The BC Backyard Wedding in Castlegar
September 15, 2023 The wedding of Rebekkah and Calvin in Castlegar, BC was a truly special and intimate occasion that perfectly captured their love and personalities. Set in a beautiful rustic countryside property, the backyard venue created a warm and inviting atmosphere for a memorable celebration.
The day started with clear skies, but there was a hint of smoke in the air from nearby wildfires, adding a touch of mystery to the ambiance. Guests arrived to find a stunning outdoor setup, with white wooden chairs arranged in rows facing a simple wooden altar decorated with wildflowers and greenery. The backdrop of British Columbia's wilderness, with its majestic mountains and tall trees, created a picturesque scene.
Rebekkah and Calvin chose to write their own vows, and when the time came for the ceremony, their heartfelt promises to each other moved everyone in the audience. Their vows were filled with love, humor, and a commitment to a lifetime together, making the ceremony a truly special and emotional moment.
Once the ceremony was over, the newlyweds, accompanied by their photographer, went into the nearby woods to capture some breathtaking photos. The slight smoky air added a unique and dreamy ambiance to the pictures, creating a beautiful and ethereal quality.
The reception followed, with guests seated at long wooden tables adorned with centerpieces of wildflowers and twinkling fairy lights overhead. The speeches during dinner were a highlight of the evening, with heartfelt anecdotes and humor. One of the most memorable moments was when Rebekkah's father shared a hilarious story about his missing tooth and the amusing search for it. It had everyone laughing and became a cherished memory of the evening.
As the night went on, a live band took the stage, filling the air with beautiful melodies that got everyone dancing. Rebekkah and Calvin shared their first dance as a married couple, lost in each other's eyes. It was a tender and beautiful moment that showcased their love for one another.
The festivities concluded with a magical sparkler exit, as the couple walked through a tunnel of sparklers held up by their loved ones. The sparklers lit up the night sky, creating a dazzling and unforgettable ending to a perfect day.
Rebekkah and Calvin's backyard wedding in Castlegar, BC was a celebration of love, laughter, and joy. It was a day filled with personal touches, beautiful moments, and the warmth of family and friends coming together to support their journey into married life. This special day will always hold a special place in their hearts, and the photographer was there to capture every precious memory.`;

February 24, 2023 marked one year from the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On March 6, roughly 25 people gathered at Castlegar's Spirit Square to commemorate this solemn occasion. Hosted by Kootenay For Ukraine, the event was marked by a moment of silence both at the beginning and again at closing. Opening statements gave updates on the current situation in Ukraine, and discussed critical needs. Weapons, medical supplies and a constant battle against propaganda were listed as being most critical at this time.

An evacuation order has been issued for the entire Village of Slocan, home to around 380 people at the south end of Slocan Lake, effective 8 a.m. PT Sunday, due to increasing fire activity from the Ponderosa wildfire, now mapped at 6.3 square kilometres, and the Mulvey Creek wildfire at 10.6 square kilometres.
An updated estimate on Sunday morning from the Regional District of Central Kootenay shows that 867 properties in the Slocan Lake wildfire complex, which includes Slocan and surrounding areas, were on evacuation order.
The announcement comes in response to recommendations from the BC Wildfire Service, which is anticipating a warming and drying trend along with elevated winds in the coming days, said Dan Elliott, RDCK Communications Officer.
Evacuees are directed to head south to the Emergency Support Services reception centre at Selkirk College near Castlegar, B.C. Slocan is located around 145 km east of Kelowna as the crow flies in B.C.'s southeast.
"We understand that everyone is frustrated, nervous, and stressed in these situations, so we aim to provide as much information and time as possible for residents to prepare to leave," Elliott told CBC News.
The RDCK had previously ordered evacuations for properties in the nearby Village of Silverton, about 28 kilometres north of Slocan, due to the Aylwin Creek wildfire.

Wells Dam Rest Area And Information Center, WA (No. 5)
The Columbia begins its 1,243 mi (2,000 km) journey in the southern Rocky Mountain Trench in British Columbia (BC). Columbia Lake – 2,690 ft (820 m) above sea level – and the adjoining Columbia Wetlands form the river's headwaters. The trench is a broad, deep, and long glacial valley between the Canadian Rockies and the Columbia Mountains in BC. For its first 200 mi (320 km), the Columbia flows northwest along the trench through Windermere Lake and the town of Invermere, a region known in BC as the Columbia Valley, then northwest to Golden and into Kinbasket Lake. Rounding the northern end of the Selkirk Mountains, the river turns sharply south through a region known as the Big Bend Country, passing through Revelstoke Lake and the Arrow Lakes. Revelstoke, the Big Bend, and the Columbia Valley combined are referred to in BC parlance as the Columbia Country. Below the Arrow Lakes, the Columbia passes the cities of Castlegar, located at the Columbia's confluence with the Kootenay River, and Trail, two major population centers of the West Kootenay region. The Pend Oreille River joins the Columbia about 2 miles (3 km) north of the United States–Canada border.

Syringa Provincial Park is located in south central BC near the southeast end of the Lower Arrow Lake. The lake is a part of the Columbia River that was widened and deepened with the construction of the Hugh Keenleyside Dam at Castlegar. Recreation opportunities on the Arrow Lake Reservoir have made the park a long time popular destination and offer a comfortable base camp for the family to pursue a variety of recreational pursuits including fishing, boating and swimming. Explore local history and visit the Doukhbour Village Museum and Zukerberg Island located in nearby Castlegar.
The park protects not only provincially significant interior Douglas-fir forests but also preserves one of the few remaining examples of grassland ecosystems in the Kootenays. A variety of wildlife are at home in the park including, elk, deer and a herd of rocky mountain bighorn sheep that can often be observed grazing on the many rock bluffs. Opportunities for nature appreciation occur all year making this park a destination in every season.
Date Established: November 19, 1968 Park Size: 4,499 hectares near the southeastern end of the Lower Arrow Lake
