So I’m watching this yt video of the 1983 Castro street fair, and this guy, Don eckert, has perched himself up and videotaped the fair, for about an hour… whoever walked by him, some obvs friends of his, as much of the fair as he can get. And it’s just interesting to see a time capsule of this period of time. A small window into one day in 1983. And of course it’s sad cause it’s so early in the aids crisis and you know a lot of these people are going to be dead in the next few years. So as I’m watching I start googling ‘1983 Castro st fair’ to see if there’s any cool photos from that day, and if maybe this guy videotaped at the same time. And the first photo that google pops up is the black and white photo below of the lesbian couple photographed by someone called Rink. I know I’ve seen that fairly famous historical photo of lesbians of color many many times before, so I was wondering if this video guy caught them too, and he does! It’s wild! At 43:15 you see these exact ladies, almost in the exact pose, wearing the exact clothes in video! They’re looking over at the videographer. It’s just pretty cool thing to find this kinda weird pretty cool connection at 3am lol

The 49th Annual Castro Street Fair was held yesterday and it's probably one of the best. Not because of anything special, but because it felt like a return to normal after the pandemic.
It was founded in 1974 by the owner of a local camera shop named Harvey Milk who wanted to promote the growing number of gay-owned* businesses that a lot of the straights wanted absolutely nothing to do with and were openly hostile to how our neighborhood was turning into some kind of Gay Mecca™.
Just shy of a half-century, it's one of the cities biggest annual block parties, attracting hundreds of thousands of attendees while still a neighborhood block party where I can't go 30 feet without running into someone I know.

Castro Street
Tumblr media
Castro street, or "the Castro" is commonly referred to as San Francisco's gay district. In the 1950s, a large number of families moved out of Castro street, leaving it a primarily minority-driven area. This lowered rent prices and made the area more enticing to the gay community.
This street was on my list of topics to cover because it was where Harvey Milk lived and had his camera shop. In 2011, the first GLBT museum was opened in the United States, and continues to be one of the most popular attractions in the Castro.
Today, the Castro is reliant on gay tourism and holds many LGBT events to bring in income. Many people travel to the Castro for the atmosphere of acceptance or the historical sites in the area.
