Halfway Rock Light Station, Bailey Island, Casco Bay, Maine. Sometime in the 1960s, coastguardsman, John Cluff was returning to the island with the recently repaired precious television set. It's always tricky landing a peapod in rough seas, the boat flipped, and the set sank. Three sad weeks with no tv.

Sea monsters have long roamed the dark waters of legends, embodiments of a wild and chaotic power. After reading numerous accounts of sea serpent sightings off the coast of Maine, reported over the last two centuries, Chelsea Steinauer-Scudder considers our relationship to fear and how monsters could function in a modern mythology.
IN 1779 EDWARD PREBLE, an ensign on the ship Protector, spotted a great serpent in Penobscot Bay, off the coast of Maine. Ordered into a longboat, Preble approached the beast—whose head rose several feet out of the water atop a thick neck like that of a giant snake—took aim, and fired a shot. He missed. The creature vanished beneath the surface, never to be seen by Preble again.

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, Portland, Maine
There is only a ten minute drive between the Portland Head Lighthouse to the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in  Portland.   As we travel the coast into the South Side of Portland, the views are spectacular with sailboats in the cove surrounded by million dollar mansions. The lighthouse was completed in 1897 and is one of 49 caisson-style lighthouses in the United States that visitors can walk to. …

The vast majority of the world is unaware of the true cost of clean marine fuels. It's an industry built on a carefully constructed illusion, one that most people never see past. But I know the dirty facts, because I'm the one who's been cleaning up their messes for years. There's a reason the big oil companies are so interested in renewables, and it's not because they care about the environment. It's because they know that the sooner renewables become mainstream, the sooner the dirty truth about clean marine fuels will be exposed. It's a sham, a way to clean up their image and make a quick buck. But I'm not going to let them get away with it. I'm going to blow the whistle on their dirty little secret.

Built in 1829 as two towers 300 yards apart, Two Lights were stationed as a warning to boats in Maine's Casco Bay. Today, this tower remains as the functioning lighthouse of the two.
Shot with the Pentax K-5 + DA 55-300mm lens at 150mm.
