"I'm just a cook" - Stephen Seagal as Casey Ryback in Under Siege
Thinking about when I worked at a shitty restaurant + one night it was just me + 3 other women on closing shift, so some guy came in the back and waved a knife around, presumably for money but I’m not actually certain, bc he was met with the bartender holding a much bigger knife, a tiny teenager wielding a cast iron pan, an elderly woman holding up a crockpot of clearly boiling water, and me, turning on the meat slicer with eye contact for maximum effect. He left, but the moral of the story is not girl power or whatever, it’s just. Why the fuck would you threaten a room full of underpaid and sleep-deprived blue-collar workers surrounded by lethal weapons.

Under Siege (1992)
Tumblr media
I haven’t watched all of Steven Seagal’s filmography but I’m nonetheless confident in calling Under Siege his best film. It takes a somewhat familiar formula (it’s Die Hard on a boat) and delivers everything you want to see. There’s a lot of action and thrills, the stakes are high, the bad guys are terrific - so good they easily steal the show.
Aboard the battleship USS Missouri, Executive Officer Commander Krill (Gary Busey) is preparing a surprise party for the captain. No one suspects there's more to it than music and a hot lady busting out of the cake. Actually, it’s a ploy to get William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones) and his crew aboard so they can commandeer the ship and its nuclear arsenal. With all of the sailors killed or captured, it's up to the cook (Steven Seagal as Casey Ryback) and "Miss July" (Erika Eleniak as Jordan Tate) to save the day.
Unsurprisingly, Steven Seagal is not playing some lowly cook. He’s got special skills; exactly the kind required to take the Missouri back from the terrorists who’ve captured it. Even before we learn his backstory, you believe Ryback is up to the task because the character is smart. He knows he can’t take all of these baddies down on his own/through conventional methods so he finds ways to even the odds. Booby traps, subterfuge, calling for help, freeing some of his shipmates, getting anyone who will be sympathetic to help him and - my favorite - he picks up the weapons of those he defeats. It doesn’t sound like much but it’s what anyone with a brain would do in real life and in the movies, you rarely see anyone pick up a gun, much less pick up a spare so they can arm someone else to help. Though Seagal doesn’t prove himself to be all that charismatic, he handles the stunts well. You believe it when he sends the opposing goons to Davy Jones' locker. There are a lot of great kills in this movie, many of which will make you yell “Damn!” out loud.
I know Seagal has fans, but he's never been able to elevate the material handed to him. Luckily, we're in the hands of Andrew Davis (who made The Fugitive a year after this film) and a great supporting cast. First, there’s Gary Busey as Commander Krill. What a perfect role for him. The second he appears on-screen, you know he'll be an antagonist but then he surprises you by being even more despicable, sociopathic and corrupt than expected. You love to hate him because because you can tell he’s been thinking about this day for a long time, mentally picturing how it would all go down, and the people he was going to kill. You can’t wait for him to get what’s coming and the same goes for Tommy Lee Jones’ William Strannix. Somewhere between the cold, calculating Hans Gruber and the fanatical Egor Korshunov (from Air Force One”, another Die Hard-like action picture) he’s also enjoying this heist a little bit too much but between the jokes he makes at his victims’ expense, he keeps his cool. He recognizes the threat Ryback poses and comes up with counter strategies that keep him - and you - on your toes the whole way through.
Finally, we have Erika Eleniak as "Miss July", who might think is just a pretty face - and a bare chest - to add to the “R” Rating but she contributes A LOT. She’s the avatar for the audience: brought onboard the ship under false circumstances, she is totally in over her head. She realizes her only chance is to stick around with Ryback and yeah… that’s what you’d do too! I’m surprised more films haven't copied this aspect of Under Siege to give the hero someone to bounce off of and help them when they find themselves in a jam there’s seemingly no escaping.
Under Siege is a surprisingly memorable take on the Die Hard formula. I know that sounds like a backward compliment - like it’s only good if you’ve seen Die Hard a thousand times and you want something new - but this picture is solid. It’s a great “dad movie”, something you and the old man could sit through and thoroughly enjoy any day of the week. It makes great use of its location, both villains are memorable, the action is satisfying, Seagall handles the stunts well, and his sidekick is a great new ingredient to spice up the recipe. When you catch it, feel free to stay until the end of the credits to get some bonus facts about the ship upon which the film was shot. (On DVD, February 11, 2022)

“Everyone will think you’re a special forces military badass,” Ian says and yeah, maybe that slight hint of something in his voice should have tipped Mickey off, but he’s a little busy planning a profitable enterprise, fuck you very much, so it doesn’t. It’s not a half-bad idea, anyway. He can be a special forces military badass; just hand him a gun and call him Casey fucking Ryback.
They get the outfits, and they get going, and as they go Mickey slowly becomes aware of Ian throwing him these furtive looks. Mickey will turn his head and find Ian quickly averting his eyes; Ian will tell him something and then just keep looking for slightly too long.
It’s weird as fuck, and it’s kind of annoying, and eventually Mickey rolls his eyes and fixes his husband with a very direct glare. “The fuck you staring at?”
And Ian doesn’t say anything but his lips does this little twist and now that Mickey’s paying proper attention, he can see the signs clear as day; the faint blush to the tip of Ian’s ears, the slight widening of his pupils.
He raises his eyebrows. “Fucking really? This get you going?” Of course, Ian always had a hard-on for all that military shit… Still: “That the only reason you suggested it in the first place?”
“No!” Ian gives him an indignant look. “I suggested it because it’s a good fucking idea. But,” he allows after a moment, grinning slightly, “you looking hot as hell doesn’t hurt.”
“Mhm.” And sure, Ian thinking he looks hot as hell doesn’t hurt one bit, and sure, maybe Mickey’s just a little bit tempted to pull the van right over and let Ian show him all the ways he’s into this, but they’ve got a job to do and Mickey’s a goddamned professional (or just a bit of a tease), so he merely gives Ian a wicked smile: “Well, keep it in your pants ‘til we get this shit delivered, Army, and I’ll let you fire my bazooka all night long.”
“You will, huh.” Despite his unimpressed tone, Ian looks distinctively not turned off by this idea.
So they go about their business and now that Mickey knows the score he doesn’t mind his husband’s looks one bit and maybe he goes a little out of his way to play up the whole special forces military badass just slightly and then the clean cash’s been deposited at the bank and they’re back home and it’s weird but for all of Ian’s talk about how much he loves the uniforms he can’t seem to get them off quickly enough.

I'm dying to know; how should Under Siege have ended, according to you? Please go into as much detail as you'd like!
Under Siege!!! One of the most ridiculously fun films out there, and definitely one of my top ten TLJ roles. :D
Sadly my laptop is not functional at the moment, so I don't have as many screencaps lying around right now as I do of Batman Forever, but @lunoki 's wonderful gifs are readily available!
Tumblr media
Strannix and Krill absolutely make the film. Their dynamic as a villain duo is off the charts. They're joyfully intimate with each other, clearly know each other extremely well, and Strannix even seems acquainted with Krill's drag persona:
Tumblr media
Their dynamic also evolves throughout the film, with a lot more depth than Seagal's whole thing. Krill helped Strannix orchestrate the takeover of his ship, and Strannix's very first action on succeeding is to pronounce Krill captain (ie. he gives Krill something he knows Krill has always wanted) - and yet the moment orders need to be given, Strannix is the one who's giving them, and Krill is right back to calling him 'sir', almost as though this is a dance they're used to, like this is natural and familiar for them, like it's something they've grown into over the years. Did they serve together in the navy before Strannix joined the CIA? All signs point to yes. These two have known each other forever. They don't always get along - they have an argument or two in-film - but they are deeply affectionate and they are, always, on the same side:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so it's extremely telling that while Strannix is gloriously batshit throughout and makes a show of being 'unhinged', his decisions are all actually very rational and sane...until Krill's vessel gets blown up.
That is when Strannix goes off the deep end, that's when he loses his mind and starts to go wild talking about cartoons: when Krill dies.
Tumblr media
So, finally, how do I think the movie should end?
1. With Krill surviving - let Strannix have his breakdown thinking Krill has died, but let Krill miraculously escape and be working on a device to bring Casey Ryback (Seagal's character) down.
2. With Strannix beating Ryback in the final fight - let the fight be brutal, but let Strannix finally kick the guy's ass, like he deserves. Maybe it's too late to set off the nukes or the controls are fried, but Ryback is dead and the ship is still his, so it's kind of a victory for him, still.
3. With Strannix and Krill reuniting - Krill didn't need to use whatever he was working on, because Strannix beat Ryback, but it is an emotional Moment for Strannix to realize Krill not only made it alive, but was trying his best to help him win against Ryback.
4. With CIA handler Tom Breaker getting his comeuppance - Breaker is the guy who tried to kill Strannix, causing all this trouble in the first place, and it's at his door that the consequences must rest, so I'd like him to get a threatening letter or parcel in the mail suggesting that Strannix and Krill are watching him if he ever messes with another agent under his handlership.

Who wants a movie review? Under Siege is a film that's entertaining and funny but also what I've found to be a bit of a rarity.
If you can get past the 90's sexism and misogyny. It's brief and mostly directed towards the first 30 minutes of the film but can still be off-putting. It has a great cast including Tommy Lee Jones, Steven Seagal, and Colm Meaney.
Some trigger warnings and criticisms include the main cast heavily leaning towards straight white men but at least there are some characters of color. Could better, could be worse. Commander Krill uses the slur f*ggot early on which is uncomfortable.
Sexualization of a woman, Jordan Tate. Though brief, she is seen topless. She is very much my favorite character.
Jordan Tate, "Miss July" (Erika Eleniak) is treated like an actual person, not a sex object. Once rescued by Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal) she isn't dismissed as a woman. She's fully capable of defending herself, learning rapidly on the fly, steady under pressure, and determined to be of help. She has agency and is a strong enough part of the plot she isn't a Sexy Lamp. Neither is she belittled for being a sex worker. She is an actress who was brought on board for the Captain's birthday. At first she's very much treated like an object and a shallow, stupid blonde.
Commander Krill (Gary Busey) puts his hands all over her when she first arrives on board the Missouri. She isn't written as being okay with that. She is visibly uncomfortable and grossed out being surrounded by only men.
Once she's found by Casey she's never assaulted again, stands on her own with equal footing and even more depth than almost every other male character in the film, and never filmed from the male gaze. She is never treated as lesser than her male counterparts.
One of my favorite scenes involves one of the men who constantly refers to her as "Miss July" instead of by name, asks her to show him how to use a gun. I don't know if he was trying to flirt or actually meant it, but if so, how did he get into the Navy?
Jordan is having none of it, immediately loading the gun with speed and skill, visibly exasperated. She refused to be babysat, following Ryback into combat and holding her own.
Like every other male fantasy, Jordan Tate, the pretty blonde love interest ends up with Casey which as we all know, is a trauma bond, not happily ever after. But it's nice to see her end up happy, confident, and with someone who treats her like a human being.
For all of the queer kids, we do get to see Jordan decked out in tactical gear looking ready to murder me and that's hot as fuck. A lesbian must have been involved somewhere. Thank you mystery lesbian for the food.
I'm filing this under what I've dubbed "woman faces and kills her demons". It's a little outside what I'd usually consider for this category which tends to involve a level of sci-fi or fantasy. But Jordan is a badass and it's what she deserves.
Bonus:
Tommy Lee Jones plays the charismatic Stranix who takes over the Missouri, revealed to be the brains behind the entire operation. As a fan of Jones I love this character and love to hate him. Very reminiscent of Heath Ledger's Joker. He's an intriguing and strangely likeable villain. It's a wonderful portrayal and treat for fans of Jones.

But he doesn't get lucky
He's pretty assburger
Only communicates with literary language                                              Doesn't look you in the eyes
When his doctor gives him the diagnosis                                                     He just laughs it off in a very natural manner
He doesn't get invited to parties                                                                   But he wouldn't even go to them because he's Assburger
He doesn't notice sarcasm at all                                                               When he's made fun of

He Also Cooks
A McDanno fic for @stellarm (hope you enjoy it!) and the lyric prompt - Hold my breath as you're moving in/ Taste your lips and feel your skin/ When the time comes, baby don't run, just kiss me slowly/ Don't run away/ And it's hard to love again/ When the only way it's been/ When the only love you know/ Just walked away/ If it's something that you want/ Darling you don't have to run/ You don't have to go.
This ended up going somewhere I hadn’t planned, but you know me, I saw an opportunity for a movie reference and I went for it. Hopefully anyone not familiar with the movie will still enjoy it. 😉
*
Danny’s lips were so tantalizingly close Steve could almost taste them already. Almost being the operative word.
He’d held his breath as Danny had leaned forward, further into his personal space than he’d ever been before without some reason to excuse or justify it. There was no reason now as far as Steve could tell. No reason save the oldest in the world perhaps. Or so he hoped. Their proximity, the fact they were almost (that word again), but not quite, touching each other, meant he could feel the exact moment Danny began to panic.
“Breathe,” he murmured, hands coming up to run soothingly down Danny’s arms before he thought better of it, aborting the action. The last thing he wanted was for Danny to feel hemmed in, constricted, trapped. He’d waited this long, and he would wait longer still to ensure that if (when) this did finally happen that Danny was entirely comfortable with it.
“Steve, I… I can’t,” Danny whispered. “I want to, but I can’t.”
“It’s all right, Danno. It’s all right.” Steve meant every word. He moved back a little, giving Danny some room, but Danny swayed forward on his feet, as if his body instinctively wanted to follow Steve’s. That gave Steve more hope.
“Hey, hey,” Steve said, ducking down until Danny made eye contact with him. “Can I hug you? Would that be okay?”
Danny smiled the most heartbreaking smile Steve had ever seen. “Of course you can hug me, ya big goof.”
Steve snorted, but wasted no time in wrapping his arms around Danny’s solid frame.
“Really, it’s okay, Danno. Whatever you want is always okay. Whether that means we move slowly or we don’t move at all. It’s your call.”
“I’m just... God, I want you so much, Steve. But I’m so scared. The last time I felt anything even remotely like this for someone was with Rachel and we all know how that turned out.”
“I know. But I’m not Rachel, Danny. And, yeah, I don’t know what this is gonna be, any more than you do. I can’t see the future, no one can. But if I had to hazard a guess, if I had to put a name to it, I’d call it forever. You’re in my blood now, Jersey. My blood, my head, my heart, and I’m never walking away from you. If we never go beyond what we have now, or if we do, I’m never walking away. No matter what else does or doesn’t happen, I’m always gonna be your friend. Okay? You hear me? You’re never getting rid of me, Williams.”
“Promise?” Danny mumbled, face buried against Steve’s neck, body trembling under Steve’s hands.
“Scout’s honour,” Steve replied.
This time it was Danny’s turn to snort. “I bet you actually were a Scout too, weren’t you? Out doing wilderness training at the age of five, all camouflage gear and your face painted up. John Rambo had nothing on little Stevie McGarrett, right?”
“Well, I was a Sea Cadet, actually, so…”
“Oh, excuuuuse me! So you were probably working out strategies for what to do if you were ever hijacked at sea like some middle school Casey Ryback then, is that it?”
Steve stayed incriminatingly silent.
“Oh my God, I’m right, aren’t I?!” Danny crowed, stepping back because this was apparently too good to miss seeing the look on Steve’s increasingly red face.
“Is he the reason you became a Navy SEAL?? Did you practice saying that “Nah, I’m just a cook” line in the mirror before you leapt around your bedroom taking out the imaginary bad guys and locking lips with Miss July ‘89?? Oh my God, Steve, please tell me I’m right! Oh, I’m really gonna enjoy calling you Steven so much more from now on, Seagal!” Danny was laughing so hard he was practically wheezing by this stage.
Steve’s lips were set in a thin line, determined to let nothing slip out that could provide Danny any more ammunition to ridicule him with. Not that he seemed to need any more.
“Oh, babe,” he said, laughter subsiding into a gentle chuckle. “You’re something else, buddy. I love you.”
Steve’s eyes snapped to meet Danny’s, his mouth falling open at the words ‘I love you‘. It wasn’t like they’d never said them to each other before. They had, several times. But this time felt different. Danny felt it too, Steve could tell from the way he sobered, all amusement falling away, face open and vulnerable. Steve couldn’t stand the fear he saw there. Especially not when there was something he could do to assuage it.
“I love you too, Danny. Always.”
“Yeah, babe?”
“Yeah.”
And just like that the fear was gone. Danny rushed forward to press his lips against Steve’s, warm and sure and so, so sweet. Steve didn’t hesitate to get with the program, arms enveloping Danny and mouth opening under his, granting access for Danny to explore, and exploring in his turn.
“Jesus, Steven,” Danny panted several minutes later when they pulled back just far enough to catch their breath. “Where’d you learn to kiss like that?? Because you are really, really good at it. I mean, like, freakishly good. Phenomenal, even. Out-freakin’-standing.”
Steve grinned, seeing the opportunity and going for it. “Yeah, well… I also cook.”
