The problem is, they gave us Rogue One and Andor.

Star Wars almost used to be its own genre when it came to written dialogue. Most lines were very simple, straightforward, and sometimes cheesy. You had gems like “fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” and some of the smarter characters had smarter lines, which sounded interesting because of good acting. But mostly it was just one-note, one-dimensional dialogue. “Join me.” “Never!” That sort of thing. THEN THEY STARTED DOING THIS:

“I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or a light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? Everything!” - Luthen Rael in Andor.

The depth of the writing weirdly all of a sudden caught up to the depth of the story?? And then this long, meticulous, carefully-constructed show is released right before we’re back to simple, fast action and dialogue that goes no deeper than:

“For some, hardship. For others, a new beginning.”

“And for us?”

We’re back to “war bad, power bad, that’s why the bad guys are saying it.” How am I supposed to watch both of these types of shows and believe they’re in the same universe?!

I’m obviously extremely naive and very new to tumblr but I had literally no idea that these two extremes existed. Bix has an appalling time of it in S1 but at no point did it feel to me that she was some kind of accessory or that she was being painted as a victim by dint of being a thinly painted character, or a woman to boot. She is SO well painted, emotionally, and whilst I don’t agree with some analyses of her that really doesn’t matter as long as we can agree that there is enough ‘there’ in her as a character to be able to analyse her in depth in the first place. And I’m sure there is. I certainly have written essays on her and have explored her in fiction. Anyone who sees her as a simplistic character, or as just an accessory to Caspian, is frankly not looking at the series in enough depth and should watch it again – paying attention.

Bix is a fantastic character in her own right, absolutely not an accessory to anyone but she is haunted by her past, has various extremely complicated relationships and has considerable emotional turmoil in the first half of the season, to the extent that she is reduced to an exhausted depressive fatalistic state by episode 7.

Both of these takes also seem to disregard the actual plot. In the very first episode, she makes what turns out to be a very poignant decision: she helps a friend (we can even cut out the ex bit here ) who is in need. It’s the same decision that Brasso makes. She makes the same kind of decision in episode 8, trying to contact that same old friend despite being warned that there is considerable risk involved. And because of this decision, she is captured and tortured to the brink of insanity. This isn’t the writers trying to make her into a victim or take her away her agency. This is a brutal presentation of what happens when fascists turn their murderous attention on an individual, one who was simply trying to do right thing.

Bix is so well written, as are all the characters, that imho both the “ Woman as victim” and “damsel in distress needs rescuing by the hero” tropes are subverted. What I mean is, we kind of get both scenarios – but both feel realistic and earned. Andor is a show populated with real people – not archetypes or stereotypes.

Having said that, I’m looking forward to seeing Bix in different incarnation(s) that Adria mentions in the next season…
