repetitive, ear-bleeding sounds I have ever had the displeasure of encountering in a game. Usually, I would turn off sounds nothing much lost, but:
The. Cats. There is a quest to find 55 cats in this game, and the only way to find them is to have sounds on, because they mew very loudly when you get close - or, I guess, seeing a blob of tiny pixels hidden away between rocks and trees 55 times.
Speaking of the cats. Some of them only appear at certain times, like winter, spring and summer nights, or even summer sunrise. In my opinion, this makes finding them without the wiki tedious; perhaps possible, definitely not worth it.
The only good point about the cats is that there's more cats in the game than you need, so there is a chance you find enough of one breed on your own.
Day/night cycle from 6am-6pm and vice versa, with no way to skip time. Which means for half of the game time, it's annoyingly dark. Makes it extremely hard to see anything, hey, at least you get a lantern. Which bugged once leaving me with a pitch black screen. Its just not fun. It would have been fine if nights weren't 12 hours long.
I would have turned my screen brighter, but days are extremely bright in comparison - even after turning down bloom.
Thunderstorms, especially at night. They just flash the whole screen white in irregular intervals, it's horrible. Once or twice, I had to put the deck down and wait until they were over. Luckily, they were rare.
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot of the game, showing the player character in front of one of the sage stones; a giant face made out of stone, mouth wide open, mouth and eyes glowing brightly. It's sitting on an uphill slope on a snowy mountain with a huge cliff face to the left. End ID]
There were a few minor bugs; the aforementioned missing lamp during one night, I somehow completed a quest twice and got two badges, and the UI for board quests if you talk to the quest giver NPC without the items present is so bad I consider it a bug. Nothing gamebreaking.
Why do I still recommend it? Well, it was fun. Mostly. It was a real "couldn't put it down" game for a week or two, just one more quest, one more creature. It was less fun to have the game running for 2 real life hours waiting for next winter because I was missing one single cat and had nothing else left to do.
It's also a game I will happily uninstall and never touch again now that I 100% it, which, honestly, is nice, I have enough games to return to. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a way to hide the interface for better screenshots (though you can try to catch the split second before opening inventory or compass.)
If you like low-stakes, cozy games, this one might be for you - but on sale. If you're sensitive to flashing lights, beware of the thunderstorms.

Day 897 - 899 (2 years, 179 - 181 days)
Just a small update. Old traveling spirit arrived.
Tumblr media
The Doublefive Light Catcher from the Season of Lightseekers.
Just realized that hat is probably the closest thing I will get to a bamboo hat... hmm... gives me an idea but the suit might be a bit challenging.
Tumblr media
There was also a new update today. I swear they changed the lighting again. My cape didn't use to have such a strong gradient.
Tumblr media
Also a small update to nests. You can now preview others people's nests. Sure will spurn my creativity hopefully. X]
Tumblr media
Daily tasks now look different in the UI. They also removed the numbers on them.
Also they brought the Sanctuary turtle back! Finally can get the wax from there again! ^^

Tutorial Feedback
14.02.24
stay away from the branding idea
do an editorial book instead of a zine
considered bounding/paper thinking about how it’s built
ui/ux idea is interesting - could create a system where on the app people add info about themselves so the app can understand them better
dream journal documentation of my dreams
create a system for how I record my dreams, if there’s a reoccurring dream tag it with colours
analysing - sleep report
digital and analogue
could become a product design of some sort
a product that goes with the book
artist who mapping out his breath - using pencils/drawing - perhaps could think of a way to visualise my dreams this way
data visualisation - sleeping app
correlation between rem and non-rem sleep
drink tea some nights and document sleep
mugwort - lucid dream tea
chat gpt ideas:
dream catcher pen - speak into it and it captures voice recordings
this might not be strong enough though because people can just use voice memos on their phone
dream visualisation cards - deck of cards featuring dream-related imagery and prompts designed to stimulate creativity and insight during dream journalling sessions. each card could have a different dream symbol or theme, along with thought-provoking questions to prompt deeper exploration of dream meanings
dreamscape art kit
smart dream journal app
lucid dream tea set
the tea set comes with a dream journal booklet specifically tailored for documenting dreams after consuming the tea. additionally, the set could include informational materials on lucid dreaming techniques and tips for maximising dream recall and clarity

Sons of the Forest patch 6 makes everything harder, even your base
Tumblr media
With the arrival of patch 6, everything in Sons of the Forest is getting harder. If you want it to, at least. The most recent Sons of the Forest update adds stone as a resource that can be gathered and used to create a variety of structures to help shore up your own defences and build the best Sons of the Forest base, in addition to introducing the first implementation of a "hard survival" difficulty for one of the best co-op games this year. Hard survival mode is intended as a more true survival game experience for players who enjoy the torment of having to keep themselves fed and watered in tough environments. When selecting this new difficulty, you’ll face reduced food spawns in crates, lowered fish and animal spawns in the world, lower health and stamina regeneration while cold, an increased penalty for using raw or rotten meats, and no item storage crate respawns when you load the game. Whether you fancy that mode or not, the addition of stone in Sons of the Forest should make for some much sturdier structures. You’ll find this new resource available to collect all over the world, and can use it to build all manner of stone walls, beams, and columns, as well as stone fireplaces. Kelvin will be able to collect and use stone if you ask him to, and it can be placed in the advanced log sled alongside logs, rocks, sticks, and bones. Among the rest of the full Sons of the Forest patch notes (which you can see below), you’ll also now be able to build custom effigies, quickly dump out the contents of your cooking pot or flask, and more easily place your cooking pot onto the fire while holding it. There’s also plenty of additional minor updates: cannibals will now drag injured friends away, the rain catcher won’t tell you it’s ready unless there’s enough water for a full drink, and fish caught in traps will no longer go rotten before you collect it. Sons of the Forest patch 6 release date and patch notes Sons of the Forest patch 6 is out now on Steam. Here are the full patch notes, courtesy of developer Endnight Games: New Features - Hard survival difficulty mode added. - Stone pickups added to world. - Buildable stone fireplace, stone walls, stone beams, and stone columns. - Custom effigies. - Advanced log sled can now hold logs, rocks, stones, sticks and bones. Improvements - Countdown clocks added to dining area of food and dining. - Blown apart limbs added to exploded bathroom in bunker luxury. - The cooking pot and flask can now be dumped out with right mouse button. - Cooking pot will now be placed on the fire immediately if the player is holding the pot while interacting with the fire. - If a fire is broken while the pot is cooking, the pots contents is reset back to water. The recipe is retained if the pot was done cooking when the fire is destroyed. - Added some water movement to the pot when not boiling. - Visual and audio improvements to steady water drip FX in caves. - Improvements and fixes to Lava sound and visuals. - Adding thunder sounds to lightning strikes in space city view of gold room cutscene. - Rain catcher will no longer show the refill icon until there is at least enough water for one drink. - The pot can now be re-added to the fire even if it has a completed recipe in it. - The hotkey UI will no longer show up in quick select and grab bag menus and only be visible when in the inventory. - Added loading hints for Comfort rating and Sleeping indoors vs outdoors. - Added a loading hint for cooking bonuses. - Fish traps now run in game time instead of real time to work better with pausing and sleeping. - Fish caught in traps will no longer go rotten. - Added UI for current cooking bonuses. - Improved UI for cooking recipes. - Added a new equip/unequip animation for shotgun that is simpler and matches the idle held pose, so blending feels smoother and less awkward. - Cannibals will sometimes drag their dying friends away from the player. - General optimizations to reduce AI update cost. - Kelvin can now pickup stones. - Kelvin can now fill the log sled with sticks, rocks, and stones. - Reduced some oversaturated animal spawn areas and spread them out more. - Fixed dead bodies in beach cave floating in multiplayer games when host player is not in the cave. - Player effigies cause fear to cannibals based on number of body parts. - Spearing multiple fish will visually stack on spear instead of all overlapping. - AI are no longer blocked by defensive stick spikes, but still take damage. Balance - Sleeping outdoors will now give less rest than sleeping indoors. - The amount of rest gained by the player is now modified by their current comfort rating (certain soups and clothing can affect comfort rating). - Lowered chance of meds in crates. - Large Demons can now sometimes appear above ground after end game. - Lumberjack juice recipe has been reworked so that it’s easier to make in peaceful games. - Added hard survival to start difficulty settings. - Cooking buff durations changed from 8 hours to 4 hours in game time. - Hard survival; Reduced food spawns in crates. No Item storage crate respawn on load in this game mode. Lowered fish and animal spawns. Decreased target health and stamina regen speeds while cold. Increased penalty for raw/rotten meats. Additional bug fixes can be found via the game’s Steam page. Make sure you know where to find everything on the Sons of the Forest map with our handy guide, including all Sons of the Forest keycards. If you’re looking to play Sons of the Forest on Steam Deck, we’ve tested it thoroughly to see how it performs. Read the full article

Alpha update 0.2.1
Update 0.2.1 is out and brings with it a few new things.
Bug fixes:
Fixed UI falling apart if no scenes exist. Placed an error catcher that informs if the gameData file is not detected and steps to fix the issue. Appropriate message should appear in all editor windows if this happens.
Editor UI tweaks:
Placed horizontal bars to help with readability of page editor’s sections.
Spaced the page list a little to help with miss-clicks.
Increased the indent level of page elements inside a condition.
Stretched the editor window in the attached layout to accommodate for smaller resolution screens. You will need to once again load the layout from file to overwrite the preset in your editor.
New features:
Implemented accessibility mode.
You can now name individual pages. For space saving purposes the field to rename a page only appears for the currently selected page. Same thing applies to scenes.
You can now jump to the next scene from any page by setting the choice button’s destination page to -1. Depending on future feedback navigation might be expanded further.
Implemented choice picked as a possible condition. You can now type “choice = {number}” to have text appear only if a specific choice was selected on the previous page. Choices are numbered top to bottom starting at 1. Other methods of comparing can be implemented in the future based on demand.
Not exactly as new feature as it's a system built into TextMeshPro, but you can make your text bold, italic etc. by using HTML style inline elements like .
In a few moments the files will be sent to all testers. There's no need to install the editor from scratch you can update it by importing the package into your existing project. Unity will handle replacing and adding necessary files on its own. Later tomorrow I'll update the existing guides to account for new features and also start working on part 3 which will touch on how you can customize your game's interface.

7 Rules for Creating Gorgeous UI
The Rules
1. Light comes from the sky
2. Black and white first
3. Double your whitespace
4. Learn the methods of overlaying text on images
5. Make text pop — and un-pop
6. Use only good fonts
7. Steal like an artist
Rule 1: Light Comes From the Sky
Our screens are flat, but we’ve invested a great amount of art into making just about everything on them appear be 3-D.
Shadows are invaluable cues in telling the human brain what user interface elements we’re looking at so the light illuminates the tops of things and casts shadows below them. The tops of stuff are lighter, the bottoms are darker.
This is perhaps the most important non-obvious thing to learn about UI design: light comes from the sky so in case the light comes from below sometimes looks rather freaky.
Well, the same is true for UI. Just as we have little shadows on all the undersides of all our facial features, there are shadows on the undersides of just about every UI element you can find.
Rule 2: Black and White First
Designing in grayscale before adding colour simplifies the most complex element of visual design– and forces you to focus on spacing and laying out elements.
UX designers are really into designing “mobile-first” these days. That means you think about how pages and interactions work on a phone before imagining them on your monitor.
It clarifies thinking. You start with the harder problem (usable app on a teeny-weeny screen) -> adopt the solution to the easier problem (usable app on a large screen).
Well here’s another similar constraint: design black and white first. Start with the harder problem of making the app beautiful and usable in every way, but without the aid of colour. Add colour last, and even then, only with purpose.
How to add colour
The simplest colour to add is one colour.
Adding one colour to a grayscale site draws the eye simply and effectively.
By modifying the saturation and brightness of a single hue, you can generate multiple colours— darks, lights, backgrounds, accents, eye-catchers— but it’s not overwhelming on the eye.
Rule 3: Double your whitespace
If you want to make UI that looks designed, you need to add in a lot of breathing room.
Sometimes a ridiculous amount.
Whitespace, HTML, and CSS
If you are used to formatting with CSS, where the default is no whitespace, it’s time to un-train yourself of those bad habits. Start thinking of whitespace as the default— everything starts as whitespace, until you take it away by adding a page element.
Rule 4: Learn the methods of overlaying text on images
There are only a few ways of reliably and beautifully overlaying text on images.
Method 0: Apply text directly to image
I hesitate to even include this, but it is technically possible to put text directly on an image and have it look OK.
Method 1: Overlay the whole image
Perhaps the easiest method to put text on an image is to overlay the image. If the original image isn’t dark or bright enough, you can overlay the whole image with translucent black or white.
Here’s a trendy splash image with a dark overlay.
Method 2: Text-in-a-box
This is very simple and reliable. Whip up a mildly-transparent black rectangle and lather on some white text. If the overlay is opaque enough, you can have just about any image underneath and the text will still be totally legible.
Method 3: Blur the image
A surprisingly good way for making overlaid text legible is to blur part of the underlying image.
You can also use the out-of-focus area of a photo as the blur. But beware— this method is not as dynamic. If your image ever changes, make sure the text is always over the blurry bits.
Method 4: Floor fade
The floor fade is when you have an image that subtly fades towards black at the bottom, and then there’s white text written over it. This is an ingenious method. To the casual observer, it appears that these Medium collections are displayed by plastering some white text over an image— but in response to that, I say false! There’s ever-so-subtle a gradient from the middle (black at 0% opacity) to the bottom (black at, maybe ‘bout 20% opacity).
Difficult to see, but definitely there, and definitely improving legibility.
Also notice that the Medium collection thumbnails use a slight text shadow to further increase legibility.
— why does the image fade black at the bottom? For the answer to that the light always comes from the top. To look most natural to our eye, the image has to be slightly darker at the bottom, just like everything else we ever see.
Bonus Method: Scrim
A scrim is a piece of photography equipment that makes light softer. Now it’s also a visual design technique for softening an image so overlaid text is more legible.
Rule 5: Make text pop — and un-pop
Styling text to look beautiful and appropriate is often a matter of styling it in contrasting ways— for instance, larger but lighter.
In my opinion, one of the hardest parts of creating a beautiful UI is styling text— and it’s certainly not for unfamiliarity with the options.
Size (bigger or smaller)
Colour (greater contrast or lesser; bright colours draw the eye)
Font weight (bolder or thinner)
Capitalisation (lowercase, UPPERCASE, and Title Case)
Italicisation
Letter spacing (or tracking)
Margins (technically not a property of the text itself, but can be used to draw attention, so it makes the list)
There are a few other options that are possible for drawing your attention, but not particularly used or recommended:
Underline. Underline means links nowadays, and it’s not worth trying to force it to mean anything else.
Text background colour. Perhaps interesting as a hover effect, I wouldn’t use this for any common styles.
Up-pop and down-pop
You can divide all the ways of styling text into two groups:
Styles that increase visibility of the text. Big, bold, capitalised, etc.
Styles that decrease visibility of the text. Small, less contrast, less margin, etc.
We’ll call those “up-pop” and “down-pop” styles. We won’t call it “visual weight”.
Selected and hovered styles
Styling selected elements and hover effects are another round in the same game— but more difficult.
Usually, changing font-size, case, or font-weight will change how large of an area the text takes up, which can lead to seizing hover effects.
What does that leave you with?
Text colour
Background colour
Shadows
Underlining
Slight animations— raising, lowering, etc.
One solid option: try turning white elements coloured, or turning coloured elements white, but darkening the background behind them.
Rule 6: Use Only Good Fonts
There are no strategies or things to study in this section.
Sites with a very distinct personality can use very distinct fonts. But for most UI design, you just want something clean and simple.
That’s right, buddy, put down the Wisdom Script.
There’s more than enough out there at the zero-dollar price point.
Rule 7: Steal like an artist
The first time I sat down to try and design some app element— a button, a table, a chart, a popup, whatever— was the first time I realised how little I knew about how to make that element look good.
But as luck would have it, I haven’t had to invent any new UI elements yet. That means I can always see how others have done it and cherry-pick from the best.
But where should one cherry pick? Here are the resources I have found absolutely the most useful while designing for clients. Listed in descending order:
1. Dribbble
This invite-only “show and tell for designers” site has bar-none the highest quality of UI work online. You can find great examples of almost anything here.
2. Flat UI Pinboard
I haven’t the slightest idea who “warmarc” is, but his pinboard of phone UI had been ridiculously useful to me trying to find disparate examples of beautiful UI.
3. Pttrns
A directory of mobile app screenshots. The nice thing about Pttrns is the whole site is organised by— wait for it— UX patterns. This makes it very nice to quickly research whatever piece of interface you’re currently working on, be it a login page, a user profile, search results, etc.
I’m a firm believer that every artist should be a parrot until they’re good at mimicking the best. Then go find your own style; invent the new trends.
In the meanwhile, let’s make like thieves.
And, in the spirit of this section, the title “Steal Like an Artist” was lifted from an eponymous book that I have not read, mostly because the title seems to sum up anything that the pages might contain.

finished magireco s3 and while i liveblogged it on my twitter i tried to summarize my thoughts here if you didn’t want to scroll through that (spoilers under the cut obvs)
the good:
they actively fixed the hospital tiro backstory so it not only flows better (ex: instead of alina showing up randomly when ui was turning into a witch she showed up bc she was hunting down kyubey bc he kept info from her) but it actually makes more sense now
animation was solid as per usual
speaking of animation the new transformations? great
i liked how even after remembering the whole truth touka and nemu still went ahead with their plan in order to save ui/iroha specifically, i think this was more in character for them compared to in game where they stopped the entire plan once they remembered
the mifuyu scene was really well done and thematically perfect for her character, as she is based on the bird catcher from galactic railroad, so what better way to showcase that by her saving the “birds” (magical girls) she lured into her “net” (magius) by “turning them into candy” (purifying them/giving them hope)
the stuff with mitama as well was really good too
OH and the rena/kaede stuff was great i love how rena finally found the words to tell kaede what she means to her (only took 3 seasons lol)
SPIN OFF CAMEOS I ACTUALLY YELLED SEEING TART AND KAZUMI
kuroe’s witch design is cool
i liked the speech iroha had with her doppel about hope (although i do wish anime iroha had more of game iroha’s development carried over as its less impactful, i don’t think its bad which is why im putting it here but i think it could've been better if she had it tbh)
i got my karin cameo :)
“NEO DOROTHY MOTHERFUCKER”
i was so absolutely right about godoka cameo-ing wow
the bad:
kuroe im so fucking sorry but im also not very surprised you got done dirty for what was ultimately sub-par character development for iroha
no seriously why was kuroe even THERE?? was her character only there for this moment of angst for iroha?? if so then wowww
why is momoko dead. no actually why tho. mifuyu i understand that i saw coming from like s1 but momoko??? why
why did alina’s plan change. like what was the point
i cannot believe they went ahead and killed the hospital trio, like touka and nemu i get BUT also ui?? wow
they kept holy alina (well. kinda) but no magical artist ost my biggest F
homura gets so screwed over in the end like actually tho im making another post about this (edit: i made the post here)
the ???:
touka is just like that bc she doom scrolls on twitter too much, incredible writing decision
“I AM THE RAGE OF MAGICAL GIRLS” bby ur 12 with a god complex
i find it extremely funny how now every spin off has been acknowledged before different story (excluding comedy spin offs and wraith arc for obvs reasons) what kinda monkey paw bs is this
given the final shots of the show im assuming that the anime is supposed to be the ‘bad’ end while the game timeline is the ‘true/good’ end? if this was the intention then props to shaft for having the balls to try and execute it (prob couldve been done better considering all the jp fans i saw giving out magireco app download links LMAO)
what the hell is going on with iroha at the end of the series no actually tho (EDIT: NEARLY 2 MONTHS LATER HERE IT IS)

So You Want To Watch Star
but don’t know what episodes to watch!
That's completely understandable! Star is the type of show where the first season and a half feel like an entirely different show from the godsend that is the second half! So here's your guide on how to get to the good part.
On the fence? This show features an incredibly queer narrative told through straight people, along with showing the complexities of racism, classism, capitalism, privilege, and love, and how those tie together. It's heaven for people who love to analyze and learn from cartoons, as well as simps for healthy adorable romance. As a She Ra and Owl House fan...it's worth the watch.
My Rating Scale!

Heya'!,out of all the Arc 2 charas,I can say Chiharu is so far one of my favs, since I don't knpw much about Arc 2 charas was wondering if you could give me a piece of wisdom about her, some opinions, some funny commentary about her, anything!
Hey there! Sorry I took so long to answer this but I wanted to cover all my bases regarding Chiharu since you took the time to send me this (this is my favorite thing to do in JP: helping people connect to new characters that interest them!) so let’s get to it!
Chiharu is excitable, sort of like Felicia in terms of personality, but her main trait is her utter fascination with detectives! She has a favorite fictional detective whom she imagines monologuing in her head and treating her like his apprentice/sidekick by offering her advice when she’s stumped (her brooch in her personal memoria is merch of that detective). Fangirl aside, Chiharu actually has the makings of a great detective: her sense of smell is great (she comments on Sunao’s hair smelling great) and she’s pretty intuitive, being able to sense that something isn’t right, which is amplified into her unique magic: literally a detective instinct, being able to sense ‘evil’ and extending to sensing lies (she comments during Green Jasper Diviners that ‘it still smells’ when someone was trying to lie to her to get away with something) so Chiharu is basically a magical detective!
Magic aside, she’s a pretty nice person, she and Shizuka get along great due to their friendly personalities while Sunao tries to keep them from going overboard, essentially serving as The Responsible One. Chiharu is actually pretty into Decagon Ball, the anime that Felicia and Tsuruno love, which is something that Chiharu bonds with Felicia over (with Sunao spending time with Ui and Sana watching Mr.Purrs-A-Lot). Her MGS deals with the aftermath of Green Jasper Diviners and is about Chiharu seeing the charm of the countryside (due to her having been raised outside the clan’s villages in the city by her mother, who’s a nurse)
In terms of flaws, Chiharu has two main problems: first is her recklessness, which stems from her treating real life as though it was a detective story, an example would be how she places no concern on her own life being in peril while she snoops around in Green Jasper Diviners, like she’s expecting the iron clad rule of crime fiction ‘The detective being untouchable’ to be in effect in real life, not expecting the fact that the mastermind is already plotting her demise for digging too deep and that the one reason she’s still breathing is Shizuka’s constant interference in whatever Chiharu is poking her head in. Chiharu keeps acting as though she is in one of her detective stories, as though she cannot be harmed.
Chiharu’s second problem is her wish, which she was tricked into making, and as such, she seems to have some deep-suited issues regarding it, hell even her doppel summoning line is "Give me back my wish...!”. However, it doesn’t seem like she disagrees with the wish itself, which was to expose a political scandal, but her issue lies with the fact that she was tricked into making it (not as bad compared to Shizuka who grew up hearing about this ‘sacred duty’ which is suddenly revealed to just be a scheme to sell the lives of girls in exchange for money) so Chiharu feels like she was robbed of her wish.
About her doppel Oaji, the doppel of selection which takes the form of a sodegarami (a samurai-era man catcher), Chiharu mistakenly believes that Oaji exists to uphold the same kind of ideals as her in regards to catching evil, when in reality it just seeks six human sacrifices to take Chiharu’s place in the depth of the swamp underneath Chiharu’s feet. So her doppel represents the naivety in her ignorance of real ill will, not expecting the thing that helps her catch evil to actually be sacrificing them in her place (although the last few lines indicate that Oaji might be sacrificing people to protect Chiharu from being sacrificed and to store power to protect her from those who intend to do her harm)
In conclusion, Chiharu is a pretty interesting character that exudes the same ‘not an idiot but is still a dumbass’ energy that Felicia and Tsuruno have. She also has similar struggles to Sayaka in regards to ideals of justice but in more of a ‘needing to grow up a little’ than the disillusionment Sayaka faces.
I just thought I should mention the fact that us at the reading server are currently watching Green Jasper Diviners Part 1! So you’re welcome to join the discussion if you’re interested! Here’s the link: https://discord.gg/Z6yfBud9HH

Possessed Shell Notes 2
Here’s some more details of how season 3 went in this AU.
Battle For Mewni: Mostly went the same, but without Marco their to keep them sort of in line Foolduke and Ruberiot get captured, leaving the Mime to go all Rambo on some Rat asses and be the one who actually frees Star when she’s captured.
The events leading through Demoncism happen pretty much the same as they did originally since Marco wasn’t there for that anyway.
Sophomore Slump and Lint Catcher don’t happen because Marco decides not to be a dumbass not go to Mewni.
Trial by Squire sort of happens, with Star dragging Tom there to watch the event. Without Marco there Star and Higgs actually develop a bit of a friendship.
Princess Turdina happens even though Marco’s not there, with the other Princesses telling Heinous they’d already figured out he wasn’t a girl and didn’t care.
Starfari happens just like originally, but Sweet Dreams doesn’t because no one’s there to see what Star was doing. Lava Lake Beach happens but without anyone to talk to Kelly just sort of wonders off and grows more depressed. Death Peck has Tom threatened to be killed instead of Marco, while Ponymonium happens like it did.
Night Life happens in the sense that Star wakes up one Night with her arm shot off because Hekapoo didn’t know it was her, but she’s still got her Life.
Deep Dive sees Tom filling in the role Marco played in that episode originally, but when he and Janna lose track of Star they both try to use the wand at the same time. This creates magic feedback that merges them into one person (who Star would later name Joanna).
From there the season would continue on with the major events but with Joanna filling both the “Marco” and “Tom” roles and Star not having a left arm.
Monster Bash has Joanna actually being helpful, but in weirdly Janna way.
Stump Day doesn’t have anyone incite the wrath of a vengeful stump, so it goes off the way it’s supposed to.
Holiday Spellcial through Ludo, Where Art Though? happen nearly the same as originally. Though Holiday Spellcial would reveal that Star has been using the spying spell even more in this AU, which is how she knows not to contact Marco for help because he’s been “preoccupied.”
Is Another Mystery has Joanna try to convince the monsters to stay by noting how people see her as a monster now that she’s two people, but Buff Frog and the other monsters still leave.
Marco Jr. doesn’t happen because Raph and Angie were too busy being “cool parents” around their son and his girlfriend to make it happen.
Skooled happens like it did.
Booth Buddies would still happen, but as the first JoStar kiss. While Star and Joanna had “been together” since the fusion, they needed a push to actually get going with the new situation.
Bam Ui Pati and Tough Love happen like they did.
Divide and Conquer happen mostly the same except for two things. Joanna leads the team trying to slow Meteora down (which she calls Joanna’s Jostars and also includes Higgs), and after several months of a lot going wrong (which includes the loss of her arm and her boyfriend fusing with a girl in this AU) Star orders extra measures taken when she locks Eclipsa back up. This leads to her not only getting beaten harder than in the original episode, but Eclipsa can’t escape to help her so she gets soul drained and turned into a balloon for the next seven years.
